Then check that the instruction is stored in the right place, that personalization is available and enabled, and that the current chat can access it. Memory is not a guarantee that every rule will be applied; a short, explicit prompt and the right account or project settings are often more reliable.
First, identify where the instruction is being lost
“Forgetting” can mean several different things, and each points to a different fix. Check whether the assistant misses the rule immediately, stops following it later in the same conversation, fails to carry it into a new conversation, or loses it only in one project or workspace.
- One response: Restate the requirement in the prompt and make the expected output explicit. The assistant may have overlooked an ambiguous or competing instruction.
- Later in the same chat: Point out the specific rule it missed and ask for a correction. For a long or complex task, break the request into steps and keep essential constraints visible in the current conversation.
- A new chat: Check whether the preference belongs in an account-wide instruction or personalization setting, and whether that feature is enabled for your account.
- One project or workspace: Check that the rule is in that project’s instructions or knowledge, and confirm the project is allowed to use the context you expect.
Memory and instructions are related but not interchangeable. OpenAI describes custom instructions as direct guidance about what ChatGPT should know and how it should respond; memory can use relevant information that develops across conversations and other available sources. Choose the right place for the instruction
Before changing settings, decide how broadly the rule should apply. Product labels differ, but the useful distinction is scope: all chats, a particular project, or only the current conversation.

For ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory to review the relevant controls. Saved memories and reference to chat history are separate ways ChatGPT can use prior context. In a project, check whether it uses default or project-only memory: project-only memory limits context to that project and prevents project chats from drawing on outside conversations, or outside conversations from drawing on project chats. For Claude, use profile preferences for account-wide guidance, project instructions for rules that apply to chats in a project, and styles for how responses are formatted and delivered. Anthropic says project context is not shared between chats unless it is added to the project knowledge base. Check whether personalization is available and enabled
A missing control or an empty memory list does not necessarily mean the assistant is malfunctioning. Availability may depend on account eligibility, settings, rollout, plan, or organization policy.
ChatGPT
Review Settings > Personalization > Memory. The current Help Center describes a memory summary that can be corrected and source references that may point to past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, files, or connected email. Ask ChatGPT what context it used, and inspect sources where displayed. Treat the summary as a diagnostic aid, not a complete record: OpenAI says it may omit details or sources, and personalization sources may not show every factor shaping a response. Gemini
For past-chat personalization, Google currently lists requirements of age 18 or older, a personal Google Account (not work, school, or supervised), and Keep Activity turned on. Google says past-chat personalization is unavailable in some experiences, including Gems and Live chats. Look under Settings & help > Personal Intelligence, and ask, “Did you use any info from past chats?” to check whether past conversations informed a response. Availability can change, so consult Google’s current Help page for your account and region. Google: Get personalization with past Gemini chats
Microsoft 365 Copilot
Check Settings > Personalization for Enhanced personalization, Custom instructions, Saved memories, and Chat history. Microsoft documents that a user- or organization-level control can stop Copilot from applying custom instructions without deleting them. For a managed account, an administrator may need to check whether enhanced personalization is enabled. Microsoft: Manage Copilot personalization and memory
Inspect what the assistant used, then correct the source
When the service offers a memory summary, source list, or way to ask about past-chat context, use it to identify whether the assistant is drawing on the right information. A source view may be incomplete, so absence from a summary is not proof that a factor played no role.
- If a saved preference is wrong or outdated, correct it in the memory or profile control where it is stored.
- If the rule applies only to a project, update that project’s instructions or knowledge rather than relying on a general memory.
- If the assistant needs facts from a document, make sure the document is available in the current chat or project.
- If the control is missing on a work or school account, ask the organization’s administrator whether policy disables it.
For Gemini, Google says to correct remembered information directly with Gemini while Memory is enabled. For Claude project work, add reusable reference material to project knowledge and save project instructions; Anthropic states, “Claude will use these instructions for all the chats within the project.” Google: Get personalization with past Gemini chats · Anthropic: How can I create and manage projects?

Make the instruction easier to apply and test it
Use one compact instruction with five parts: the task, needed background, constraints, desired output, and how to handle uncertainty. Put stable general preferences in account-wide controls; put project-only rules in project instructions or knowledge.
For this project, use the attached terminology list. Keep answers under 200 words and use a numbered list. If a needed fact is not in the provided material, say what is missing rather than guessing.
Then test the rule in a fresh conversation within the same intended scope. If the assistant misses it, identify the exact requirement and ask for a revision. Anthropic’s official prompt guidance recommends clear, specific requests, sufficient context, substeps for complex tasks, and follow-up feedback. These practices improve clarity, but they cannot enable an unavailable setting or provide context the assistant cannot access. Anthropic: Be clear and direct

Deletion behavior differs by service, so use its specific controls rather than assuming that removing a conversation removes every derived memory.

ChatGPT
Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from it. OpenAI says removal may require deleting both the saved memory and the chat where it was shared, and removing the information from other sources where it appears, such as files or connected apps. Deletions and updates may take time to propagate; OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. OpenAI: Memory in ChatGPT
Gemini
To remove relevant content, Google directs users to delete the chats from Gemini Apps Activity. If connected-app content is involved, Google says to delete the relevant chats and disconnect the app; either action alone can leave another source available. Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft says saved memories remain until users explicitly delete them, and deleting a chat does not delete saved memories generated from it. Chat-history details are dynamic; Microsoft says deleted source chats remove corresponding chat-history details within seven days. Microsoft: Manage Copilot personalization and memory
