To shorten or otherwise change a Google Calendar event while keeping its end time fixed, edit the event’s start time and make sure its original end time is still entered before you save. For example, change an event from 2:00–3:00 to 2:15–3:00; it will then last 45 minutes.
Change the start time and preserve the end time on a computer
- Open Google Calendar on your computer and click the event.
- Click Edit event, if that option appears.
- Set the start time to the time you want.
- Check the end time. Keep the original value, or enter it again if it changed while you were editing.
- Confirm both displayed times are correct, then click Save.
Google’s event data keeps start and end as separate date-time fields, but its API documentation does not specify whether the consumer editor automatically changes the end time when you change the start. Checking both fields is therefore the reliable way to preserve the end time you intend.
Change event duration on Android
In the Google Calendar Android app, Google documents changing an event’s duration by tapping and dragging the circles at the top or bottom of the event. You can also open an existing event, tap Edit, make changes, and save it. The help page does not describe a gesture that locks the end time while you adjust duration. After dragging a handle, check the end time; if needed, edit the event and correct it before saving. Google Calendar’s Android instructions cover these controls.
If you can’t edit the event
Guests cannot change an event’s time or duration unless the organizer has granted them permission to modify it. If you do not have that access, ask the organizer or an editor to make the change. Google Workspace’s meeting guidance explains this restriction.

Take care with recurring events and time zones
For a recurring event, read the scope prompt in Calendar before confirming so the edit applies to the occurrence or occurrences you intend. The general editing instructions do not establish the exact wording or options shown for every recurrence edit, so follow the prompt currently displayed in your calendar.
Calendar displays event times in each invitee’s local time zone and converts event times to UTC. Google also warns that time-zone rule changes can affect how past or future events appear. If the event is near a daylight-saving change or uses separate start and end time zones, verify the date, time zone, and end time after editing. See Google Calendar’s time-zone guidance.
