For a Windows app block, check Windows Security > Protection history and expand the event. For a Microsoft Edge download warning, inspect the warning on the download entry instead. These are different SmartScreen surfaces, and an unknown-reputation warning does not by itself prove a file is malicious.
Check Protection history for a Windows app block
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Protection history.
- Find and expand the event that matches the time and app you tried to open or install. Look for an entry identifying a blocked app or potentially unwanted app (PUA).
- Review the event details. Microsoft says administrator privileges are required to view threat details.
Microsoft says a SmartScreen block of a potentially unwanted app appears as an event in Protection history. Events are retained for two weeks, so an older block may no longer be visible. See Microsoft’s Protection History instructions.
If you select Actions > Allow for an event, Microsoft says you must download the file again before using it. Allowing an item changes how Windows handles it; it is not a safety verdict.
Check an Edge download warning
In Microsoft Edge, inspect the warning shown on the download entry. SmartScreen may warn when a file has an unknown reputation—for example, when it is “not commonly downloaded.” That status is not proof of malware: Microsoft’s FAQ says an Application Reputation warning is not an indication that a download is malicious. It is still a reason to verify the file before opening it. Read Microsoft’s SmartScreen FAQ and overview.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Check that you expected the download and that it came from the intended publisher’s official source.
- Inspect the publisher and signature information available for the file. Be especially cautious with an unsolicited download or an unexpected file without a valid signature.
- If you think Edge has incorrectly flagged a file, open the three-dot menu beside the download alert and choose Report this file as safe. This submits it to Microsoft for review; it does not mean you should ignore other warnings. See Microsoft’s Edge SmartScreen documentation.
Tell SmartScreen apart from other blocks
Windows app-reputation checks and Edge site or download warnings are separate SmartScreen surfaces. A Windows Security event points you to Protection history; an Edge warning appears with the browser download. The exact warning text and where it appears help identify which control stopped the file.
Not every Windows app block is SmartScreen. On Windows 11, Smart App Control is a separate feature that can block apps using cloud-based safety predictions and signature checks. Check the warning’s wording and location before attributing it to SmartScreen. Microsoft describes the distinction in its Smart App Control FAQ.

When an option is unavailable
If a control is locked or an option to ignore a warning is missing, the device may be managed by an organization. Administrators can configure policies that prevent users from bypassing warnings, and Windows Security and Edge settings can be managed separately. On a work or school device, ask the administrator rather than trying to override the setting. Microsoft documents the available SmartScreen settings and SmartScreen configuration.
