To stop future renewal charges on a Microsoft-billed Microsoft 365 plan, sign in to account.microsoft.com/services with the Microsoft account that bought it, open Manage for the plan, and choose Turn off recurring billing or Cancel subscription. Follow the review prompts through to confirmation. Access normally continues until the expiry date shown in your account; turning off renewal does not usually end it immediately.

Before you cancel, check who bills you

The cancellation route depends on where you purchased Microsoft 365. Microsoft’s cancellation guidance directs direct subscribers to their Microsoft account. Purchases through Apple, Google Play, or a retailer such as Amazon must be managed with that provider; Microsoft says it cannot cancel, refund, or change billing for a third-party purchase.

  • On your Microsoft account subscriptions page, check the plan’s Manage control and billing details.
  • If the expected controls are missing, make sure you are signed in with the account used to purchase the plan.
  • Check the original receipt or the seller’s account to identify the billing provider if the route is still unclear.

For purchases through an app store or retailer, use that provider’s account settings or contact its support team to cancel. Microsoft’s subscription management guidance explains this distinction. This article covers consumer subscriptions; business subscriptions use separate cancellation guidance.

Cancel a subscription billed by Microsoft

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that purchased Microsoft 365. Microsoft’s cancellation page may also direct you to account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365.
  2. Find the Microsoft 365 plan and select Manage. Depending on the account page, the control may instead say Upgrade or Cancel.
  3. Choose Turn off recurring billing or Cancel subscription, then review the displayed dates and any refund information.
  4. Follow the remaining prompts and select the option that confirms cancellation or turns off recurring billing. Check the plan page afterward for its status and expiry date.

If the page offers Turn on recurring billing, renewal is already off and the plan is set to expire on the date displayed. You do not need to take another step to prevent a renewal charge. Microsoft explains that turning off recurring billing prevents future billing in its recurring billing instructions.

What happens to access after recurring billing is off?

For a Microsoft-billed subscription, turning off recurring billing normally leaves the plan active until the expiry date shown in the account. The same timing applies to benefits shared through a Microsoft 365 Family subscription: they remain available until that plan expires. Use the account’s displayed date rather than assuming access ends on the day you change the setting.

Check storage and email before expiry

When Microsoft 365 benefits end, applicable accounts revert to Microsoft’s free allowances: 5 GB of cloud storage, including OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments, and 15 GB of Outlook.com storage. These are operational limits described in Microsoft’s subscription expiry guidance, not a dated statistical estimate.

Can you get a refund?

Cancellation does not guarantee a refund. For a Microsoft-billed subscription, the cancellation process shows whether your purchase is eligible; the result depends on factors including product, country, purchase timing, and account history. Microsoft’s refund terms say that, in most cases, a refund may be available within 30 days of the initial purchase or before the first recurring billing date, whichever comes first. The terms also describe a possible refund of the most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after payment; that option is limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. Product and regional rules apply, prepaid retail codes are excluded from that policy, and some regions have prorated-refund rules.

Rely on the eligibility result shown during Microsoft’s cancellation flow rather than assuming a refund will apply. For an Apple, Google Play, or retailer purchase, ask the provider that billed you about its cancellation and refund rules.

If you want Office apps without a subscription

If you want to keep using Office apps but no longer want Microsoft 365 renewal, Microsoft’s guidance on switching to a one-time Office purchase describes turning off recurring billing, waiting for the subscription to expire, and then buying a one-time Office product. This is optional; it is not required to stop recurring charges.
