Use headless Chrome to render the URL, then publish the resulting image and point the shared page’s metadata to it with og:image. The browser capture creates the file; it does not by itself make that file appear in a social preview. For repeatable captures, Puppeteer gives you control over the viewport, navigation, readiness checks, and output. For a one-off check, Chrome’s headless command line can save a screenshot.
Choose what the image should show
Before capturing, decide whether you want a screenshot of the visible browser viewport, a full-page image, or a specific card element. A URL screenshot is a literal rendering of a page, so it may include navigation, cookie notices, dynamic content, or other elements that do not belong in designed social artwork. If you control the page and want a consistent branded card, a dedicated fixed-size card element is often easier to manage than capturing the whole page.
- Viewport: captures the visible area at the chosen viewport size.
- Full page: captures content beyond the viewport; useful for page documentation, but often too tall for a social card.
- Element: captures a selected component, such as a purpose-built social-card container.
Puppeteer documents both page screenshots and element screenshots in its screenshot guide. The examples below use a viewport capture.
Capture the URL with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project, save this as an ES module such as capture-card.mjs, and replace the target URL with the page you want to render. The example sets a 1200 × 630 viewport, waits for navigation to reach networkidle2, and writes a PNG.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({width: 1200, height: 630, deviceScaleFactor: 1});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
await page.screenshot({path: 'social-card.png'});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it with node capture-card.mjs. Puppeteer’s screenshot documentation currently identifies version 25.12.0; check and pin the version your project uses because APIs can change. See the Page.screenshot() API reference for options and returned image data.
Make readiness site-specific
networkidle2 is a useful starting point, not proof that every page is visually complete. A page can load fonts, lazy images, animations, or app-rendered content after network activity settles, while persistent requests may prevent an idle condition from arriving. For a production job, wait for a selector or other condition that represents the content you need, check that the expected text or image exists, and verify the final URL after navigation. If the target is a dedicated card component, capture that element rather than an unrelated part of the page.
Capture one element instead
When the page includes a card element with a stable selector, wait for it and take an element screenshot:

const card = await page.waitForSelector('[data-social-card]', {visible: true});
if (!card) throw new Error('Social card element was not found');
await card.screenshot({path: 'social-card.png'});
Use a selector that is specific to your page. The element must exist and be in a capturable state; a missing selector or an element that never becomes visible should be treated as a capture failure, not as a valid image.
Use Chrome’s command line for a one-off capture
For a manual smoke check, Chrome’s headless CLI can capture a URL without a Puppeteer script:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1200,630 https://example.com
Chrome documents the default output filename as screenshot.png in the current working directory. The CLI is convenient for a quick check, while a script is more suitable when you need custom readiness logic, repeatable filenames, error handling, or batches. The Chrome Headless command-line reference also describes --dump-dom for inspecting the serialized DOM after Chrome parses the page and runs scripts; it does not create the social-card image.

Publish the image and add social metadata
Save the generated image somewhere the relevant preview crawlers can reach, then add an absolute image URL to the page being shared. The Open Graph Protocol defines og:image and optional image properties such as dimensions and alternative text. For example:
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/social-card.png">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A concise description of the card image">
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
The Open Graph fields are described in the Open Graph Protocol. A third-party guide updated for 2024 recommends 1200 × 630 pixels as a practical starting point for an X summary_large_image card and describes X-specific tags with Open Graph fallback. Treat that size as guidance, not a universal guarantee: card display and platform requirements can change. Check the destination platform’s current documentation or preview tools and inspect an actual shared URL. The third-party guide is at og-image.org’s Twitter/X card guide.

- Inspect the file. Open the image and confirm it shows the intended content, crop, and dimensions.
- Check the shared page’s metadata. Confirm the page returns the intended absolute
og:imageURL and any relevant card tags. - Check image reachability. Fetch the image URL without an authenticated browser session; crawlers need to be able to retrieve it.
- Preview on the target platform. Confirm the real shared URL produces the expected card. Platforms may crop, render, or cache previews differently.
Troubleshoot common capture and preview failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The image is blank or missing page content | The screenshot ran before app content or assets were ready, or the navigation landed somewhere unexpected. | Check the final URL and expected content. Wait for a page-specific selector or readiness condition instead of relying only on a generic idle signal. |
| Fonts or lazy images are absent | Those assets were not ready when the capture occurred. | Wait for the relevant font or image readiness in your page-specific workflow; verify the resulting file rather than assuming navigation completion means every visual asset loaded. |
| The capture has the wrong crop or size | The viewport dimensions or device scale factor do not match the intended output, or the page screenshot includes too much content. | Set an explicit viewport. For designed artwork, consider a dedicated card element and capture that element. |
| The script hangs or times out | A page may keep network activity open, so a network-idle condition may not suit it. | Use a condition tied to the content you need, such as a selector, and add your own timeout and failure handling appropriate to the job. |
| The image exists, but no preview appears | Creating a local image file does not publish it or connect it to the page’s metadata. | Publish the image at a publicly reachable URL, set og:image on the shared page, and inspect the platform preview. |
| The preview is stale or differs from the file | The platform may have cached or transformed a prior preview. | Check the live metadata and image URL, then use the platform’s available preview or refresh mechanism. Do not assume all networks handle caching or cropping identically. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does taking a screenshot automatically create a social preview?
No. The image must be published at a crawler-accessible URL, and the shared page must reference it in metadata such as Open Graph’s og:image.
