That gives Microsoft a credible challenger in the handheld gaming PC category. It does not show that SteamOS is replacing Windows across PC gaming—or threatening Microsoft’s broader business.
Why SteamOS is becoming a Windows alternative for handhelds
SteamOS is Valve’s Linux-based operating system, designed around playing games through Steam. Its expansion onto hardware from another manufacturer matters because it makes SteamOS more than a Valve-device-only proposition. Valve lists the Lenovo Legion Go S as officially “Powered by SteamOS”; its May 2025 update archive records the addition of official support for that device. Valve’s installation and repair information also names Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame.
That is evidence of a growing, but still bounded, footprint—not proof that SteamOS runs on every PC or that other manufacturers are adopting it at scale. Valve says SteamOS can be installed on additional AMD-powered PCs, but cautions that its ability to troubleshoot hardware outside the officially supported list may be limited. If considering a Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS handheld gaming PC, check current availability and configuration in your region; the support listing alone does not establish local stock or price.
Why a gaming-focused system appeals
A handheld PC has different priorities from a desktop: navigating with a controller, launching games without relying on a mouse and keyboard, and moving between play sessions are central parts of the experience. SteamOS is positioned as a gaming-oriented system, so it gives Microsoft a direct point of comparison on devices held and operated more like consoles than conventional PCs. The available evidence does not include controlled user-experience tests showing that SteamOS is easier to use, or that it delivers better performance or battery life than Windows on the same hardware.

Does SteamOS run Windows games?
Often, yes. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer lets many Windows game executables and their data run on SteamOS, which is based on Linux. Players can therefore access many games built for Windows without the game itself being a native Linux release. But compatibility varies: a game listed in Steam’s catalog is not automatically guaranteed to launch or work well on every SteamOS device.
Valve calls Proton “a work in progress.” Its Steamworks compatibility documentation says blocking compatibility bugs or performance problems can result in an Unsupported rating. Compatibility can also depend on more than the game executable: anti-cheat software and launchers may prevent a title from working as expected.

Anti-cheat remains a real obstacle
The European Commission’s 2023 Microsoft/Activision decision described technical limitations in compatibility layers and noted that anti-cheat implementations are a primary reason some games are unplayable. That is the Commission’s assessment in a merger decision, not a claim that every failure is caused by Proton. For a player, the practical check is whether the specific games they care about—including multiplayer titles—are supported on the intended device.
SteamOS versus Windows: what the evidence shows
Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey is a monthly snapshot of participating Steam customers, not a census of all PC users, gaming PCs, installed devices, or game revenue. Valve says participation is optional and anonymous. In its July 2026 survey, the operating-system readings were:

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
| Operating-system category | July 2026 reading | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | 93.67% | Share of responding Steam customers attributed to Windows |
| Linux | 4.01% | Share attributed to Linux; the survey presents SteamOS Holo within Linux |
| SteamOS Holo | 0.89% | A SteamOS category shown within Linux, not an additional share to add to Linux |
These figures show SteamOS is visible in Valve’s survey, while Windows remains dominant among respondents. They do not establish worldwide operating-system market share or how many handhelds have been sold. Valve’s survey page explains the monthly survey and publishes its snapshots.
A separate, older figure illustrates the scale of Windows’ gaming presence on Steam. In its 2023 Microsoft/Activision decision, the European Commission cited Steam data indicating that 97.75% of games played on Steam in March 2023 were played on Windows. This is a historical, Steam-specific observation from March 2023—not a current statistic, a measure of all PC games, or a general Windows market-share figure. Read in context, it underscores how much compatibility ground an alternative operating system must cover.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Can SteamOS replace Windows for PC gaming?
For some people, particularly handheld players whose libraries and preferred games work well through Proton, SteamOS can be a practical alternative. It is not yet a universal replacement. Compatibility limitations, anti-cheat support, and Valve’s bounded list of officially supported hardware all matter, especially for anyone who depends on particular multiplayer games or uses a PC outside a primarily Steam-based gaming role.
The evidence supports a focused conclusion: SteamOS is a credible competitive pressure point for Microsoft in handheld gaming PCs because Valve has extended official support beyond its own handheld and made many Windows games playable through Proton. It does not establish that SteamOS has displaced Windows across PC gaming, or that it has had a meaningful impact on Microsoft’s overall business. Microsoft should take the challenge seriously in this category; “terrified” overstates what the available evidence shows.
