What Word can do today
Predictive text and one-click suggestions
Microsoft documents predictive suggestions and “one-click writing suggestions” in Word for Microsoft 365 and desktop Word for Windows. Word predicts text as you write, and you can accept a suggestion with the Tab key. These inline suggestions are different from Copilot’s review of a passage or document. Microsoft’s Word documentation describes the feature.
Copilot writing suggestions
Copilot can review either selected text or a whole document and suggest changes beyond spelling and grammar, including improvements to clarity, organization, ideas, and tone. The suggestions do not automatically replace your writing: you decide which ones to apply. Microsoft’s writing-suggestions guide describes this review workflow.
- Select a passage to review, or leave text unselected to have Copilot review the document.
- Open Draft with Copilot and choose Writing suggestions.
- Review the proposed changes and apply the ones you want.
- Keep, replace, regenerate, or discard the result as appropriate.
Microsoft describes the intent this way: “This feature gives you the power to decide what updates to make—combining your expertise with the suggestions from Copilot to create a strong and useful document that’s written in your own voice.”

What “recent suggestions” may mean—and what is confirmed
The title describes a reported upcoming behavior in which Word’s AI would use recent suggestions or prompts to assist writing. The available official material does not establish the precise behavior, a general-availability date, or whether the feature will reuse prior prompts, Copilot edits, or another kind of suggestion. Treat that specific capability as reported or planned, not as an available Word feature with a confirmed launch date.
Microsoft’s Insider Blog post, “New Copilot entry points, smart suggestions, and keyboard-first design,” published May 11, 2026 and updated May 13, 2026, describes Copilot evolving across Word and other Microsoft 365 apps. It supports a broader smart-suggestions direction, but does not confirm the exact recent-suggestions behavior or when it will reach general availability.

How Copilot drafting differs from inline suggestions
Copilot’s drafting tools work from instructions and context rather than simply predicting the next words. Microsoft says Copilot in Word can draft from a prompt, outline, notes, or reference files; follow an existing format; add sections, paragraphs, checklists, or tables; edit in place; rewrite selected text; and transform text into tables or images. It can also generate citations. When permissions allow, Copilot may use relevant Microsoft 365 work content such as files, emails, and meetings. See Microsoft’s drafting guide.
Those capabilities do not prove that Word will remember or reuse a particular recent suggestion. They do show why it matters to distinguish inline prediction, document-level review, and prompt-driven drafting: each has a different scope and user workflow.

Access depends on your license, organization, and platform
Copilot in Word requires an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and/or Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Microsoft says some create and edit experiences roll out gradually and may depend on your license, organization settings, app version, and whether you use Word for Windows, Mac, the web, or iPad. The available documentation does not promise identical timing or behavior across those platforms. Check your organization’s license and settings, and keep Word updated; seeing a feature on one platform does not establish that it has rolled out to all users.
Keep control of AI-assisted edits
Copilot suggestions are proposals for you to assess, not a substitute for reviewing the finished document. Microsoft advises checking generated drafts and edits, especially facts, numbers, citations, names, policy statements, and other sensitive information. For a document where accuracy or voice matters, compare each change with the source material and keep only what you can verify.
