Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft has made visible progress on Windows 11, but the six-month record is mixed—not proof of a system-wide speedup. In its October 1, 2026 assessment, PCWorld gave Search and a quieter Windows its strongest grades (A−), Start and the taskbar a C, and performance a B. The performance grade is an editorial judgment, not a benchmark: the reviewer said he could not tell whether Windows felt faster without a same-hardware comparison.
What Microsoft promised to improve
In March 2026, Microsoft said it would focus on Windows performance, reliability, and well-crafted experiences. Its July 31 progress update described work on taskbar customization, more intentional AI integration, less disruptive updates, a faster and more dependable File Explorer, more control over widgets and feeds, and a simpler Windows Insider Program and Feedback Hub. Microsoft said many improvements had been rolling out to Insiders, with broader rollout beginning in fall. These were company-reported commitments and status updates, not independent measurements of the results. Microsoft’s July progress update
The same update named work already underway: a calmer Search home and clearer results; taskbar-position and Start-personalization previews; quieter widget defaults; File Explorer architecture and usability changes; improved USB4 dock, Bluetooth, and printer discovery connectivity; memory-efficiency work; more reliable Windows Hello sign-in; and update controls including longer pauses and skipping updates during initial setup.
How the six-month report card grades Windows 11
PCWorld’s Mark Hachman published an independent editorial assessment on October 1, 2026. The grades below are his judgments, not standardized scores or lab measurements. Read PCWorld’s report card

| Area | Grade | What the reviewer said |
|---|---|---|
| Search | A− | Results more clearly distinguish apps, settings, and documents. File Explorer search felt fast on the reviewer’s SSD-equipped PC. |
| Copilot and AI integration | B | The reviewer observed fewer Copilot icons in Notepad, Photos, and Snipping Tool, while Copilot remains in dedicated and Microsoft 365 experiences. |
| Windows Update and out-of-box experience | B | More control over update timing was welcome, but the reviewer retained reservations about delivery optimization and the complexity of Insider preview choices. |
| Windows performance | B | The grade is an impression, not evidence of a measured system-wide speed improvement. |
| Windows quietness | A− | The reviewer’s assessment was that Windows had become less intrusive. |
| Start and taskbar | C | Microsoft’s customization changes earned credit, but did not resolve the reviewer’s dissatisfaction with Start. |
Is Windows 11 actually faster?
The cited report does not establish that Windows 11 is measurably faster across systems. Hachman wrote, “I simply couldn’t say for certain whether Windows feels faster without doing a head-to-head comparison with the same hardware.” His B performance grade should therefore be read as a reviewer’s assessment, not a benchmark result or a quantified improvement.
His comments about 8GB laptops are also based on experience with the devices he tried, not a controlled before-and-after test. Basic browsing and Office work were manageable, while ten Edge tabs plus background apps could consume available memory. That observation does not show that users need to buy more memory or replace a PC.

What has shipped, and why availability differs
Microsoft describes the Windows 11 2026 Update as bringing together features and improvements delivered through monthly updates over the prior year. It highlights Search controls, Start and taskbar personalization, and File Explorer improvements, while warning that availability varies by device and market and that features may continue rolling out. To check for updates, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Seeing no update or feature yet does not necessarily mean it is unavailable to every eligible device. Microsoft Learn says Windows 11 version 26H2 shares a servicing foundation with 24H2 and 25H2; eligible devices can move to it using an enablement package. Many improvements arrive through monthly servicing updates rather than in one large release-day package. Microsoft’s broader explanation of continuous innovation also describes annual feature updates, periodic servicing updates, Store updates, and phased feature rollouts. What Microsoft says is still in progress
In July, Microsoft named four additional focus areas through the end of 2026: faster onboarding and setup, memory optimization for PCs with 8GB and above, simpler family setup and parental controls, and more natural voice interaction. These are ongoing priorities, not confirmed completed deliveries. Microsoft executive Pavan Davuluri acknowledged the rollout work still ahead: “We know there is more to do, especially in getting these improvements to all customers. We’re not slowing down.” Microsoft’s July progress update

- Performance: treat the B as an editorial grade; the report does not provide a same-hardware benchmark establishing a speed gain.
- Reliability and updates: Microsoft reports changes to sign-in, connectivity, and update controls, while the independent review still flags update-delivery concerns.
- Usability and control: Search received the strongest assessment, while Start and taskbar customization did not satisfy the reviewer.
- AI: fewer embedded Copilot icons were noted in some apps, but Copilot remains in other Windows and Microsoft 365 experiences.
The evidence supports a verdict of concrete work and uneven results—not a clean turnaround. It also does not establish that readers need a new PC, extra memory, a Windows license, or a maintenance utility to benefit.
