At the time, Microsoft said Search in Bing would remain under Search & intelligence, while the Copilot control would move to a PowerShell-managed path. Current Microsoft Learn guidance now lists a Copilot in Bing, Edge, and Windows setting in the Microsoft 365 admin center, so administrators should use today’s tenant-specific documentation rather than assume the 2024 workflow still applies.
What changed in Microsoft’s February 2024 notice?
Microsoft published Message Center notice MC716390 on February 16, 2024. It announced a standard rollout expected to begin in mid-February and finish by late February 2024. This was a historical rollout window, not a current schedule.
The change separated two functions that had shared a Microsoft 365 admin center control: organizational Microsoft Search in Bing and the Copilot for Microsoft 365 experience in Bing, Edge, and Windows. Under the design described in the notice, the settings would have different management paths.

What happened to the existing setting?
MC716390 said an organization’s selection on the shared control would be inherited after the release. The notice specifically said customers with Microsoft 365 Copilot would inherit their selection. It also said that if an organization purchased Microsoft 365 Copilot later, Copilot for Microsoft 365 in Bing, Edge, and Windows would be enabled and could be managed through the script.
The notice said administrators did not need to prepare for the change. It suggested they might choose to notify users or update internal documentation.

Where is the Copilot setting in the admin center now?
Current Microsoft Learn guidance lists this route for the Copilot in Bing, Edge, and Windows scenario: Microsoft 365 admin center > Copilot > Settings > User access > Copilot in Bing, Edge, and Windows. Learn describes it as AI-powered Copilot Chat automatically available to Bing, Edge, and Windows users.
This current guidance differs from the PowerShell management path in the 2024 notice. The current page does not establish whether the exact legacy script workflow remains applicable to any tenant. Check the live Microsoft Learn instructions and what your own tenant displays before changing a setting; do not rely on an old script or assume that every tenant will show the same controls.

Microsoft says the admin center only shows services licensed in the tenant and that the admin center changes frequently. The setting’s visibility can therefore depend on licensing and the current tenant experience. See Microsoft’s current Copilot settings guidance.
Did Microsoft Search in Bing change too?
Not according to MC716390: the notice said the Microsoft Search in Bing control would stay on the Search & intelligence page. The setting that moved in the announced change was the Copilot control. This distinction matters because organizational search and Copilot Chat are separate experiences, even when users encounter them in Bing.

How do web-search and Edge policies fit in?
Microsoft documents additional Copilot Chat controls that can affect web search or the Edge experience. The Allow web search in Copilot policy manages web search. Edge policies include EdgeEntraCopilotPageContext, which governs use of browsing context, and HubsSidebarEnabled, which can disable Copilot Chat in the Edge sidebar.
These policies are related, but they are not the same as the specific tenant-level Copilot setting and PowerShell path described in MC716390. Use Microsoft’s Copilot Chat management guidance for the policy scope and current instructions.

What administrators should do
- For current Copilot availability, check Microsoft 365 admin center > Copilot > Settings > User access > Copilot in Bing, Edge, and Windows, if the option is visible in your tenant.
- For organizational Microsoft Search in Bing, use the Search & intelligence area described in MC716390.
- Before changing settings, confirm tenant licensing and follow the live Microsoft documentation for the control you intend to manage.
- If you are reviewing older internal instructions, distinguish the 2024 PowerShell workflow from current Copilot settings and policy guidance.
