You can cancel Microsoft 365 through your Microsoft account, but the official evidence does not support a universal $30 “Office for life” offer. Microsoft lists Office Home 2024 as a one-time purchase for $149.99 in the United States in 2026; it covers one PC or Mac and does not include future major-version upgrades. Before cancelling, check what happens to your desktop apps and OneDrive storage.
How to cancel Microsoft 365
- Go to Microsoft’s Subscriptions page and sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase the subscription.
- Find Microsoft 365 and select Manage, then choose Cancel.
- Follow the prompts to complete cancellation. If you see Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage, Microsoft says recurring billing is already off; the subscription will expire on the date shown.
Turning off recurring billing prevents the next scheduled charge. If Microsoft charged you recently, review its refund policy: eligibility depends on your country, subscription type and timing. Microsoft describes a one-time refund right for the most recent recurring charge when cancellation is requested within 30 days after payment, subject to policy limits.
What happens to your files and apps after cancellation?
When the subscription expires, desktop Office apps can eventually switch to View Only mode. You can open and print documents, but you cannot edit or create new ones. You also lose extra OneDrive storage and other subscription services.
Cancellation does not itself mean your documents disappear. However, if your OneDrive files exceed the storage available to your account after the subscription ends, make a plan to reduce or move files and check Microsoft’s account and storage guidance. Free browser versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote remain available with a Microsoft account.

Can you get Microsoft Office without a subscription?
Yes. Microsoft Office Home 2024 is its one-time-purchase option for people who want desktop Office without a recurring Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft’s US listing showed $149.99 in 2026 for one PC or Mac, with classic 2024 Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. The price is not universal: currency, region, edition and promotions can affect what you pay. The Home edition is for non-commercial use.
Office 2024 is a fixed release: Microsoft says a one-time purchase does not include new feature upgrades or an upgrade option to later major releases. Microsoft 365, by contrast, provides continuously updated apps, security fixes, cloud storage and other subscription services. Before buying a one-time license, verify the exact edition, device limit, commercial-use rights, seller, activation method, region and refund terms. If you need desktop apps on more devices, ongoing feature updates or subscription storage, compare those needs with the Microsoft 365 plan rather than price alone.

Microsoft advises buying from Microsoft or a credible source and downloading software only from official Microsoft partner websites or the Microsoft Store. See Microsoft’s guidance on genuine software and genuine-license guidance. Be cautious if a seller cannot explain the license type, provide clear purchase and refund terms, or identify the edition and activation method.
