Microsoft announced three AI audio models on October 1, 2026: MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming for speech-to-text, plus MAI-Voice-2.1 and MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash for text-to-speech. The transcription model can return partial text while someone is still speaking; the two voice models generate multilingual speech, with Flash positioned for latency-sensitive, high-volume applications. Microsoft’s performance comparisons are vendor-reported, not independent guarantees.
What Microsoft released
The October 1 announcement covers one transcription model and two speech-generation models. Microsoft lists Microsoft Foundry and MAI Playground as access routes for all three. It also lists Vercel and Azure Voice Live; the two voice models are additionally available through OpenRouter. LiveKit is labeled “coming soon,” so it should not be treated as an available route yet. Availability may vary by platform and region.

How MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming works
Unlike a workflow that waits for a speaker to finish before producing text, the streaming model returns provisional transcript fragments, called partials, and can revise them into more stable text as more audio arrives. Microsoft says the first hypotheses appear just over 100 ms after audio is received. That is Microsoft’s launch-announcement figure, not a promise that every application will show text at that interval; end-to-end experience also depends on audio delivery and the surrounding system.
Microsoft Learn describes MAI-Transcribe-2 as supporting 60 languages, automatic language detection, speaker diarization, word-level timestamps, and keyword biasing for domain-specific vocabulary. These capabilities may suit live dictation, subtitling, or applications that need to associate words with speakers or timing. The launch material does not establish performance for every accent, noise level, language pair, or specialized vocabulary.

What the voice models do
MAI-Voice-2.1
Microsoft says MAI-Voice-2.1 supports 23 languages and 26 locales. One voice can speak across supported languages while retaining a consistent voice identity and using native accents. This is aimed at products that need a recognizable voice across multilingual content rather than a different-sounding speaker for each language.
MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash
Flash targets workloads where latency and volume matter. Microsoft says it can generate 45 seconds of audio with 150 ms end-to-end latency, and reports 55% faster model inference and approximately 60% lower pricing than comparable models. These are Microsoft’s comparisons; the announcement does not provide an independently verified, workload-matched comparison in the sources cited here.

Microsoft says both voice models can clone a voice across supported languages from a few seconds of reference audio and include consent guardrails. The announcement does not provide a detailed evaluation of how effective those safeguards are. Voice cloning should be used only with appropriate permission and in compliance with applicable law and platform requirements.

The announcement’s dollar figures do not specify geography, tax treatment, or whether additional charges apply. Check the current Microsoft pricing and regional availability before estimating a deployment. The transcription rate is explicitly introductory through the end of 2026, not a permanent price.

How strong are the accuracy and speed claims?
Microsoft says MAI-Transcribe-2 ranked No. 1 for final and partial transcript accuracy on Artificial Analysis. It also says internal evaluations found transcript words appeared twice as fast as with its “closest competitor” for real-time dictation or subtitling. Those statements should be read as Microsoft-reported results: the benchmark methodology and competitor comparison were not independently reviewed in the cited sources. They do not show which model will perform best on a particular recording or application.
For a real deployment, test the languages, accents, acoustic conditions, domain vocabulary, and latency your users will encounter. For transcription, compare partial-result timing as well as final accuracy, diarization, timestamps, and keyword handling. For speech generation, evaluate language and locale fit, voice consistency, response latency, throughput, and total cost at your expected character volume.

Where the models may fit
Microsoft proposes customer-service voice agents that can act before a caller finishes speaking, multilingual assistants that detect a spoken language and reply in the same voice, and interactive learning or media for tutoring, role-play, simulations, narration, and conversational content. These are suggested applications, not independently tested case studies. The right model depends on whether an application needs recognition or generation, and on the quality and cost requirements of its complete audio pipeline.

- Choose a streaming transcription model when an application needs text during speech rather than only after an utterance ends.
- Consider MAI-Voice-2.1 when maintaining a consistent voice across supported languages and locales is important.
- Consider Flash when high-volume generation and low latency are priorities, then validate Microsoft’s comparative claims against the target workload.
