Microsoft confirmed that attackers gained unauthorized access to its X account, posted a false promise to bring Clippy back after 500,000 likes, and promoted a cryptocurrency token. Microsoft said it secured the account, removed the unauthorized posts, and was investigating. It also said it neither endorsed nor had any affiliation with the token.
What happened to Microsoft’s X account?
On October 2, 2026, BleepingComputer reported that unknown attackers had accessed Microsoft’s official X account, which had more than 13 million followers at the time. The account reposted a Clippy-themed post asking how many likes it would take to bring back the Office assistant, then replied: “500,000 likes and we bring Clippy back. The ball is in your court.” That message came from a compromised account; it was not a genuine Microsoft product announcement. BleepingComputer and Windows Latest reported the post on October 2.
A Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge, in a statement quoted by BleepingComputer: “We have confirmed unauthorized access to our account on X including posts that did not come from Microsoft.” The spokesperson said the account had been secured, the unauthorized posts removed, and the circumstances were under investigation. BleepingComputer’s October 2 report and Windows Central’s October 2 report quoted Microsoft’s statement.
Did Microsoft endorse the Clippy cryptocurrency?
No. A separate account, @ClippyMSFT, reposted the compromised Microsoft message and promoted a token called $Clippy. BleepingComputer reported that the promoter claimed the token had a liquidity pool paired directly with $MSFT. That was the promoter’s claim, not evidence that Microsoft stock backed the token or that Microsoft was involved.

Microsoft expressly denied authorizing, sponsoring, or endorsing a Clippy-, Microsoft-, or $MSFT-associated token. It said: “Microsoft does not endorse or have any affiliation with this token, its creators, or any related cryptocurrency project.” Microsoft also said it would pursue appropriate legal action to have the unauthorized token and related materials removed. BleepingComputer reported the disclaimer.
How was Microsoft’s X account hacked?
The method has not been established in the October 2 reporting. Microsoft said it was continuing to investigate, but the reports did not identify whether the incident involved phishing, stolen sessions, a compromised device, or another route. The identities of the attackers, token-contract ownership, any money raised or lost, and the outcome of legal action were likewise not established. Do not treat any proposed cause or token connection as confirmed without a later attributable statement.

What should users make of the incident?
- Do not treat the Clippy promise as news from Microsoft. It was posted from an account Microsoft confirmed had unauthorized access.
- Do not infer Microsoft backing from the token promoter’s $MSFT claim. Microsoft explicitly disavowed the token and any affiliation with its creators or related projects.
- Check dates on updates. The account status, posts, token promotion, and investigation may change. The reported follower count and account details above reflect coverage dated October 2, 2026, not a live status check.
Microsoft’s general guidance for recovering a hacked Microsoft account advises scanning a PC for malware before changing a password, changing or resetting the password, and reviewing account settings. That guidance concerns Microsoft accounts, not recovery of Microsoft’s X account, and it does not establish that malware caused this incident.
