In April 2011, Microsoft described custom servers and rack-level power systems built with OEMs for its growing cloud operations. The design emphasized fitting more servers into each rack, reducing power-conversion losses, and tailoring hardware to workloads such as Bing, Hotmail, and Windows Azure. Its published figures describe that historical design, not Microsoft’s current Azure hardware.

What Microsoft disclosed

Data Center Knowledge reported on April 25, 2011, that Microsoft’s server team developed specifications with server vendors rather than relying solely on standard off-the-shelf configurations. Application teams and vendors could customize implementations for different services, including Bing, Hotmail, and Windows Azure. Microsoft also used bulk deployments for scale-out services and maintained a separate internal catalog for smaller business groups. Data Center Knowledge’s 2011 report describes the disclosure.

How the server layout worked

The report described a half-width arrangement in which two servers fit into one 1U rack slot. Each server board had two CPU sockets, and each socket had four DIMM memory slots. This compact layout was part of a broader effort to make server hardware and rack infrastructure suit Microsoft’s large-scale services.

According to the report, Microsoft’s design could accommodate up to 96 servers in a 57U rack and support power density of up to 16 kilowatts per rack. It also cited 40 to 60 watts per server depending on whether a design used four or six cores. Microsoft aimed to bring idle server power down to about 30 percent of active power, compared with a prior figure of 50 percent. These are figures attributed to the Microsoft design by Data Center Knowledge in 2011, not independent benchmark results or specifications for current equipment.

How the rack handled power and backup

The reported power path brought 480V three-phase AC to the rack, where it was converted to 12V DC for the servers. The approach was intended to reduce losses associated with making multiple AC-to-DC conversions in centralized UPS systems. Each rack had at least two sets of battery packs for short-term backup, supporting Microsoft’s aim to operate without a central UPS system.

For the IT-PAC configuration covered in the report, server fans were removed and airflow was managed through air pressure in the module. That detail applies to the described configuration; it should not be read as a feature of every Microsoft server.

Why Microsoft customized the hardware

Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Dileep Bhandarkar, whom the report identified as overseeing server hardware architecture, explained the motivation: “When Microsoft saw its server counts and data center footprint growing, it became clear that we needed to improve efficiency.” The company could shape specifications around the scale-out services it operated, rather than treating each server as a standalone purchase.

The report also quoted Bhandarkar on removing hardware that was unnecessary for the intended use: “When I came to Microsoft, every server had a DVD drive.” The comment illustrates the effort to omit components where they were not needed; it does not establish that every Microsoft server lacked an optical drive.

How the 2011 design fits Microsoft’s later infrastructure

Later Microsoft materials describe rack-scale and modular approaches, but do not establish that the exact 2011 design remains deployed. Microsoft Research’s discussion of rack-scale computing treats the rack as a computing building block and describes co-design across hardware, operating systems, storage, networking, and applications. Microsoft’s server architecture paper discusses modular blades and chassis with shared power and cooling.

Microsoft Datacenters says Project Olympus, an open-source modular server architecture, has served as a standardized hardware design for Microsoft data centers since 2016. For present-day high-level context, Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure overview describes design across silicon, memory, storage, servers, networking, security, power, cooling, and data-center operations. None of these later sources verifies that the 2011 rack’s figures or individual features remain current.

What the published figures do—and do not—show

The 2011 report gives design details and stated targets, but it is not a controlled comparison with conventional data-center systems. It does not provide an independently measured efficiency result, a cost analysis, or a complete performance benchmark. The figures are useful for understanding what Microsoft described at the time, but they do not support calculating a specific energy or cost saving against other systems.
