Yes, the Copilot app can appear in the Windows 11 Start menu, but the eye-catching suggested-prompt panel that inspired the August 2025 headline was an Insider-build experiment—not a confirmed feature coming to every PC. Microsoft documents the app’s availability and ways to install, remove, or manage it. That is separate from the experimental Start-menu recommendations and from the Microsoft 365 Copilot app deployment for some work devices.

What did Microsoft test in the Start menu?

On August 19, 2025, BetaNews reported screenshots shared by Windows Insider observer PhantomOfEarth. They showed a Start-menu recommendation for Copilot or Microsoft 365 Copilot, with suggested prompts such as researching a topic or drafting a document.

That report described an experiment visible in Insider builds. Microsoft had not announced a general release, and appearance in a test build did not establish that the prompt module would reach all Windows 11 users. It is also not the same thing as simply having the Copilot app listed or pinned in Start.

Which Copilot app might appear in Start?

“Copilot” can refer to different apps and deployment routes. The distinction matters because consumer installation and organizational Microsoft 365 deployment have different controls.

What it is Who it is for How it gets onto the PC What to know about Start
Copilot app People using Copilot with a personal account Microsoft says it should already be installed on new Windows 11 PCs; it can also be obtained free from Microsoft Store. It may be pinned to the taskbar or listed on Start. That does not mean the experimental suggested-prompt module is present.
Microsoft 365 Copilot app Work or school users, depending on the organization’s Microsoft 365 setup Microsoft deployment documentation describes automatic installation for eligible commercial Microsoft 365 desktop-app installations, with administrator opt-out controls. The app provides a Start-menu entry point. Microsoft’s documentation says automatic commercial deployment does not apply in the EEA.

These descriptions reflect different distribution routes: Microsoft Store availability for the consumer Copilot app, and organization-managed Microsoft 365 deployment for the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. A Start entry alone does not tell you which route installed an app; check the app name and, on a work device, ask your IT administrator if needed.

How do you remove Copilot from the Start menu?

If the app is installed and you want it gone, Microsoft Support documents uninstalling the Copilot app through Windows Settings. Removing the app is different from merely unpinning it, which hides the shortcut without uninstalling the software.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find Copilot, open its options, and select Uninstall.

If you only want to remove a pinned shortcut, right-click the Copilot entry in Start and choose Unpin from Start, if that option is shown. The app can remain installed and may still be found in the app list or launched another way.

Can a company block or remove Copilot?

Yes. Microsoft Learn documents enterprise controls for the consumer Copilot package, including using AppLocker to prevent the package from being installed or launched. Microsoft also documents PowerShell removal instructions for administrators. These are managed-device controls; employees should not try to bypass organizational policy or remove managed software themselves.

For the Microsoft 365 Copilot app deployment, Microsoft’s deployment FAQ says eligible commercial organizations can opt out of automatic installation. This control concerns that deployment route and is distinct from blocking the consumer Copilot package. The organization’s administrator determines which policies apply to its devices.

Did Microsoft cancel automatic Microsoft 365 Copilot installation?

Not as a definitive, permanent cancellation based on the available dated reports. Windows Central reported on March 18, 2026 that Microsoft had temporarily disabled automatic installation of the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices that have Microsoft 365 desktop apps; installations already present were unaffected. Microsoft’s deployment FAQ still describes automatic installation for eligible commercial deployments and administrator opt-out, with an EEA exception.

The practical answer is that the rollout was reported paused, while Microsoft’s deployment documentation still describes the eligibility and controls. The pause and the documented deployment rules are not the same statement: deployment policy can change, and the March report is a dated status rather than a guarantee about every device or a permanent cancellation.

Do you need a Copilot keyboard to use it?

No. A dedicated Copilot key is optional. Microsoft lists the Copilot keyboard key and Win+C as launch methods, and supported pen shortcut buttons can also be configured to open the Copilot app. A keyboard shortcut or device key launches the app; it does not establish that the experimental Start-menu prompt recommendations are available.
