Microsoft’s September 14, 2026 out-of-band update KB5129194 (OS Build 28000.2956) fixes a Windows 11 version 26H1 Hyper-V problem in which some applications using HCS-managed virtual machines could not see or open folders shared from the Windows host into Linux guests through Plan9.
What the Hyper-V patch fixes
The affected configuration uses a Windows 11 26H1 host, an HCS-managed virtual machine, and a Linux guest that receives a host-folder share through the Plan9 protocol. Microsoft says that, for some applications, the shared folder did not appear in the guest or could not be accessed.
KB5129194 marks that documented issue as fixed. The symptom is a sharing and compatibility failure, not evidence that the Linux guest, its filesystem, or the host data is necessarily damaged.

How administrators can install it
Microsoft lists four servicing routes. Choose the one that matches your organization’s update policy rather than installing a package intended for another release.
| Delivery path | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Standalone PCs and hosts managed directly by Windows | Microsoft says the update installs automatically through Windows Update when applicable. |
| Windows Update for Business | Organizations using policy-managed deployment rings | Use your existing approval, deferral and restart controls, then verify that the host reaches build 28000.2956. |
| Microsoft Update Catalog | Administrators needing a standalone package or controlled offline transfer | Search for KB5129194 and select the package matching the host architecture and release. |
| WSUS | Networks that approve updates centrally | Synchronize, approve KB5129194 for the applicable Windows 11 26H1 computers, and monitor installation status. |
Verify the host before deployment
- Open Settings > System > About and confirm that the host is running Windows 11 version 26H1.
- Record the current OS build so you can distinguish an installation failure from a host that already contains the fix.
- Deploy KB5129194 through the selected servicing channel and complete any required restart.
- Confirm the build is 28000.2956 or a later build that supersedes it.
Devices that already have previous updates installed receive only the new contents included in this release, rather than a full replacement of every earlier package.

Test the Linux share after updating
- Start the affected Linux virtual machine on the patched Windows host.
- Use the same application and HCS-managed VM workflow that previously failed.
- Check whether the Plan9-mounted host folder now appears in the guest.
- Open a file and create a harmless test file if the share’s permissions allow it.
If the share still fails, confirm that the VM is actually running on the updated host and that the application uses the HCS-managed path covered by Microsoft’s notice. A different virtualization stack, guest configuration, permission problem or unrelated integration issue is outside the specific fix described for KB5129194.
Other issues included in KB5129194
The update is a bundled Windows out-of-band release, not a Hyper-V-only package. Microsoft’s release notes also list:
Rank #3
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- Instability affecting Remote Desktop Services.
- Failures affecting some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices when used in multichannel modes.
Those fixes may matter even on hosts that never use Linux guests, so assess the update against the wider workload and restart window.
Why this is not a Hyper-V security bulletin
The Plan9 folder-sharing item is described as a known reliability and compatibility issue. Microsoft does not present KB5129194 as a fix for a Hyper-V security vulnerability or an exploit.
Rank #4

Older Microsoft advisories concern different problems. Security Advisory 3108638 (November 10, 2015) described a CPU-chipset denial-of-service condition in which a guest with kernel-mode code-execution privileges could leave the host CPU unresponsive. Bulletin MS17-008 (March 14, 2017) covered separate Hyper-V denial-of-service and remote-code-execution vulnerabilities and identified security update KB4013082. Neither historical advisory describes the 2026 Plan9 regression, and installing KB5129194 should not be treated as a substitute for an organization’s normal security-update program.
Recommended response for IT teams
- Inventory Windows hosts running version 26H1 and Linux guests that depend on Plan9 host-folder shares.
- Prioritize hosts where users report missing or inaccessible shared folders.
- Deploy KB5129194 through the organization’s normal Windows Update for Business or WSUS rings, or use the Catalog for controlled installation.
- Validate the affected application and share after the required restart.
- Document the resulting build and keep separate records for the RDS and USB-audio fixes.
The Bottom Line
For a Windows 11 version 26H1 host affected by Linux guest folders shared through Plan9, install Microsoft’s September 14, 2026 out-of-band KB5129194 and verify build 28000.2956 or later. It is a bundled reliability update, not a Hyper-V security-vulnerability bulletin.
