What CVE-2025-9491 does
A Windows .LNK file is a shortcut. The issue is not simply that a shortcut can open a program or file; it is that crafted data in one could make hazardous content invisible when a user inspects the shortcut through the Windows-provided interface. TechRadar reported that the hidden details could include the shortcut’s full path and commands.
The NVD description, reproduced in the GitHub Advisory Database record, says an attacker could use the flaw to execute code in the context of the current user. That describes the potential consequence, not proof that every shortcut or every Windows PC is vulnerable.
Was the Windows shortcut flaw patched?
TechRadar reported on December 4, 2025, that Microsoft addressed CVE-2025-9491 in the November 2025 Patch Tuesday cumulative update. The report gives the flaw a severity rating of 7.8 out of 10, classified as high; this is TechRadar’s reported rating.

For the applicable package and device-specific status, use Microsoft’s ADV25258226 advisory. The exact affected and fixed Windows builds and applicable KB numbers are not established by the sources cited here, so do not rely on a generic build number or assume that one KB applies to every Windows edition.
How to check and reduce risk
- Check Microsoft’s advisory: Find the entry for ADV25258226 in the Security Update Guide and verify applicability for the Windows edition and build on the device.
- Install security updates: Apply the relevant update through Windows Update or your organization’s normal update process. If the device is managed, follow the administrator’s deployment procedure.
- Be cautious with unexpected shortcuts: Avoid opening .LNK files from untrusted messages, downloads, or removable media. Do not treat a shortcut’s displayed properties as conclusive proof that its contents are safe.
Installing the relevant Windows security update is the remediation reported for this flaw; buying antivirus software or hardware is not a substitute.

The sources cited here do not establish a reliable count of affected Windows versions, a current active-exploitation status, or a complete list of fixed builds and KB packages. The NVD record documents the vulnerability, while TechRadar reports the patch timing and severity rating; Microsoft’s advisory is the source to consult for current applicability and update details.
