Microsoft Publisher is scheduled to retire in October 2026. Microsoft 365 subscribers lose access to Publisher on October 1, 2026, and will no longer be able to open or edit .pub files in Publisher. If you have important Publisher documents, locate and convert them before then; a retirement reminder is not a new feature rollout.

What do the Publisher retirement notifications mean?

The reminder is for organizations with people who use Publisher or .pub files stored in their environments. Microsoft 365 Message Center notice MC1469564, published September 9, 2026, describes the notice as a retirement reminder with no feature rollout. It repeats the October 1 access date for Microsoft 365 subscribers and the separate October 13 support milestone for perpetual versions.

This is a reminder of a previously announced change, not a newly introduced retirement plan: the underlying Message Center post, MC716267, was published February 15, 2024 and updated November 11, 2025. Microsoft Support states that Publisher will reach end of life in October 2026.

When does Publisher stop working?

The date depends on which Publisher edition and Microsoft policy you mean. Microsoft gives different dates for the Microsoft 365 access change and support for perpetual editions.

The October 13 and October 14 dates come from different Microsoft records and conventions. Use October 13 when describing the support boundary stated in Microsoft’s Support article or Message Center notice; use October 14 when referring to the Publisher 2021 Lifecycle listing. For Microsoft 365 subscribers, the practical access cutoff is October 1.

Can you open .pub files after October 1, 2026?

Microsoft says Microsoft 365 subscribers will no longer be able to open or edit Publisher files in Publisher after October 1. The notice does not establish that the files themselves will be deleted: it is the ability to use Publisher to open and edit them that ends. Convert the documents you need while Publisher is still available, and retain an untouched copy of the original files.

How to prepare your Publisher files

  1. Find the files. Search your PCs, OneDrive, and SharePoint for files with the .pub extension. Microsoft’s support guidance specifically suggests searching for .Pub.
  2. Prioritize documents you still use. Identify recurring items such as branded templates, envelopes, labels, calendars, business cards, and programs. These are among the document types Microsoft identifies as Publisher use cases.
  3. Export important files before the cutoff. Open each priority file in Publisher and save it as a PDF or another workable format. Microsoft’s Support article provides PDF conversion guidance and notes that PowerShell or other automation can be used for large archives.
  4. Check the exports. Compare each important PDF with the original, paying attention to fonts, images, links, and print dimensions. This is a practical verification step, not a Microsoft guarantee that converted output will be identical.
  5. Preserve both source and usable copies. Keep the original .pub files in an untouched archive alongside the PDFs and any editable replacement documents you create.

What should replace Microsoft Publisher?

Microsoft points users toward Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Create templates for common publishing tasks. The best fit depends on whether you need an editable layout, branded templates, print accuracy, batch conversion, collaboration, or a particular licensing arrangement. Microsoft’s retirement materials identify these first-party options but do not establish feature-for-feature parity or compare their costs.

  • Word: Consider it for documents that are mainly text and need to remain editable, such as letters, programs, or some brochures.
  • PowerPoint: Consider it when positioning and arranging visual elements on a page is central to the work.
  • Microsoft Create templates: Consider these for starting common branded materials from a template rather than rebuilding every layout from scratch.
  • Other tools: If you evaluate a third-party application, check that it can handle your layout requirements, print output, existing files, collaboration needs, and licensing. The cited Microsoft information does not compare third-party products.

Test the proposed workflow with representative documents before moving a whole archive. A replacement may cover the same type of task without reproducing every Publisher editing feature or preserving every layout detail automatically.

What happens to Publisher 2021 after support ends?

Publisher 2021 has a separate lifecycle milestone from the October 1 Microsoft 365 access change. Microsoft’s Support article and Message Center reminder put the end of support for the perpetual version at October 13, 2026, alongside the end of support for Office LTSC 2021 and Consumer Office 2021. Microsoft’s Lifecycle listing gives Publisher 2021 a retirement date of October 14, 2026, with dates shown in Pacific Time. Treat those as the dates stated by their respective Microsoft records rather than combining them into a single date.
