Microsoft announced the Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2, on September 30, 2025. Its initial release was a controlled rollout—not an update every eligible PC would receive immediately. Microsoft now says 25H2 is available for all eligible devices, but a device may still be waiting in the phased rollout or held back for compatibility reasons. To check, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
What the original rollout announcement meant
Microsoft began offering 25H2 on September 30, 2025, first to eligible PCs already running Windows 11 24H2 when the user had enabled Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Microsoft said it would widen availability over the following months. The announcement described the release as a controlled feature rollout, so enabling the toggle did not guarantee an immediate offer.
Microsoft can also apply a safeguard hold if it detects a possible incompatibility, such as a problem involving an application or driver. In that case, Windows may not offer the update until the issue is addressed. Microsoft’s announcement explains the original rollout approach at How to get the Windows 11 2025 Update.
How to check for Windows 11 25H2
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If Windows offers version 25H2 for that PC, select Download and install.
- Choose when to restart, or postpone the restart if needed.
Microsoft says unmanaged Home and Pro PCs receive 25H2 through an intelligent rollout, and users do not need to take action to be included. Checking manually lets you see whether the update is ready for your particular device; it does not override a safeguard hold. If there is no offer, the device may not yet have reached its rollout turn or may be affected by a compatibility restriction.

Why 25H2 may not appear in Windows Update
- Phased delivery: Broad availability does not mean simultaneous delivery. Microsoft uses an intelligent rollout for unmanaged Home and Pro devices.
- A safeguard hold: Microsoft may pause an offer when it detects a device-specific application or driver compatibility issue.
- Installed Windows version: The upgrade path differs depending on whether the PC is on 24H2 or an earlier release.
Do not try to bypass a compatibility hold based on the availability guidance. Check Microsoft’s maintained Windows 11, version 25H2 known issues and notifications for issue-level updates before troubleshooting further. Issue status can change, so use the dated entries rather than assuming an older summary line reflects every newer update.
What changes if the PC is on 24H2 or an earlier version?
| Starting version | Upgrade route Microsoft describes |
|---|---|
| Windows 11 24H2 | 25H2 is delivered as an enablement package. Microsoft says 24H2 and 25H2 share a code base and servicing branch, allowing delivery with servicing technology similar to monthly updates. |
| Windows 11 23H2 or earlier | Requires a full operating-system swap rather than the 24H2-to-25H2 enablement-package path. |
Microsoft has not supplied a download-size or installation-time comparison in its announcement, so the distinction should not be read as a specific promise about how long either route takes.

How organizations should deploy 25H2
For commercial and education administrators, Microsoft identified Windows Autopatch, the Microsoft 365 admin center, and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) as distribution routes. In its September 30, 2025 announcement, Microsoft said WSUS availability was scheduled for October 14, 2025; it also noted that the Microsoft 365 admin center and similar downloads might be delayed.
- Choose the organization’s managed distribution channel: Windows Autopatch, the Microsoft 365 admin center, or WSUS.
- Start with a targeted deployment: Microsoft recommends validating applications, devices, and infrastructure before expanding deployment.
- Review release health: Check Microsoft’s current issue records and status history as deployment proceeds.
Microsoft defines issue labels in its guidance on checking Windows release health: “Confirmed” means Microsoft has determined an issue affects users after review; “Mitigated” means a workaround is available while the issue remains open; and “Resolved” means a solution has been released and documented in a KB article.

Support period and notable changes
Microsoft said the 25H2 release resets the support period to 24 months for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions, measured from the version release. Check Microsoft’s lifecycle information for edition-specific end dates rather than deriving a calendar date from those durations alone.
Microsoft characterized 25H2 as a leaner, security-focused update. It includes removal of legacy features such as PowerShell 2.0 and the WMIC command-line tool. For commercial editions, Microsoft also identified Wi-Fi 7 support for enterprise connectivity and the option for administrators to remove select pre-installed Microsoft Store apps on Enterprise and Education devices using Intune or Group Policy. These are not universal consumer-facing changes.
