Microsoft also shared sample search timings, but cautioned that they are real-world examples rather than lab-grade benchmarks.
What’s new in PowerToys 0.95?
The headline addition is Light Switch, a utility that changes Windows between light and dark mode on a schedule. Command Palette receives search and display changes, and Peek no longer requires a custom shortcut to open with Space. The release also includes smaller accessibility and usability updates.
How Light Switch schedules light and dark mode
Light Switch can switch themes at times you choose or follow local sunrise and sunset. You can adjust its timing with an offset, select whether the Windows shell, apps, or both should change, and set a keyboard shortcut for switching manually.
This gives you two scheduling approaches: fixed hours for a consistent routine, or sunrise and sunset for a schedule that follows local daylight. The optional offset lets you move the change earlier or later.

How much faster is Command Palette in PowerToys 0.95?
Microsoft’s developer team reported these timings for the same sample searches in versions 0.94 and 0.95:

These are Microsoft’s reported real-world examples, not controlled independent results or lab-grade benchmarks. They show improvements for three of the four listed searches, while “github” changed by just 1 ms. They should not be read as a guaranteed speedup for every search or computer. Microsoft’s PowerToys 0.95 announcement describes the changes and its performance caveat.

What changed in search?
Version 0.95 adds a fuzzy matcher and smarter fallback behavior. Command Palette cancels an older search when you enter a newer query, and Microsoft says the update also reduces exceptions and limits All Apps results by default.
The announcement also notes a grid or gallery result view and an animation toggle. These changes complement the search work by affecting how results are displayed and how the interface behaves.

Peek and other utility updates
Peek now opens with the Space bar by default, so you no longer need to assign a custom shortcut for that action.
- Find My Mouse: You can adjust transparency.
- Keyboard shortcuts: You can ignore shortcut conflicts and clear shortcuts.
- Mouse Pointer Crosshairs: Crosshairs can show a horizontal line, a vertical line, or both.
- Gliding Cursor: Press Esc to cancel it.
- Quick Accent: A Welsh layout is added.
- ZoomIt: Smooth image zooming is added.
How to get PowerToys 0.95
PowerToys is a free, open-source collection of Windows utilities distributed digitally. Microsoft lists GitHub releases, the Microsoft Store, and WinGet as installation routes. Its documentation advises choosing an installer that matches your computer’s architecture and whether you want a per-user or machine-wide installation: Microsoft PowerToys installation guidance.

Version 0.95 is a dated release announced on October 15, 2025, not a claim about which version is latest today. For current availability and installation guidance, check Microsoft’s project documentation or releases rather than assuming 0.95 is the newest version.
