Short answer: A May 2022 report identified a narrow limitation in DuckDuckGo’s browser tracker-loading protection: certain Microsoft scripts could load on third-party websites. The explanation reported at the time was DuckDuckGo’s search-syndication agreement with Microsoft. DuckDuckGo’s current documentation describes a more specific exception for bat.bing.com after a user clicks a DuckDuckGo search ad. That is not evidence that DuckDuckGo sends all of your search or browsing history to Microsoft, nor that Microsoft trackers are allowed in every context.
What the 2022 report actually described
In May 2022, contemporary reporting said DuckDuckGo’s browser did not block some Microsoft-owned scripts from loading on third-party sites, even though its protections blocked many other third-party trackers. Reports attributed the limitation to DuckDuckGo’s search-syndication agreement with Microsoft.
The finding concerned one protection layer—whether a third-party script could load—not a claim that DuckDuckGo handed Microsoft a complete record of users’ searches or browsing. It also did not establish that every Microsoft-owned tracking service was permitted in every DuckDuckGo product or situation.
The historical arrangement should be treated as a dated, reported exception. It should not automatically be presented as proof that the same implementation remains unchanged today.

Why “the script loaded” matters
Tracker protection can act at different stages. Blocking a request before a script loads can stop that request from sending information to the third party. Cookie controls operate later: they can restrict, partition or expire cookies, but they cannot retract data that was already transmitted in the request that loaded the script.
| Protection mechanism | When it acts | What it can prevent | What it cannot undo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party tracker-loading protection | Before or while a third-party resource request is made | The script request and the data sent with it | Information already sent by an allowed request |
| Cookie protection | After a resource loads and attempts to set or read cookies | Some persistent cross-site identifiers | The initial network request or non-cookie signals sent during loading |
| Fingerprinting protection | When scripts or browser APIs attempt to identify a device | Some identifying combinations of browser and device signals | Every possible form of measurement or tracking |
This distinction explains why a browser can still provide meaningful cookie and fingerprinting defenses while allowing a narrowly defined script request. The protections overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Does DuckDuckGo allow Microsoft trackers now?
DuckDuckGo’s current web-tracking documentation describes a specific exception involving Microsoft Advertising’s bat.bing.com. The company says that, when an advertiser wants to measure a conversion after someone clicks that advertiser’s ad on DuckDuckGo, its third-party tracker-loading protection will not block those requests on the advertiser’s website.
“Currently, if an advertiser wants to detect conversions for their own ads that are shown on DuckDuckGo, 3rd-Party Tracker Loading Protection will not block
bat.bing.comrequests from loading on the advertiser’s website following DuckDuckGo ad clicks.”Recommended Free Tools

DuckDuckGo’s page says the requests are blocked in other contexts. It also says its first-party cookie protection expires cookies set by those requests after seven days, while other protections—including third-party cookie and fingerprinting protections—continue to apply. Those are DuckDuckGo’s current policy and product statements, not the result of an independent browser test.
What triggers the exception
- The user clicks an ad shown in DuckDuckGo Private Search.
- The click leads to the advertiser’s website.
- The advertiser uses Microsoft Advertising’s
bat.bing.comrequest for conversion measurement.
What the exception does not mean
- It does not mean all Microsoft trackers are allowed across the web.
- It does not mean
bat.bing.comis permitted in ordinary browsing on unrelated sites. - It does not by itself show that DuckDuckGo shares a user’s complete search or browsing history with Microsoft.
Does DuckDuckGo share my browsing history with Microsoft?
DuckDuckGo says it does not save or share users’ search or browsing history when they use its search service, apps or extensions. It separately says Microsoft scripts have not been embedded in its search engine or apps, which it describes as not tracking users.

That statement addresses DuckDuckGo’s own search engine and applications. The 2022 controversy concerned scripts that third-party websites could load through a browser protection exception. Those are different data flows and should not be collapsed into one claim.
What DuckDuckGo says about its Microsoft partnership
DuckDuckGo describes Microsoft as its search-advertising partner. According to DuckDuckGo, Microsoft committed not to associate ad-click behavior with a user profile and not to store or share that behavior beyond accounting purposes. This is the company’s description of the contractual commitment; it is not independent verification of Microsoft’s internal handling.

The partnership context helps explain why conversion measurement for DuckDuckGo ads can receive a narrowly defined exception. It does not establish that all Microsoft-owned advertising or analytics services receive the same treatment.

Desktop browser and extensions
The documented bat.bing.com rule concerns DuckDuckGo’s web-tracking protections around clicks on DuckDuckGo search ads. The exact protections available can depend on the browser and extension implementation.
DuckDuckGo Android browser
Android’s App Tracking Protection is a separate feature that blocks trackers inside other apps. DuckDuckGo says it can make limited exceptions when needed to keep an app working and does not promise that any service eliminates all hidden tracking. This Android behavior should not be used as a blanket description of DuckDuckGo’s desktop browser or iOS products.
iOS and other environments
Protection coverage and controls can vary by platform. Check the product-specific documentation and settings for the device you use rather than assuming that one platform’s exception or safeguard applies everywhere.
What users should take from the controversy
- Read the headline narrowly. The 2022 story was about Microsoft scripts loading on third-party sites under a reported contractual limitation, not proof of universal Microsoft tracking.
- Distinguish loading from cookies. A cookie restriction cannot erase information sent when an allowed script request was made.
- Use the current documented scope. DuckDuckGo now describes a
bat.bing.comconversion-measurement exception after clicks on its own search ads, with requests blocked in other contexts. - Separate company claims from verification. DuckDuckGo’s statements about history, scripts and Microsoft’s commitments are policy claims; they are not an independent audit or live network measurement.
- Expect platform-specific behavior. Browser, extension and Android app protections are not interchangeable.
How to evaluate a privacy-browser exception
- Identify the resource. Find out which domain or script is allowed, rather than treating an entire company’s tracking infrastructure as one category.
- Identify the trigger. Determine whether the request occurs during ordinary browsing, after an ad click, or only inside a particular app.
- Check the stage of protection. Ask whether the browser blocks loading, limits cookies after loading, reduces fingerprinting, or uses several of these controls together.
- Check the platform. Confirm whether the statement applies to the desktop browser, an extension, Android’s App Tracking Protection, or another product.
- Separate policy from evidence. A vendor’s explanation describes intended behavior; an independent test would be needed to verify what is actually sent in a particular release.
The Bottom Line
DuckDuckGo did permit a reported Microsoft-script exception in 2022, and its current documentation still describes a narrowly scoped bat.bing.com exception for measuring conversions after clicks on DuckDuckGo search ads. That is materially different from saying DuckDuckGo shares all browsing history with Microsoft or permits Microsoft trackers everywhere.
