First compare the same URL with another public link and, if possible, Teams on the web and desktop. Then inspect the page metadata and image access if you own the site. Microsoft’s documented Share to Teams flow requires either a thumbnail or both a title and description; an authentication-required URL does not receive a preview in that flow.
What a Teams link preview contains
Teams can unfurl a website URL into an Adaptive Card containing an image, title and description. The card is built from information that Teams can retrieve from the destination page; it is not a screenshot of what you see in your browser.
Microsoft documents Schema.org metadata and supported micro-capability templates for rich website-link unfurls. In the Share to Teams web-app flow, Microsoft also documents Open Graph fields such as og:title, og:description and og:image. Treat those requirements as flow-specific rather than a guarantee that every Teams surface uses exactly the same parser.
Start with a scope check
- Paste a second public URL. If the second link gets an image, the original page or its metadata is the likely focus. If neither link gets an image, investigate the client, account or tenant.
- Compare Teams clients. Try Teams on the web and the desktop app, if both are available. This comparison is diagnostic; Microsoft does not promise identical rendering in every client.
- Note what is actually missing. Record whether the card has no image but does show a title and description, has no card at all, or shows an older image or name. These symptoms point to different checks.
Save the exact URL, the time you tested it, the client used and whether another public URL worked. That information is more useful than repeatedly pasting the same link.

Why the image is missing
The page or image is not publicly fetchable
In Microsoft’s Share to Teams web-app guidance, a URL that requires authentication does not receive a preview. The same practical check applies to the image itself: a thumbnail hosted behind a login, private network, expiring token or restrictive firewall may be unavailable to the service fetching the card. Open the page in a private browser window and inspect the image URL directly without relying on an existing sign-in session.
The page does not provide preview metadata
If the intended title, description or image is absent from the page metadata, Teams has little reliable information to display. For the documented Share to Teams flow, verify that the HTML contains the intended Open Graph properties:

Use an absolute HTTPS image URL and ensure the tags are present in the initial HTML response, not only inserted after a browser-side script runs. If your implementation uses Microsoft’s Schema.org micro-capabilities, validate the website-link metadata as Microsoft recommends, then test the URL in the Teams compose box.
The image request fails
A correct-looking tag is not enough if the image returns an error, redirects to a sign-in page, is blocked by a bot rule, or is served only after client-side JavaScript executes. Request the image URL in a private window and check the response. The URL should resolve consistently to an image, not an HTML error document. Check host-level access controls, hotlink protection, robots or firewall rules and any short-lived signed URL.

The result is stale
When a page’s name or thumbnail changed but Teams still shows the old value, caching is a plausible explanation. Microsoft Q&A discussions contain user reports of stale thumbnails and suggestions such as waiting or adding a changed query parameter to the URL. Those are anecdotal workarounds: the official guidance reviewed here does not establish a universal cache lifetime or a standard user-facing cache-reset command. Re-test after the metadata has been live for a while, and do not assume that clearing your local browser cache will purge a server-side preview.
The URL is unusual or redirects
Test the final canonical URL rather than a tracking or multi-step redirect when possible. Confirm that the redirect chain ends at the public page and that the metadata on that final response names the intended image. A URL that works only after a user interaction, geographic rule or authenticated redirect can fail during unfurling.
Fixes for people who only share links
Use a public, canonical URL
Copy the page’s normal HTTPS address, not a private dashboard link or an address that depends on your session. If the owner offers a public article page, use that page instead of a preview, staging or intranet URL.
Allow time for a changed preview
After an owner changes metadata, wait and paste the URL again. A query-string variation is reported by some Microsoft Q&A participants as a possible way to request a new fetch, but it is not an official guarantee and may create a different shared URL. Use it only when your team accepts that trade-off.

Capture evidence before escalating
- Exact URL and whether it redirects.
- Whether the page opens without signing in.
- Whether the image URL opens publicly.
- Which Teams client and account show the problem.
- Whether another public URL produces a thumbnail.
Send those details to the site owner or your Teams administrator. There is no universally documented cache-clearing procedure for ordinary website previews that a user can apply to every tenant and client.
Fixes for website owners
1. Publish all three preview values
For the Share to Teams flow, provide a thumbnail plus title and description. Keep the values accurate and concise, and place the Open Graph tags in the server-rendered head of the page:

</head>Do not rely on a tag that exists only after hydration. Confirm the raw HTML returned to an unauthenticated request contains the values.
2. Make the image reachable
- Use a fully qualified HTTPS URL.
- Return the actual image from that URL for unauthenticated requests.
- Remove login requirements, expiring tokens and IP allowlists from the preview asset.
- Check that redirects end at the image and that your firewall or CDN does not challenge automated fetches.
- Keep the URL stable while diagnosing; changing filenames or query strings can create additional cache keys.
3. Validate structured data when you use it
Microsoft’s Micro-Capability & Schema guidance describes validating a website link’s structured data before pasting it into Teams. Run the validator against the public URL, correct reported metadata errors, then test the same URL in the compose area. A validator result does not prove every Teams client will render identically, so verify the actual card.

4. Check the delivered response, not just your browser
Inspect the response as an unauthenticated request from outside your network. Look for a 200 response, the expected content type for the image, and the intended metadata in the first HTML response. If your CDN serves different HTML by user agent, region or cookie, make sure the anonymous variant still includes the preview fields.
5. Retest after deployment
Paste the exact public URL after the corrected metadata and asset are live. Record whether the new card appears in Teams web, desktop or both. If an old card remains, allow time for fetching and report the old and new values when escalating; Microsoft’s published material does not specify a universal refresh interval.

When to escalate
Escalate after you have tested a public URL, checked the metadata and image access, compared clients and allowed reasonable time for a changed preview. Include the exact URL, authentication status, expected metadata, image URL, client surface and observed card. Site owners should attach the raw metadata and image response details. This narrows the issue without claiming a cache behavior that Microsoft has not documented universally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding an Open Graph image guarantee that Teams will show it?
No. It supplies the documented metadata for the Share to Teams flow, but the page and image must also be reachable, and Teams clients may not render every link identically.
Will clearing my Teams or browser cache force a new website thumbnail?
There is no universal, officially documented cache-clearing procedure for ordinary website previews. Re-test after changes and treat query-parameter suggestions as anecdotal.
Can I fix a missing preview if I do not own the website?
You can use a public canonical URL, compare another link and collect diagnostic details. The site owner must change metadata or image access.
