Compare shared web hosting plans and cost by checking the amount charged today, the renewal price, billing term, website allowance, storage, backups, email, SSL, and resource limits—not the advertised monthly rate alone. In the August 2026 U.S. pricing snapshot, IONOS has the lowest displayed introductory offer, while DreamHost, Namecheap, Hostinger, and SiteGround target different value priorities.

The cheapest suitable plan is the plan that covers your website’s requirements at a realistic first-term and renewal cost. A low monthly equivalent may require several years of prepayment, exclude business email or backups, or renew at a much higher rate.

Key takeaways

  • Shared hosting keeps prices low by placing multiple websites on one server and sharing CPU, memory, storage, and network resources.
  • IONOS displays a $1-per-month first-term Plus offer, but the displayed Plus renewal price is $14 per month; plan labels, terms, taxes, and promotions can vary.
  • SiteGround’s displayed StartUp offer rises from $2.99 per month for the first 12 months to $17.99 per month at renewal.
  • GoDaddy’s displayed Economy plan charges $215.64 upfront for a three-year term and shows $551.63 for renewal, with SSL renewal displayed separately at $119.99 per year.
  • Backups, email, SSL, domain renewal, CPU and memory limits, and the number of websites can matter more than advertised storage or bandwidth.

How should you compare shared web hosting plans and cost?

Compare each plan using four separate figures: the promotional monthly equivalent, the amount charged today, the renewal monthly equivalent, and the expected cost over the period you expect to keep the site.

A useful calculation is:

Effective monthly cost =
(total hosting payments during the comparison period
 + required extras
 + expected renewal charges)
÷ number of months

For a five-year website, calculate the first-term charge, four years of renewal charges, domain renewals, email fees, backup or security add-ons, and taxes where applicable. A provider should not be called “cheapest” without stating the billing term, geography, promotion, included features, and comparison period.

What is shared web hosting?

Shared web hosting places multiple websites on the same physical or virtual server. The websites share underlying CPU, memory, storage, and network resources, which allows the provider to offer a lower price than a VPS, cloud server, or dedicated server.

IONOS describes shared hosting as multiple websites sharing server resources and positions the service for entry-level businesses and simpler websites. Shared hosting is convenient, but neighboring websites and the provider’s resource limits can affect performance during busy periods.

“Unlimited traffic” or “unmetered bandwidth” does not mean unlimited CPU, RAM, database activity, PHP workers, concurrent processes, file counts, email sending, or background jobs. A shared-hosting account can be throttled or asked to upgrade when the account uses more resources than the plan or acceptable-use policy allows.

Who should use shared hosting?

Shared hosting is usually appropriate for websites with modest technical and traffic requirements, especially when low cost and easy setup matter more than guaranteed resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Shared hosting is a good fit for Shared hosting may be a poor fit for
Personal blogs High-traffic publishers
Portfolios and brochure sites Busy ecommerce stores
Small service businesses Large membership sites
Basic landing pages Applications requiring persistent processes
Low-to-moderate traffic WordPress sites Custom server software or root access
Small informational websites Strict isolation or specialized compliance requirements

Shared hosting can also work for a small online store if traffic is modest and the provider offers a clear upgrade path. A growing store should prioritize database performance, caching, backup restoration, payment compatibility, security responsibilities, and the ability to move to VPS or cloud hosting when traffic spikes.

How much does shared hosting cost?

Shared hosting prices vary by country, currency, billing term, promotion, logged-in status, taxes, and checkout date. The following U.S. figures are a pricing snapshot from August 2026, not permanent prices.

Provider and displayed plan Introductory signal Amount or term shown Renewal signal Notable features or limitation
IONOS Essential $4/month One-year term displayed $8/month displayed Entry-level limits on websites, storage, databases, and resources; taxes apply
IONOS Plus $1/month Separate one-year promotional offer displayed $14/month displayed Promotion and plan presentation can vary by page, account, and date
Hostinger Premium-style plan $2.49/month Four-year term in a third-party April 23, 2026 snapshot $7.99/month after the term; $11.99 standard monthly price cited Verify the official cart because term and offer determine the actual price
Namecheap shared hosting Varies Plan and promotion dependent Verify at checkout Automatic SSL, email/domain capacity, and AutoBackup on selected plans
DreamHost Web Hosting Launch From $1.99/month Full term and taxes apply at checkout Verify at checkout 25 GB NVMe, free SSL, 14-day backup-retention information, and unlimited domain email displayed
Bluehost shared hosting Varies Monthly, 12-month, and 36-month terms available or displayed separately Separate renewal prices by term Free SSL and weekly backups shown on pricing material
SiteGround StartUp $2.99/month Prepaid 12-month term $17.99/month One website; daily backups, SSL, CDN, email, and support displayed
SiteGround GrowBig $4.99/month Prepaid 12-month term $29.99/month More storage, multiple sites, on-demand backups, and staging
SiteGround GoGeek $7.99/month Prepaid 12-month term $44.99/month More storage, staging/Git, private DNS, and priority support
GoDaddy Economy $5.99/month Three-year term; $215.64 charged today $551.63 shown for the displayed renewal term One website and 25 GB NVMe shown; SSL renewal displayed separately at $119.99 annually

Which shared-hosting features matter most?

How many websites can the plan host?

The number of websites matters more than storage when you plan to operate multiple domains. Check whether each website receives a separate document root, database allowance, email allowance, and backup coverage. Also check whether staging sites, aliases, subdomains, or parked domains count toward the limit.

Provider example Displayed website allowance Important qualification
SiteGround StartUp One website GrowBig and GoGeek display unlimited websites
GoDaddy Economy One website Deluxe displays 10 websites; Ultimate displays 25
IONOS Essential and higher displayed tiers From one to unlimited websites Higher site counts do not remove CPU, memory, database, or inode limits

Sources: SiteGround plan details, GoDaddy plan details, and IONOS plan details.

Is more storage better than stronger resources?

More storage is not automatically better performance. Compare storage type, storage quota, inode or file-count limits, database storage, mailbox storage, and backup storage separately. A small site with stronger CPU, RAM, caching, or PHP-worker allocations can perform better than a larger “unlimited storage” plan with restrictive processing limits.

Provider Displayed storage examples Other storage-related detail
SiteGround 10 GB, 50 GB, and 100 GB tiers Higher tiers add features such as staging and on-demand backups
GoDaddy 25 GB, 50 GB, and 75 GB NVMe tiers Storage and website allowance vary by plan
IONOS 10 GB, 100 GB, and unlimited tiers Displayed plans list a 262,144-inode limit
DreamHost Launch 25 GB NVMe Free SSL and 14-day backup-retention information displayed

Sources: SiteGround, GoDaddy, IONOS, and DreamHost web-hosting details.

What backup policy should you expect?

Compare backup frequency, retention, restoration method, whether files and databases are both included, whether on-demand backups are available, and whether the copies are stored separately from the hosting server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Provider or plan example Displayed backup information What to verify
SiteGround all displayed plans Free daily backups GrowBig and GoGeek add on-demand backups; verify restoration scope
DreamHost hosting 14-day backup retention Confirm applicable restoration process and refund terms
IONOS displayed plans Daily backup and restore features Confirm retention and plan-level limits
GoDaddy standard Economy Does not present the same backup package as displayed WordPress plans GoDaddy WordPress Basic lists weekly backups; compare products separately

Sources: SiteGround, DreamHost, IONOS, and GoDaddy.

Provider backups are not a complete backup strategy. Important websites should retain an independent copy, ideally in separate storage, because a same-provider backup may not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, account suspension, or a restoration failure.

Is free SSL really free?

Free SSL is common, but check whether the certificate covers every domain and subdomain, renews automatically, remains free for the full hosting term, and is not replaced by a paid certificate at checkout.

GoDaddy’s displayed Economy listing shows free SSL for one year and separately displays a $119.99 annual SSL renewal, while the displayed WordPress Basic listing says the SSL certificate has no renewal fees. The difference shows why SSL must be checked at the plan level rather than assumed across one provider.

Does shared hosting include email?

Email can change the true cost of a small-business website. Compare mailbox count, mailbox storage, sending limits, spam filtering, webmail, IMAP/POP/SMTP support, and whether email is included on the exact plan.

DreamHost displays unlimited email at your domain, while SiteGround displays free email and IONOS displays professional email on the cited plan information. Email included with hosting may still be unsuitable for high-volume or business-critical communication, where a dedicated email service may be more appropriate.

What domain costs should be included?

Separate domain registration, domain renewal, WHOIS privacy, transfer fees, premium-domain pricing, and hosting renewal. A “free domain” generally means free for the first year and selected extensions only. Domain renewal continues even if hosting is canceled unless the domain is separately canceled or transferred.

Which billing term should you choose?

Billing term Best for Main advantage Main drawback
Month-to-month Testing a host, uncertain projects, short campaigns Lowest commitment Usually the highest monthly equivalent
Annual Most personal and small-business websites Balances savings and flexibility Requires a larger upfront payment than monthly billing
Multi-year Established sites with a confident long-term outlook Often the lowest promotional monthly equivalent Large upfront payment and potentially expensive renewal

Annual billing is the best compromise for many beginners because annual billing costs less than month-to-month hosting without committing the buyer to three or four years. Multi-year prepayment makes sense only when the site is expected to remain active, the upfront cost is affordable, the renewal terms are understood, and the refund and migration policies are acceptable.

ARRIS Surfboard G34 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem & Wi-Fi 6 Router | AX3000
  • MultiGig speed for today & tomorrow: DOCSIS 3.1 performance supports cable internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps, delivering ultrafast streaming, gaming, and downloads.
  • Save on rental fees: Own your modem and avoid monthly equipment charges - check with your cable provider for plan compatibility.
  • Compact, modern design: Space saving footprint with simple LED indicators for power, upstream/downstream, and online status.
  • Easy setup: Connect cable, power on, and activate with your cable provider. Then join the default Wi-Fi or personalize your own Wi-Fi network name and password.
  • Wi-Fi 6 Coverage: Includes dual-band W-Fi 6 (AX3000) delivering up to 3 Gbps wireless performance for your whole home.

A $2.99 monthly offer may require paying $107.64 or more upfront depending on the term and provider. The checkout total, not the monthly equivalent, is the amount that leaves the bank account today.

Which provider is best for each use case?

What is the cheapest suitable plan?

For one basic website, compare IONOS Essential, Namecheap’s entry shared plan, DreamHost’s entry plan, and a low-tier Hostinger plan. IONOS has the lowest displayed introductory signal in this snapshot, while Namecheap and DreamHost can be attractive when included SSL, email, backups, and domain costs are counted. Confirm the live cart before ranking any provider.

What is best for a personal site or blog?

A personal blog or portfolio usually needs one website, free SSL, enough storage for planned media, automatic backups, WordPress or CMS support, and a reasonable upgrade path. DreamHost, Namecheap, Hostinger, and IONOS are sensible candidates for comparison; a premium managed plan may be unnecessary unless convenience and support justify its renewal price.

What is best for a small business website?

A small business should prioritize reliable support, business email, backups with usable restoration, migration help, clear resource limits, DNS management, and SSL before chasing the lowest first-year price. DreamHost, SiteGround GrowBig, higher Bluehost shared tiers, and IONOS Starter or Plus are candidates, but the final choice depends on email terms, renewal cost, and the number of sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is best for WordPress?

WordPress buyers should compare automatic updates, staging, caching, CDN, malware protection, PHP support, WP-CLI or SSH, migration help, and backup restoration—not merely whether WordPress can be installed.

SiteGround displays managed updates, migrations, caching, CDN, and WordPress tools. GoDaddy WordPress Basic displays WordPress preinstallation, weekly backups, automatic core updates, a migration tool, and CDN-related performance features. SiteGround offers a stronger managed-feature package in the cited comparison, but its displayed renewal prices are substantially higher.

What is best for multiple small websites?

Compare SiteGround GrowBig or GoGeek, GoDaddy Deluxe or Ultimate, higher IONOS tiers, and Hostinger multi-site plans by actual storage, database, email, backup, CPU, memory, and inode limits. “Unlimited websites” does not mean unlimited server resources or equal performance per site.

What is best for included backups?

SiteGround displays daily backups on all listed plans, with on-demand backups on GrowBig and GoGeek. IONOS displays daily backup and restore features, and DreamHost displays 14-day backup retention. Backup frequency alone is insufficient: confirm restoration, retention, file and database coverage, and independent storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is best for avoiding a long contract?

Choose month-to-month or annual billing from a provider that clearly shows the applicable renewal price. A higher monthly amount can be cheaper overall than a multi-year promotion if the site may close, move, or change providers before the prepaid term ends.

How do you calculate the real hosting cost?

Use the following ownership-cost model:

Hosting paid today
+ domain renewal
+ email add-ons
+ backup and security add-ons
+ SSL renewal
+ expected renewal charges
+ taxes
= realistic ownership cost

For example, GoDaddy’s displayed Economy page shows $5.99 per month, but the same three-year offer shows $215.64 due today and $551.63 for auto-renewal over the displayed term. The page also displays a separate $119.99 annual SSL renewal for that plan. Those checkout and renewal figures are more useful than $5.99 alone.

SiteGround provides another clear example: the displayed StartUp promotion is $2.99 per month for 12 months and renews at $17.99 per month. A buyer who keeps the site for several years must budget for the renewal rate rather than treating the first-year promotion as the normal price.

What should you check at checkout?

  1. Select the exact billing term you intend to purchase.
  2. Record the promotional monthly equivalent.
  3. Record the total charged today, including the number of prepaid months.
  4. Expand the renewal details and record whether renewal is monthly, annual, or for the same prepaid term.
  5. Remove optional backups, security, SEO, email, builder, or premium SSL add-ons unless the website needs them.
  6. Confirm whether domain privacy is included.
  7. Confirm the domain registration and renewal price for the selected extension.
  8. Confirm that SSL renews free for the exact plan and all required domains.
  9. Check refund eligibility, duration, and exclusions for domains, add-ons, monthly plans, and promotional products.
  10. Check taxes and the account’s currency or country.
  11. Review auto-renewal status and know how to disable it if necessary.
  12. Save a PDF or screenshot of the order summary and terms.

GoDaddy is a particularly important example because its displayed Economy page exposes the initial charge, auto-renewal charge, and SSL renewal separately. IONOS and SiteGround display 30-day money-back language on the cited pages, but refund exclusions still need to be checked before purchase. DreamHost refund terms and exclusions should also be confirmed on its current pricing page.

How should you score competing plans?

A weighted score prevents a low introductory price from dominating the decision. Start with this model:

Criterion Suggested weight What to inspect
Three-year or expected-period cost 25% Upfront payment, renewal, taxes, and required extras
Reliability and support 20% Support availability and service-level language
Backups and recovery 15% Frequency, retention, restoration, and independent storage
Performance resources 15% CPU, RAM, PHP workers, caching, CDN, and storage type
Included essentials 10% SSL, email, domain, migration, and control panel
Ease of use 10% Dashboard, WordPress tools, DNS, staging, and migration
Upgrade path 5% VPS, cloud, managed WordPress, or higher-resource options

Adjust the weights for the project. A budget beginner might assign 35% to cost, 20% to ease of use, 20% to included essentials, 15% to support, and 10% to backups. A business site might assign 25% to reliability and support, 20% to backups, 20% to cost, 20% to performance, 10% to email and domain features, and 5% to the upgrade path.

What does “unlimited” mean in shared hosting?

“Unlimited” usually describes one marketing category, not unlimited use of every server resource. Investigate CPU seconds, RAM, PHP workers, concurrent processes, inodes, database size, email sending, fair-use rules, backup limits, visitor guidance, and throttling or suspension policies.

A plan can offer unlimited websites or bandwidth while limiting the number of files, database activity, memory available to PHP, or simultaneous processes. Resource limits are especially important for ecommerce, membership sites, image-heavy websites, automated imports, and websites with intensive background jobs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When is shared hosting not enough?

Alternative Consider it when Trade-off
Managed WordPress hosting You want specialized updates, caching, staging, backups, and WordPress support Usually costs more and may restrict plugins or applications
VPS hosting You need more predictable resources, custom software, SSH control, or isolation Higher cost and greater administration or security responsibility
Cloud hosting You expect variable traffic, scaling needs, or distributed infrastructure Pricing and configuration can be more complex
Dedicated hosting You require an entire server’s resources or strict isolation Highest cost and significant management responsibility
Static hosting The site consists mainly of static HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and assets Dynamic databases, server-side code, and traditional email may require separate services
Website builder You want a visual setup with hosting bundled into one platform Less portability and sometimes less control over hosting or migration

Shared hosting is not automatically inferior. Shared hosting can be the simplest and most economical choice for a low-traffic site. VPS or cloud hosting adds cost, administration, and security responsibilities, so an upgrade is justified by resource, control, traffic, or compliance needs—not by marketing language alone.

What are the main shared-hosting traps?

Promotional pricing can hide a high long-term cost

A low introductory rate may require three- or four-year prepayment and renew at several times the original rate. SiteGround’s displayed StartUp price rises from $2.99 to $17.99 per month, while GoDaddy’s displayed Economy offer rises from $215.64 due today to $551.63 at renewal for the shown term.

Free domains are usually temporary

A free domain normally applies to the first year and selected extensions. Domain renewal remains a separate recurring cost, and a domain may need to be transferred or canceled separately from hosting.

SSL terms differ between products

Free SSL on generic shared hosting does not guarantee free SSL on a provider’s WordPress, builder, or higher-security product. Compare automatic renewal and coverage for every domain and subdomain.

ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem | Up to 1 Gbps Plans
  • Multi‑Gig speed for today & tomorrow: DOCSIS 3.1 performance supports cable internet plans up to 2 Gbps, delivering ultra‑fast streaming, gaming, and downloads.
  • Save on rental fees: Own your modem and avoid monthly equipment charges—check with your cable provider for plan compatibility.
  • Compact, modern design: Space‑saving footprint with discrete LED indicators for power, upstream/downstream, and online status.
  • Easy setup: Connect cable, power on, and activate with your cable provider. Then connect a Wi‑Fi router to the Ethernet port for home Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Modem only: This cable modem requires a separate Wi-Fi router or mesh system for home Wi-Fi network.

Email is easy to overlook

A hosting plan can look inexpensive until professional email is added. Check mailbox limits, storage, sending restrictions, spam protection, and whether business-critical communication should use a dedicated email provider.

Resource limits matter more than bandwidth

“Unlimited bandwidth” cannot compensate for low CPU, RAM, PHP-worker, database, or process limits. Resource throttling can appear as slow page loads, failed imports, timeouts, or intermittent errors even when visitor bandwidth appears unrestricted.

Data-center geography affects a U.S. audience

U.S. readers should compare available U.S. data centers, CDN inclusion, latency to the target audience, data-residency requirements, and whether the provider automatically assigns the server location. Global branding does not prove low latency for U.S. visitors.

Refund guarantees have exclusions

Check exclusions for domains, setup fees, add-ons, monthly plans, promotional products, renewals, and suspended accounts. A 30-day money-back statement does not necessarily mean every purchase component is refundable.

Bottom line: which shared hosting plan should you buy?

Buy the cheapest plan that meets the website’s actual needs after the introductory term. IONOS is the lowest-introductory-price candidate in the August 2026 snapshot. Namecheap and Hostinger are strong budget candidates when current checkout pricing remains competitive. DreamHost is attractive when included email, SSL, storage, and backup retention matter. SiteGround offers the strongest displayed managed WordPress feature package but demands careful renewal budgeting. GoDaddy and Bluehost suit buyers who value mainstream, integrated ecosystems, provided that add-ons, SSL, term length, and renewal charges are audited.

The practical winner is not the provider with the smallest monthly number. The practical winner is the plan with an acceptable total cost, sufficient resources, usable backups, required email and SSL, an appropriate website allowance, and a realistic upgrade path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is shared hosting good for WordPress?

Shared hosting is good for a low-to-moderate traffic WordPress site when the plan includes adequate PHP resources, backups, SSL, updates, and support. Managed WordPress hosting may be preferable when staging, specialized caching, automatic updates, or WordPress-focused support justify the higher cost.

How much traffic can shared hosting handle?

Shared hosting can handle low-to-moderate traffic, but no universal visitor limit applies. CPU, RAM, PHP workers, database activity, concurrent processes, caching, and traffic spikes usually matter more than an advertised unlimited-bandwidth label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you pay for three years of hosting upfront?

Pay for three years upfront only when the website is likely to remain active, the upfront payment is affordable, and the renewal price and refund terms are understood. Annual billing is usually a safer compromise for a new site.

Are hosting-provider backups enough?

Hosting-provider backups are useful but should not be your only backup. Keep an independent copy because provider backups may have limited retention, difficult restoration, shared infrastructure, or no protection against account suspension or widespread incidents.

Does free SSL mean SSL will never cost extra?

Free SSL does not guarantee that every product, domain, or renewal remains free. Confirm automatic renewal, domain coverage, and plan-specific SSL terms at checkout; GoDaddy’s displayed Economy and WordPress Basic listings illustrate how SSL terms can differ.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
