You can put Microsoft 365 on your desktop as an app-style window using Microsoft Edge, but that does not install the full desktop Office suite—and it may not be a true progressive web app (PWA). Open the Microsoft 365 apps portal, sign in, then in Edge choose Settings and more (…) > More tools > Apps > Install this site as an app. If Edge instead shows an App available prompt, the site has been identified as an installable PWA.
What “install Office as an app” means
“App” can mean three different things here: a website installed in a browser-managed window, an installable PWA, or the full desktop Office software. Edge can turn a website into a site app that opens separately from ordinary tabs. Microsoft distinguishes this from a PWA, which can offer capabilities such as offline operation and notifications. The Microsoft 365 portal lists web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other apps, but Microsoft’s current materials do not explicitly confirm that the portal itself is a PWA.
- Site app: A website added through Edge’s Install this site as an app command. It opens in its own window for quick access, but does not have all PWA capabilities.
- PWA: A web app that a browser identifies as installable. In Edge, an App available indicator appears in the address bar when a site is recognized as an installable PWA.
- Desktop Office: Installed software obtained through a separate Microsoft 365 account workflow. Installing a site app does not download or activate the desktop suite.
Microsoft Support describes sites installed as apps as “websites that you pin to your Start menu or taskbar for quick access.”
Install Microsoft 365 as a site app in Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge and go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps. Sign in if prompted. The portal provides browser versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more.
- Open Settings and more (…) in Edge.
- Select More tools > Apps > Install this site as an app.
- Follow Edge’s prompts to finish. The portal will open in a dedicated app-style window.
Microsoft says Edge can install any website this way. This route creates a site app; it does not by itself establish that the Microsoft 365 portal is a PWA.

Install a site as a PWA when Edge offers it
When Edge identifies a website as an installable PWA, it displays an App available prompt in the address bar. Select that prompt and then choose Install. Use this route when it appears; do not treat the generic site-app command as proof that Edge has identified a PWA.
PWA technology can support features such as offline use and notifications, but that general capability does not establish that Word, Excel, or the Microsoft 365 portal supports offline editing in this setup. Follow the capabilities actually offered for the specific app.

Manage, pin, or remove the installed app
- In Edge’s address bar, open
edge://apps. - Select the installed app’s details or menu.
- Choose the action you need: pin to the taskbar or Start, create a desktop shortcut, set the app to start when you sign in to your device, or uninstall it.
During uninstall, Edge offers an option to delete the app’s history and data.
Can I install Office web apps in Chrome?
Microsoft documents a Chrome PWA installation workflow specifically for Outlook on the web and Outlook.com. Sign in to Outlook, open Chrome’s menu, and select Install Outlook. That Outlook-specific guidance should not be taken as confirmation that every Office web app—or the Microsoft 365 portal as a whole—is installable as a PWA in Chrome.

Site app, PWA, or desktop Office: which should you use?

For a separate window and quick access to Word or Excel in the browser, the Edge site-app option is the direct route. If you need the installed desktop software, use Microsoft’s separate download and installation instructions.
