If Microsoft isn’t sending your security code, first check the destination email or phone and confirm that the masked contact details are yours. If the code still does not arrive, stop requesting more codes, try another verification method already linked to your account, and allow time for a possible temporary block to clear.
Way 1: Check where the code should arrive
Microsoft sends verification codes only to an email address or phone number already listed as a sign-in verification method. At the verification prompt, compare the masked destination with your contact details. If it is unfamiliar or no longer accessible, choose another listed method rather than repeatedly requesting a code.
If you chose email
- Check the inbox for the correct address, including Junk or Spam. A valid Microsoft verification message comes from an address ending in @accountprotection.microsoft.com. If needed, add that sender to your trusted senders.
- If the destination is another Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or MSN account, use separate private-browsing windows to keep both accounts signed in while retrieving the code.
- If you can sign in and still have access to a security method, review or update your details at Microsoft account security.
If you chose a text message
- Check whether your phone blocks messages from unknown senders, whether its message inbox is full, and whether the messaging app is working properly.
- Temporary SMS service problems or regional restrictions can interfere with delivery. Microsoft does not accept VOIP numbers for sign-in verification; use a mobile number.
- SMS availability is changing: Microsoft says it is beginning to phase out SMS for authentication and account recovery on personal Microsoft accounts. The methods offered depend on the account, so use the options shown on your own security page.
If you chose Microsoft Authenticator
Check the device’s internet connection, update the app, allow notifications, verify that the device date and time are correct, and test without a VPN. An authenticator app may also generate codes while its device is offline, if that option is set up for your account.
Way 2: Try another method or wait for a temporary block
Microsoft may temporarily stop sending codes after unusual activity, repeated requests, or other risk signals. Select another verification method already linked to the account—for example, an alternate email instead of SMS—and try a different network. Avoid rapid or repeated requests; Microsoft warns that excessive requests can cause it to block delivery.

Microsoft’s guidance is to wait a day for a temporary block to clear. If delivery still does not work after 24 hours, wait longer—up to a week if possible—rather than continuing to request codes. The timing is not guaranteed.
If you cannot use any listed verification method
If you know your password and can still access at least one security method, add and confirm a replacement before removing the method you have lost. Replacing all security information at once can restrict access for 30 days.

If none of your listed security information is available, choose I don’t have any of these during sign-in and follow Microsoft’s steps to replace it. Microsoft says you must wait 30 days before signing in after replacing all security information. If you also cannot use your password, start with the Microsoft Sign-in Helper and follow the account recovery form guidance. Support agents cannot bypass account security by sending verification or password-reset codes.
If you previously generated a Microsoft account recovery code, it is a separate 25-digit recovery option. Creating a new recovery code invalidates the old one; keep it somewhere safe, not on a device you use to sign in.

Choose backup methods before you need them
Microsoft says an account can have up to 10 verification methods, though available choices vary. Options may include email, Microsoft Authenticator, passkeys, and, where offered, a phone number. Microsoft also lists physical security keys among passwordless sign-in methods. When deciding what to add, consider whether you have already set it up, can access it now, whether it works offline, and whether Microsoft offers it for your account. A physical security key is an alternative sign-in method, not a fix for a code that is failing to arrive.

Do not share the code or reply to the message. Microsoft says an unexpected code may mean someone entered the wrong contact detail or is trying to access your account. Without the code, that person cannot complete verification.
