Microsoft and Apple face different business risks, so their filings do not support a simple verdict that one stock is safer. Microsoft’s disclosed exposures center on cloud and AI competition, the cost and capacity demands of data centers, regulation, and service resilience. Apple’s center on product demand and launches, outsourced manufacturing and components, trade exposure, and gross margins. Investors comparing MSFT and AAPL should examine how each risk could affect sales, costs, earnings, and expectations—not treat a risk-factor list as a probability ranking.

The comparison below is based on Microsoft’s FY2025 Form 10-K for the year ended June 30, 2025, and Apple’s FY2025 Form 10-K for the year ended September 27, 2025. Microsoft’s investor-relations site lists a later Form 10-K dated July 29, 2026, but its contents are not assessed here; Apple’s FY2025 filing may also have been superseded. The analysis therefore describes those FY2025 filings, not a verified summary of each company’s latest disclosures. Compare the risks on the same business axes

A useful comparison asks what could interrupt demand, raise costs, limit operations, or change the market’s expectations for future earnings. The filings describe risks each company considers relevant; they do not establish how likely or severe each event is, or provide a common probability-weighted ranking of stock risk.

Risk area Microsoft exposure described in its FY2025 filing Apple exposure described in its FY2025 filing Investor question
Demand and competition Intense technology competition, including a rapidly evolving AI market; customer spending decisions can affect results. Product and services demand, competition, product transitions, and launch execution. Could demand or competitive pressure weaken sales, pricing, or expected returns?
Costs and margins Developing and operating AI services and expanding cloud infrastructure can require substantial spending and weigh on operating margins. Foreign exchange, tariffs, pricing pressure, product mix, and demand can affect sales and gross margins. Could costs rise or the revenue mix shift in a way that reduces profitability?
Supply chain and geography Limited suppliers for some devices and data-center components, capacity expansion needs, and exposure to trade restrictions or geopolitical disruption. Outsourcing partners, single- or limited-source components, and manufacturing concentrated in parts of Asia create supply and trade exposure. Could a disruption delay products or services, raise costs, or constrain availability?
Law and regulation Competition-law scrutiny, evolving AI and digital-market rules, privacy and data-transfer duties, trade controls, and cybersecurity regulation. Antitrust investigations and litigation, regulatory changes that may require business-practice changes, and possible effects on product privacy or security perceptions. Could a legal or regulatory change require costly operational or product changes, or affect customer confidence?
Operations and resilience Cloud-service continuity depends on resilient systems and access to land, energy, networking, servers, GPUs, and other components. Manufacturing and assembly depend on a global supply network and external partners. What operational dependency could turn a disruption into lost sales, service interruption, or added expense?

Demand, competition, and execution

Microsoft: cloud and AI adoption must support the investment

Microsoft says technology markets are intensely competitive and identifies AI as a fast-changing, highly competitive area. It expects significant development and operating costs to build and support AI models, services, platforms, and infrastructure. For investors, the key issue is not merely whether AI attracts attention, but whether customer demand and business returns justify the cost of developing and delivering those services. The filing identifies this as an exposure; it does not say that spending will fail to pay off. Microsoft FY2025 Form 10-K

Apple: product cycles make demand and launches central

Apple identifies demand for its products and services, competition, product transitions, and the execution of launches as risks. A product transition or launch that does not meet expectations could affect demand, while competition and pricing pressure can influence sales and margins. These are different channels from Microsoft’s infrastructure-heavy AI and cloud exposure, even though both companies ultimately depend on customers choosing their offerings. Apple FY2025 Form 10-K

Costs, investment, and margin pressure

Microsoft: infrastructure can be both a growth enabler and a cost risk

Expanding data-center capacity depends on land, energy, networking, servers, GPUs, and other components. Developing and running AI services adds further costs. If capacity or operating expenses grow faster than demand or returns, costs could pressure operating margins. Investors can therefore compare Microsoft’s infrastructure requirements with its ability to attract customers and convert use into sustainable revenue, while recognizing that the filing does not quantify this outcome as a probability or forecast.

Apple: several levers can move gross margins

Apple’s filing identifies foreign-exchange movements, tariffs, pricing, product mix, and demand as potential sources of sales or gross-margin volatility. A change in any one factor may affect the economics of products sold; multiple pressures could affect results through different routes. This is a margin sensitivity to compare with Microsoft’s disclosed exposure to investment and operating costs, rather than evidence that one company will necessarily experience greater margin pressure. Supply chains, geography, and disruption

Microsoft: data-center components and capacity

Microsoft describes reliance on limited suppliers for some devices and data-center components, alongside the challenge of expanding data-center capacity. Trade restrictions and geopolitical events could disrupt access or operations. Because cloud services depend on infrastructure being available and resilient, supply constraints or service disruption could affect delivery as well as costs.

Apple: outsourced production and concentrated manufacturing

Apple describes a large global supply chain, substantial reliance on outsourcing partners, some single- or limited-source components, and manufacturing and assembly concentrated in several Asian economies. Trade restrictions or disruption could raise costs, limit component or product availability, require supplier or operating changes, or affect prices. These disclosures make production concentration and component alternatives particularly relevant comparison points for Apple.

Both companies disclose exposure to trade restrictions and geopolitical disruption, but the operational pathways differ: Microsoft emphasizes infrastructure and data-center inputs, while Apple emphasizes outsourced manufacturing, components, and product availability. A disruption could therefore reach each business through different dependencies. Microsoft FY2025 Form 10-K · Apple FY2025 Form 10-K

Legal, regulatory, and cybersecurity exposure

Microsoft: multiple rule sets touch digital services

Microsoft identifies competition-law scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions, emerging AI rules, privacy obligations, data-flow and cross-border transfer restrictions, trade controls, and cybersecurity regulation. It also warns that service resilience and continuity matter as cloud operations expand. These are disclosed areas of potential exposure, not predictions that a particular investigation, rule, or outage will occur.

Apple: antitrust and product or business-practice changes

Apple identifies antitrust investigations and litigation in various jurisdictions, as well as regulatory changes that may require changes to products or business practices. It also notes potential effects on perceptions of product privacy and security. Legal developments could affect operations or customer confidence, but the filing does not establish a particular case outcome or regulatory determination.

For both stocks, compare not just the presence of legal risk but how a possible change could reach costs, product design, service availability, business practices, or customer perceptions. The filings do not provide a like-for-like measure of expected financial impact. Microsoft FY2025 Form 10-K · Apple FY2025 Form 10-K

Trace each risk to earnings and the stock

A practical way to assess a disclosed risk is to map its transmission path rather than count how many risks appear in each filing:

  1. Identify the dependency. Is the risk tied to customer demand, pricing, AI or cloud investment, a component supplier, manufacturing geography, a service system, or a legal requirement?
  2. Follow the operating effect. Could it reduce sales or availability, delay a product or service, require a business change, or increase development, infrastructure, sourcing, or compliance costs?
  3. Connect it to profitability. Consider whether the effect could change revenue, operating expenses, gross margin, or operating margin. Microsoft’s filing highlights infrastructure and AI operating costs; Apple’s highlights several factors affecting sales and gross margins.
  4. Separate company performance from valuation. Apple states that its stock price is subject to volatility. A change in investor expectations can affect a stock even when the underlying business impact is uncertain; neither company’s risk factors alone determine whether its shares are fairly valued.
  5. Check the filing date. Risk factors can change. The FY2025 comparisons here should not be treated as verified summaries of any later filing.

Neither company’s filing provides a shared probability-weighted score that can establish which stock has greater overall risk. A comparison based on disclosures can clarify what to monitor, but it cannot by itself determine which stock is suitable for an individual investor.
