Yes, but it depends on what you mean by “use.” You can edit Office files through Microsoft 365 or Google apps, use selected Adobe products in a browser or through supported apps, and install Steam locally in beta on certain Chromebooks. That does not mean you can install the full Windows or Mac desktop suites on ChromeOS. Check your exact Chromebook model and the features you need before relying on any of these workflows.
What “use” means on a Chromebook
Compatibility is different for each product. For Office, the key question is whether you need to edit Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files or install desktop Office. For Adobe, check the specific product and whether you mean its web, Android, or desktop version. For Steam, distinguish local game installation from cloud gaming.
Before committing to a workflow, identify your Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, whether the device is managed by a school or employer, and any feature or game you depend on.
Can you use Microsoft Office on a Chromebook?
You can open and edit common Office files using documented Chromebook workflows, but this is not the same as installing the Windows or Mac desktop edition of Office. Google’s Office-file instructions describe connecting the Files app to Microsoft OneDrive to work with Microsoft 365 files. OneDrive is required for editing in that workflow.

Use Microsoft 365 with OneDrive
Connect your Chromebook’s Files app to OneDrive, then open the Office file from Files. This is the relevant route if you want to work with Microsoft 365 files while retaining the Microsoft workflow.
Use Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides
You can also open Office documents in Google’s corresponding apps. In this workflow, files are moved to Google Drive and handled with Docs, Sheets, or Slides. Confirm that the file behaves as expected, especially if it relies on complex formatting, macros, or other specialized features.

Know the offline and managed-device limits
Google says Microsoft 365 files and files in Docs, Sheets, and Slides cannot be opened in those apps while offline. A basic editor with limited functionality is available offline. For school- or business-managed Chromebooks, Google documents separate Office-file integration options for Microsoft 365 web integration or Google Workspace; an organization’s administrator may need to configure them. Can you run Adobe apps on a Chromebook?
Some Adobe workflows work on Chromebooks, especially through the web, but “Adobe apps” does not describe one compatibility level. Adobe’s Photoshop on the web requirements include ChromeOS 102 or later, along with browser and hardware requirements. Adobe describes the web version as having a streamlined tool set rather than every desktop Photoshop feature, and work is saved to cloud documents.

Photoshop on the web
Check Adobe’s current technical requirements and the web version’s available features before using it for a workflow that depends on a particular desktop tool. A browser that can open Photoshop on the web does not establish that every Chromebook or every Photoshop feature is supported.
Adobe Express and Lightroom
Adobe announced on October 2, 2023, that Photoshop on the web was coming to new Chromebook Plus devices and Adobe Express was expanding to all Chromebooks. Google’s recommended Chromebook apps page also lists Adobe Express and Lightroom among creative options. Adobe provides Lightroom on the web; check its current web requirements before relying on it, since requirements can change.

These options do not establish native ChromeOS installation of the full Creative Cloud desktop suite, including desktop Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, or Lightroom Classic.
Android apps vary by Chromebook
Some Chromebooks support Android apps, but the Play Store is not available on every model, and school or work administrators can restrict it. Compatibility and behavior can vary by app and device. Check Google’s Android app installation guidance and verify the specific Adobe app on your Chromebook rather than assuming it matches the desktop version.

Does Steam work on a Chromebook?
Steam can install and run games locally through Steam for Chromebook (Beta) on supported devices. Google’s Steam for Chromebook (Beta) requirements and supported-device list are the authority on current eligibility; the list may change as the beta expands.
Check device eligibility, not just minimum specifications
Google lists minimum requirements of an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. Meeting those specifications alone does not guarantee access: the exact Chromebook must also be on Google’s supported-device list.
- Check your exact model against Google’s current supported-device list.
- Open the Launcher and search for “Steam installer.”
- If the installer does not appear, Google says the device does not meet the beta requirements.
Expect beta limitations
Google warns that Steam for Chromebook is still in development and has known bugs, limitations, and performance issues that affect gameplay and which titles are available. Its list of games that performed well is based on testing on Chromebooks meeting the minimum hardware requirements; it is not a guarantee for every game, model, or setting.
Cloud gaming is a different option
Google lists NVIDIA GeForce NOW among recommended Chromebook apps. It is a cloud-gaming option, not local Steam installation, and its availability does not mean every Steam game can be played through the service.

What to check before you buy or depend on a Chromebook
- Name the exact task. “Office,” “Adobe,” and “Steam” each cover different apps, features, and installation methods.
- Check vendor requirements. Use Adobe’s current requirements for web products and Google’s current supported-device list for Steam.
- Test important files or workflows. Try a copy of an essential Office document and confirm any required formatting, collaboration, or offline behavior.
- Check management restrictions. Ask a school or employer administrator whether Play Store, websites, or Office integration features are restricted.
- Do not rely on a label alone. Chromebook Plus branding or generic minimum specifications do not guarantee that a particular app, feature, or game works on a specific model.
