Nextcloud hosting can mean anything from inexpensive shared web hosting with a one-click installer to a dedicated, fully managed business instance. The distinction matters: a cheap plan may leave app compatibility, backups, upgrades, and recovery largely to you.
Key takeaways
- Hetzner Storage Share is the best overall choice for personal users and families seeking managed Nextcloud with German hosting and minimal server administration.
- Nextcloud One includes a dedicated managed instance, hosting in Germany, 24/7 support, and 30 days of backups, making it a stronger business choice than basic shared storage.
- hosting.de lists a free tier, a paid managed plan from €4.90 per month, and a business plan from €19 per month excluding VAT, but each starting price must be compared with its included storage and users.
- manitu lists 100 GB in Webhosting M at €1 per month for six months and €5.99 per month afterward, but the service is web hosting with Nextcloud rather than a premium dedicated Nextcloud platform.
- Keyweb advertises KeyCloud storage tiers from 200 GB to 5 TB and unlimited users, but unlimited users do not remove hardware, storage, or simultaneous-use limits.
- Enterprise providers such as Leviia and DKM Ecosystem are appropriate for migrations, custom integrations, and large deployments—not ordinary personal cloud storage.
Which Nextcloud hosting provider is best?
Hetzner Storage Share is the best overall choice for most personal users because it is designed specifically for managed Nextcloud, offers a simple setup, and uses a German data center. The best provider changes with the workload: businesses may prefer Nextcloud One or IONOS, users wanting more administrative control may prefer Keyweb, and large organizations need an enterprise service such as Leviia or DKM Ecosystem.
The recommendations below are use-case awards rather than a falsely precise numerical ranking. Prices, storage limits, included applications, and contract terms can change, so confirm the live product page before ordering.

1. Hetzner Storage Share: best overall for personal users
Hetzner Storage Share is the strongest default recommendation for individuals, families, and small groups that want managed Nextcloud without administering Linux. Hetzner markets Storage Share as managed Nextcloud hosting with desktop and mobile access, HTTPS, and a provider-managed setup. The provider says the service is hosted in its own data center in Falkenstein, Germany, with RAID-based storage and clustered database infrastructure; see the official Storage Share product information.
Why choose Hetzner
- Setup is substantially simpler than installing Nextcloud on a VPS or home server.
- German hosting is useful for readers who prefer a German data center and European jurisdiction.
- The product is built around Nextcloud rather than being generic WebDAV storage.
- Custom-domain support is available according to Hetzner’s product documentation.
What to check first
Hetzner explicitly says that it cannot support additional apps. That limitation matters if you need full-text search, custom authentication, antivirus scanning, unusual storage connectors, or other applications beyond the provider’s supported configuration. RAID and clustered infrastructure can improve resilience, but RAID is not an independent, restorable backup. Confirm backup retention, restoration procedures, current storage limits, and the practical support level for Nextcloud Office and Talk before migrating.
Verdict: Choose Hetzner for straightforward file synchronization, sharing, calendars, and personal collaboration. Choose a more configurable or business-focused service if unsupported apps, dedicated resources, or formal migration assistance are essential.
2. hosting.de: best Nextcloud specialist for German-speaking users
hosting.de is a strong choice for German-speaking private users and businesses that want a provider focused specifically on Nextcloud. hosting.de identifies itself as an official Nextcloud Gold Partner and lists a free managed option, a paid managed plan from €4.90 per month, and a business plan from €19 per month excluding VAT on its current comparison page. The relevant hosting.de Nextcloud plans should be checked for the exact storage, user quotas, VAT treatment, and renewal price.
Recommended Free Tools
The provider says its managed Nextcloud service is developed and operated in Germany and supports automated hosting operations. hosting.de also offers a separate Managed Nextcloud Business product, making the provider easier to evaluate by use case than a host that presents one generic plan.
Trade-offs
The free and low-cost tiers may not include every business function. A starting price is not a meaningful comparison until you know the included storage, number of users, application restrictions, backup retention, support scope, contract length, and price after any introductory period. English-language documentation and support may also be less extensive than at international providers.
Verdict: hosting.de is one of the best choices when German operation, Nextcloud specialization, and clearly separated personal and business tiers matter more than global reach.
3. Keyweb KeyCloud: best for administrative control and many users
Keyweb KeyCloud suits customers who want a pre-installed Nextcloud instance with more customization than a tightly restricted shared service. Keyweb advertises storage plans from 200 GB through 5 TB, unlimited users, German hosting in a TÜV-certified data center, and customer customization through administrator access or Keyweb support. The 200 GB plan is listed at €8 per month on the KeyCloud product page.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Keyweb’s unlimited-user positioning can be attractive to households, clubs, and organizations with many accounts but moderate storage requirements. “Unlimited users” does not mean unlimited performance: CPU, RAM, storage throughput, quotas, Talk traffic, and concurrent connections still determine the usable capacity. The dossier specifically flags a simultaneous-participant limit on the entry plan, so ask for the current Talk and collaboration limits rather than treating unlimited users as unlimited meetings.
Questions to ask Keyweb
- Which maintenance tasks are included automatically?
- Can administrators install third-party apps and run
occcommands? - Are custom integrations supported by the provider?
- What backup retention and restoration service is included?
- What resource or concurrent-user limits apply to the selected tier?
Verdict: Keyweb is a good middle ground for users who want managed infrastructure but do not want a completely locked-down Nextcloud instance.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

4. manitu: best low-cost option when you also need web hosting
manitu is the budget pick for customers who want Nextcloud alongside a website, email, domains, databases, or conventional web hosting. manitu’s current plan page lists one-click Nextcloud installation, 100 GB in Webhosting M, and a promotional price of €1 per month for six months followed by €5.99 per month. Larger listed plans provide 200 GB, 300 GB, and 500 GB. The manitu Nextcloud hosting page also recommends Nextcloud from Webhosting M upward because of its growing RAM requirements.
The important qualification is that manitu presents Nextcloud through web-hosting packages. A web-hosting environment with a Nextcloud installer is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated, fully managed Nextcloud instance. Shared resource limits can affect preview generation, search, large libraries, Talk, and Office. Confirm who applies Nextcloud upgrades, which apps are permitted, how backups are restored, and whether the advertised storage includes database, previews, versions, and trash.
Verdict: manitu offers compelling normal pricing for a small personal installation, especially when other web-hosting features are useful. It is not the first choice for high-performance collaboration or a large business team.
5. IONOS Managed Nextcloud: best established-host option for SMBs
IONOS Managed Nextcloud is a sensible business option for organizations that value an established hosting company, German data centers, and European infrastructure. IONOS identifies itself as a Nextcloud Platinum Partner, and its German product page says data for the managed product is stored exclusively in German data centers while emphasizing GDPR-compliant storage and German data-protection requirements. See the IONOS Managed Nextcloud product page.
IONOS also offers Nextcloud Workspace, a broader managed collaboration and productivity service. IONOS documentation describes Nextcloud Workspace as a fully managed sovereign collaboration suite hosted in IONOS Cloud data centers in Europe, with storage, document editing, communication, and private-AI-related features; the IONOS Workspace documentation describes that broader offering.
Why product selection matters
Managed Nextcloud, Nextcloud Workspace, and general IONOS Cloud infrastructure are different products. App availability, storage, users, Office and Talk support, administration rights, and data location can vary by edition and market. The UK and German offerings may also differ. Compare the exact checkout product rather than buying on the strength of the generic “IONOS Nextcloud” label.
Verdict: IONOS is a strong SMB candidate when business support and established infrastructure matter, but self-managed users should look at a VPS or cloud-server product instead—and accept the maintenance responsibility.
6. Nextcloud One: best fully managed business deployment
Nextcloud One is the clearest choice for organizations that want a vendor-backed, dedicated managed Nextcloud experience rather than the lowest consumer price. Nextcloud describes Nextcloud One as a fully managed service hosted in Germany with hosting, maintenance, management of a dedicated Nextcloud instance, 24/7 support, 30 days of backups, and GDPR compliance. Those claims appear on the official Nextcloud pricing page.
A dedicated instance is a meaningful distinction from shared storage: the organization can expect a more business-oriented operating model and clearer responsibility for maintenance. Nextcloud One may still be excessive for one person or a family that only needs file synchronization. Public pricing may also be less transparent than consumer-oriented plans, so verify eligibility, included storage, user counts, apps, migration services, and contract terms before requesting an order.
Verdict: Choose Nextcloud One when support, backups, and a dedicated instance justify paying more than a basic managed storage plan.

7. NL Hosting: best Dutch data-residency option
NL Hosting is worth considering for Dutch users and small businesses that want Nextcloud alongside hosting, email, and domain services in the Netherlands. Nextcloud’s provider directory describes NL Hosting as a Dutch web-hosting provider whose data centers are in the Netherlands and whose services are self-manageable through its customer panel; the Nextcloud provider directory is the cited source.
The public directory description does not establish current storage, backup retention, support response times, pricing, exact Nextcloud version, or app permissions. “Self-manageable” may also indicate more customer responsibility than a fully managed service. Before ordering, determine whether the product is shared hosting, a managed instance, or a VPS-based deployment, and request the provider’s current backup and export policy.
Verdict: NL Hosting is a useful regional shortlist candidate, but it should not outrank providers with more transparent specifications unless the active commercial product supplies those details.
8. Leviia: best for large-scale enterprise and government deployments
Leviia is the enterprise choice for organizations planning very large Nextcloud deployments, government projects, or complex migrations. Nextcloud describes Leviia as a France-based provider serving businesses and government agencies, with deployments from terabytes to petabytes and from thousands to hundreds of thousands of users. The directory also describes services such as SSO, antivirus, web-application firewalls, and custom development; these capabilities are summarized in the Nextcloud provider directory.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Enterprise scale does not make Leviia better value for a family or freelancer. Leviia is more relevant when an organization needs architecture design, professional services, custom security controls, migration planning, or contractual support. Confirm the service geography, legal entity, certifications, backup architecture, recovery objectives, support languages, and service-level commitments in the proposal. Leviia’s vendor website is the appropriate starting point for a quote.
Verdict: Leviia belongs in an enterprise shortlist, not in a consumer price comparison.
9. DKM Ecosystem: best for multinational and regional enterprise projects
DKM Ecosystem is the best fit among these options for multinational organizations that need regional deployments, managed Nextcloud-as-a-Service, or custom migration and integration work. Nextcloud describes DKM as a Gold Service Provider Partner with local data centers in Singapore, China, the UAE, Japan, and Mexico. The described services include managed shared and dedicated deployments, consulting, custom integrations, app development, training, and migration from Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace; see the Nextcloud provider directory and DKM Ecosystem’s vendor website.
DKM is not a practical substitute for a transparent personal storage plan. The relevant buying process is a requirements-led enterprise quote covering regions, identity integration, data transfer, support languages, availability, backups, compliance, and exit procedures.
German sovereign-enterprise alternative: Organizations focused specifically on German regulated industries or public-sector requirements should also evaluate toplink. Nextcloud describes toplink as offering sovereign collaboration, consulting, migration, integration, managed Nextcloud environments, high availability, compliance support, and enterprise services; its official website provides the commercial starting point.
What does Nextcloud hosting actually include?
Nextcloud hosting may include server management, Nextcloud maintenance, backups, monitoring, and support—or only server space and an installer. Read the operating model before comparing prices.

Managed Nextcloud
A managed provider typically handles server provisioning, the Nextcloud installation, operating-system maintenance, security updates, routine Nextcloud upgrades, database and web-server configuration, monitoring, and basic support. Backups may be included, but never assume that they are: confirm frequency, retention, geographic separation, encryption, and restoration.
The customer usually still manages user accounts, sharing policies, app choices, data-retention rules, external storage, encryption keys, and upgrade testing. Managed hosting reduces infrastructure work; managed hosting does not remove responsibility for permissions and data governance.
Shared Nextcloud hosting
Shared Nextcloud hosting places multiple customers on common infrastructure. Shared hosting can be inexpensive and easy to start, but it may restrict app installation, administrative controls, CPU and memory usage, Talk, Office, full-text search, and large libraries. Provider-controlled upgrades can improve stability while reducing your control over timing.
Dedicated managed instances
A dedicated managed instance is allocated to one customer or organization. Dedicated instances are more appropriate for business-critical use, larger user counts, SSO or LDAP, custom integrations, predictable performance, dedicated support, and formal migration work. Nextcloud One is the clearest example in this comparison.
VPS and cloud-server hosting
A VPS supplies server capacity, not necessarily a managed Nextcloud service. The customer may need to install and maintain Linux, PHP, the database, HTTPS, reverse proxies, cron jobs, Redis or another cache, security hardening, backups, monitoring, upgrades, and rollback procedures. A “Nextcloud-ready VPS” is therefore not plug-and-play managed hosting.
How should you compare Nextcloud hosts?
Compare management, usable storage, limits, backups, applications, data jurisdiction, support, migration, and portability—not headline price alone. A sensible evaluation gives the greatest weight to operational reliability and privacy, followed by features, price, support, and the ability to leave.

| Criterion | Questions to ask | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Management | Is the service fully managed, partially managed, shared, dedicated, or self-managed? | Defines who fixes updates, databases, security, and failures. |
| Usable storage | How much storage remains after files, versions, previews, and trash? | Marketing capacity is not always the same as available working space. |
| User model | Is storage pooled, per-user, or plan-based? What does “unlimited” exclude? | Many users can still exceed CPU, RAM, quota, or concurrency limits. |
| Backups | How often, how long retained, where stored, and how restored? | RAID, replication, and high availability are not independent backups. |
| Applications | Can you install apps? Are Office, Talk, TURN, search, OCR, and external storage supported? | App restrictions can make an apparently suitable plan unusable. |
| Data jurisdiction | Where are servers and backups located, where is the legal entity, and where are subcontractors? | Physical location and legal exposure are separate privacy questions. |
| Support | What hours, channels, response commitments, and Nextcloud expertise are included? | Generic hosting support may not troubleshoot Nextcloud applications. |
| Portability | Can you export files, the database, configuration, and a complete restorable backup? | Exit options reduce the risk of provider failure or an unusable migration. |
| Contract | What are VAT, setup fees, minimum term, renewal price, cancellation notice, and downgrade rules? | Starting prices can conceal the actual long-term cost. |
Managed or self-managed Nextcloud: which is better?
Managed Nextcloud is better when reliability and reduced maintenance matter more than unrestricted control; self-managed Nextcloud is better when you already operate Linux infrastructure and need complete configuration freedom.
| Choose managed hosting when… | Choose self-managed hosting when… |
|---|---|
| You do not administer Linux servers. | You already manage Linux, databases, HTTPS, backups, and monitoring. |
| Desktop and mobile synchronization must work without routine server maintenance. | You need unrestricted app installation and configuration access. |
| Professional support and provider-managed updates justify the price. | You need custom reverse proxies, external storage, hardware acceleration, or unusual integrations. |
| Your business cannot tolerate an unpatched or poorly monitored instance. | You need to control upgrade timing, encryption keys, and the complete operating environment. |
Self-hosting at home can provide maximum control but adds internet connectivity, power, hardware failure, off-site backup, patching, and remote-access responsibilities. A self-managed VPS removes some hardware work but does not remove system administration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you verify about storage, backups, and apps?
Storage capacity
Compare total included storage, pooled versus per-user quotas, maximum instance size, expansion prices, external object-storage support, and whether storage can be reduced after a downgrade. Versions, trash, previews, and database overhead can consume capacity, so leave headroom instead of filling a plan to its advertised maximum.
Backups and recovery
Ask whether backups include both the files and database, whether backups are consistent, how long they are retained, whether they are geographically separate, whether they are encrypted, whether restoration costs extra, and whether you can download an independent copy. Keep an independent backup of irreplaceable data even when the host advertises redundancy.

Application restrictions
Ask specifically about Nextcloud Office, Collabora, OnlyOffice, Talk, TURN or STUN, antivirus, full-text search, OCR, workflow automation, federated sharing, custom branding, external storage connectors, and administrator access to occ. File synchronization does not automatically provide a complete Microsoft 365 replacement.
Office editing may require a separate Collabora or OnlyOffice service. Large Talk meetings may require TURN infrastructure and sufficient bandwidth. A provider that supports the Nextcloud core may still prohibit or decline support for third-party apps; Hetzner’s additional-app limitation demonstrates why the app policy must be checked before purchase.
Is European or German Nextcloud hosting automatically more private?
No. European server location is useful for data-residency planning, but it does not by itself prove that a provider cannot access files or that an organization meets every compliance requirement. Separate the server location, backup location, provider’s legal domicile, subcontractor locations, support access, encryption model, retention policy, and legal-access obligations.
“GDPR-compliant” should be treated as a provider’s stated compliance position or contractual claim, not as a complete independent security certification. Ask for the data-processing agreement, subprocessor list, technical and organizational measures, breach process, deletion policy, and documented export procedure when the data is sensitive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How can you avoid migration and provider-continuity problems?
Choose a host that explains how to export your data and keep an independent backup before migration. Nextcloud community guidance warns that a provider may be able to install Nextcloud without having the operational expertise to run it reliably; the community cites the ownCube shutdown as an example of why continuity and portability matter. The warning is documented in this Nextcloud community discussion.
- Ask whether you can download all files, the database, configuration, and encryption material where applicable.
- Confirm whether another provider can restore the supplied backup.
- Check the required notice period and whether migration assistance is available.
- Read the provider’s shutdown, cancellation, and data-deletion terms.
- Maintain an independent backup before, during, and after migration.
Migration checklist: what to test before signing up
- Count users, devices, shared folders, public links, and external collaborators.
- Estimate current data plus versions, trash, previews, and future growth.
- List every required app and ask the provider for a supported-app list.
- Confirm whether Office means Collabora, OnlyOffice, or only document compatibility.
- Confirm Talk participant limits, TURN support, recording, and bandwidth.
- Verify backup frequency, retention, geographic separation, and restoration cost.
- Confirm the data-center country, legal entity, subprocessors, and support geography.
- Request a trial or test account where available.
- Test uploads, downloads, desktop sync, mobile sync, sharing, search, previews, and recovery.
- Check the normal recurring price, VAT, promotional period, renewal price, setup fee, and cancellation terms.
- Export a sample folder before committing important data.
Which alternatives should you consider?
Consider self-hosting, a self-managed VPS, or a different privacy-focused file-sync service when managed Nextcloud does not match your requirements.
- Home self-hosting: Maximum control, but you must manage hardware, connectivity, power, patching, remote access, and off-site backups.
- Self-managed VPS: More flexibility than shared hosting, but you remain responsible for Linux, PHP, databases, HTTPS, caching, security, monitoring, and recovery.
- General cloud infrastructure: Services such as Hetzner Cloud or IONOS Cloud can host a custom deployment, but raw infrastructure is not managed Nextcloud.
- Other file-sync products: A simpler privacy-focused product may be better when you only need file synchronization and do not need Nextcloud’s calendar, contacts, Talk, Office, or app ecosystem.
- Managed productivity suites: A bundled service may be preferable when email, document editing, meetings, storage, and administration must come from one business platform.
Do not compare a raw VPS with a managed Nextcloud plan without pricing your own time, backup storage, monitoring, security work, and failure recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nextcloud hosting better than Dropbox?
Nextcloud hosting is better than Dropbox when control over the software, provider, data location, and app ecosystem matters more than the convenience of a single turnkey service. Nextcloud hosting varies widely, so compare backups, Office and Talk support, app permissions, and migration options rather than comparing storage alone.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I install any Nextcloud app on a hosted instance?
No. App installation depends on the host and plan, and some providers restrict third-party applications or decline to support them. Hetzner, for example, explicitly states that additional apps are outside its support scope, so request a supported-app list before signing up.
Does managed Nextcloud hosting always include backups?
No. Managed Nextcloud hosting does not automatically include a usable independent backup. Ask about backup frequency, retention, geographic separation, database consistency, encryption, restoration procedures, restoration fees, and whether you can download your own copy.
Is Nextcloud Office included with Nextcloud hosting?
No. Nextcloud file hosting does not automatically include hosted Collabora or OnlyOffice. Confirm whether Office editing is included, which editor is used, how many simultaneous users are supported, and whether a separate service or fee applies.
Can I move my Nextcloud instance to another provider later?
You can move a Nextcloud instance more safely when the provider offers complete file and database exports or a restorable backup. Confirm export formats, notice periods, migration assistance, and data-deletion terms before storing irreplaceable data.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Hetzner Storage Share for simple personal Nextcloud hosting, hosting.de for a German Nextcloud specialist, Keyweb for more administrative control, manitu for low-cost web hosting with Nextcloud, IONOS for established SMB infrastructure, and Nextcloud One for a dedicated managed business deployment. Choose NL Hosting for a Dutch regional option, Leviia for large French enterprise deployments, or DKM Ecosystem for multinational projects. Before paying, verify app access, backups, usable storage, data jurisdiction, support, full cost, and the ability to export your data.
