There is no universally best e-commerce website builder. For most businesses whose primary job is selling online, Shopify is the safest default. Choose Wix when design flexibility matters as much as commerce, BigCommerce for complex catalogs and B2B, WooCommerce for WordPress ownership and customization, Squarespace for design-led brands, Square Online for businesses already using Square in person, Ecwid for adding a store to an existing website, Hostinger for a low-cost first store, and GoDaddy for the quickest simple launch.

Last verified: August 10, 2026. Prices are US examples unless stated otherwise. Promotional offers, taxes, payment rates, plan names, feature availability, and payment-provider support can vary by country, billing term, account, and rollout status. Treat the prices below as a current buying guide, then confirm the checkout price and payment terms before subscribing.

Quick comparison

This is an editorial ranking, not a market-share ranking. It weighs commerce depth, total cost, ease of operation, growth potential, omnichannel selling, customization, marketing, and the amount of technical responsibility transferred to the merchant.

Rank Platform Best for First useful commerce plan or setup Payment and platform-fee note Main drawback
1 Shopify Dedicated online stores and omnichannel brands Basic: $29/month billed annually or $39 monthly Shopify Payments rates shown from 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic; third-party fees may apply Apps and themes can make the real cost much higher
2 Wix Small businesses that prioritize design flexibility Core: $29/month on the listed US annual pricing; $36 monthly Payment-processing charges still apply; rates vary by market and method Less suited to highly complex operations and B2B
3 BigCommerce Growing catalogs, B2B, international, and multi-store operations Core: $29/month annually or $39 monthly, subject to GMV rules From June 1, 2026, eligible external providers can trigger an additional 2%, 1%, or 0.6% fee by plan New GMV thresholds and provider fees complicate cost planning
4 WooCommerce WordPress users who need ownership and customization Free core software; WooCommerce estimates hosting of about $25–$350/month No WooCommerce revenue share; processor, hosting, extensions, and maintenance are extra You manage hosting, updates, security, backups, and plugin compatibility
5 Squarespace Design-led, content-rich brands with modest catalogs Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced rollout; verify the live US plan shown to you 2% online-store fee on Basic and 0% on Core, Plus, and Advanced; digital-content fees differ Less operational depth than Shopify or BigCommerce
6 Square Online Retailers and restaurants already using Square POS Free: $0/month/location; Plus $49; Premium $149 Online card rate shown as 3.3% + $0.30 on Free and 2.9% + $0.30 on paid plans Less storefront and international customization than leading commerce platforms
7 Ecwid by Lightspeed Adding commerce to an existing website Starter up to 10 products; Venture up to 100; Business up to 2,500; Unlimited is unlimited No Ecwid setup or transaction fee on the listed plans; payment processing still applies Best as an embedded store, not always as a highly customized primary website
8 Hostinger Budget-conscious beginners and small catalogs Ecommerce Starter displayed at $2.99/month on a 12-month offer; Growth $7.99; Scale $19.99 Hostinger advertises 0% Hostinger transaction fees; promotional and renewal terms matter Smaller ecosystem and less operational depth than mature platforms
9 GoDaddy Websites + Marketing The fastest low-complexity launch Verify current US plan and promotional price on GoDaddy’s live pricing page Payment and commerce terms depend on the current Commerce experience and account setup Limited design depth, product options, and advanced e-commerce tools

Price note: A platform’s subscription is only one part of the cost. Payment processing, platform transaction fees, apps, extensions, hosting, domains, email, shipping tools, and maintenance can change the ranking substantially.

Easily slip it into your backpack or briefcase, making it the ultimate portable office accessory for business trips, cafes, or hybrid work setups.

What type of e-commerce platform are you choosing?

The nine products are not identical categories of software:

  • Hosted commerce platforms: Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Square Online, GoDaddy, and Hostinger provide hosting, security infrastructure, and software updates as part of the service. You give up some server-level control in exchange for a simpler operating model.
  • Open-source commerce software: WooCommerce is a free, open-source WordPress extension. The software is yours to configure, but you must select and pay for hosting, payment providers, themes, plugins, backups, security, and maintenance.
  • Embedded commerce: Ecwid can be inserted into an existing WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, blog, or other website. It also offers an Instant Site for merchants without a site. Its main advantage is adding commerce without rebuilding the whole web presence.

That distinction explains why a supposedly free product can cost more to operate than a hosted subscription, and why the best website builder for a portfolio may not be the best platform for inventory, fulfillment, or B2B purchasing.

How this ranking was determined

The ranking uses a transparent editorial framework rather than claiming that one platform wins every test:

Criterion Weight What was considered
Commerce capability 20% Catalogs, variants, checkout, orders, refunds, inventory, shipping, and fulfillment
Total cost 15% Subscription, payment fees, platform fees, apps, hosting, themes, domains, and maintenance
Ease of launch and operation 15% Product entry, design setup, order management, mobile administration, and support
Growth and scalability 15% Catalog and GMV limits, staff accounts, APIs, automation, locations, and storefronts
Omnichannel selling 10% POS, social channels, marketplaces, subscriptions, pickup, and local delivery
Customization and ownership 10% Theme control, custom code, APIs, data export, and migration options
Marketing and SEO 5% SEO controls, blogging, email, abandoned-cart features, analytics, and product feeds
Security and reliability 5% Hosted infrastructure, SSL/TLS, PCI responsibilities, backups, and update burden

These weights reflect the likely needs of a solo entrepreneur, creator, retailer, local business, startup, or small-to-mid-sized brand. A company with a large B2B sales team or a WordPress development team should use different weights.

1. Shopify — best overall for a dedicated online store

Best for

Shopify is the strongest default for a business whose website exists primarily to sell products. It is especially suitable for direct-to-consumer brands, repeat-purchase businesses, sellers using social networks and marketplaces, and merchants that expect to add staff, agencies, apps, or developers over time.

Current US price

Shopify’s US pricing page lists:

  • Basic: $29/month when billed annually, or $39/month when billed monthly.
  • Grow: $79/month annually, or $105 monthly.
  • Advanced: $299/month annually, or $399 monthly.
  • Plus: from $2,300/month.

Shopify is currently advertising a three-day free trial followed by $1/month for three months. That is a dated promotion, not a permanent price, so verify its terms before relying on it. The plans include hosted infrastructure, unlimited bandwidth, SSL/TLS, a free myshopify.com address, the option to connect an existing domain, and unlimited products on the core plans. See the official Shopify pricing page for the current plan inclusions.

The same page shows Shopify Payments card rates beginning at approximately 2.9% + $0.30 for Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 for Grow, and 2.5% + $0.30 for Advanced. These are US examples, not universal rates. If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify may charge an additional third-party transaction fee.

What Shopify does well

  • Commerce is the center of the product, so catalog, checkout, order, inventory, shipping, analytics, and sales-channel workflows are more developed than those of many general-purpose site builders.
  • It supports online and in-person selling, social and marketplace channels, shipping integrations, and a broad app ecosystem.
  • It is a practical platform for subscriptions and repeat purchasing, although the exact subscription workflow may require a compatible app, payment setup, or plan.
  • Hosted infrastructure removes the need to patch WordPress, configure a server, or maintain a separate security stack.
  • It is easier to find Shopify-focused developers, agencies, themes, and integrations than specialists for many smaller platforms.

Limitations

  • The subscription is only the starting cost. Premium themes, email, reviews, subscriptions, search, loyalty, shipping, international selling, and other apps can create a significant monthly bill.
  • Payment-provider availability and Shopify Payments eligibility depend on the merchant’s country and business type.
  • WordPress offers more flexible publishing and content architecture for a content-heavy site.
  • Shopify Starter is primarily a lightweight selling option for links and social conversations, not a like-for-like replacement for a full standalone store. Compare the full Basic plan when evaluating website builders.

Who should not choose Shopify?

Do not make it the default if you already have a well-developed WordPress site, need complex native B2B account structures, operate a Square-centered physical retail business, or want a design-and-content site where products are secondary.

Editorial verdict

Shopify is the safest general-purpose choice for a serious new online store. Its ecosystem and commerce focus reduce operational risk, but budget for apps and confirm payment fees before committing.

2. Wix — best for design flexibility and small-business ecommerce

Best for

Wix is a strong choice for a small business that wants its storefront, service pages, landing pages, blog, portfolio, bookings, or local-business content to feel like one visually controlled website. It fits fashion, food, beauty, creative, and service businesses with small-to-medium catalogs particularly well.

Current US price

Wix’s listed US annual pricing includes:

  • Core: $29/month when using the listed annual billing option.
  • Business: approximately $39/month annually.
  • Business Elite: $159/month annually.

The listed monthly prices are higher: $36 for Core, $46 for Business, and $172 for Business Elite. Wix pricing varies by geography and can change, so confirm the offer on the Wix plans page. A paid commerce plan does not eliminate the card-processing charge from Wix Payments or another gateway.

What Wix does well

  • Visual editing is more approachable than that of many commerce-first platforms, and the merchant can adjust pages and layouts without treating the entire site as a catalog template.
  • Wix’s commerce feature set includes product variants, inventory, subscriptions, social selling, SEO controls, shipping, abandoned-cart recovery, digital products, and in-person selling.
  • Wix says its stores can support up to 50,000 products, multiple variants, digital goods, and more than 80 payment gateways. Availability varies by market; a gateway count is not a promise that every gateway is available to every merchant.
  • AI-assisted setup can provide a starting point while the owner retains manual drag-and-drop control.

Limitations

  • Design freedom can produce inconsistent layouts if the owner does not maintain a coherent system for product pages, navigation, typography, and mobile layouts.
  • Complex B2B pricing, sophisticated fulfillment, large operational teams, and advanced international catalogs may fit BigCommerce or Shopify better.
  • Payment-processing rates, supported methods, payouts, and tax features vary by country and payment method.

Who should not choose Wix?

Choose another platform if inventory, B2B workflows, multiple storefronts, ERP integration, or highly specialized fulfillment is the primary problem. Wix can sell products, but that does not make it equivalent to a commerce platform designed around complex operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Editorial verdict

Wix is the best design-first generalist in this list. It is especially compelling when selling products is important but not the only reason customers visit the website.

3. BigCommerce — best for complex catalogs, B2B, and multi-store operations

Best for

BigCommerce deserves serious consideration from wholesalers, manufacturers, distributors, larger catalogs, multi-brand companies, and businesses that need B2B purchasing, multiple storefronts, regional catalogs, or more commerce functionality built in rather than assembled from apps.

Current US price and the June 2026 changes

BigCommerce changed its self-serve plan structure on June 1, 2026. Older articles that quote Standard, Plus, and Pro without discussing the current structure are out of date. The current published prices are:

  • Core: $29/month billed annually or $39 monthly, with up to $30,000 of trailing-12-month Inclusive GMV.
  • Growth: $79/month annually or $105 monthly, with up to $100,000 of trailing-12-month Inclusive GMV.
  • Scale: $299/month annually or $399 monthly, with a $33,333 monthly GMV cap before a 0.9% overage rate.
  • Performance: custom pricing beginning at $1,499/month billed annually.

BigCommerce defines Inclusive GMV in a way that applies a 10% reduction to gross order value for threshold calculations. Core and Growth can automatically upgrade when their applicable threshold is exceeded. The company’s 2026 pricing update explains the transition, timing, and treatment of plan changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Beginning June 1, self-serve plans also charge an Open Payment Provider Fee on eligible orders processed by a provider that is not on BigCommerce’s Embedded Payment Provider list: 2% on Core, 1% on Growth, and 0.6% on Scale. Orders processed through listed Embedded Payment Providers do not incur that additional BigCommerce fee. The provider list may change, so payment compatibility is now a financial decision, not merely a technical one.

  • Stable And Protective: This laptop stand is made of premium Aluminum alloy, it is sturdy, support up to 8.8 lbs(4kg), no worry any wobble at all; the rubber on the holder hands sticks tightly, ensure your laptop stable on the stand and prevent any scratches.
  • Keep Laptop Cool: the open aluminum design provides good ventilation and airflow to prevent your laptop from overheating. It folds flat if you need to store it, create extra space on your desk and keep your desk clean and organized.
  • Easy to Use: thanks to the detachable design, you could assemble it very easily it 3 steps.

What BigCommerce does well

  • Its built-in catalog, customer-group, pricing, API, and merchandising capabilities can reduce reliance on paid apps.
  • Its B2B materials describe customer groups, price lists, buyer portals, quotes, account hierarchies, shared carts, and reordering workflows.
  • Multi-storefront functionality supports multiple brands, regions, or business units from a more centralized operation.
  • It is well suited to businesses that need multiple currencies, real-time shipping quotes, open APIs, and integrations with ERP or other back-office systems.

See the BigCommerce B2B overview and multi-storefront documentation for the current scope.

Limitations

  • The new GMV rules make it possible for a growing store to move plans even when its feature needs have not changed.
  • Using an external payment provider can add a platform fee on top of the provider’s own processing fee. Model this before migrating.
  • The interface and implementation may feel more complex than Wix or Squarespace.
  • ERP, feed management, custom integrations, and agency or developer work can make implementation expensive despite a familiar advertised subscription.

Who should not choose BigCommerce?

A small seller with a handful of products and no B2B, multi-store, or catalog complexity may pay for capabilities it will never use. Also reconsider it if your preferred payment provider is not embedded and the added fee makes the economics unattractive.

Editorial verdict

BigCommerce is the strongest Shopify alternative for complex commerce. Its B2B and multi-store capabilities are meaningful advantages, but the post-June-2026 GMV and payment-provider rules must be included in any serious cost model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. WooCommerce — best for WordPress ownership and customization

Best for

WooCommerce is the natural candidate for an existing WordPress publisher, educator, membership business, or content-heavy brand that wants to own its hosting relationship and customize product types, checkout logic, memberships, or integrations.

Current cost

WooCommerce’s core software has no monthly subscription and no WooCommerce revenue share. That does not make the store free. WooCommerce’s own pricing guide estimates hosting for most stores at approximately $25–$350 per month, depending on traffic and performance. Extensions are commonly about $29–$299 per year per extension. WooPayments is shown at approximately 2.5%–2.9% + $0.30 per transaction depending on the circumstances. Third-party payment providers can be used without a WooCommerce platform surcharge, although they still charge their own rates. See the WooCommerce pricing guide.

What WooCommerce does well

  • You control the WordPress installation, database, theme, hosting provider, and much of the customer experience.
  • The extension ecosystem supports unusual product models, memberships, courses, subscriptions, bookings, marketplaces, and custom integrations.
  • WordPress is generally stronger than hosted builders for publishing workflows, editorial SEO, long-form content, and complex content relationships.
  • There is no WooCommerce platform fee that rises simply because sales rise, although hosting and operational costs may rise.

Limitations

  • You are responsible for choosing reliable hosting, installing updates, maintaining backups, monitoring uptime, protecting against malware, optimizing images and caching, and resolving plugin conflicts.
  • Every additional extension introduces another renewal, update schedule, compatibility question, and possible performance issue.
  • Costs are harder to predict than a hosted platform because the required stack depends on your theme, gateway, shipping, tax, subscriptions, search, email, and marketing needs.
  • Security and PCI responsibilities require more attention than many beginners expect.

Who should not choose WooCommerce?

A nontechnical owner with no WordPress specialist should be cautious. Paying a developer or managed WordPress host can make WooCommerce workable, but that erodes the apparent savings of the free core.

Editorial verdict

WooCommerce is the best ownership-and-customization choice, not automatically the cheapest or easiest choice. It is particularly sensible when WordPress already powers the website and content is central to acquisition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Squarespace — best for design-led and content-rich stores

Best for

Squarespace fits artists, photographers, designers, restaurants, boutiques, lifestyle brands, and other businesses where visual presentation, editorial storytelling, portfolios, services, courses, or memberships are nearly as important as the product catalog.

Current US pricing and fees

Squarespace is rolling out four current plans—Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced—that replace or coexist with older Personal, Business, Commerce Basic, and Commerce Advanced plans. The rollout can vary by account and location, and existing customers may still see legacy plans. Verify the exact subscription displayed in your account or on the current Squarespace pricing page rather than relying on an older comparison.

The current fee schedule is more useful than comparing only the plan names:

  • Online-store transaction fees are 2% on Basic and 0% on Core, Plus, and Advanced.
  • Digital-content and membership transaction fees are listed as 7% on Basic, 5% on Core, 1% on Plus, and 0% on Advanced.
  • For US Squarespace Payments, card rates are listed as 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic and Core, 2.7% + $0.30 on Plus, and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced.
  • Under the listed US rates, international cards add 1.5% and currency conversion adds 1%.

These are separate categories: a plan that is acceptable for physical products may be expensive for digital content or memberships. The Squarespace fee documentation provides the current breakdown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Squarespace does well

  • Templates and editing tools make it easier to present a polished brand without assembling a large theme and app stack.
  • Commerce can sit alongside portfolios, blog posts, photography, bookings, services, courses, and memberships.
  • It is a strong fit for a small-to-medium catalog where merchandising is straightforward and the site’s visual identity drives trust.

Limitations

  • Advanced inventory, B2B, marketplace, multi-store, and operational workflows are generally less deep than on Shopify or BigCommerce.
  • Digital-product and membership fees require careful plan selection.
  • The plan migration makes old comparison articles especially unreliable.

Editorial verdict

Squarespace is the best design-first option when the product catalog is relatively straightforward. Select the plan based on what you sell and your transaction volume, not simply the lowest monthly subscription.

6. Square Online — best for businesses already using Square in person

Best for

Square Online is most compelling for a retailer, restaurant, salon, market seller, or local business already using Square readers, Square Register, appointments, or another Square point-of-sale product. It can keep online and offline products, inventory, payments, discounts, gift cards, customer records, and reporting within one ecosystem.

Current US price

Square’s current unified US plans list:

  • Square Free: $0 per month per location.
  • Square Plus: $49 per month per location.
  • Square Premium: $149 per month per location.

The current online card-processing examples are 3.3% + $0.30 on Free and 2.9% + $0.30 on paid plans. Review the Square Online plans and unified pricing announcement for current inclusions and conditions.

What Square Online does well

  • Online and in-person inventory can be coordinated instead of maintained in separate systems.
  • Pickup, local delivery, shipping, product reviews, abandoned-cart emails, subscriptions, bundles, scheduled product updates, and social selling are available in the Square ecosystem, with feature availability depending on plan.
  • A business already taking Square payments avoids introducing a second primary payment and customer-data system.

Limitations

  • The site builder is less flexible than Wix, Squarespace, or Shopify.
  • Square is less appropriate for advanced international commerce, complex B2B, or a heavily customized storefront.
  • Per-location pricing matters if the business operates multiple shops.
  • Its processing economics should be modeled at higher online volume rather than judged only by the free subscription.

Editorial verdict

Square Online is the obvious choice for an existing Square merchant. It is less compelling for a purely online company that has no need for Square’s point-of-sale ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Ecwid by Lightspeed — best for adding a store to an existing website

Best for

Ecwid is designed for the business that already has a website, blog, nonprofit site, restaurant site, or social presence and wants to add a catalog and checkout without rebuilding the main site.

Current plan structure

Ecwid’s current plans are organized by catalog size:

  • Venture: up to 100 products.
  • Business: up to 2,500 products.
  • Unlimited: unlimited products.

The Ecwid pricing page is dynamic and can display different prices based on billing cycle, location, and account context. Capture the live US price at the time of purchase rather than copying an old comparison figure. Ecwid states that its plans have no setup or transaction fee and that the service supports more than 70 payment providers, unlimited bandwidth, and unlimited storage. Payment providers still charge their own processing fees.

What Ecwid does well

  • Commerce can be embedded into WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, blogs, and other existing sites.
  • The same catalog can be used across more than one site or sales channel, subject to the plan and feature requirements.
  • An Instant Site provides a simpler standalone option for someone without a current website.
  • Subscriptions, abandoned-cart recovery, staff accounts, marketplace selling, multilingual catalogs, and POS integrations are available according to plan and region.

Limitations

  • No Ecwid transaction fee does not mean no payment-processing cost.
  • Deep content and storefront customization may still depend on the platform hosting the embedded store.
  • Features are tiered, so a low product count does not necessarily mean that the lowest plan includes every required marketing or operational tool.

Editorial verdict

Ecwid is the best add-on store. Do not compare it as though it were identical to Shopify’s full-site commerce model; its value is avoiding a complete website rebuild.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Hostinger Website Builder and Hostinger Ecommerce — best budget choice

Best for

Hostinger is aimed at beginners and small businesses that want a low initial price, AI-assisted setup, templates, payment support, and a simple catalog without paying for a larger commerce ecosystem.

Do not confuse the two Hostinger products

  • Hostinger Website Builder: ecommerce is included in the Business Website Builder plan.
  • Hostinger Ecommerce: a newer commerce product intended to centralize products, orders, inventory, and sales channels and connect with Hostinger websites, Horizons, WordPress, or other platforms.

Hostinger Ecommerce currently displays these promotional or term-dependent prices:

  • Starter: $2.99/month on the displayed 12-month offer, with up to five products.
  • Growth: $7.99/month on the displayed 12-month offer, with up to 300 products.
  • Scale: $19.99/month on the displayed 12-month offer, with unlimited products and businesses.

Hostinger advertises more than 100 payment methods and 0% Hostinger transaction fees. The headline prices are not directly comparable with month-to-month prices elsewhere: check the initial term, renewal rate, tax, product version, and cancellation terms on the Hostinger Ecommerce page.

The separate Website Builder page displays a Business Website Builder offer of $3.79/month when purchased for 48 months, with a displayed renewal price of $16.99/month. That is a long-term promotional website-builder commitment, not an apples-to-apples monthly Shopify comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Hostinger does well

  • It offers a low barrier to entry for a small physical- or digital-product catalog.
  • AI-generated starting content and templates can reduce setup time.
  • The separate Ecommerce product is intended to centralize orders, inventory, products, and channels rather than only provide a brochure website.

Limitations

  • Renewal pricing can be much higher than the introductory headline.
  • Check limits for products, variants, subscriptions, integrations, staff, and customization before building a business that expects rapid growth.
  • The ecosystem and developer community are smaller than Shopify’s, WordPress’s, or BigCommerce’s.
  • Hostinger Ecommerce is newer and should not be assumed to have the operational maturity or integration depth of Shopify.

Editorial verdict

Hostinger is a strong value choice for a small first store. It is not the safest selection for complex B2B, multi-store, advanced fulfillment, or rapid international expansion.

9. GoDaddy Websites + Marketing — best for the fastest simple launch

Best for

GoDaddy suits a local business, service business, or seller with a limited product line who wants a domain, hosting, marketing tools, and a basic store from one vendor with as little setup as possible.

Current price and catalog constraints

GoDaddy’s prices depend heavily on country, billing term, promotional rate, and product packaging. Use the live GoDaddy pricing page and record the capture date rather than relying on a static comparison number.

The current help documentation says a product can have up to three options, while the entire store can have up to 100 choices across product options. The cited documentation does not state a product-count limit for the online-store catalog, but option and choice limits can become restrictive for apparel, configurable goods, replacement parts, or products with many sizes, colors, and technical attributes. Review GoDaddy’s option limits and catalog documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What GoDaddy does well

  • It is quick to set up for a low-complexity store.
  • Existing GoDaddy domain, email, hosting, and marketing customers can keep more services under one account.
  • It is adequate for a small catalog where the goal is to establish an online presence rather than build a sophisticated merchandising operation.

Limitations

  • Design and layout control are more limited than on Wix, Squarespace, or Shopify.
  • Catalog, checkout, fulfillment, app, and automation capabilities are less extensive than those of the leading commerce-first platforms.
  • Product-option limits can disqualify it for configurable or variant-heavy products.
  • GoDaddy Payments and catalog synchronization depend on the current Commerce experience and account setup; test the exact workflow before migration.

Editorial verdict

GoDaddy is a convenience recommendation, not a serious choice for complex or high-growth ecommerce. It makes sense when speed outweighs design depth and operational flexibility.

Choose by business model

Physical products

For physical goods, compare more than the number of products a plan permits. Check:

  • Variants and product-option combinations.
  • Inventory across warehouses, stores, and fulfillment locations.
  • Shipping zones, carrier rates, package rules, and delivery estimates.
  • Local pickup and local delivery.
  • Returns, exchanges, refunds, and restocking.
  • Bundles, gift cards, backorders, and preorders.
  • Barcodes, purchase orders, and POS synchronization.

Best starting points: Shopify for a dedicated DTC operation, Square Online for an existing physical retailer, BigCommerce for complex catalogs, and Ecwid when the store must be added to an existing site.

Digital products

Digital sellers should check secure file delivery, download limits, video or course hosting, gated customer access, memberships, recurring billing, digital-product fees, and tax support. A platform may be inexpensive for physical products but expensive for digital content.

Squarespace is the clearest example: its digital-content and membership transaction fees are listed separately from online-store fees, at 7%, 5%, 1%, and 0% on Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced respectively. Confirm the exact product type and fee category in the Squarespace fee documentation.

Best starting points: WooCommerce for maximum control over courses and gated content, Shopify for a supported ecosystem, Squarespace for a polished content brand, and Hostinger for a simple low-cost catalog after verifying delivery features.

Subscriptions

Ask four questions before choosing:

  1. Are subscriptions native or dependent on an app or extension?
  2. Are they available on the entry plan?
  3. Do they support physical products, services, digital content, or all three?
  4. Does the chosen payment gateway support recurring billing in your country?

Then add any subscription-app fee to the total-cost model. A platform’s marketing page may say it supports subscriptions while the required recurring-payment workflow is limited by plan, country, product type, or gateway.

B2B sales

B2B buyers often need account hierarchies, several buyers per company, approval workflows, custom price lists, quotes, purchase orders, tax-exempt handling, invoices, shared carts, reordering, and ERP or CRM integrations. A standard consumer checkout with a wholesale discount code is not a complete B2B system.

BigCommerce is the clearest recommendation in this list because its current B2B materials specifically discuss customer groups, price lists, buyer portals, quotes, account hierarchies, shared carts, and multi-storefront capabilities. Read its B2B overview and B2B platform information, then verify which features belong to your plan. WooCommerce can be highly capable with the right extensions and technical team; Shopify can also serve B2B businesses, but the exact workflow and cost require plan and app analysis.

Retail and in-person sales

If you already use Square, Square Online is usually the first platform to evaluate because online and offline orders, inventory, payments, customer records, discounts, and reporting can remain in one system. Shopify POS is a stronger alternative for a brand whose main operation is Shopify and that also sells at events or stores. Wix, Ecwid, and other platforms can support in-person selling or POS integrations, but availability and synchronization depth vary by country, plan, and hardware.

International selling

International selling means more than displaying a currency symbol. Check:

  • Local currencies and payment methods.
  • Country or regional domains.
  • Translated catalogs and multilingual checkout.
  • Regional prices, catalogs, inventory, and promotions.
  • Duties, taxes, VAT or sales-tax workflows, and landed-cost calculations.
  • Merchant-account and payout availability in each target country.
  • Privacy, consumer-protection, accessibility, and data-transfer requirements.

BigCommerce and Shopify are the strongest starting points for a growing international operation, but no platform feature eliminates the need to configure shipping, tax, payments, and legal policies for each market.

Existing websites

  • Existing WordPress site: start with WooCommerce if the content, data ownership, and customization model matter most.
  • Existing Wix or Squarespace site: consider its native commerce first if the catalog is straightforward; choose Ecwid if you want to add a separate lightweight store without rebuilding the site.
  • Existing blog or nonprofit site: Ecwid is designed for this embedded-store use case.
  • Existing GoDaddy website and domain: GoDaddy can be the fastest route for a small catalog, but test product options first.

How to eliminate unsuitable platforms quickly

Use this short filter before comparing templates:

  1. Do you already use WordPress? If yes, shortlist WooCommerce first. Only move to Shopify, BigCommerce, or another hosted platform if the maintenance burden or operational requirements justify migration.
  2. Do you already use Square in a physical shop? Start with Square Online. A second commerce ecosystem may create duplicate inventory and customer-data work.
  3. Are you adding commerce to an existing site? Shortlist Ecwid before considering a complete redesign.
  4. Do you need B2B accounts, quotes, price lists, multiple storefronts, or an ERP integration? Start with BigCommerce or a properly engineered WooCommerce or Shopify implementation. Eliminate GoDaddy and most simple site builders.
  5. Is the catalog variant-heavy? Test real products—not a sample T-shirt—against product-option, variant, SKU, and inventory-location limits. Be particularly cautious with GoDaddy’s option and choice limits.
  6. Is the business primarily content, portfolio, services, or bookings with a small store? Shortlist Wix or Squarespace.
  7. Is the lowest initial price the overriding concern? Compare Hostinger’s renewal price and included features, not only its introductory offer.
  8. Is the business primarily selling online and expected to grow? Start with Shopify, then compare BigCommerce if native B2B, catalog, or multi-store functionality matters.

Any platform that fails a non-negotiable requirement—such as recurring payments, a required gateway, product variants, multiple warehouses, or a needed export—should be removed before you compare visual themes.

The real cost of an online store

Use this formula rather than comparing headline subscriptions:

Total monthly cost = platform subscription + payment processing + platform transaction fees + apps or extensions + hosting + domain and email + shipping or fulfillment software + maintenance or development.

Keep these fees separate

  1. Payment processing: charged by Shopify Payments, Stripe, PayPal, Wix Payments, Square, WooPayments, or another processor for handling the payment.
  2. Platform transaction fee: an additional percentage charged by the commerce platform.
  3. Third-party-provider fee: a platform charge that may apply when you use an external payment provider. BigCommerce’s new Open Payment Provider Fee is the most important current example in this comparison.
  4. App or extension fee: recurring or annual charges for subscriptions, reviews, shipping, loyalty, search, email, accounting, or other functions.
  5. GMV or revenue-based fee: a charge or plan change tied to sales volume. BigCommerce’s 2026 thresholds and Scale overage make this especially important.

Illustrative $10,000-per-month example

Suppose a store has $10,000 in monthly sales, 200 orders, and a $50 average order value. The following simplified examples use the published US rates above, assume every order is eligible for the stated rate, and exclude tax, refunds, shipping, apps, chargebacks, and other costs. They are illustrations, not quotes.

Example Subscription Processing calculation Illustrative monthly total before apps and other costs
Shopify Basic, annual billing, Shopify Payments $29 2.9% of $10,000 ($290) + $0.30 × 200 ($60) $379
Square Free $0 3.3% of $10,000 ($330) + $60 $390
Square Plus $49 2.9% of $10,000 ($290) + $60 $399
BigCommerce Core with an eligible embedded provider at a comparable 2.9% rate $29 $290 + $60; no additional Open Payment Provider Fee in this assumption $379
BigCommerce Core with an eligible external provider $29 $290 + $60 + 2% of $10,000 ($200) $579
WooCommerce with WooPayments Hosting could be about $25–$350 At an illustrative 2.9% rate: $290 + $60, plus hosting and extensions $375–$700 before extensions

The example shows why the cheapest subscription is not always the cheapest store. A higher plan can be worthwhile if it reduces payment or platform fees, includes a required feature, or replaces several paid apps. Conversely, an apparently low-cost platform can become expensive after renewal, external-payment fees, extensions, or developer work.

Free plans, promotional prices, and misleading comparisons

A free plan may not be a usable store

Free or low-cost plans may lack a custom domain, checkout, shipping tools, abandoned-cart recovery, customer accounts, marketplace selling, social selling, or the ability to remove platform branding. Some permit a product catalog but not a complete purchase flow. Compare the first plan that supports your actual business, not the cheapest plan shown in an advertisement.

Promotional prices are not normal operating costs

For every advertised price, record:

  • Country and currency.
  • Monthly, annual, or multi-year billing.
  • Initial promotional period.
  • Renewal price.
  • Whether tax is included.
  • Whether the offer is limited to new customers.
  • Whether it applies to a website plan or a genuine commerce plan.

Hostinger’s $2.99 Ecommerce offer and its 48-month Website Builder offer demonstrate why term length matters. Wix and Shopify also show different annual and monthly equivalents. GoDaddy and Ecwid use dynamic pricing that should be checked at the point of purchase.

Payment support is geographic

Payment methods, merchant accounts, payout timing, POS hardware, tax automation, and recurring billing vary by country. Shopify Payments, Wix Payments, Squarespace Payments, Square, and GoDaddy Payments are not globally interchangeable. Confirm that the platform supports your business country, currency, legal entity, preferred gateway, and payout account before designing the store.

Unlimited is not unlimited in every sense

Unlimited products may still coexist with limits on variants, storage, staff accounts, API calls, catalog imports, marketplaces, locations, performance, or sales volume. Test the full product structure—including options, SKUs, images, subscriptions, and bundles—before treating an unlimited label as proof of scalability.

What to test before paying

  1. Create one real product with every variant, SKU, image, digital file, subscription rule, and shipping requirement.
  2. Place a test order on mobile and desktop.
  3. Run a refund, cancellation, discount, tax, and shipping scenario.
  4. Check how inventory changes after an online sale, in-person sale, cancellation, and return.
  5. Confirm that your preferred payment methods and recurring payments work in your country.
  6. Inspect the product URL, metadata, image handling, redirects, sitemap, and structured-data controls.
  7. Export the catalog and determine whether orders, customers, reviews, media, discounts, and subscriptions can also be exported.
  8. Check support hours and whether support is documentation-only, chat-based, or assisted by a specialist.
  9. Calculate the cost at your expected sales volume, not only at launch.

Switching platforms: the site is easier to migrate than the business

Moving a theme is usually less important than preserving commercial data and customer access. Before canceling the old platform, export and securely store:

  • Complete product catalog, variants, SKUs, prices, images, videos, and digital files.
  • Customer records and consent status.
  • Orders, refunds, tax records, and fulfillment history.
  • Reviews, ratings, discount codes, gift cards, and loyalty data.
  • Subscription contracts and recurring-payment relationships. These often cannot be transferred directly and may require customer reauthorization.
  • Existing URLs, SEO titles, descriptions, canonical settings, analytics configuration, and a redirect map.
  • Shipping profiles, tax rules, integrations, warehouse locations, and custom checkout fields.

Plan a staging period, keep the old store available until orders and redirects are tested, and use permanent redirects for changed URLs. Customer passwords are commonly not portable between platforms, so plan a secure account-recovery or password-reset process. Do not assume that an export of products is a complete migration.

Alternatives for narrower needs

The nine recommendations above cover the most useful general-purpose choices for this audience. A narrower business model may justify another platform:

Important business responsibilities

An e-commerce platform can automate parts of tax calculation, payment security, shipping, cookie consent, or privacy management, but automation does not transfer every legal responsibility to the provider. Depending on where you and your customers are located, you may need to address business registration, sales-tax or VAT registration, privacy notices, consumer-protection rules, refund and return policies, accessibility, email consent, product safety, and payment compliance. Obtain jurisdiction-specific advice where necessary; do not treat a builder’s settings as legal advice.

Bottom line

Choose Shopify when selling online is the main business and you want the lowest-regret general-purpose decision. Choose Wix when brand presentation and flexible pages matter just as much as the store. Choose BigCommerce when B2B, large catalogs, multi-storefront selling, or international operations justify deeper commerce tools. Choose WooCommerce when WordPress ownership and customization outweigh maintenance. Choose Squarespace for a visually polished, content-led brand; Square Online for an existing Square retailer; Ecwid for an embedded store; Hostinger for a low-cost simple launch; and GoDaddy only when speed and simplicity are more important than operational depth.

Before signing up, price the complete stack, test one real product and checkout, verify payment availability in your country, and document how you would export the store if the business outgrows the platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest e-commerce website builder for beginners?

Wix, Hostinger, and GoDaddy are among the easiest to set up visually, while Shopify is usually the easier choice for operating a dedicated store as it grows. The easiest launch is not always the easiest long-term operation, so test product entry, shipping, refunds, and order management before choosing.

Which e-commerce platform is cheapest?

There is no universal cheapest platform. Hostinger has the lowest displayed introductory prices in this comparison, Square Online has a $0 Free plan, WooCommerce has free core software, and Ecwid may have no platform transaction fee. Processing, hosting, apps, extensions, renewal prices, and maintenance can make the total cost higher than the subscription suggests.

Can I start selling online for free?

Sometimes, but a free plan may not include a custom domain, checkout, shipping, customer accounts, or other essential features. Square Online offers a $0-per-month-per-location Free plan, while WooCommerce’s core software is free but requires hosting and other services. Payment processing still generally costs money.

Is Shopify better than Wix?

Shopify is generally the better default when the website’s primary purpose is commerce, omnichannel selling, inventory, and growth. Wix is generally better when visual page control, services, bookings, content, and a small store are equally important. Neither is universally better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is WooCommerce really free?

The WooCommerce core platform is free and does not take a WooCommerce revenue share, but a working store still needs WordPress hosting, a domain, payment processing, themes or extensions, backups, security, updates, and possibly developer support. WooCommerce’s own estimate puts hosting for most stores at roughly $25–$350 per month.

Which platform is best for a physical retail store?

Square Online is usually the first platform to evaluate if the business already uses Square POS because online and in-person products, inventory, payments, and customer data can stay in one ecosystem. Shopify with Shopify POS is a strong alternative for a brand centered on Shopify.

Which builder is best for subscriptions or digital products?

The answer depends on the product, gateway, and required customer-access workflow. Shopify and WooCommerce have broad ecosystems, Squarespace integrates digital content and memberships with clearly published fee tiers, and Hostinger can suit a simple low-cost catalog. Verify recurring billing, secure delivery, download limits, and digital-content fees before subscribing.

Which e-commerce platform is best for B2B?

BigCommerce is the clearest starting point in this comparison because its current B2B materials describe customer groups, price lists, buyer portals, quotes, account hierarchies, shared carts, and reordering. WooCommerce and Shopify can also support B2B, but the required extensions, plan, integrations, and implementation work must be priced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I move my store to another platform later?

Usually, but migration is not one-click. Products may export more easily than customer passwords, reviews, subscriptions, discount codes, order history, URLs, tax rules, and analytics. Export all data, create a redirect map, test the new checkout, and plan for password resets and subscription reauthorization before canceling the old platform.

Do e-commerce website builders include payment processing?

They generally integrate with or provide a payment processor, but the processing charge is separate from the website subscription. Some platforms also add a platform transaction fee or a fee for using an external provider. BigCommerce’s 2026 Open Payment Provider Fee is a current example of why gateway selection affects total cost.

Do I need a business license, sales-tax registration, privacy policy, or return policy?

Those requirements depend on your business location, products, customers, and sales jurisdictions. A platform may provide tax, privacy, cookie, or policy tools, but those tools do not replace jurisdiction-specific legal and tax advice or your responsibility to comply.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Shopify. Best for design: Wix. Best for B2B and complex catalogs: BigCommerce. Best for WordPress control: WooCommerce. Best for visual, content-led brands: Squarespace. Best for existing physical retailers: Square Online. Best for adding commerce to an existing site: Ecwid. Best low-budget starting point: Hostinger. Fastest simple launch: GoDaddy.
