Many Command Prompt commands work in a standard window, but system-level tasks require an elevated session. Examples include changing protected files, repairing Windows components, modifying boot settings, and running commands against services or system partitions.
On Windows 11, the Windows key + X menu normally launches Terminal (Admin), with Command Prompt available as a profile. On Windows 10, you may see Command Prompt (Admin), Windows PowerShell (Admin), or Terminal instead, depending on the Windows build and configuration.
Before you start: confirm that Command Prompt is elevated
A normal Command Prompt can open and run commands successfully, so the fact that a window appears does not prove it has administrator privileges.

A standard user must provide administrator-account credentials when prompted. Selecting Run as administrator does not bypass that requirement.

1. Use Start search and Run as administrator
- Select Start and type
Command Promptorcmd. - In the search results, select Run as administrator for the Command Prompt app.
- If the option is not shown, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
This is usually the easiest method because it works on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
2. Use the search keyboard shortcut
- Open Start and search for
cmd. - Leave Command Prompt selected in the results.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
- Approve the UAC prompt.
Pressing only Enter opens a regular, non-elevated Command Prompt. The three-key shortcut is what requests administrator access.
3. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) from the Power User menu
- Press Windows + X, or right-click the Start button.
- On Windows 11, select Terminal (Admin).
- On systems that still provide the legacy option, select Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the UAC prompt.
If Terminal opens PowerShell, select the tab drop-down arrow and choose Command Prompt. The Terminal window remains elevated when you switch to that profile.
Older Windows 10 instructions often say to select Command Prompt (Admin). That label may instead appear as Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Terminal (Admin) on some installations.
4. Use the Run dialog
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter the exact command
cmd. - Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
- Approve the UAC prompt.
cmd
Do not press only Enter. That launches cmd.exe without elevation.

5. Start it through Task Manager
- Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- If Task Manager is in its compact view, select More details.
- Select Run new task. On some builds, this is under File > Run new task.
- In the Create new task box, enter
cmd. - Enable Create this task with administrative privileges.
- Select OK and approve UAC.
If the checkbox is clear, Task Manager opens a standard Command Prompt instead.
6. Run cmd.exe from File Explorer
- Open File Explorer with Windows + E.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Find
cmd.exe. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the UAC prompt.
cmd.exe is the executable file. Command Prompt is the name Windows displays for the application.
7. Open Command Prompt from File Explorer, then elevate it
File Explorer can start Command Prompt in the folder you are viewing:
- Open a File Explorer window and select its address bar.
- Type
cmdand press Enter.
This starts Command Prompt with the current folder as its working directory, but it is not elevated. To obtain administrator rights, close it and use Start search with Run as administrator, or open the Run dialog and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter after entering cmd.
Therefore, typing cmd in the File Explorer address bar is an opening shortcut, not an administrator shortcut.

8. Create a shortcut that always requests elevation
- Create or locate a shortcut whose target is:
C:WindowsSystem32cmd.exe
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and select Advanced…
- Enable Run as administrator.
- Select OK, then Apply, and then OK.
Opening that shortcut now triggers UAC and starts Command Prompt elevated. The setting applies only to that shortcut; it does not make every Command Prompt window on the computer run as administrator.
Which method should you use?
| Situation | Best method |
|---|---|
| You want the quickest everyday option | Start search and Run as administrator |
| You prefer keyboard controls | Search for cmd, then press Ctrl + Shift + Enter |
| You already have Task Manager open | Run new task with administrative privileges enabled |
| You want a fixed working folder | Open cmd from File Explorer, then elevate it separately |
| You use elevated Command Prompt frequently | Configure a shortcut to Run as administrator |
Common problems
The window opened, but it is not administrator Command Prompt
Check the title bar. If it does not identify the window as administrator, close it and repeat the method, making sure you selected Run as administrator or used Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
Ctrl + Shift + Enter did nothing useful
The shortcut must be used while Command Prompt is selected in Start search, or while cmd is entered in the Run dialog. Pressing Enter alone starts a non-elevated process.
Windows asks for an administrator password
This normally means the current account is a standard user. Enter valid credentials for an administrator account, or ask an administrator to perform the task.
Terminal opens PowerShell
That is usually a profile choice rather than an elevation failure. In the elevated Terminal window, open the tab menu and select Command Prompt.

The Windows key + X menu does not show Command Prompt (Admin)
On current Windows 11 installations, use Terminal (Admin). Command Prompt runs inside Terminal as a profile. The old “Command Prompt (Admin)” wording is not a dependable Windows 11 instruction.
Can I make every Command Prompt session elevated?
Not with the shortcut setting alone. The Run as administrator option applies to the particular shortcut. Other Command Prompt launches still use their normal privilege level.
Also remember that an elevated Command Prompt does not guarantee identical behavior for every program it launches. Some applications apply their own security checks, request elevation separately, or use virtualization and compatibility behavior.
FAQ
What is the fastest way to open Command Prompt as administrator?
Search for cmd from Start, select Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. Alternatively, with Command Prompt selected in the search results, press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs Terminal (Admin) the same as Command Prompt (Admin)?
They use different host applications: Terminal (Admin) opens Windows Terminal, while Command Prompt (Admin) opens the legacy console host. In elevated Terminal, selecting the Command Prompt profile runs cmd.exe with administrator privileges.

Does typing cmd in File Explorer open an administrator Command Prompt?
No. Typing cmd in File Explorer’s address bar opens a normal Command Prompt in the current folder. You must use a separate elevation method.
How do I know whether Command Prompt is running as administrator?
Check for Administrator: Command Prompt in the title bar. In Windows Terminal, look for Administrator: Windows Terminal and confirm that the active tab is Command Prompt.
Can a standard Windows account open Command Prompt as administrator?
It can request elevation, but Windows requires credentials for an administrator account. A standard account cannot elevate without those credentials.
The Bottom Line
For most users, Start search followed by Run as administrator is the simplest option. Use Ctrl + Shift + Enter when you want a keyboard-only shortcut, or choose Terminal (Admin) from the Windows key + X menu on Windows 11. Whichever method you use, verify the administrator label and approve UAC before running commands that modify Windows.
