The best GPU overclocking software depends on your graphics card and tuning goal: MSI Afterburner is the strongest all-rounder, AMD Adrenalin is best for Radeon, and NVIDIA App is the simplest first-party option for GeForce RTX. ASUS, EVGA, ZOTAC, Sapphire, and Gigabyte utilities add model-specific controls, but compatibility varies by firmware, driver, laptop, and cooling design.

GPU tuning software can adjust core and memory clocks, power and temperature limits, fan curves, voltage-frequency behavior, or automatic performance profiles. Those controls are not interchangeable, and a tool that recognizes a GPU does not necessarily unlock every control. Create a stock profile, measure baseline performance, and change one setting at a time before relying on a new profile.

Key takeaways: 8 Top GPU Overclocking Software for Revving Up Your Graphics

  • MSI Afterburner is the best overall choice for many-brand manual tuning, fan curves, monitoring, profiles, and an in-game OSD.
  • AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition is the most coherent first choice for Radeon because tuning is integrated into the graphics driver package.
  • NVIDIA App offers first-party automatic tuning for supported GeForce hardware; NVIDIA says its scan can take approximately 10–20 minutes.
  • ASUS GPU Tweak III, EVGA Precision X1, ZOTAC FireStorm, SAPPHIRE TriXX, and Gigabyte/AORUS software are primarily board-partner utilities whose controls depend on the exact card model.
  • Automatic tuning produces a starting profile, not proof that every game or workload is stable.
  • Install one primary application that controls clocks, voltage, or fans; multiple competing utilities can apply conflicting profiles and fan curves.

Which GPU overclocking software should you use?

Use MSI Afterburner if you want one broadly compatible, manual-control utility for a desktop NVIDIA or AMD card. Use AMD Adrenalin first on a Radeon GPU and NVIDIA App first on a GeForce RTX card if you prefer an official, simpler workflow. Use a board-partner utility when proprietary lighting, fan-stop modes, sensors, or profiles matter more than universal compatibility.

What does GPU overclocking software actually change?

GPU overclocking software changes operating targets rather than guaranteeing a fixed clock speed. Modern GPUs dynamically adjust frequency and voltage according to workload, temperature, and power. NVIDIA explains this behavior through its GPU Boost technology documentation, so a core offset such as +100 MHz does not mean the GPU will run exactly 100 MHz faster at every moment.

Core-clock offset
Raises the target frequency for the GPU’s shader and graphics-processing cores. A higher setting can improve performance, but instability may appear as a crash, driver reset, or visual artifact.
Memory-clock offset
Raises VRAM frequency and can help workloads limited by memory bandwidth. Memory instability can be subtle, producing texture corruption, flicker, rendering errors, crashes, or even lower performance.
Voltage control
Changes the voltage-frequency operating point when the GPU firmware, board design, driver, and software permit it. Voltage controls are commonly locked on laptops and some desktop cards.
Power limit
Allows the card to sustain higher boost behavior for longer, subject to the limit programmed into the card BIOS and the capabilities of the power delivery and cooling systems.
Temperature limit
Changes the temperature point at which boost behavior begins to reduce. A higher temperature target is not automatically desirable because it can increase noise and thermal stress.
Fan curve
Sets how fan speed responds to temperature. A more aggressive curve can reduce temperature but usually increases acoustic noise.
Undervolting
Attempts to maintain a chosen frequency at lower voltage. Undervolting often targets lower power use, temperature, and noise, and can sometimes improve sustained performance by reducing thermal or power throttling.
Automatic tuning
Runs a vendor or utility scan that estimates a usable profile. Automatic tuning is a starting point, not a guarantee of stability in every game.

Which utilities work with NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel Arc GPUs?

Compatibility depends on more than the GPU brand. Firmware, board design, driver version, operating system, laptop controls, OEM restrictions, and the exact card model determine which sliders and sensors appear.

GPU family Best starting point What to expect
NVIDIA GeForce desktop MSI Afterburner or NVIDIA App Afterburner generally offers deeper manual control; NVIDIA App is simpler and first-party. Controls vary by generation and board.
NVIDIA GeForce laptop NVIDIA App or the laptop manufacturer’s utility Voltage, power, and fan controls may be locked or controlled by the laptop firmware.
AMD Radeon desktop AMD Adrenalin Driver-integrated GPU, memory, fan, power, profile, undervolting, and automatic-tuning features may be available.
AMD Radeon laptop AMD Adrenalin or OEM utility Cooling and power limits are often controlled by the laptop manufacturer.
Intel Arc Check current Intel, board-partner, and utility documentation Do not assume that a general-purpose tool exposes overclocking controls for a specific Arc model.
Prebuilt desktop or small-form-factor PC OEM utility first, then verify a universal tool Proprietary firmware, shared thermal budgets, restricted power limits, and compact cooling can limit tuning.

Universal support means that the program can recognize multiple brands; it does not mean every card exposes voltage, power, memory, fan, or RGB control. Board-partner programs can expose proprietary features that a universal program cannot, but those programs may work incompletely on another brand’s card.

1. MSI Afterburner: best overall GPU overclocking software

MSI Afterburner is the best overall choice for cross-brand manual tuning, fan curves, monitoring, and an in-game OSD. MSI says Afterburner works with graphics cards from different manufacturers, not only MSI cards, while the available controls still depend on the specific hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Afterburner can provide core-clock, memory-clock, voltage, power, and fan controls where the card supports them. The utility also includes hardware monitoring, graphs, profile management, an on-screen display, custom fan curves, and OC Scanner on supported NVIDIA hardware. MSI’s Afterburner overview documents the broad feature set.

Useful paths include Settings → General, where supported users can enable Unlock voltage control and Unlock voltage monitoring; Settings → Fan, where user-defined software automatic fan control enables curve editing; and Ctrl+F, which opens the voltage/frequency curve editor on supported NVIDIA cards. MSI’s official Afterburner guide covers baseline testing, monitoring, fan-curve editing, voltage settings, and OSD setup.

Limitation: greyed-out voltage or power controls are usually a hardware, firmware, driver, or vendor restriction rather than a missing checkbox. Afterburner is also not a replacement for the AMD or NVIDIA driver suite. Do not run Afterburner alongside another application that also applies clock, voltage, fan, or startup settings.

Download safely: use MSI’s official download guidance; MSI specifically warns users to use MSI’s site or Guru3D rather than unrelated third-party download portals.

Use MSI Afterburner if: you want detailed, brand-agnostic manual control and do not need a board partner’s proprietary RGB or device features.

2. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition: best for Radeon GPUs

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition is the best native choice for Radeon owners because performance tuning is integrated into the AMD graphics driver package. Open Performance → Tuning and inspect the controls exposed for the installed GPU rather than assuming every Radeon has the same options.

Supported systems may expose GPU and memory clocks, fan control, power tuning, undervolting, saved profiles, metrics, and automatic or one-click tuning. AMD describes these features on its Performance Tuning page.

Adrenalin is usually the cleanest choice for a Radeon user who wants tuning, driver updates, game profiles, metrics, and Radeon-specific features in one application. The main limitation is hardware and OEM variation: a laptop or prebuilt system may lock voltage, power, memory, or fan settings even when the same GPU family exposes those controls on a desktop card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMD’s tuning documentation includes a warning that overclocking AMD processors beyond stock specifications may affect the applicable warranty. That statement should not be generalized into a claim that every Radeon graphics-card warranty is automatically voided. Check the current warranty terms for the specific board partner and region before changing settings.

Use AMD Adrenalin if: you own a Radeon card and want native driver-integrated tuning, especially if undervolting and Radeon monitoring are more important than cross-brand compatibility.

3. NVIDIA App: best for easy GeForce automatic tuning

NVIDIA App is the best simple first-party option for supported GeForce RTX users who want automatic tuning rather than detailed voltage-curve work. NVIDIA’s current workflow places the feature under NVIDIA App → System → Performance → Automatic Tuning, although the exact navigation label can vary between releases; use the label displayed in the installed version.

NVIDIA’s automatic-tuning announcement says the scan can take approximately 10–20 minutes and exposes power, temperature, voltage, and fan targets for advanced users. Leave the system idle while the scan runs and avoid treating the result as a universal stability certificate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVIDIA App combines driver, game, performance, and overlay functions. Its appeal is low complexity: the application can estimate a profile without requiring the user to manually search for a stable core and memory offset. Its limitation is granularity. Enthusiasts who want detailed voltage/frequency-curve editing generally have more control in Afterburner.

NVIDIA says Automatic Tuning is designed not to damage the GPU or invalidate its warranty, but NVIDIA also warns that overclocking can cause instability or visual artifacts in particular games. That distinction matters: the automatic scan is a vendor-supported starting point, while manual tuning and real-game validation still require care.

Use NVIDIA App if: you have a compatible desktop GeForce RTX card and want an official automatic profile with minimal manual adjustment. Laptop controls may be substantially more restricted.

4. ASUS GPU Tweak III: best for ASUS graphics cards

ASUS GPU Tweak III is the best fit for ASUS graphics-card owners who want card-specific profiles, fan control, and NVIDIA OC Scanner support where available. ASUS lists GPU Tweak III version 2.1.6.0 stable on its cited product page, but version availability can change after publication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ASUS lists a voltage-frequency tuner, OC Scanner for supported NVIDIA cards, per-application profiles, fan controls, OSD profiles, monitoring improvements, and fan-curve fixes on its GPU Tweak III product page. ASUS-specific lighting and card features can make GPU Tweak III more useful than a generic utility for an ASUS card.

Feature coverage varies by GPU family and card model. A non-ASUS card may be recognized but expose fewer controls or less complete vendor integration. GPU Tweak III is therefore not the default recommendation for every NVIDIA or AMD owner.

Use GPU Tweak III if: you own an ASUS card and want per-application profiles, ASUS hardware features, or a built-in NVIDIA scanning workflow.

5. EVGA Precision X1: best for supported EVGA NVIDIA cards

EVGA Precision X1 is best reserved for owners of supported EVGA NVIDIA graphics cards. The official Precision X1 page describes GPU-clock, memory-clock, voltage, fan, fan-curve, monitoring, OSD, RGB, profile-hotkey, and OC Scanner features on supported hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Precision X1 can be an excellent match when an EVGA card’s real-time wattage sensors, lighting, fan behavior, or model-specific controls matter. EVGA’s software catalog also contains legacy products and releases, so do not confuse Precision X1 with older PrecisionX or Precision XOC entries.

  • For MSI GeForce RTX 3060 12GB VENTUS 2X OC
  • Model: PLD10010S12HH

The central limitation is compatibility. Precision X1 should not be recommended as a universal NVIDIA utility simply because it supports NVIDIA GPUs. EVGA hardware and GPU-generation limits determine whether the application is useful.

EVGA’s page surfaced version 1.2.6.0 in the research material, but that page alone does not establish that 1.2.6.0 is the newest release at publication time. Check the live official download page before installing.

Use Precision X1 if: you own a supported EVGA card and want EVGA-specific monitoring, RGB, profiles, or OC Scanner integration.

6. ZOTAC FireStorm: best for ZOTAC-specific controls

ZOTAC FireStorm is intended for ZOTAC graphics-card owners who need card-specific clock, fan, profile, or lighting controls. FireStorm should be treated as a ZOTAC-focused utility rather than a universal overclocking program.

The research material identifies vendor-specific clock and fan management, lighting controls, and profile-based operation as features to verify on the current product page. Exact support depends on the ZOTAC model and generation, and the research pass did not surface a current official FireStorm product or version page with enough detail to make stronger current claims.

For a ZOTAC card, compare FireStorm with Afterburner and NVIDIA App. FireStorm is the more logical choice when proprietary lighting or model-specific behavior matters; Afterburner is generally the clearer choice for broad manual tuning and monitoring.

Use FireStorm if: your ZOTAC card’s support page confirms the installed model and you need ZOTAC-specific fan or lighting features. Verify the current download and supported models before publication or installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. SAPPHIRE TriXX: best for supported Sapphire Radeon cards

SAPPHIRE TriXX is best for supported Sapphire Radeon cards when Sapphire-specific features matter. TriXX is not a general NVIDIA or Intel solution, and the exact feature set differs between Sapphire product families.

The research material identifies Sapphire-specific fan, clock, monitoring, and lighting functions, including features such as Nitro Glow or TriXX Boost, as capabilities to verify for the exact card. The research pass did not provide a current official TriXX product page or version listing, so confirm the current download page and supported GPU families before publishing or recommending a particular release.

AMD Adrenalin remains the stronger default for a Sapphire Radeon user who wants the broadest driver-integrated tuning, undervolting, metrics, and game-profile workflow. TriXX becomes more compelling when a Sapphire card exposes a proprietary feature that Adrenalin or Afterburner does not manage.

Use TriXX if: your supported Sapphire card benefits from Sapphire-specific lighting or hardware controls and the current TriXX release explicitly recognizes your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Gigabyte Control Center or AORUS utility: best for supported Gigabyte cards

Gigabyte Control Center or the appropriate AORUS graphics-card utility is best for supported Gigabyte and AORUS cards when board-specific fan, clock, RGB, or profile management is important. Gigabyte’s software naming and product coverage have changed across generations, so AORUS Engine and newer Gigabyte Control Center workflows should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the card’s support page.

The research pass did not surface a current official Gigabyte tuning page with enough detail to verify those claims comprehensively. Start with Gigabyte’s graphics-card support destination and follow the support page for the exact card.

A generic utility may be simpler if you only need core clocks, memory clocks, a fan curve, and an OSD. Gigabyte’s own software is more appropriate when RGB or proprietary board controls are part of the goal.

Use Gigabyte or AORUS software if: the exact Gigabyte support page identifies the current utility for your card and you need board-specific features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you use automatic tuning or manual overclocking?

Automatic tuning is the better starting point for beginners, while manual tuning is better for users who want control over the performance, temperature, noise, and efficiency trade-off. Neither method eliminates the need for testing.

Automatic-tuning workflow

  1. Close games and demanding applications.
  2. Open the supported tool: NVIDIA App → System → Performance → Automatic Tuning; AMD Adrenalin → Performance → Tuning; MSI Afterburner → OC Scanner where supported; or ASUS GPU Tweak III’s OC Scanner on supported NVIDIA cards.
  3. Leave the system idle while the scan runs. NVIDIA says its scan may take approximately 10–20 minutes.
  4. Apply the resulting profile and test the games you actually play.
  5. Save a stock profile and disable automatic startup loading if the profile causes instability.

An automatic scan tests a defined process and workload. A game can still fail because it exercises different shader, memory, ray-tracing, or power-management paths.

Manual-tuning workflow

  1. Install the current graphics driver and one primary tuning utility.
  2. Record stock benchmark results, average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time behavior, temperature, hotspot temperature where available, clock, power, and fan speed.
  3. Save or note the stock settings before making changes.
  4. Set a conservative power limit only if the card and system permit it.
  5. Increase the core clock in small increments and run a repeatable short test after each change.
  6. Return the core to stock or a known-stable value, then test memory separately in small increments.
  7. Run a longer test across several games and workloads.
  8. Set the fan curve after choosing an acceptable temperature and noise target.
  9. Save the stable profile and keep a stock profile available for troubleshooting.

Do not copy a fixed offset from another GPU and assume it is safe. The same model number can behave differently because of chip variation, firmware, cooling, and board design.

How should you test a GPU overclock?

Use layered testing because no single benchmark proves universal stability. Begin with a repeatable benchmark for quick comparisons, add a demanding synthetic load for thermal and power behavior, and finish with several real games, including the games you play most.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Quick comparison: repeat the same benchmark at stock and after each change.
  • Thermal and power check: run a demanding synthetic workload and watch temperature, hotspot, power, fan speed, and clock behavior.
  • Game validation: test multiple engines and workloads, including ray tracing or high-resolution modes when relevant.
  • Memory validation: use a longer loop and inspect the rendered image for flicker, texture corruption, small errors, or driver resets.
  • Performance validation: compare average FPS, 1% lows, and frame-time consistency rather than relying only on a peak score.

Watch for application crashes, driver resets, artifacts, clock oscillation, overheating, and unexpectedly lower performance. A profile that completes a benchmark can still fail in a particular game.

What should you monitor?

  • GPU temperature and GPU hotspot temperature where available.
  • Memory temperature where the hardware exposes it.
  • Core clock, memory clock, and GPU utilization.
  • Board power and fan speed.
  • Average FPS, 1% lows, and frame-time consistency.
  • Driver-reset and application-crash events.

HWiNFO and GPU-Z are useful monitoring companions, while RTSS can support frame-rate limiting and OSD workflows with Afterburner. These programs should be treated as monitoring or overlay companions, not additional entries in this overclocking-software ranking. A paid benchmark is not mandatory; a repeatable free benchmark or game workload can be sufficient for many users.

Is undervolting better than overclocking for some GPUs?

Undervolting is often the better goal when temperature, fan noise, power consumption, or sustained performance matters more than the highest short-term clock. A well-tuned undervolt can maintain similar performance at lower voltage and reduce heat, which may allow the GPU to sustain its boost behavior more consistently in a thermally constrained case.

Undervolting is especially attractive for quiet builds, small-form-factor systems, laptops with restricted cooling, and cards that already run into a power or temperature limit. Undervolting is not automatically stable: test it with the same layered process used for an overclock, and save a stock profile before experimenting.

What can make GPU tuning unstable?

GPU instability usually comes from an excessive core or memory setting, insufficient cooling, conflicting control software, or a hardware and firmware limit. Common failure modes include:

  • 3 fans combined into one interface, Can be connected to the motherboard's 3-pin or 4-pin interface and you only need to access one interface to run all the fans.
  • Core instability: game crashes, driver timeouts, black screens, or benchmark failures.
  • Memory instability: flicker, texture corruption, rendering errors, crashes, driver resets, or lower scores.
  • Thermal instability: rising temperatures, aggressive fan noise, clock oscillation, or thermal throttling.
  • Software conflicts: two applications applying different clocks, fan curves, overlays, or startup profiles.
  • OEM restrictions: unavailable controls on laptops, prebuilt systems, and compact PCs with proprietary firmware or shared CPU/GPU thermal budgets.

Higher clocks are not automatically faster. If a card reaches a thermal or power limit and throttles, a smaller overclock or an undervolt can produce better sustained performance.

How do you recover from a failed GPU overclock?

Recovery checklist

  1. Close the game or benchmark.
  2. Reset the tuning application to its default profile.
  3. If Windows remains unstable, reboot into Safe Mode.
  4. Disable apply at startup or the equivalent automatic profile-loading option.
  5. Reopen the utility and restore stock settings.
  6. If the tuning application conflicts with the driver or appears corrupted, uninstall the utility and reinstall the graphics driver through the manufacturer’s normal procedure.
  7. If artifacts remain at stock settings, power down and check card seating, power connectors, cooling, and driver state.

Do not flash a modified GPU BIOS merely to obtain more software control. BIOS modification is outside the scope of a general overclocking guide and has substantially higher recovery risk than software-based tuning.

Can you run more than one GPU tuning utility?

Use one primary control application for clocks, voltage, power, fans, and startup profiles. Running Adrenalin, Afterburner, GPU Tweak, Precision X1, FireStorm, or another vendor utility at the same time can create competing settings, fan curves, overlays, or scheduled startup tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitoring-only applications are generally less problematic, but duplicate OSD hooks can still conflict. If troubleshooting becomes difficult, close or uninstall every application that applies GPU settings, reboot, restore stock settings, and then add back one primary utility.

How should warranty and safety claims be interpreted?

Do not assume that overclocking automatically voids every graphics-card warranty or that every automatic tuner is risk-free. Warranty language varies by manufacturer, board partner, region, software terms, physical-damage exclusions, and whether the change is manual or vendor-supported.

AMD’s Performance Tuning page contains a warranty warning concerning overclocking AMD processors beyond stock specifications; that warning should not be rewritten as a universal claim about every Radeon graphics-card warranty. NVIDIA describes its NVIDIA App Automatic Tuning as designed not to damage the GPU or invalidate its warranty, while also warning that overclocking can cause instability or visual artifacts in particular titles. Read the current terms for the exact product before tuning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GPU overclocking safe?

GPU overclocking can be reasonable when performed within the controls supported by the card, with temperatures and stability monitored, but overclocking is not risk-free or universally stable. Save a stock profile, change one setting at a time, and test real games as well as benchmarks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is MSI Afterburner compatible with non-MSI graphics cards?

MSI Afterburner works across many graphics-card brands, not only MSI cards, but the available clock, voltage, power, fan, and monitoring controls depend on the GPU firmware, board design, driver, and vendor restrictions.

Why are GPU voltage controls greyed out?

Greyed-out GPU voltage controls usually indicate a firmware, board, driver, laptop, or OEM restriction. Enabling voltage-control options in a utility cannot unlock a control that the card does not expose.

Does GPU overclocking void the warranty?

GPU overclocking does not automatically void every warranty, but warranty terms differ by manufacturer, board partner, region, and type of tuning. Check the current warranty for the exact graphics card instead of relying on a universal claim.

Can you overclock a laptop GPU?

Some laptop GPUs support limited tuning, but laptop manufacturers commonly lock voltage, power, and fan controls or manage them through proprietary firmware. Start with the laptop manufacturer’s utility and expect fewer controls than on a desktop card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: choose MSI Afterburner for broad manual control, AMD Adrenalin for Radeon, and NVIDIA App for simple GeForce automatic tuning. Use ASUS, EVGA, ZOTAC, Sapphire, or Gigabyte software only when the exact card is supported and its proprietary features justify a vendor-specific utility. Whichever tool you choose, keep a stock profile, test one variable at a time, monitor temperatures and frame times, and validate the result in the games you actually play.
