The best time-lapse apps for Android depend on the job: Velocity Lapse is the strongest specialist choice for manual controls and long projects, Framelapse 2 is the best feature-rich dedicated camera, and the built-in Camera app is usually best for casual recording. PicPac suits stop motion, while Filmora, CapCut, and VN edit footage you already captured.

That distinction matters because an intervalometer captures frames at planned intervals, while an editor merely speeds up existing video or assembles still images. The eight choices below are therefore not interchangeable: some capture, some assemble, and some only perform post-production.

Key takeaways

  • Velocity Lapse is the strongest specialist option for manual exposure, focus, scheduling, screen-off capture, and long-duration Photolapse projects.
  • Framelapse 2 offers a broad dedicated capture feature set, including custom intervals, automatic stopping, remote shutter support, stabilization, and up-to-4K output where the phone supports those features.
  • The built-in Camera app is often the simplest and most reliable option when a phone includes Time Lapse or Hyperlapse.
  • PicPac is useful for stop motion, audio, and photo-based projects, but its Google Play listing reports a June 24, 2020 update, free 360p output, and a watermark.
  • Filmora Mobile, CapCut, and VN are editors for existing video or image sequences, not replacements for a dedicated intervalometer during an unattended, multi-hour capture.

Quick comparison: which Android time-lapse app should you choose?

Choose a native camera mode for convenience, a dedicated capture app for interval and camera controls, and an editor when the footage already exists.

1. Velocity Lapse: best specialist Android time-lapse app

Velocity Lapse is the best overall specialist choice when the project needs manual camera control, scheduling, screen-off operation, or a long capture period. The Velocity Lapse Google Play listing separates conventional Time-lapse from Photolapse, a mode intended for extended subjects such as construction and plant growth.

Supported back lenses can offer manual ISO, shutter speed, focus, white balance, zoom, and exposure controls. The app also lists focus and exposure lock, front and rear cameras, lens switching where supported, configurable intervals, a start delay, optional frame limits, continuous capture, timestamps, and scheduled start and stop.

Velocity Lapse also advertises screen-off capture through an Android foreground service and exports at 8K, 4K, 1080p, 720p, or 480p, subject to device and app limitations. The listing reports that the free version is limited to five projects, says the app has no advertisements, and includes in-app purchases. The listing reports an update dated July 5, 2026; update dates and plan details are volatile and should be rechecked before publication.

Why choose it: It is the clearest fit for construction, plant growth, room renovation, astronomy, and other projects where a scheduled sequence of still frames is more useful than leaving ordinary video recording active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch out for: An 8K option does not make an Android phone an 8K camera. Available resolution, lenses, manual controls, background operation, and thermal performance depend on the specific handset. Screen-off capture can still be interrupted by battery optimization, overheating, manufacturer restrictions, or another app claiming the camera.

2. Framelapse 2: best feature-rich dedicated camera

Framelapse 2 is the best all-round dedicated capture app for users who want many intervalometer controls without separately capturing and assembling every frame. According to the Framelapse 2 Google Play listing, the app can capture video, images, or both and offers custom intervals beginning at 0.1 seconds, automatic recording stop, a recording-duration calculator, frame-rate choices, and playback without a separate rendering phase.

The listing also includes front and rear camera support, SD-card storage support, a self-timer, focus controls, zoom, white-balance adjustment, exposure compensation, exposure and white-balance lock, stabilization, JPEG-quality and MP4-bitrate settings, storage and battery indicators, and speed controls from 1× to 999×. The listing advertises up-to-2160p/4K output where the device supports it, plus volume-button and Bluetooth remote-shutter support. The listing reports a January 12, 2025 update and in-app purchases.

Why choose it: Framelapse 2 covers the common needs of a dedicated camera: interval selection, planned duration, remote triggering, stabilization, output settings, and a black-screen recording mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch out for: User reviews include anecdotal reports of failed or interrupted long recordings. Those reports are not controlled reliability testing, but they justify a short test on the exact Android phone before committing to a six-hour or multi-day project. Device support determines whether 4K, stabilization, lens switching, and other features actually appear.

3. The built-in Camera app: best for simple, reliable capture

The phone’s built-in Camera app is the best first option when the phone already has Time Lapse or Hyperlapse. Native camera software usually has the most direct access to the manufacturer’s lenses, stabilization, image processing, and supported recording modes, and native capture may avoid some third-party permission and background-execution problems.

Check the native camera before downloading anything:

  1. Open the phone’s Camera app.
  2. Check the video modes and the More section.
  3. Look for Time Lapse, Hyperlapse, Motion Lapse, or a similar label.
  4. Check whether the mode exposes speed, resolution, stabilization, or recording-duration settings.
  5. Record a short test and play the result before starting a long project.

There is no universal Android menu path. Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, and other manufacturers use different labels and layouts, while some phones do not offer a native time-lapse mode at all. A current Android time-lapse guide from Wondershare Filmora notes that many modern Android devices include native time-lapse modes and that third-party apps are most useful when advanced controls are needed or the native camera is insufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose it: Native capture is usually the lowest-friction path for a sunset, moving traffic, clouds, or a short walking sequence.

Watch out for: Native apps may not provide custom intervals, frame limits, scheduled starts, still-image sequences, screen-off capture, or manual exposure and focus. Those omissions are the reason to move to Velocity Lapse or Framelapse 2.

4. PicPac Stop Motion & TimeLapse: best for stop motion and photo projects

PicPac is the best niche choice for combining time-lapse with stop motion, audio, and frame-based project assembly. The PicPac Google Play listing says the app can capture time-lapse photos, create time-lapse or stop-motion videos from gallery photos, break existing video into image frames, create hyperlapse projects, use a sound-triggered manual time-lapse mode, and add voice or music.

The listing says projects remain local rather than being uploaded to a server. The free version generates 360p output and adds a watermark. Higher output resolutions, including 480p, 720p, and 1080p, are available through the Pro upgrade, which also enables project duplication and merging. The listing shows ads and in-app purchases and reports a June 24, 2020 update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose it: PicPac makes sense for clay animation, LEGO or craft projects, drawing, simple photo sequences, and creators who want sound or existing gallery images in the same workflow.

Watch out for: The old update date means PicPac should not be presented as the best modern high-end camera. A user review reports a long project terminating during generation; that is anecdotal rather than proof of universal failure, but splitting or backing up very large projects is sensible. The free watermark and 360p ceiling are significant limitations.

5. Filmora Mobile: best for turning existing video into time-lapse

Filmora Mobile is a better choice for editing existing footage than for capturing a true interval time-lapse. If a normal video, screen recording, action-camera clip, or still-image sequence already exists, Filmora can help speed it up and add music, text, transitions, colour adjustments, and social-media formatting. Wondershare’s time-lapse app coverage positions Filmora as a mobile editor while treating Framelapse as the capture-oriented option.

Filmora is appropriate when the creator wants to convert ordinary video into a time-lapse effect or assemble photos after the capture. Filmora does not automatically provide the intervalometer, scheduled start and stop, exposure consistency, screen-off camera operation, battery management, or recovery behaviour required for a 12-hour or multi-day shoot.

Choose Filmora when: the footage already exists and the priority is a polished edit rather than camera control.

6. CapCut: best for social-first time-lapse editing

CapCut is useful for making an existing clip or image sequence look like a social-ready time-lapse. Speed changes, music, captions, effects, and platform-oriented exports make CapCut convenient after capture.

CapCut should not be treated as a specialist long-duration time-lapse camera. CapCut cannot, merely by speeding up a clip, solve interval timing, exposure flicker during capture, battery drain, heat, Android process termination, or unattended camera operation. Use a native camera, Velocity Lapse, Framelapse 2, or another verified capture tool first, then use CapCut if its editing workflow suits the destination.

Check the official CapCut site and the current regional Google Play listing for present export restrictions, subscriptions, and availability before relying on a particular feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. VN Video Editor: best for straightforward sequence assembly

VN Video Editor is a practical option when the still frames or video have already been captured. VN can assemble an image sequence or speed up existing footage, making it useful for a drawing process, a prepared photo set, or a clip recorded by another camera.

VN is not equivalent to an intervalometer. VN does not replace the capture-stage requirements of a stable mount, a chosen interval, exposure and focus locking, external power, heat management, or protection against Android stopping a background camera process. Use VN after capture, particularly when a separate capture app has produced the frames.

Review the official VN site and current Play listing for current plans, export terms, and regional availability.

8. A device-compatible manual camera app: best when your phone exposes the right controls

A verified manual camera app can be the right eighth category for advanced users, but there is no universal Android recommendation that works equally well on every phone. Android camera access varies by manufacturer, camera hardware, Android edition, camera API implementation, and lens. One manual camera app may expose ISO and shutter speed on one handset while omitting a lens, stabilization, or a control on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider this route only after checking the current Google Play listing and confirming that the app supports the exact phone. Look for manual ISO, shutter speed, focus, white balance, exposure lock, interval capture, and still-sequence export if those are essential. Test the desired rear, ultra-wide, or telephoto lens before beginning the actual project.

This category is deliberately qualified rather than naming an old or unverified app merely to fill an eight-item list. A camera app that is popular in an older article, unavailable in the reader’s region, or unable to access the phone’s desired lens is not a dependable recommendation.

What kind of time-lapse are you trying to make?

Interval time-lapse captures individual frames at a chosen interval, while video time-lapse records video and accelerates it afterward. Choosing the correct workflow prevents many failed projects.

Type How it works Best use What matters most
Interval time-lapse Captures a frame every specified number of seconds or minutes Sunsets, traffic, construction, plant growth Interval accuracy, battery, storage, exposure consistency
Video time-lapse Records normal video and speeds it up during editing Short events already being filmed Original video quality, editing speed controls, storage
Photo-sequence time-lapse Saves still images and assembles them later Maximum flexibility and long photolapse projects Storage, frame organization, export stability
Hyperlapse Combines time-lapse timing with camera movement Walking or moving-camera sequences Stabilization, consistent movement, careful shooting
Stop motion Uses deliberately controlled frame-by-frame repositioning Clay, toys, LEGO, crafts, animation Manual frame control and alignment
Long-duration photolapse Captures separate images over hours, days, or weeks Construction and plant growth Scheduling, power, weather, alignment, storage, recovery

How should you choose a time-lapse interval?

Choose a shorter interval for fast movement and a longer interval for slow change. Short intervals create smoother motion but consume more battery and storage; long intervals conserve resources but can make movement appear jumpy.

Subject Starting interval
Fast action or people moving 0.5–2 seconds
Traffic, clouds, shadows, or a busy street 2–5 seconds
Sunset or sunrise 5–10 seconds
Opening flowers or cooking 10–30 seconds
Drawing, painting, or crafting 1–5 seconds
Construction or room renovation 1–10 minutes
Plant growth 15 minutes to several hours

These are starting points rather than universal settings. Subject speed, desired final length, camera startup time, and whether the app drops frames all affect the result.

How do you calculate the final time-lapse length?

Divide the number of captured frames by the final video frame rate to estimate the final duration. The two useful formulas are:

Number of frames = recording duration in seconds ÷ capture interval in seconds
Final video duration in seconds = number of captured frames ÷ final frames per second

For example, capturing one frame every five seconds for 30 minutes produces approximately 360 frames: 1,800 seconds divided by five seconds. At 30 frames per second, 360 frames produces an approximately 12-second video.

Capture interval Frames captured in one hour Final duration at 30 fps
1 second 3,600 120 seconds
2 seconds 1,800 60 seconds
5 seconds 720 24 seconds
10 seconds 360 12 seconds
30 seconds 120 4 seconds
60 seconds 60 2 seconds

The calculations are estimates. Dropped frames, camera startup time, app behaviour, and the selected output frame rate can change the actual result.

How do you record a reliable Android time-lapse?

A reliable time-lapse needs stable mounting, predictable power, enough storage, locked camera settings, and a short test on the exact phone.

Before recording

  1. Choose the subject and estimate how quickly it changes.
  2. Calculate a starting interval and decide whether direct video or still images are more appropriate.
  3. Mount the phone securely, clean the lens, and compose the shot with extra space if cropping or stabilization may be used.
  4. Use the rear camera when image quality matters, then lock focus and exposure when the app supports those controls.
  5. Disable unnecessary notifications and radios, connect external power for long sessions, and confirm available storage.
  6. Check whether the phone becomes hot during a short test.
  7. Play the test result and confirm that the file or image sequence is actually saved.

For a fixed project, a smartphone tripod or mount from a recognised accessory maker is often more valuable than another editing feature. A slight mount movement can ruin every frame even when the app settings are correct.

During recording

  • Do not move the phone or tripod.
  • Keep the lens shaded from direct flare where possible.
  • Lock exposure and white balance when changing brightness is not intentional.
  • For long sessions, monitor battery, storage, temperature, and capture count.
  • Do not assume a black screen proves that recording continues; verify black-screen operation with a short test first.

After recording

  1. Copy or back up the original project before editing.
  2. Keep the original image sequence if the app produced one.
  3. Assemble the sequence at 24, 25, or 30 fps according to the target platform.
  4. Correct speed only after checking for missing frames.
  5. Add music after the visual timing is correct.
  6. Export a short preview before rendering the entire project.
  7. Check for watermarks, resolution caps, unexpected cropping, and export errors.

What can go wrong during a long Android time-lapse?

Long captures fail most often because Android restricts the app, the phone overheats, storage fills, or the export process runs out of resources.

Android stops the app

Battery optimization, aggressive manufacturer power management, screen locking, loss of foreground priority, overheating, or another app using the camera can interrupt capture. Velocity Lapse says it uses a foreground service for screen-off capture, and Framelapse 2 advertises a black-screen mode, but neither claim guarantees identical behaviour on every Android phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before a critical shoot, allow the app to run without battery optimization if the phone provides that setting, keep the phone cool, prevent other camera apps from opening, and test with the screen locked if screen-off capture is required. Exact battery-management labels vary by manufacturer.

The phone overheats

Heat is more likely when the phone records directly to high-resolution video, uses stabilization, sits in direct sun, or charges while recording. Use shade and ventilation, lower the resolution if acceptable, and test the complete phone, cable, charger, and app combination. Charging can increase heat rather than simply extending runtime.

A USB power bank or charger from a recognised power-accessory maker can extend a session, but the power source is not a substitute for thermal testing.

Storage fills or export fails

Still-image capture can consume substantially more storage than direct-to-video recording, and export may require additional temporary space. Free storage before recording, leave room for the rendered file, and export a long project in smaller sections if the app fails near the end.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For phones that support removable storage, verify the supported format and capacity before buying a high-capacity microSD card. A USB-C drive or portable SSD can also help transfer a large image sequence, but sustained write performance and phone compatibility matter.

The sequence flickers

Flicker usually comes from automatic exposure or white balance changing between frames. Lock exposure, white balance, and focus where available; avoid mixed lighting; and do not aim at changing artificial lights unless the flicker is intentional.

Frames are missing

Missing frames produce uneven motion, sudden jumps, an unexpectedly short video, or gaps in construction and plant-growth footage. Check whether the source frames still exist, export in smaller sections, reduce resolution or bitrate, free storage, keep the phone cool, and repeat a short test before restarting the full project.

The desired lens or resolution is missing

Third-party apps may not receive every lens or camera mode exposed by the manufacturer’s native app. Ultra-wide, telephoto, HDR, 4K, stabilization, and high-megapixel still capture can all be device-dependent. Test the exact lens and output mode before planning around them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which older Android time-lapse recommendations should you avoid?

Do not install an older recommendation blindly just because it appears in a search result. App availability, maintenance, pricing, and Android compatibility change, while many ranking pages simply repeat old lists.

Microsoft Hyperlapse Mobile is a common example. Older coverage describes an Android 4.4-era tool, while separate coverage indicates that the wider Hyperlapse app ecosystem has changed and some apps have disappeared from stores. Check the current Google Play listing in the target region before recommending or installing it; an old article is not evidence of current availability. The Wondershare Android guide provides historical context but should not be treated as a current availability guarantee.

Also do not mistake the social photo app named “Lapse” for a time-lapse camera. Similarly named Android apps may be unrelated, in testing, or unavailable. A current AndroidAppTesters discussion about LapseCam illustrates why the name alone is not enough to establish an app’s identity or availability.

Final recommendations

Choose Velocity Lapse for the most capable specialist workflow, Framelapse 2 for a broad dedicated feature set, and the built-in Camera app for quick casual captures. Choose PicPac when stop motion, audio, or local photo projects matter. Choose Filmora Mobile, CapCut, or VN only when the video or still frames already exist and the main task is editing.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

For a multi-day project, prioritise a stable mount, external power, storage headroom, shade, and a short full-workflow test over headline resolution. A reliable 1080p sequence that completes is more useful than an advertised 4K or 8K mode that the phone cannot sustain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a third-party time-lapse app on Android?

You usually do not need a third-party time-lapse app if the phone’s native Camera app includes Time Lapse or Hyperlapse. A third-party app becomes useful for custom intervals, manual exposure and focus, scheduled capture, screen-off operation, still-image sequences, or long-duration monitoring.

What is the best free time-lapse app for Android?

The built-in Camera app is usually the best no-download, low-friction option when the phone includes a native time-lapse mode. Velocity Lapse and Framelapse 2 have free installation signals but also list in-app purchases or feature limits, while PicPac’s free version has 360p output and a watermark.

Can CapCut, Filmora, or VN record a time-lapse for 12 hours?

CapCut, Filmora Mobile, and VN are primarily editors that speed up existing video or assemble existing images. They should not be treated as dedicated intervalometer apps for unattended 12-hour or multi-day camera capture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a time-lapse app stop recording on Android?

Android battery optimization, manufacturer power management, overheating, storage shortages, screen-lock behaviour, loss of foreground priority, or another app using the camera can stop or restrict a long capture. Test the exact phone, app, charger, and screen-off setup before an important project.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with the native Camera app. Move to Velocity Lapse for manual controls, scheduling, and long-duration Photolapse work; choose Framelapse 2 for a feature-rich dedicated camera; use PicPac for stop motion and photo projects; and use Filmora Mobile, CapCut, or VN after the footage already exists.
