Installing SteamOS on my Asus ROG Ally X is an operating-system migration, not a harmless app install: back up Windows, prepare ASUS recovery, and expect device-specific compatibility work. Valve’s official download is labelled the Steam Deck Image, so SteamOS can be attractive on the Ally X without delivering Steam Deck’s factory-integrated support experience.
Valve’s installation guidance, release notes, and issue tracker show improving third-party-handheld support, while ASUS provides separate recovery, firmware, and hardware resources. Image availability and menu labels can change, so verify the current Valve and ASUS Ally X support pages immediately before starting.
Key takeaways
- Installing SteamOS can erase or repartition the Ally X’s factory Windows installation, so a separate backup and a tested recovery plan are essential.
- Valve’s official package is labelled the Steam Deck Image; current Valve support work improves compatibility with the ASUS ROG Ally X but does not make the device a Steam Deck.
- Controls, sleep and wake, TDP controls, speakers, microSD storage, display output, and other hardware features should be tested on the exact SteamOS build you install.
- ASUS recovery, BIOS, firmware, and driver resources remain important after replacing Windows because SteamOS updates and ASUS hardware support are separate layers.
- According to ASUS’s 2024 ROG Ally X specifications, the handheld has 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, an 80Wh battery, a 120Hz display, and an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe slot; those specifications affect setup choices but do not guarantee a particular runtime or performance result.
- Bazzite is an alternative Linux gaming operating system with Ally-specific documentation, not simply another name for Valve’s SteamOS.
1. Why is installing SteamOS on the Ally X a migration rather than an app install?
Installing SteamOS on the ASUS ROG Ally X changes the operating system and may change, repartition, or erase the internal Windows installation depending on the installation target. The correct mindset is operating-system migration: back up irreplaceable files, understand the target disk, and confirm how you will return to a working system before booting the installer.
Valve’s SteamOS Getting Started documentation covers USB installation, UEFI, disk layout, and installation targets. The documentation does not mean every current third-party-handheld image will present an identical partition layout, so do not blindly copy a layout from an old video or another Ally owner.

Choose the commitment level before creating the USB
| Approach | What happens to Windows | Best fit | Main risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean SteamOS installation | Windows may be removed or the internal disk may be repartitioned. | A reader who wants SteamOS as the primary operating system and has a reliable ASUS recovery path. | The largest rollback commitment; a mistake at the disk-selection stage can destroy data. |
| Dual-boot arrangement | Windows is retained if the disks and partitions are configured correctly. | Someone who still needs Windows-only launchers, Game Pass, or ASUS Windows utilities. | More setup complexity and less free internal storage for each operating system. |
| Reversible trial | The reader avoids immediately committing the internal disk, where the current image and setup support that approach. | Someone checking controls, suspend, display output, and game compatibility before wiping Windows. | A trial is not automatically a supported live environment; follow the current Valve instructions rather than assuming every USB image behaves the same way. |
What should you back up before installing?
Back up anything you cannot replace to a separate drive before changing partitions. An optional portable USB-C SSD can hold that backup or recovery material; the drive is preparation equipment, not a requirement to run SteamOS. Do not treat a copy of a few game files as a complete rollback plan if Windows applications, personal files, or other local data still matter.
Bookmark the ASUS ROG Ally X support page and read the current ASUS Cloud Recovery documentation before wiping Windows. ASUS describes Cloud Recovery as a recovery-environment process that can restore the operating system and drivers. Treat that as a recovery route, not as a promise that every future software state or personal file will be preserved.
2. Is the official SteamOS image made specifically for the ROG Ally X?
No. Valve’s official download page labels the available package the Steam Deck Image, while Valve’s support material separately describes improving compatibility for other AMD-powered PC handhelds, including the ASUS ROG Ally X. That means the Ally X uses Valve’s official SteamOS image and evolving compatibility work, not an ASUS factory-integrated Ally X edition of SteamOS.
Use Valve’s current download and SteamOS installation and repair instructions. Avoid a random repackaged ISO, an unofficial mirror, or an old tutorial simply because another owner reported success with it. Image availability, release channels, device support, and menu labels can change.

- 🔌 Versatile Connectivity & Complete Accessories Kit | Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.4 for lag-free online gaming & device pairing; 2 Type-C ports (USB 4 + USB 3.2 Gen2) support data transfer, video output & PD charging.
The practical expectation is close to Valve’s handheld interface and Steam-focused workflow, with more device-specific decisions than a Steam Deck setup. Valve’s SteamOS distribution and support model were built around Steam Deck; compatibility for third-party AMD handhelds is improving, but improvement is not the same as identical factory support.
3. Which Ally X features should you test after installation?
Expect support to improve while still checking the exact build on the exact Ally X. Valve’s SteamOS announcement archive shows continuing work involving third-party handheld controls, TDP control, speaker audio, microSD reliability, firmware, power behaviour, display handling, and input latency. Valve’s public SteamOS issue tracker also contains device-specific reports, so neither universal success nor universal failure is a safe assumption.
For example, a report titled Rog Ally X — The controls stop working after a few minutes was filed on May 23, 2025, and a separate report titled Rog Ally — Steam button and triple dot button sometimes do not work after sleeping while in game was filed on September 8, 2025. These reports document problems encountered by users; they are not proof that every Ally X has the same problem in every current build.
First-boot verification checklist
| Check | What to verify | What to do if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Controls | Steam button, quick-access or triple-dot button, sticks, triggers, bumpers, face buttons, D-pad, and rear controls. | Keep a touchscreen or wired keyboard and mouse available, update SteamOS, and check the current issue tracker before concluding that the hardware is unsupported. |
| Sleep and wake | Put the Ally X to sleep from a game, wake it, and confirm that controls, display, audio, and the game remain usable. | Do not rely on suspend during travel until the installed build wakes reliably; use a full shutdown when necessary. |
| Performance controls | Change the available power or TDP profile and confirm that the selected profile actually takes effect. | Record the build and firmware versions, then check current Valve documentation and reports rather than assuming a profile is working because the menu changed. |
| Audio and wireless | Internal speakers, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. | Test each separately after updating. Keep a wired fallback for initial setup and troubleshooting. |
| Storage | Internal storage and the microSD card, including reading and writing after a reboot. | Do not rely on the card for the only copy of important data until it has survived ordinary use and a restart. |
| Display and docking | Brightness, refresh-rate options, VRR, HDR, internal display behaviour, and external-display output if using a dock. | Test the handheld alone and docked. A display feature that appears in a menu is not necessarily working correctly on every build. |
Update SteamOS before judging compatibility. Testing immediately after installation can confuse first-boot setup issues with problems already addressed by a newer build, while testing without recording the build makes later troubleshooting harder.

4. Why do ASUS recovery, BIOS, and firmware still matter after replacing Windows?
Replacing Windows does not replace the ASUS hardware support path. ASUS maintains drivers and tools on the Ally X support page, while Cloud Recovery provides a separate route for restoring the operating system and drivers. Save those resources before installation because accessing them later may be harder if the new setup has a control, network, or display problem.
Keep these three update and recovery layers separate:
| Layer | Who provides it | What it means for an Ally X running SteamOS |
|---|---|---|
| SteamOS updates | Valve | Updates the operating system and the software layer responsible for the Steam interface and handheld compatibility. |
| BIOS, firmware, and MCU-related hardware updates | ASUS and its hardware support resources | These are not automatically equivalent to SteamOS updates. Check ASUS’s current support tools and instructions for the hardware-specific update path. |
| Factory Windows recovery and ASUS driver restoration | ASUS Cloud Recovery and the Ally X recovery environment | This is the rollback resource for returning toward the ASUS factory operating-system and driver setup; it is not a SteamOS snapshot or a guarantee that every future software state will remain available. |
Do not assume SteamOS includes every ASUS Windows control-panel feature, or that installing SteamOS automatically installs every ASUS firmware utility. Record the current BIOS and firmware situation, save recovery information, and decide whether you are comfortable finding an ASUS-specific update path without Windows.

5. How do the Ally X’s hardware specifications change the setup decision?
The Ally X is powerful enough to make SteamOS appealing, but its hardware is not identical to Steam Deck hardware. According to ASUS’s 2024 ROG Ally X RC72LA specifications, the handheld uses an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, an 80Wh battery, a 120Hz display, M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage, and USB-C power and connectivity.

| Ally X specification | Why it matters when moving to SteamOS | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme | It is an AMD handheld covered by Valve’s expanding third-party compatibility work. | Processor compatibility alone does not prove that every button, power profile, sleep state, or display feature works. |
| 24GB LPDDR5X memory | Memory allocation differs from the fixed hardware assumptions of a Steam Deck, so copying Steam Deck tuning advice blindly is unwise. | More memory does not guarantee a specific frame rate or eliminate software compatibility issues. |
| 80Wh battery | The larger battery makes power-profile and display choices especially relevant when comparing handheld use. | Battery capacity does not guarantee a particular SteamOS runtime. Runtime depends on power limits, display settings, game load, drivers, and software version. |
| 120Hz display | Refresh-rate, VRR, HDR, brightness, and power choices should be tested instead of copied from Steam Deck settings. | A 120Hz panel does not mean every game will run at 120 frames per second. |
| M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage | The format makes a future storage replacement a plausible planning option, subject to the exact drive and device requirements. | Any M.2 2280 SSD is not guaranteed to fit, work, or deliver the same result in every configuration. |
| USB-C power and connectivity | Docks, chargers, external displays, input devices, and external storage can make installation and recovery easier. | A dock or charger is not automatically compatible with every display, power, or peripheral combination. |
Plan around the Ally X’s actual hardware rather than treating the Ally X as a larger Steam Deck. Do not promise a battery-life increase, temperature result, TDP outcome, or frame rate without controlled testing that names the game, SteamOS build, firmware, power profile, and display settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Should you compare Bazzite before wiping Windows?
Yes. Bazzite is an alternative Linux gaming operating system with its own ASUS Ally and Ally X documentation, update process, and known issues. Bazzite’s project site describes a gaming-focused operating system with Steam preinstalled and handheld-oriented tools, but Bazzite is not Valve’s official SteamOS.
| Option | What it is | Why choose it | What you must accept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official SteamOS | Valve’s SteamOS distribution and current third-party handheld compatibility work. | The closest route to Valve’s own Steam gaming interface and SteamOS support direction. | The official image is labelled for Steam Deck, and Ally X behaviour remains build- and device-dependent. |
| Bazzite | An independent Linux gaming operating system with ASUS handheld documentation. | Ally-specific configuration guidance, desktop features, Steam preinstallation, and additional handheld-oriented tools. | Bazzite has its own documentation, update process, and known issues. It is not SteamOS with a different name. |
| Windows retained | The ASUS factory operating system remains available, either as the primary system or alongside another setup. | Useful when Windows-specific launchers, Game Pass, vendor utilities, or a familiar ASUS recovery path are priorities. | You give up the simplest clean SteamOS-only setup and may need to manage more than one operating system. |
There is no universal winner between official SteamOS and Bazzite on an Ally X. A fair comparison requires the same Ally X hardware, firmware, game set, power profiles, and display settings. If Windows remains important, a dual-boot or otherwise reversible trial can reduce the cost of discovering that a particular launcher or hardware feature is still more convenient in Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat is the least-risk order for the installation?
- Back up personal files. Copy irreplaceable files to a separate drive and verify that the files open from the backup.
- Confirm recovery. Bookmark the ASUS Cloud Recovery FAQ, understand the Ally X recovery environment, and do not start if you have no credible rollback path.
- Record the current state. Note the current BIOS, firmware, Windows recovery situation, and any ASUS utilities you may need later.
- Read current Valve instructions. Use the current official SteamOS image and the Valve installation documentation, not an old video’s assumed menus or partition layout.
- Create reliable USB media. Have the installation USB ready, along with a USB keyboard, mouse, touchscreen fallback, or USB-C dock in case on-device controls are not fully functional during setup.
- Choose the disk path deliberately. Decide between a clean installation, dual boot, or a reversible trial before entering the installer. Read the target-disk confirmation carefully.
- Update before judging. After first boot, update SteamOS, then test controls, sleep and wake, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, speakers, microSD storage, display features, external output, and performance controls.
The exact installer screens, release channel, supported layouts, and device behaviour can change. The research for this article was timestamped August 13, 2026 UTC; verify Valve’s and ASUS’s current pages immediately before publication or installation.

What should you do if the first boot is unreliable?
If controls fail, connect a wired keyboard or mouse, use the touchscreen where possible, and update SteamOS before troubleshooting further. If sleep and wake fail, avoid relying on suspend until the issue is resolved. If a dock, external display, microSD card, speaker, or power profile behaves incorrectly, test the handheld in a simpler configuration and compare the result with the current Valve announcements and issue tracker.
If the Ally X no longer meets your needs without Windows, stop making further disk changes and use the recovery plan you prepared. ASUS Cloud Recovery and the Ally X support page are the relevant ASUS resources; Valve’s SteamOS repair instructions are the relevant Valve resource. Recovery is far easier when the backup, USB media, and support links were prepared before the operating-system change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ASUS Cloud Recovery restore SteamOS?
No. ASUS Cloud Recovery should be treated as the Ally X’s factory operating-system and driver recovery route, not as a snapshot that restores SteamOS. Read the current ASUS Cloud Recovery documentation before replacing Windows.
Does the Ally X’s 80Wh battery guarantee longer battery life in SteamOS?
No. An 80Wh battery does not guarantee a particular SteamOS runtime. Runtime depends on power limits, display settings, game load, drivers, and software version, so the installed build and your settings must be tested.
Can any M.2 2280 NVMe SSD be used in the ROG Ally X?
No. ASUS lists an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage format for the 2024 ROG Ally X, but that does not guarantee that every M.2 2280 SSD will fit or work in every configuration. Check the exact device and drive requirements before buying.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: SteamOS can be an appealing way to get a Steam-focused handheld interface on the ASUS ROG Ally X, but the Ally X does not become a Steam Deck. Install only after backing up Windows and preparing ASUS recovery, use Valve’s current image and instructions, test every important hardware feature on the installed build, and compare Bazzite or a reversible setup if Windows still matters.
