No single office suite is the best replacement for Microsoft Office on Linux. The right choice depends on what matters most to you: an open-source licence, Word- and Excel-style workflows, online co-editing, a smaller core toolset, or Microsoft’s own apps in a browser. The six options below cover that range. Five are Linux desktop suites. The sixth, Microsoft 365 for the web, runs in a browser and is included because it is the most direct route to Microsoft’s own applications, not because it is a native Linux suite.

Vendor pages were checked in October 2026. Compatibility claims below are the publishers’ own statements, not results from an independent test, so treat them as starting points and verify them with your own files.

The six options at a glance

  • LibreOffice: the broadest open-source desktop suite on this list.
  • ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors: strongest stated focus on Office-format exchange and cloud co-editing.
  • WPS Office: a compact, familiar Writer, Spreadsheet and Presentation set with DEB and RPM packages.
  • FreeOffice: a three-application suite from SoftMaker, free for personal and business use.
  • Calligra Suite: office tools from the KDE project, bundled with graphics, database and project-planning applications.
  • Microsoft 365 for the web: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneDrive in a browser, with no desktop installation.

The six picks and why each one earns a place

1. LibreOffice: the open-source all-rounder

The Document Foundation describes LibreOffice as open source and presents six applications: Writer for documents, Calc for spreadsheets, Impress for presentations, Draw for vector graphics, Base for databases and Math for formulas. If you want a full desktop suite without a licence fee and you are comfortable with a slightly different interface from Microsoft’s, this is the default starting point. Its official site, libreoffice.org, also links to a guide book for new users.

The project’s own tagline puts the philosophy plainly: “LibreOffice is an open source office suite created by you, for you.”

2. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors: built around Office-format exchange

ONLYOFFICE publishes desktop editors for Linux, Windows and macOS. They cover documents, spreadsheets, presentations, fillable forms and PDF files. The publisher lists DOCX, ODT, XLSX, ODS, CSV, PPTX and ODP among supported formats, which makes it a sensible shortlist candidate if your work moves between Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and OpenDocument files. The editors can also connect to cloud platforms such as Nextcloud, ownCloud, Seafile and Moodle for real-time collaboration. The format support is the vendor’s stated focus; it has not been independently measured, so it does not guarantee that every document will look identical. See ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors.

3. WPS Office: a compact, familiar suite

WPS’s Linux page offers DEB and RPM packages, so it installs on Debian-based and Red Hat-family distributions, and describes Writer, Spreadsheet and Presentation as its core applications. The ribbon-style layout will feel familiar if you have used Microsoft Office. The 2026 comparison published by WPS also describes offline editing and a proprietary licence. Because WPS wrote that comparison, read its rankings as the vendor’s own view. See WPS Office for Linux and the WPS comparison of free office suites for Linux.

4. FreeOffice: a straightforward three-application suite

SoftMaker describes FreeOffice as free for personal and business use. It includes a word processor, a spreadsheet program and a presentation program, which the publisher says are designed to work with their Microsoft Office counterparts. The comparison page identifies these as TextMaker, PlanMaker and Presentations, and describes the suite as proprietary and usable offline. If you do not need databases, drawing tools or a large feature set, a three-application suite is easier to learn. Supported file formats do not mean that every advanced layout, macro or feature transfers unchanged. See FreeOffice by SoftMaker.

5. Calligra Suite: office tools for KDE users

The KDE project describes Words for documents, Stage for presentations, Sheets for spreadsheets, Karbon for vector drawing, KEXI for database creation and Plan for project planning. That mix is wider than a Word, Excel and PowerPoint replacement, and it suits KDE desktop users who also want drawing, database or project tools in the same family. The official page notes that Calligra 4.0 was announced on 27 August 2024. It does not give a later release date, so check the project site for the current version before you install. See calligra.org.

6. Microsoft 365 for the web: Microsoft’s own apps in a browser

The 2026 WPS comparison lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneDrive as browser-based tools on Linux and says they need no desktop software installation. This is the most direct route to Microsoft’s own applications in this list. It is a browser service rather than a Linux application, so it depends on a network connection and on your Microsoft account. The comparison notes web and offline limitations, but the sources reviewed do not spell out which features apply to your plan. Check Microsoft’s current documentation for what your account supports before you rely on it for offline work.

Opening Office files without losing content

The format question matters more than the brand name. Microsoft’s support documentation says that “Not all applications can read all file formats; and in some cases, an application may only be able to read parts of the file.” It also notes that Microsoft Office and OpenOffice-based suites do not implement every feature identically, so changes or content loss can occur when you move files between them. That applies to every option in this list, including the ones that advertise broad format support.

SoftMaker Office Standard 2021 (5 users) for Windows, Mac and Linux [PC/Mac Download]
  • Alternative office suite: Word processor TextMaker, Spreadsheet program PlanMaker, Presentation software Presentations, Automation tool BasicMaker
  • Licensed for 5 users / household or 1 user / organization, perpetual lifetime license for Windows, Mac and Linux
  • User interface with modern ribbons or classical menus
  • Compatible with all modern Microsoft Office documents including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX
  • The complete office suite can be installed on a USB flash and used without installation

Microsoft recommends the Open XML formats by default. In its words, “The Open XML format (.docx/.xlsx/.pptx) is the default format in all supported versions of Microsoft Office and, unless you have a specific reason to use a different format, it’s the format we recommend using for your Office files.” Microsoft Learn’s file format reference is the place to check specific variants. Macro-enabled files, such as DOCM and XLSM, need particular care because macro behaviour is not interchangeable across suites.

Before you move a shared workflow, use this sequence:

  • Linux Mint - Powerful Ubuntu and Debian Software design is perfect for computer science students and professionals, software developers, coders, geeks and nerds, Artificial Intelligence AI software programmers and fans of the elegant, popular Linux OS.
  • Linux Mint is a modern operating system which is both powerful and easy to use. It works out of the box, with full multimedia support and is extremely simple to use. Linux Mint is based on Debian and Ubuntu. Linux Mint requires very little maintenance.
  • Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
  1. Keep an untouched copy of every original file, and store it somewhere you will not overwrite.
  2. Collect a representative set: a long report, a spreadsheet with formulas, a deck with embedded media, and any macro-enabled file you use.
  3. Open each copy in the candidate suite and save a second copy in DOCX, XLSX or PPTX.
  4. Check page breaks, fonts, table layout, formula results, macros, embedded objects, charts and presentation media against the original.
  5. Only change the shared workflow after the representative set passes. If a file fails, keep it in its original format for that task.

This is a prudent process based on Microsoft’s documented format differences. It is not a test result for any specific suite, so the outcome will depend on your documents.

Which one to choose

  • You want a complete, open-source desktop suite: start with LibreOffice.
  • You exchange Word, Excel and PowerPoint files often and collaborate through a cloud platform: test ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors first.
  • You want a familiar ribbon layout and DEB or RPM packages: try WPS Office, and read its licence terms before deploying it widely.
  • You need only word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, and you accept a proprietary licence: FreeOffice is the simplest core set.
  • You use KDE and want office tools with drawing, database or project planning in one family: Calligra fits, after you confirm the current release.
  • You need Microsoft’s own apps and can work online: Microsoft 365 for the web is the closest match to Microsoft’s interface.

If your work depends on complex macros, tightly controlled layouts or shared templates, run the file test above on those documents before committing to any option.
