If Microsoft Edge freezes, crashes, or will not open, try these five fixes in order: reduce browser and system load, restart Edge and Windows, update Edge, clear cached files if the browser opens, and use Windows’ Repair option. If only one website is affected, check whether the site or your network is the problem before repairing the browser.

First, check whether the problem is Edge or one website

If Edge stops responding on just one page, open that website in another browser. If it fails there too, the cause may be the website or your network—not Edge. Microsoft recommends restarting your modem and router; if the site still will not load, contact the website owner. An Edge repair cannot make an unavailable website work.

If Edge itself freezes across multiple sites, crashes, or will not open, work through the fixes below from least to most disruptive.

1. Free up memory and browser resources

Many open tabs, extensions, downloads, and other running programs can put pressure on your computer’s memory. Close tabs you are not using, pause or finish unnecessary downloads, and close other apps. Disable or remove extensions you do not need, then reload the page.

Microsoft outlines these steps in its Edge troubleshooting guidance. This is a sensible first step because it does not require changing browser data or Windows settings.

2. Restart Edge, then restart Windows

Close Edge completely and open it again. If the browser remains unresponsive or the problem returns, restart the computer and try Edge once Windows starts. A restart can clear a process that is stuck; it does not address a persistent website or network outage.

3. Install an available Edge update

If Edge opens, go to Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Allow Edge to check for updates and apply any update offered. Microsoft recommends checking for updates when Edge crashes or opens but stops working.

If Edge will not stay open long enough to reach Settings, skip this step for now and continue to the Windows repair option.

4. Clear cached files if Edge opens

A damaged or outdated cache can sometimes cause a page to display incorrectly. If the issue is a display problem, clear the cache rather than deleting more browsing information than necessary.

  1. In Edge, open History > Open history page > Delete browsing data.
  2. Set the time range to All time.
  3. Select Cached images and files. Select Browsing history only if you also intend to remove it.
  4. Choose the option to clear the selected data, then reload the affected page.

Clearing all browsing data is a broader action than clearing cached images and files. Review the selections carefully before confirming, especially if you want to retain browsing history or other saved information. Microsoft notes that clearing cached files can sometimes resolve page display issues.

5. Repair Microsoft Edge in Windows Settings

Use Windows’ built-in Repair option if the earlier steps have not helped. Microsoft says Repair requires an internet connection and administrator rights, and that this Edge-specific action should not affect browser data or settings.

  1. Close Edge for all users who are signed in to the computer.
  2. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft Edge, select its More options, then choose Modify.
  4. Approve the administrator prompt if one appears, then choose Repair and follow the on-screen instructions.

If Modify is missing, the Edge installation may be managed by your organization. Contact your administrator rather than trying to bypass the device’s management settings. Microsoft’s steps are in its Edge troubleshooting article.

If Edge still does not respond

Check security software and scan the device

Microsoft recommends scanning the device for malware and checking that third-party security software is up to date. Do not routinely turn off security protection to troubleshoot a frozen browser.

Know what Windows Reset means

Windows app guidance describes Reset as a possible option when Repair is unavailable or does not work, but Reset is separate from Edge’s Repair action. Its availability and effects can differ, so do not assume it preserves Edge data or settings. See Microsoft’s guidance on repairing apps and programs in Windows before using a reset option.

For a pop-up that has frozen Edge

Microsoft has a separate article on closing a pop-up when Edge is not responding: How to close a pop-up window if Microsoft Edge isn’t responding. Follow that article’s instructions for this specific situation rather than trying an unverified keyboard shortcut.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Since that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. This is separate from the Edge troubleshooting steps above; see Microsoft’s Windows support and recovery information.
