The most useful PS5 “router settings” are practical priorities, not a magic low-ping preset: connect the console by Ethernet when possible, place it close to the access point when using Wi-Fi, keep router firmware current, change port rules only for a matching connection error, and leave advanced IP, DNS, MTU and proxy values conventional unless you are troubleshooting with your ISP. PlayStation’s own guidance supports that order. It does not establish a universal latency improvement from a particular DNS server, Wi-Fi band, channel, QoS rule or MTU value.
What are the top five router settings for PS5 gaming?
Use this priority order: connection medium first, wireless placement second, firmware maintenance third, symptom-specific port filtering fourth, and advanced network values last. Some are router-side checks and some are connection choices rather than named PS5 toggles.

Ethernet is the best first choice when a cable can reach the console. PlayStation includes wired connection in its troubleshooting advice because a direct LAN link removes the wireless hop and the obstructions or radio interference that affect it.

- Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into an available LAN port on the router and the other end into the PS5’s network port.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose Set Up Wired LAN, then select Connect.
- Leave the console’s IP, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU and proxy entries at their ordinary automatic or default choices unless your ISP or network administrator gives you a specific value for a diagnosed problem.
The cable itself is the relevant purchase if your present layout cannot reach the console; the cited guidance does not identify a particular cable category as a way to lower latency. Route the cable where it will not be pinched, walked on or sharply bent, and use a free router LAN socket rather than changing unrelated wireless settings.
When is wired LAN not the right practical choice?
A cable may be difficult to run across rooms, through floors or around furniture. In that case, use Wi-Fi and improve the physical path before experimenting with advanced values. A wired connection is a priority, not a requirement for every home.
Should I use wired or Wi-Fi for PS5 gaming?
Choose wired LAN when reliable cable routing is practical; choose Wi-Fi when convenience or room layout makes Ethernet unreasonable. The official material provides no benchmark that ranks a particular Wi-Fi band, channel or router brand, so do not treat those as universal requirements.

How do I set up Wi-Fi on PS5?
- Go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select the appropriate saved wireless network and follow the on-screen connection prompts.
- If the connection is unreliable, move the console closer to the router and remove objects that block the wireless path.
Do not claim that a specific band or channel is mandatory based on this guidance. If moving the console helps, the physical placement was a more relevant change than an unverified custom value.
How do I update router firmware for PS5 connection problems?
Use the update process supplied by your router maker or ISP. PlayStation lists current router firmware as a troubleshooting step for certain connection errors, but that recommendation is not proof that every firmware update will reduce gaming latency.

- Identify whether your internet provider supplied the router or whether you manage it yourself.
- Open the router maker’s app or administration page and look for a firmware, software or system-update section. The label and location vary by device.
- Read the vendor’s release notes and backup instructions if offered, then apply the update exactly as directed.
- Allow the router to finish restarting before reconnecting the PS5. Do not interrupt power during the installation.
- Retry the connection that produced the error. If the ISP controls updates, ask its support team to confirm the device is current.
Do not substitute a downloaded file from an unrelated model or region. Router firmware is model-specific, and the ISP may restrict customer access to the update controls.
Which ports should I open for a PS5?
Open or forward ports only when a relevant PlayStation connection error remains after basic wired, placement and firmware checks. PlayStation’s instructions for error NW-102315-2 list the following ports to try and tell users to ask their ISP about router changes; they are troubleshooting values, not a promise of lower ping.

What is the safe way to handle port forwarding?
- Record the exact PS5 error code and the time it occurs. Do not open ports merely because another player or forum recommends them.
- Check whether the router or ISP manages port forwarding. If it is managed equipment, contact the ISP rather than guessing at a menu or rule.
- Use the protocol and ranges published for the matching PlayStation error, and apply the narrowest rule your router permits.
- Test the original activity again. If the error remains, remove an unnecessary rule and ask the ISP or PlayStation Support for the next diagnostic step.
Port forwarding changes how unsolicited traffic reaches a device, so broad or permanent rules can create avoidable exposure. Keep a record of any change so it can be reversed.
What PS5 advanced network settings should I change?
Normally, none. The PS5 setup interface exposes IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU and proxy fields, plus Multi-Link Operation on supported CFI-7000 model-group consoles, but PlayStation cautions people unfamiliar with these options to consult their ISP or network administrator.

IP address and DHCP host name
These identify the console on the local network and help it obtain an address from the router. Leave them automatic unless your network administrator has assigned a specific address or host name and can document why it is needed.

DNS
DNS values resolve service names; the reviewed PlayStation pages do not establish that replacing the router’s DNS provider produces lower in-game latency. A custom DNS entry should therefore be a troubleshooting choice with a clear reason, not a universal gaming optimization.
MTU
MTU controls packet size. No tested value or universal PS5 gaming number is provided here, so changing it on a guess can create a new connectivity problem. Restore the default when a custom value does not solve the diagnosed issue.
Proxy
A proxy belongs in the setup only when your network requires one. Enabling an arbitrary proxy adds another dependency instead of improving a normal home connection.
Multi-Link Operation
PlayStation lists Multi-Link Operation for supported CFI-7000 model-group consoles. Availability also depends on the network equipment, so do not assume that seeing the option means your router supports it; ask the equipment administrator before changing it.

IPv6
PS5 supports IPv6 but does not support an IPv6-only connection. A home service that offers only IPv6 cannot be treated as equivalent to a normal dual-protocol or IPv4-capable connection for this console.
How can I tell whether multiple NAT routers are causing the problem?
Multiple NAT routers mean that more than one device in the path is translating addresses, commonly an ISP gateway plus a separate home router. When troubleshooting error NW-102468-1, PlayStation advises removing multiple NAT routers rather than stacking them.
- Draw the path from the wall or modem to the ISP gateway, then to any additional router, mesh system or access point.
- Check each device’s administration page for whether it is routing or merely operating as an access point. Menus and terminology vary by vendor.
- Ask the ISP which device should perform routing. Follow its supported procedure to eliminate the extra NAT layer; do not change a managed gateway blindly.
- Reconnect the PS5 and retry the activity that produced the error.
The relevant PlayStation Support guidance for NW-102468-1 is error-specific. A second router is not automatically wrong: it becomes a suspect when the topology and symptoms match the troubleshooting case.
What should I avoid changing for PS5 gaming?
Avoid treating an advanced setting as a guaranteed performance switch. The reviewed official pages do not provide comparative tests for QoS, a particular Wi-Fi band or channel, a DNS provider, custom MTU values, router brands or any numeric ping reduction.

What is the most efficient order for troubleshooting?
Work from the least invasive change to the most conditional one. This avoids opening ports or editing packet settings before you know whether the issue is simply the wireless path or an outdated router.

- If you must use Wi-Fi, move the console nearer the router and clear obstructions.
- Confirm that the router’s firmware is current through the maker or ISP.
- Map the network for an extra NAT router and follow the ISP-supported way to remove the redundant routing layer if the topology matches the relevant error.
- Only then consult the exact PlayStation error page and your ISP about its listed ports or an advanced setting.
This sequence separates general connection priorities from symptom-specific remedies. It also gives support staff a useful record of what you changed and what happened afterward.
What can these five priorities realistically improve?
They can remove common causes of failed or unstable connections: a weak wireless path, an outdated router implementation, an unnecessary NAT layer or a blocked service path associated with a documented error. They cannot guarantee a particular ping, frame rate or matchmaking result, because those also depend on the game service, internet route and other traffic outside the PS5’s local settings.
Use the smallest change that addresses the observed symptom, keep the router’s normal defaults when there is no diagnosis, and reverse a change that does not help. Do I need to replace my router for PS5 gaming?
