If you want a couch-friendly way to play your Steam and other PC games on Linux, the best fit depends on whether you want a TV box or a handheld. Valve’s Steam Machine is the closest living-room alternative to a PS5; the Steam Deck OLED is the simplest handheld; and an AMD mini PC running Bazzite can cost less if you accept setup work. None is a full PS5 replacement: Linux does not run every PC game, and PlayStation exclusives remain a separate reason to own Sony’s console.

Can a PS5 run Linux or Steam games?
No. Sony presents the PS5 as a PlayStation console for PlayStation games; it does not advertise Linux, Steam, Proton, or a general-purpose desktop environment. If running a PC library on Linux is a requirement, a PS5 cannot do that job.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe PS5 still has meaningful advantages for someone who wants Sony’s console experience: Sony lists a high-speed SSD, DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, Tempest 3D Audio, 4K/HDR, support for up to 120 Hz, ray tracing, and PS4 backward compatibility. PlayStation Direct listed the 1 TB disc model at $649 in 2026, including a DualSense controller, HDMI cable, and Astro’s Playroom; the listing showed it as currently unavailable when checked. Sony’s pages give inconsistent totals for compatible PS4 games, so a single catalog count is not reliable.

Which PS5 alternative is best for a living room?
The Steam Machine is the closest match if you want a small PC that boots into a controller-first TV interface and can also open a full Linux desktop. An AMD mini PC running Bazzite is the lower-cost, more configurable route, but it is not a Valve-certified SteamOS appliance.
Steam Machine: the closest console-like Linux PC
Valve’s Steam Machine runs SteamOS and is designed to connect to a television while retaining the flexibility of a PC. In its review of a unit, The Verge described the hardware as small, cool, and quiet, with games playable on a TV without a mouse and keyboard. SteamOS also offers a desktop mode for tasks such as browsing files, using a keyboard and mouse, or running other launchers.

The 2 TB model costs $1,349, or $1,428 with the controller; Valve’s quoted bundle includes red fabric and walnut faceplates. These are 2026 US prices, checked Nov 2026. Valve’s allocation sign-up and first-shipment dates were in June 2026; current stock and purchasing availability are not established here, so check Valve’s store before planning around a delivery date.
That starting price is $400 more than the $649 PS5 price listed by PlayStation Direct. The premium buys an open PC platform and SteamOS rather than a clear graphics-performance win. The Verge’s review found PS5-class performance, not a significant boost over PS5, and reported sharper images on the PS5 in Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered in the games it examined.
Valve’s own specification sheet was not available in the sources cited for the launch coverage. Secondary reporting consistently describes a Zen 4 six-core/12-thread CPU, a discrete RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units, and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. Treat those hardware details as secondary reporting rather than a first-party specification.
The Verge’s review offers examples of what that performance class looked like on its review unit, using a VRR television and a 40 fps minimum target: Indiana Jones and Returnal at 1440p medium, Forza Horizon 6 at 1440p high, Cyberpunk 2077 at upscaled 4K high, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider at native 4K medium. These are settings from that review, not a promise that every game will run at the same resolution or frame rate. The system defaults to 1080p output until the user changes it, and some games need manual settings adjustments.

Valve told the publication that FSR 4 was coming and a driver update should improve ray tracing by as much as 20% in some games; those statements are prospective and game-dependent, not measured guarantees.
SteamOS 3.9.5, reported as stable on Oct. 24, 2026, included Steam Machine-specific fixes for Remote Play when booting without a display, firmware updates, frame limiting during streaming to Steam Frame, and STAR WARS: Galactic Racer after suspend. AMD mini PC: more flexibility, more setup
A mini PC with AMD graphics can make a compact TV gaming system for less than a Steam Machine, but choosing a capable model matters. A 780M- or 890M-class integrated GPU is best viewed as a 1080p Low–Medium option for many demanding games, rather than an equivalent to a discrete GPU. A Radeon 8060S system is a much faster integrated-graphics tier, but costs considerably more.
ComputingForGeeks’ October 2026 shortlist named the Beelink SER9 Pro with Radeon 780M as a value 1080p choice, the Minisforum UM890 Pro with 780M as an upgradeable option, the Minisforum AI X1 Pro-370 with Radeon 890M as a faster integrated-graphics choice, and the GMKtec EVO-X2 with Radeon 8060S as a Steam Machine-class option. Its approximate listed prices were about $700, $990, $1,230, and $2,200 respectively. Those were Amazon listing prices cited by that publication, not stable manufacturer prices; check current listings and confirm the exact CPU, memory, and storage configuration before buying.

The cited performance figures show why these devices should not be treated as interchangeable. Notebookcheck recorded 34.3 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Medium on a Beelink SER9 Pro with 780M graphics. In a different system, Club386 recorded 66.8 fps at 1080p High on an 8060S in an MS-S1 Max configured at 130 W. The tests used different systems and conditions, so they are examples of each graphics tier, not a direct head-to-head comparison. ComputingForGeeks also cited a Phoronix Linux result that placed the 890M roughly 25% ahead of a 780M-class chip.
Integrated graphics use system RAM as graphics memory. Avoid the smallest memory configuration if it is soldered and cannot be upgraded; 16 GB is a practical floor and 32 GB gives more headroom for gaming and desktop use. The Minisforum models cited above include OCuLink, which can provide an external-GPU upgrade path. Mini PCs may also need a Pulse-Eight USB-CEC adapter, listed at about $57, to add the TV wake behavior that the Steam Machine includes.
Bazzite is generally the practical SteamOS-like operating system for a third-party mini PC. Valve opened SteamOS 3.8 to living-room PC installations in June 2026, but custom installs are AMD-GPU-only, require Secure Boot to be off, and are handled through a test channel. A random mini PC is not thereby an officially Powered by SteamOS device.
Which handheld runs the most Steam games?
There is no single answer: Linux handhelds can run a large Steam catalog through Proton, but Windows handhelds remain the safer choice for games blocked by Linux anti-cheat support. For a handheld that requires little setup, choose the Steam Deck OLED or the SteamOS Legion Go S; for more performance and compatibility options, consider a Windows handheld with Bazzite or stay on Windows.
Steam Deck OLED: easiest Linux handheld
The Steam Deck OLED is Valve’s reference Linux handheld. It runs SteamOS 3, based on Arch Linux, with KDE Plasma available in desktop mode. The 512 GB version costs $789 and the 1 TB version costs $949 in Valve’s US store, checked Nov 2026. Valve notes that the OLED model may be intermittently out of stock in some regions because of memory and storage shortages. Certified refurbished units can save up to 20% and include a one-year warranty, when available.
Both OLED configurations use a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display with refresh rates up to 90 Hz, a 50 Wh battery, and 16 GB of LPDDR5-6400 RAM. Valve estimates battery life at 3–12 hours depending on content. The 512 GB model weighs about 640 g; the 1 TB model adds anti-glare etched glass, an exclusive startup movie, and a keyboard theme. The APU is a 6 nm AMD design with a four-core/eight-thread Zen 2 CPU and an eight-CU RDNA 2 GPU, rated at 4–15 W. USB-C DisplayPort supports up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz.
Docking makes it usable as a TV-connected PC. Valve’s Docking Station costs $79, checked Nov 2026, and provides external display, wired networking, USB, and power connections. A dock does not make the Deck’s graphics hardware faster; expect to choose game resolution and settings with its handheld-class APU in mind.

Legion Go S SteamOS: bigger screen, official third-party support
The Lenovo Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS is the only third-party handheld on Valve’s Powered by SteamOS list alongside the Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame. Its Ryzen Z2 Go has four CPU cores and eight threads, with 16 GB of LPDDR5X-6400 memory and a 512 GB M.2 2242 SSD. The 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS screen supports 120 Hz and variable refresh rate; the battery is 55.5 Wh, the device weighs about 740 g, and it has two USB4 ports plus a microSD slot.

ComputingForGeeks reported Amazon US street prices around $800–$830 for the SteamOS edition in October 2026. That is a late-October listing range, not a fixed price; check the current listing. The display is larger and sharper than the Deck’s, but the Z2 Go is closer to Deck-class performance than to the faster Z2 Extreme handhelds. In recent demanding games, upscaling may be needed rather than rendering natively at 1200p. A used Windows Z2 Go 16 GB/512 GB unit can be another starting point for installing Valve’s SteamOS recovery image, but it is not the same as buying the officially supported SteamOS edition.
ROG Xbox Ally family: Windows compatibility and Linux options
The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X ship with Windows 11. Valve added controller, TDP, and audio support for the ROG Xbox Ally series in SteamOS notes, and Bazzite has supported the family since release 43. An owner can choose a Linux installation, but that involves more setup than buying a Deck or the SteamOS Legion Go S.
The ROG Xbox Ally costs $599.99 from ASUS and has a Ryzen Z2 A four-core/eight-thread chip, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, a 7-inch 1080p 120 Hz display, a 60 Wh battery, and a weight of about 670 g. The ROG Xbox Ally X costs $999.99 from ASUS and upgrades to a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme eight-core/16-thread chip, 24 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, and an 80 Wh battery; it weighs about 715 g. Amazon import listings for the X were around $1,150 in the cited October coverage, but import listings and prices can vary.
A 2025 Cyber Dopamine test, reported by Notebookcheck, found 47 fps on Windows 11 and 62 fps on Bazzite in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II on an Ally X at 17 W. At 13 W, the result was 35 versus 37 fps; Hogwarts Legacy at 13 W was 38 versus 37 fps. These are results from one creator, two games, and specific power limits—not evidence that Bazzite is universally faster than Windows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Bazzite’s Ally-class notes identify several details to check before switching: set UEFI VRAM to 4 or 8 GB before installing, because the setting can affect performance; TDP may remain stuck after changing the charger while the device is in standby; speakers need both devices’ levels matched; and the fingerprint reader may not work. If you rely on Windows-only launchers or a title’s anti-cheat, keeping Windows or arranging a dual boot can be more useful than optimizing for a Linux-only interface.
Other handhelds for particular needs
The Legion Go 2 is a large-screen, high-performance option rather than a light portable. It has an 8.8-inch 1920×1200 OLED display at 144 Hz, detachable controllers, and configurations up to a Z2 Extreme processor, 32 GB RAM, and a 74 Wh battery; the cited configuration weighs about 920 g. SteamOS updates in June added controller and firmware support, while October notes added preliminary brightness support and a Forza Horizon 6 crash fix. A ComputingForGeeks Amazon listing was about $1,350 for a Z2, 16 GB, 1 TB model; that is a listing price, not a fixed manufacturer price. Its kickstand and detachable controllers make tabletop play a natural use, but its size is a trade-off for handheld comfort.
The GPD Win 5, with Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and 40 compute units, was listed at about $2,450 and is an enthusiast purchase rather than a value PS5 alternative. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is positioned as a Windows performance handheld in some roundups; Linux support is not the reason to choose it for this use case. The ROG Xbox Ally X20, a newer 7.4-inch OLED model that appeared in Japan in October 2026, was still in Bazzite testing as of Oct. 23, with RGB, fan, and gyro work unfinished. For newly launched handhelds, Windows is the lower-risk choice until Linux support is established.
What do handheld performance estimates say?
FPSVibe’s Oct. 18, 2026 model estimates provide a rough way to compare handheld performance, not a substitute for game-specific testing. The model fitted published reviews, estimated 800p Medium performance on battery in each device’s top mode, and reported a median error of about 12% on held-out reviews.

The same model estimated Cyberpunk 2077 at 800p Medium at 28 fps on Deck, 42 fps on Ally X, and 47 fps on Xbox Ally X; Elden Ring at 35, 53, and 60 fps respectively. These estimates help set expectations for hardware class, but each game, driver, power mode, and patch can change the result. They do not mean every game at those settings has been measured on every device.
Does SteamOS or Bazzite run every PC game?
No. SteamOS and Bazzite use Proton to run many Windows games on Linux, including many Direct3D 12 titles through VKD3D-Proton 3.1, reported in late October 2026. Compatibility varies by game and update. Steam Deck Verified and Playable badges are useful first checks; Unknown is not a guarantee that a game will launch or work well.
Anti-cheat is the main hard stop for some popular live-service games. Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye can work when a game’s developers enable Linux support, but games using kernel-level anti-cheat may block Linux. FPSVibe’s Oct. 17, 2026 check of Valve Deck compatibility information and anti-cheat trackers counted 29 of 210 tracked games that either do not start or cannot be played online on SteamOS. Its examples included Fortnite, Valorant, Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG, Rainbow Six Siege, Destiny 2, and EA Sports FC 26. If one of these is a must-play, a Windows handheld is the safer purchase; Windows provides the broader compatibility set for these games.
Check the specific game on ProtonDB and GamingOnLinux’s anti-cheat coverage before buying hardware around it. A status can change after a game update, and a title that launches may still have broken online play or other limitations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass are officially Windows-only. Club386 reported in October 2026 that the open-source Xodus Nexus project can download and play some Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass games on Linux, including experimentally on SteamOS. Its developer claimed at least 42 games fully playable, including online, but coverage also described crashes and online problems. That is an unofficial, changing workaround—not a Microsoft feature or a reason to assume a Game Pass library will work on Linux.
For Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, or itch.io libraries, Bazzite’s Gaming Mode environment can be paired with launchers such as Heroic or Lutris. Steam Machine reviewers used Heroic to run Alan Wake II. These launcher options expand access, but they do not override game-specific DRM, anti-cheat, or compatibility limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you install SteamOS, Bazzite, or keep Windows?
Use SteamOS on Valve-supported hardware when you want the most direct console-like experience. Use Bazzite for an AMD or supported Intel PC or an established handheld when you accept a third-party Linux installation. Stay on Windows if a specific anti-cheat game, Microsoft Store title, or Windows launcher is essential.
| System | Best fit | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| SteamOS | Steam Deck OLED, Steam Machine, Legion Go S SteamOS | Custom PC installs are test-channel and AMD-GPU-only; hardware outside Valve’s supported list may need extra work. |
| Bazzite | AMD mini PCs and established ROG Ally or Legion Go devices | Nvidia Gaming Mode has major caveats; experimental Nvidia images are not a dependable default. |
| Windows 11 | Game Pass, launchers, and titles dependent on kernel anti-cheat | Does not provide the same SteamOS console-first Linux setup without additional configuration. |
SteamOS 3.9.5 was reported as stable on Oct. 24, 2026. The release was described as using an Arch base, KDE Plasma 6.7.3, and Linux kernel 7.2. Its changes included Steam Frame wireless-adapter work, lower Deck idle power when no audio is playing, a hidden-Wi-Fi fix, Legion Go 2 brightness support marked preliminary, a Forza Horizon 6 crash fix, and support for ELDEN RING and Dark Souls III on recent Intel Panther Lake hardware. These changes illustrate active hardware and compatibility work; support still depends on the device and game.
Bazzite is an image-based Fedora Atomic/Universal Blue distribution. Its stable image identified on Oct. 26, 2026 was 44.20261026, with Fedora 44, kernel 7.2.11, Mesa 26.2.4, Gamescope 3.17.0, and InputPlumber 0.83.0. Image-based updates retain a previous image for rollback if an update causes problems.

Bazzite Gaming Mode requirements and caveats include:
- Modern AMD graphics are the clearest fit: RX 4xx and newer discrete GPUs and 600M/700M integrated GPUs are supported.
- Intel Arc can work with minor caveats; Nvidia Gaming Mode has major caveats and the experimental
-deck-nvidiaimage. - Use UEFI with GPT, at least 8 GB of system RAM, and at least 50 GB of SSD space; 120 GB is recommended.
- Use Btrfs or ext4 for game drives. NTFS and exFAT are unsupported for Proton prefixes and can cause corruption or missing symlinks.
For dual-booting a handheld, a June 2026 installation guide recommended a 16 GB USB drive for the image, 40–60 GB of free space as a minimum, and 100 GB or more as a more realistic allocation. Steam Cloud can transfer saves where a game supports it. Before wiping Windows entirely, save the product key and recovery information needed to restore it.
How should you choose between these PS5 alternatives?
Start with where you play and which games cannot be compromised. The device that best meets those needs is more important than a broad “fastest” label, especially when Linux compatibility can be title-specific.
- You want an official SteamOS box beside the TV: choose the Steam Machine if its price and availability work for you, and you are comfortable with PC settings adjustments.
- You want a Linux TV PC for less: consider a Beelink SER9 Pro-class 780M mini PC with Bazzite, accepting that it takes more setup and often targets 1080p Low–Medium. Consider an 890M model if you want more integrated-graphics headroom and OCuLink upgrade potential.
- You want a handheld and minimal tinkering: buy the Steam Deck OLED for the most direct SteamOS experience, or the Legion Go S SteamOS edition if its larger 1200p screen is the priority.
- You want stronger handheld performance and can install Linux: consider the ROG Xbox Ally X with Bazzite, while checking your key games and hardware-specific caveats first.
- You want a lower upfront handheld price: the ROG Xbox Ally is listed at $599.99; a used Windows Legion Go S can also be a SteamOS recovery-image candidate, but entails installation steps.
- You must play Fortnite, Valorant, Warzone, Destiny 2, or another Linux-blocked title locally: choose a Windows handheld, or keep a Windows PC for those games. Linux does not bypass kernel anti-cheat.
- You must play a PlayStation exclusive that has no PC port: keep the PS5 in the plan. This guide’s alternatives cannot replace games that remain exclusive to PlayStation.
How we picked these alternatives
The recommendations prioritize the actual job: a PC-game library and a Linux environment in a living-room or handheld form factor. They distinguish official SteamOS hardware from third-party Linux installations, compare the price and graphics class where figures are available, and account for game compatibility and setup effort. Published performance figures are attributed to their named sources and conditions; no original gameplay testing is claimed here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move my Steam Deck microSD card to another Linux gaming PC?
It can be possible, but installed games may need Proton dependencies installed or reconfigured on the new system before they launch. Keep saves synced through Steam Cloud where supported rather than relying on a game card as the only copy.
Can I use a DualSense controller with a Linux gaming PC?
Bazzite documents out-of-the-box support for PlayStation controllers, and Steam Input can map a DualSense on Deck or Steam Machine. PlayStation Direct listed the wireless DualSense at $74 in 2026; that is a controller price, not a requirement for these PCs.
Will a Windows PC Game Pass subscription work on a Linux handheld?
Microsoft officially supports PC Game Pass on Windows, not Linux. Unofficial projects have reported partial Linux access, but that support can be experimental and may have crashes or online-play problems.
Can I install Bazzite without deleting Windows from a handheld?
Dual-boot setups are possible on supported devices, but reserve substantially more space than the bare minimum and keep Windows recovery details before changing partitions. Hardware-specific installation instructions matter, particularly for firmware, storage, and controls.
