The 5 Free Courses to Master Deep Learning in 2024 are DeepLearning.AI’s Deep Learning Specialization, fast.ai’s Practical Deep Learning for Coders, Andrej Karpathy’s Zero to Hero, freeCodeCamp’s PyTorch course, and Simplilearn’s AI Full Course. They are complementary options—not five required courses—and “free” may exclude certificates, grading, or compute.
Editorial note: “2024” is retained because it is the period named by the original recommendation. Course pages, software dependencies, platform policies, certificates, and notebook links can change, so check the provider’s current information before enrolling.
No single course creates deep-learning mastery. A realistic outcome is the ability to prepare data, choose and train a model, evaluate errors, debug the pipeline, explain the main design decisions, and complete at least two independent projects.
Key takeaways
- DeepLearning.AI’s Deep Learning Specialization is the strongest structured, theory-first choice for learners who want foundations, optimization, convolutional networks, sequence models, and project guidance.
- fast.ai’s Practical Deep Learning for Coders is the best code-first route for people who already know Python and want to build useful models quickly with PyTorch, fastai, Hugging Face, and Gradio.
- Andrej Karpathy’s Neural Networks: Zero to Hero is the best from-scratch route for understanding backpropagation, attention, and GPT-style systems beneath high-level APIs.
- freeCodeCamp’s PyTorch course emphasizes tensors, training loops, computer vision, and practical framework implementation, while Simplilearn offers a broader AI survey rather than a focused mastery curriculum.
- Free access does not necessarily include a certificate, graded assignments, instructor support, or unlimited GPU time; audit, notebook, software, and compute access should be treated as separate questions.
What are the five free deep-learning courses?
The five resources cover different learning styles: structured theory, application-first coding, from-scratch implementation, framework practice, and broad AI orientation. The comparison below is a selection guide, not a ranking that says every learner should complete all five.

The five-course lineup and the original descriptions are documented in the original 2024-oriented course coverage. The source was published on April 21, 2025, even though its title still referred to 2024.
What does “free” mean for these courses?
“Free” can describe several different forms of access, and a learner should not assume that free videos equal free completion. Check each resource against the following list:
- Free to watch: video lessons can be viewed without payment.
- Free to read or run: notes, source code, notebooks, or an online book can be accessed without buying a copy.
- Free audit: a platform exposes learning materials but may withhold graded work, instructor support, or a completion certificate.
- Free certificate: this is not automatic. Do not promise a certificate unless the provider currently states that one is included.
- Free compute: this is separate from course access. Training a model can require a local GPU, a hosted notebook, or paid cloud credits.
- Free software: PyTorch, fastai, Jupyter, and related tools can be open source while the cloud machines running them remain billable.
For the Deep Learning Specialization, the original coverage reports that audit access may be available without payment while a completion certificate requires payment. Platform policies can change, so treat that as a policy distinction to verify at enrollment rather than a permanent promise. The current Coursera specialization page is the appropriate place to check access options.
A similar distinction appears in provider documentation for other learning programs: the DeepLearning.AI PyTorch certificate information states that auditing does not provide a certificate. That policy is for the linked program and should not be generalized to every course in this list.
1. Is the Deep Learning Specialization the best structured course?
The Deep Learning Specialization is the best choice in this list for a learner who wants deliberate sequencing and a theory-first foundation rather than an immediate collection of coding demonstrations.
What you learn
- Neural-network foundations
- Forward propagation and backpropagation
- Initialization, regularization, and optimization
- Hyperparameter tuning and practical project decisions
- Convolutional neural networks
- Recurrent and other sequence-model concepts
The specialization is particularly useful when you want to understand why a model trains, why it overfits, how optimization choices affect results, and how to make project-level decisions. Basic programming—preferably Python—is a sensible starting point. Linear algebra and calculus help, while prior machine-learning experience is useful but not necessarily mandatory according to the original course assessment.
What are its limitations?
The main limitation is the access model. Audit access may expose the instructional material without providing every paid-platform feature, graded component, or certificate. The specialization is also not a substitute for building a complete project: watching explanations does not provide practice with messy data, reproducibility, or deployment.
Best companion project: Build a small image or text classifier. Document the baseline, train/validation/test split, loss and metrics, regularization choices, error categories, and the changes made after inspecting failures.
Rank #2
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
2. Is fast.ai’s Practical Deep Learning for Coders best for building quickly?
fast.ai’s Practical Deep Learning for Coders is the strongest practical, code-first choice for a learner who already programs in Python and wants to reach a functioning model quickly.
The official fast.ai course page describes a free course for people with coding experience, preferably in Python, and at least high-school mathematics. The course uses PyTorch, fastai, Hugging Face Transformers, and Gradio, combining high-level productivity with enough implementation work to create real applications.
What does fast.ai cover?
- Transfer learning and image classification
- Data augmentation
- Stochastic gradient descent and weight decay
- Embeddings
- Natural-language processing
- Recommendation systems
- Deployment-oriented workflows
fast.ai’s top-down approach starts with useful results and then explains the mechanisms behind them. That makes the course motivating for builders, but learners who require a slow mathematical derivation of every operation may need a theory-focused companion such as the Deep Learning Specialization or selected lessons from Karpathy.

The lesson workflow also connects videos with notebooks, Kaggle exercises, and the book, which makes it easier to turn watching into experimentation.
Best companion project: Select one domain—image, text, tabular data, or recommendations—and produce a working prototype. Record the data source, preprocessing, baseline, model, metric, failure cases, and an inference demo. Gradio can be useful for a small demonstration, but a demo is not the same thing as production deployment.
3. What makes Karpathy’s Neural Networks: Zero to Hero different?
Andrej Karpathy’s Neural Networks: Zero to Hero is different because the series emphasizes implementing core neural-network mechanisms rather than hiding them behind a high-level training API.
What does Zero to Hero teach?
- Character-level language models
- Neurons and multilayer perceptrons
- Backpropagation and manual gradient reasoning
- Optimization and learning-rate behavior
- Batch normalization and related training techniques
- Recurrent neural networks
- Attention and transformers
- GPT-style language models
The from-scratch philosophy helps explain tensor shapes, gradients, optimization behavior, and architectural mechanics. The same philosophy also creates a higher prerequisite burden. A learner without Python, basic machine learning, calculus, linear algebra, and statistics may spend more time repairing background gaps than understanding the lessons.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe original coverage presents Zero to Hero as a demanding practical series rather than a gentle first course. Start with a basic neural-network foundation if terms such as gradient, loss, matrix multiplication, and training/validation split are unfamiliar.

4. When should you choose freeCodeCamp’s PyTorch course?
Choose freeCodeCamp’s PyTorch for Deep Learning and Machine Learning course when your main goal is repeated practice with PyTorch tensors, datasets, model definitions, training loops, evaluation, and computer-vision workflows.
The course is implementation-focused and is especially useful for learners who want a framework-centered walkthrough. PyTorch practice can turn abstract concepts into concrete habits: moving data through a model, calculating loss, calling backpropagation, updating parameters, switching between training and evaluation modes, and inspecting predictions.

How is it different from fast.ai?
| Decision | Choose the freeCodeCamp PyTorch course when… | Choose fast.ai when… |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | You want concentrated PyTorch syntax and training-loop practice | You want to build useful applications quickly |
| Abstraction level | You prefer to see framework components assembled directly | You are comfortable starting with higher-level tools and then learning the details |
| Typical emphasis | Tensors, datasets, models, evaluation, and computer vision | Transfer learning, augmentation, NLP, recommendations, and deployment-oriented workflows |
| Best risk to manage | Passive watching during a long video | Moving too quickly over mathematical foundations |
The course should be treated as a coding lab, not a television program. After each major section, rewrite the example, alter a meaningful part of the data or model, run an experiment, and explain the result. A learner who can reproduce a notebook but cannot diagnose a shape mismatch, unstable loss, data leak, or misleading metric has not yet gained transferable framework skill.
5. Is Simplilearn’s Artificial Intelligence Full Course enough for deep learning?
Simplilearn’s Artificial Intelligence Full Course is useful as a broad orientation, but it is not the strongest standalone curriculum for systematic deep-learning mastery.
The original coverage describes an approximately 11-hour YouTube tutorial covering AI and machine-learning foundations, deep-learning fundamentals, CNNs, RNNs, LSTMs, NLP, computer vision, ChatGPT, and generative AI. That breadth helps an absolute beginner understand the field’s vocabulary and major application areas.
The trade-off is depth. A broad survey cannot give the same sustained practice in optimization, data preparation, debugging, experiment design, and project evaluation as a dedicated specialization or coding course. Learners may also need separate Python, NumPy, statistics, and linear-algebra study before they can turn the overview into working competence.
Best use: Watch selected sections to decide whether AI, computer vision, NLP, or generative AI interests you. Then choose a focused primary course rather than treating the survey as proof of mastery.

Which course should you choose?
The right choice depends more on your current skill and desired outcome than on a universal ranking.
| If you want to… | Choose first | Why | Add later |
|---|---|---|---|
| Learn theory in a deliberate order | Deep Learning Specialization | It provides explicit conceptual scaffolding across foundations, optimization, CNNs, sequence models, and project decisions | Karpathy for implementation depth; fast.ai for application work |
| Build useful models immediately | Practical Deep Learning for Coders | It uses an application-first workflow with current practical tools and transfer learning | Deep Learning Specialization for gaps in theory |
| Understand backpropagation and transformers | Neural Networks: Zero to Hero | It implements the mechanisms beneath high-level APIs | A foundational course first if the mathematics is unfamiliar |
| Practice PyTorch directly | freeCodeCamp PyTorch course | It concentrates on tensors, data, models, loops, evaluation, and vision | fast.ai for broader application patterns |
| Get a broad AI overview | Simplilearn AI Full Course | It surveys machine learning, deep learning, NLP, vision, and generative AI | A focused course for serious implementation |
What prerequisites should you learn first?
A serious deep-learning learner should ideally be comfortable with Python syntax, functions, classes, packages, virtual environments, NumPy arrays, basic data manipulation, probability and statistics, derivatives and gradients, matrix multiplication, Jupyter or Google Colab, basic Git and command-line use, train/validation/test splits, and common evaluation metrics.
You do not need to master every prerequisite before beginning. You do need enough background to understand the output of an experiment. If a course uses a gradient, loss function, tensor shape, or validation metric without explanation, pause and learn that concept rather than copying code blindly.

The stronger calculus, linear algebra, and statistics expectations for Karpathy’s series are best treated as editorial guidance for succeeding with the material, not as a formal provider admission rule.
What is a realistic study plan?
A realistic plan uses one primary course, one carefully chosen supplement, and two or three projects. Completing five overlapping courses from beginning to end is usually less valuable than completing one course actively and applying the ideas independently.
Path A: beginner with Python
- Complete the foundational portions of the Deep Learning Specialization.
- Reimplement a small neural network with NumPy or PyTorch.
- Take relevant fast.ai lessons and build one image, text, or tabular project.
- Use selected Karpathy lessons to deepen your understanding of backpropagation and language models.
- Finish with a portfolio project and a short technical report.
Path B: experienced programmer
- Start with fast.ai and build a useful prototype.
- Deploy or package a small inference demo.
- Use Karpathy’s series to understand the mechanics beneath the framework.
- Return to the Deep Learning Specialization for gaps in optimization, CNNs, sequence models, and project methodology.
- Use the PyTorch course as targeted reference material rather than watching every minute passively.
Path C: absolute beginner to AI
- Use the Simplilearn overview only to understand the main AI subfields.
- Learn Python, NumPy, basic statistics, and linear algebra separately.
- Move to the Deep Learning Specialization for a structured foundation.
- Add fast.ai for practical model building.
- Do not claim mastery until you can independently train, evaluate, debug, and explain multiple models.
How should you study instead of passively watching?
Every course section should produce evidence that you can use the idea, not merely recognize the instructor’s example.
- Write a short summary in your own words.
- Rewrite the example code rather than copying it unchanged.
- Change one meaningful variable, such as the learning rate, architecture, augmentation, batch size, or evaluation threshold.
- Run a reproducible experiment and record the result.
- Explain why the result changed, including uncertainty when the experiment is noisy.
- Save a portfolio artifact: notebook, README, model card, error analysis, demo, or technical report.
A complete project should include data preparation, a baseline, model selection, validation, error analysis, reproducibility, documentation, and—when appropriate—deployment or inference. Calling a generative-AI API is not equivalent to learning how neural networks are trained; generative AI is an application area built on deep-learning concepts.

A runtime error in an older lesson does not necessarily mean that the underlying concept is wrong. PyTorch and fastai APIs change, notebook links break, datasets disappear, cloud-notebook packages are deprecated, CUDA drivers conflict, and external data APIs change.
Best Value
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Use this troubleshooting order:
- Check the course’s own repository, lesson notes, and current setup instructions.
- Record the Python, PyTorch, fastai, CUDA, and operating-system versions in the error report.
- Read the complete traceback and identify whether the failure is an import, shape, device, data, or API problem.
- Try the course’s supported environment before changing several dependencies at once.
- Reduce the example to a tiny dataset and CPU execution to separate a conceptual error from a hardware or environment error.
- Replace deprecated calls only after understanding what the original code was intended to do.
Framework versions and provider setup instructions should not be hard-coded into a timeless recommendation. Check the course’s current documentation immediately before starting.
Can you complete these courses without a GPU?
You can complete many introductory exercises on a CPU, especially toy models and small datasets, but a GPU becomes useful for larger datasets, higher-resolution images, transformers, and repeated experiments.
Practical ways to control compute include reducing batch size, lowering image resolution, using smaller datasets, choosing pretrained models, and testing on a CPU before moving to hosted hardware. Free hosted notebooks may offer limited compute, but no course guarantees indefinite free GPU access. Paid cloud machines are usage-based; set budget alerts, shut down idle instances, and avoid training large models until the experiment is designed.

Official training entry points exist for Google Cloud machine-learning and AI training, AWS machine-learning training, and Microsoft Azure training. These pages provide learning and service information, not a promise of free or unlimited compute.
What should you learn after these courses?
After one primary course and several projects, the next step is not automatically another introductory playlist. Move toward experiment tracking, model serving, data and model versioning, distributed training, responsible-AI evaluation, transformers and retrieval systems, deployment and monitoring, and reading or reproducing research papers.
Those topics force you to handle the parts of deep learning that course examples often simplify: changing data, imperfect metrics, reproducibility, resource limits, maintenance, and the consequences of deploying a model for real users.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these deep-learning courses completely free?
The listed learning materials include free videos, lessons, notebooks, or audit access, but “free” does not guarantee free certificates, graded assignments, instructor support, print books, or GPU compute. Check the provider’s current terms before enrolling.
Which free deep-learning course should a beginner take first?
A beginner who knows Python should generally start with the Deep Learning Specialization because it offers the clearest structured foundation. A learner without Python, NumPy, and basic mathematics should learn those prerequisites first.
Can one of these courses make me a deep-learning expert?
No single course—and not necessarily all five—creates mastery. A learner should independently complete projects involving data preparation, training, evaluation, debugging, error analysis, documentation, and preferably deployment before claiming working competence.
Do I need a GPU to learn deep learning?
You do not need a GPU for every introductory exercise, because small models can run on a CPU. Larger datasets, high-resolution images, transformers, and repeated experiments may require a hosted or local GPU, and free hosted compute is limited.
The Bottom Line
Choose one primary route instead of enrolling in all five. Start with the Deep Learning Specialization for structured theory, fast.ai for rapid practical building, Karpathy’s Zero to Hero for first-principles implementation, freeCodeCamp’s PyTorch course for framework practice, or Simplilearn for broad orientation. Then build and document real projects; that work—not the number of courses completed—is what turns free study into deep-learning competence.
