Yes—ordinary in-game saves can generally be moved between compatible Citra-family 3DS emulators on an Anbernic RG DDS. Save from inside the game, close the source emulator, back up its user folder, and copy the matching game data into the destination emulator’s selected user folder. For Azahar and Lime3DS, the commonly documented save file is main under the game’s Citra-style sdmc directory. Save states are a different format and should not be assumed to work across emulators.
The RG DDS-specific menus and final bundled software are not yet verified. Anbernic lists the RG DDS as an Android 16 pre-order with gradual shipping beginning December 10, 2026, so the procedure below explains the documented file layout rather than promising a particular launch image or one-tap import screen.
What can transfer between 3DS emulators?
Normal in-game saves are the transferable part. They are written by the emulated 3DS software into the emulator’s virtual SD card, where another compatible Citra-family emulator can read the same game directory. Azahar and Lime3DS use the documented Citra-family arrangement, including a per-game file commonly named main.

It is a snapshot of the emulator, game process and memory at a particular moment. Different emulator builds can serialize that state differently, so a state made in one app may fail to load, crash, or silently revert in another. Use the game’s own save menu before transferring.

Why is RG DDS-specific guidance still limited?
The hardware is listed rather than shipping as a mature, documented platform. Anbernic’s RG DDS page specifies a 4.7-inch 1200 × 720 upper display, a 4-inch 960 × 720 lower display, TF/microSD expansion up to 2TB, and configurations that may ship without a card. The manufacturer says, “Ships gradually starting December 10, 2026.” These are product-page specifications, not independent measurements of final hardware or its emulator image. See Anbernic’s RG DDS listing.
Do not copy instructions written for the older RG DS or for Android 14 onto the RG DDS. The Android version, package identifiers, onboarding screens and preinstalled emulator may differ. Azahar’s team also said, in an October 26, 2026 announcement quoted by GamesRadar+, “Any issues or bugs related to devices from this specific manufacturer will not be investigated or resolved.” That is a support-policy limitation, not evidence that file copying is impossible. The report is at GamesRadar+.
What should you prepare before copying a save?
- Identify the exact source and destination apps, their versions or builds, and whether each is a standalone application or a RetroArch core.
- Know which user folder each app has selected. On Android, a guessed
Android/data/<package>path is not a reliable universal answer. - Make a fresh save inside the game, then exit the source emulator completely so all data is flushed.
- Have a separate backup location: a computer, another storage device, or a spare microSD card. The RG DDS supports TF expansion, and a no-card configuration is listed, so removable storage can be optional rather than assumed.
- Record the destination’s existing progress before replacing anything. Copy it to a backup folder instead of deleting it.
Android’s file picker can show a different view from a computer connected to the same device. If a directory appears empty, first confirm the app’s selected user folder and permissions instead of concluding that the save has vanished.

- Confirm the source and destination. Open each emulator’s storage or user-directory setting and note the selected folder. Azahar can let Android users reselect an existing user directory after a package-ID change, and Android setup guidance shows folder selection during onboarding. The relevant Azahar discussion is at github.com/azahar-emu/azahar/discussions/1942.
- Create a current in-game save. Use the game’s own save command, wait for the confirmation, and close the game and emulator. Do not rely on a quick-save state as the source.
- Back up the source user folder. Copy the entire user folder, or at minimum its
sdmctree, somewhere separate. Keep this untouched copy until the destination has been verified. - Find the game save. In the documented Citra-family layout, look under:
<selected user folder>/sdmc/Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/<ID1>/title/00040000/<game>/data/00000001/mainID0,ID1andgameare directory identifiers, not literal names. Thetitletree contains game saves;extdatais separate extra data, while NAND and configuration are elsewhere. - Match the same game in the destination. Locate the destination’s corresponding
Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/<ID1>/title/00040000/<game>directory. Do not paste a file into a different title directory or rename a state file and expect compatibility. - Let the destination create its folder if necessary. If no recognizable directory exists, launch that game in the destination, make a new in-game save, close the emulator, and compare the newly created path with the source. This is a cautious way to reveal the destination’s active layout, not a verified RG DDS menu instruction.
- Preserve destination progress. Copy the destination’s existing
mainfile or game directory to a dated backup. Then copy the source game’smaininto the matching destination directory, replacing the file only after the backup is secure. - Open and verify. Start the destination emulator, launch the game normally, and load the in-game save. Do not load an older save state during this check. If the expected progress appears, retain both backups until you have played and saved successfully again.
The documented Azahar/Lime3DS procedure and path details are described in the PKForge Azahar and Lime3DS guide. It describes compatibility-based file handling, not a hands-on RG DDS test.
How does RetroArch change the save location?
A RetroArch Azahar core may not read the same folder as a standalone Azahar installation. Libretro documents a default core directory named Azahar/ beneath RetroArch’s frontend save directory; that directory contains the core’s sdmc data. The core also exposes a Save Location option.
| Setup | Where to look | Important setting |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone Azahar or Lime3DS | The app’s selected user folder, then sdmc/Nintendo 3DS/... |
Use the user-directory selection shown by that app |
| RetroArch Azahar core | RetroArch’s save directory, usually beneath Azahar/, then its sdmc tree |
Save Location can use Azahar Default, which points to standalone Azahar’s user directory |
Check that option before copying. A correctly copied file in the wrong sdmc tree will not be read by the setup you launch. Libretro’s documentation lists both saves and states, but that listing does not certify that save states interchange between cores and standalone applications. See Libretro’s Azahar core documentation.
What should you do if the destination says there is no save?
Work from the running app outward. The selected user folder is more authoritative than an Android package name or a path guessed from a forum post.

- Check the active user directory. Reopen the emulator’s storage setting and verify the folder it actually selected. Package-ID changes can leave old data in a different directory.
- Inspect the complete tree. Follow
sdmc/Nintendo 3DS/<ID0>/<ID1>/title/00040000/<game>/data/00000001/and confirm thatmainis present. Check the matchingextdatadirectory if the game stores important information outside the primary save. - Confirm the source was closed cleanly. Recreate an in-game save, exit the emulator, and copy again. A still-running process may not have written the final data.
- Check title identity. The destination must be running the same game title and compatible release context. A file from another game’s directory is not made compatible by renaming it.
- Use the app’s file picker or a computer carefully. Android access restrictions can hide folders that are visible over another connection method. An apparently empty guessed path is not proof that progress is gone.
- Restore rather than experiment destructively. If the destination becomes unstable, close it and restore the untouched destination backup, then retry with the source backup.
PKForge notes that an exported copy is not active until it is imported back into the emulator. A Reddit question about locating Citra saves on another Anbernic model illustrates the common path confusion, but it does not establish RG DDS behavior; see the Reddit discussion.
Do you need to copy more than the main file?
Start with the matching game directory and its main file. Some games also depend on extra data stored under extdata, so preserve the full source sdmc backup before deciding that only one file is sufficient. Copying NAND, configuration or unrelated system directories can introduce conflicts and is unnecessary for a basic game-save migration.
If the game launches but settings, downloadable content or other persistent information is missing, compare the source and destination extdata trees. Move only the corresponding game data, keep the original destination copy, and test one change at a time.
Can you transfer save states too?
There is no documented guarantee of cross-emulator save-state compatibility. Even when both applications list state files, their internal snapshots may depend on different emulator versions, memory layouts, graphics backends or core implementations. Treat states as app-specific and recreate a normal in-game save before migration.

Which emulator combinations are the safest assumption?
Azahar and Lime3DS are the clearest documented pairing because both use the Citra-family user-directory structure. A different 3DS implementation may use another layout, encryption arrangement or import process; do not promise universal compatibility merely because it runs the same game.
Compare candidates on four practical points: whether they use the Citra-style sdmc tree, whether they are standalone or a RetroArch core, how their Android folder picker exposes the user directory, and whether the project offers device-specific support. Azahar’s stated policy concerning this manufacturer means RG DDS troubleshooting may not receive official investigation even when ordinary file operations remain possible.
How can you make the transfer reversible?
Use a two-backup rule. Keep an untouched copy of the source user folder and a separate copy of the destination’s original game directory. Give each backup a date and identify the emulator and game. Never overwrite the only copy while troubleshooting; if the destination fails to recognize the save, restore its original files and repeat the process after confirming the selected folder.

A microSD card sized for the RG DDS can serve as optional separate backup storage because Anbernic lists TF expansion up to 2TB. A USB-C microSD reader is useful only when moving a removable card through a computer; the product listing already includes a USB cable, so a replacement cable is not required simply to perform this procedure.

What should RG DDS owners expect at launch?
Expect to identify the emulator and its user directory yourself unless the shipping software supplies a documented import tool. The listed pre-order status means a final bundled emulator, package name and onboarding flow could change before units ship. Keep the procedure file-based, retain backups, and avoid assuming that a marketing image or an unofficial fork is the officially supported build.
The practical verdict is straightforward: transfer normal in-game saves by matching the same title’s directory under the destination’s selected sdmc tree, with backups on both sides. Do not rely on save states, guessed Android paths or an unverified RG DDS-specific menu.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move a 3DS save from a computer to the RG DDS without a microSD card?
Possibly, if the Android build exposes its selected user folder through an approved file-transfer or file-picker workflow. The documented procedure does not establish a universal USB import screen, so use the app’s own folder selection and retain a computer backup rather than assuming direct cable transfer.
Will changing the emulator package name delete my Citra save?
Not necessarily. Azahar’s Android release guidance says users can reselect an existing user directory after a package-ID change; the data may still be intact in the old folder. Reopen the app’s user-directory selector and point it to that existing folder before copying files.
Why does my game load but show missing extras after the save transfer?
The primary save is commonly stored as main, but some games also use separate extdata. Compare the matching game’s extra-data directories in your source and destination backups, and copy only the corresponding data while preserving the original destination files.
Is an Azahar RetroArch save interchangeable with standalone Azahar?
It can be, when RetroArch’s Azahar core is configured to use Azahar Default, which points to the standalone user directory. If the core uses its default frontend save directory instead, its sdmc tree is separate and the standalone app will not automatically see those files.
What should I do if the RG DDS ships with a different emulator than expected?
First identify whether that emulator is Citra-family compatible and locate its documented user folder. If its layout differs, do not paste a main file blindly; keep the original backups and look for that emulator’s own import or save-directory documentation.
