You can combine a 3D printer with a smart home most effectively through OctoPrint and Home Assistant. The native OctoPrint integration can expose print state, progress, temperatures, estimated completion, controls and a configured camera, giving you five useful projects: a live printer dashboard, finish and error alerts, a camera view, automatic reconnect after an OctoPrint restart, and MQTT-based discovery of progress sensors.
These ideas are monitoring and control conveniences, not substitutes for supervision or printer safety features. Your available entities depend on how OctoPrint is configured, and the MQTT route has extra software and compatibility requirements.
What do you need before combining a 3D printer with a smart home?
You need an OctoPrint server that can communicate with the printer, a running Home Assistant installation, and a network path between them. Home Assistant’s native OctoPrint integration is the simplest starting point because it polls OctoPrint locally and can create entities for the printer and current job.
- OctoPrint: Confirm that the printer is configured and that OctoPrint can report its current state, job information and temperatures.
- Home Assistant: Add the OctoPrint integration using the credentials and connection details requested by Home Assistant.
- Optional camera: Configure the webcam in OctoPrint first if you want a live feed in Home Assistant.
- Optional MQTT path: Run an MQTT broker reachable by Home Assistant and install the OctoPrint-MQTT and HomeAssistant Discovery components if you choose plugin-based discovery.
Do not assume that every printer, webcam or OctoPrint plugin exposes identical entities. Open the integration’s device and entity pages after setup and use the names Home Assistant actually created in dashboards and automations.

1. How do I build a live 3D-printer dashboard?
Use the native OctoPrint integration to turn printer telemetry into a dedicated Home Assistant dashboard. It can provide binary sensors for printing and print errors, job sensors for progress and estimated finish time, the current file name, and actual and target temperatures for the nozzle and bed.
Arrange the information by decision
Put the most actionable information at the top: whether a print is active, whether an error is present, percentage complete and the estimated finish time. A second row can show the file name and current state. Temperature cards belong together so you can compare actual values with the targets set in the job.
Add controls only where they are appropriate
The integration can expose pause, resume and stop controls, along with controls for nozzle and bed temperature targets. Keep those controls behind a confirmation step or on a restricted dashboard if other household members can access Home Assistant. A stop button is powerful: it should be treated as an intentional intervention, not as a routine way to end a job.
Make the dashboard useful at a glance
- Use a prominent state indicator for printing versus an error condition.
- Show progress as a percentage and include the estimated completion time next to it.
- Display both actual and target temperatures, rather than a single temperature number.
- Include the active file name so you can identify a job without opening OctoPrint.
- Hide entities that your OctoPrint setup does not provide instead of treating an absent sensor as a fault.
The result is a monitoring surface: Home Assistant presents the values OctoPrint reports, while OctoPrint remains the system that communicates with the printer.
2. Can Home Assistant tell me when a print finishes or fails?
Yes. Build an automation in which a printer state or error sensor is the trigger and a notification or lighting scene is the action. Home Assistant’s OctoPrint entities include printing, print errors, progress and estimated finish time, so you can choose a signal that matches the notification you want.

A finish notification pattern
- Open Settings → Automations & scenes in Home Assistant and create a new automation.
- Select the OctoPrint printing entity as the trigger, then choose the transition that represents the end of an active job in your installation. Verify the entity’s real states in Developer Tools before enabling the automation.
- Add a condition if necessary, such as requiring that a job had been active, to avoid a message when Home Assistant starts and merely restores an idle state.
- Add a notification action and include the current file name or progress sensor in the message.
- Save the automation and run a short test print so you can confirm the trigger and the notification without relying on an untested rule for a long job.
The exact state labels and entity IDs can vary with the integration version and your setup. Treat the finish rule as an automation you build, not as a dedicated finish-notification feature that appears automatically.
Error and lighting actions
Create a separate automation for the print-error binary sensor. A phone notification is appropriate for a fault; a red light scene can make the condition visible from another room. For a successful completion, a brief different scene or a message containing the estimated finish information can be less disruptive than an alarm.
Keep the actions idempotent where possible. A notification can be sent once when the state changes, while a light scene should specify the intended brightness and color so it does not inherit an unexpected previous setting. Do not use a lighting action as proof that the printer is safe to touch; it only reflects the state Home Assistant received.
3. How can I put the OctoPrint camera in my Home Assistant dashboard?
Configure the camera in OctoPrint, then use the camera entity supplied by the native OctoPrint integration in a Home Assistant dashboard. The feed is conditional: Home Assistant can show it when OctoPrint has a camera configured, but a webcam is not automatically available merely because OctoPrint is connected.
Configure the feed at the source
- Set up and test the webcam in OctoPrint first. Confirm that the stream displays in OctoPrint before troubleshooting Home Assistant.
- Check the camera or webcam URL and stream type used by your OctoPrint configuration. An MJPEG stream is a documented configuration pattern for this use case.
- Reload the OctoPrint integration in Home Assistant or restart the relevant configuration after changing the camera settings.
- Add the resulting camera entity to a dashboard card and test it from the devices that will view it.
The HomeAssistant Discovery plugin’s documentation specifically notes that its MQTT discovery does not automatically expose the camera. If you use that plugin, configure the camera separately rather than expecting MQTT discovery to import the video feed.

Plan for network and privacy limits
A camera stream may work on the local network while failing remotely because of access controls or stream URLs. Protect the feed with the authentication and network controls provided by your OctoPrint and Home Assistant setup. Avoid placing a camera where it records people or sensitive areas simply to obtain a wider view of the printer.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Home Assistant documents the octoprint.printer_connect action for asking OctoPrint to connect to the printer again. A practical automation watches the printing sensor for an unavailable transition and calls that action after the server returns.
Build the recovery automation
- Identify the OctoPrint printing sensor created by your integration.
- Create an automation whose trigger is that sensor becoming unavailable. Add a short delay or a server-availability condition if your OctoPrint host takes time to finish booting.
- Add the
octoprint.printer_connectaction and select the relevant OctoPrint device when Home Assistant offers a device target. - Save the automation, restart OctoPrint during a maintenance window, and inspect the entity history and OctoPrint log to confirm that the connection request was received.
A minimal action block is conceptually equivalent to:
action:
- service: octoprint.printer_connect
Use the action syntax and target selector shown by your current Home Assistant release. The documented action prepares OctoPrint to reconnect; it does not promise to resume an interrupted print, reconstruct lost state or bypass a printer’s safety interlocks. Treat an interrupted job as requiring a human check.
5. Can I automate my 3D printer with MQTT discovery?
Yes, through the OctoPrint HomeAssistant Discovery plugin, which publishes printer status and printing/progress sensors over MQTT. This is a separate path from Home Assistant’s native OctoPrint integration: the plugin describes local push updates, while the native integration uses local polling.

What the MQTT path requires
- Provide Home Assistant with a working MQTT broker. Home Assistant’s MQTT documentation recommends a private, self-managed broker setup using the Mosquitto broker app.
- Install and configure OctoPrint-MQTT so OctoPrint can connect to that broker.
- Install the HomeAssistant Discovery plugin in OctoPrint and enable discovery.
- Use the broker credentials, host and discovery settings that match Home Assistant’s MQTT integration.
- Restart or reload the relevant services, then check Home Assistant’s MQTT device and entity list for the discovered status and progress sensors.
The plugin listing was registered in 2020 and reports a last release of August 6, 2023. Check its current maintenance status and compatibility with your OctoPrint and Home Assistant versions before making it the foundation of a new installation.
What MQTT discovery does not do automatically
Discovery is for the entities described by the plugin, not a universal import of every OctoPrint feature. In particular, the plugin documentation says the camera is not automatically exposed through MQTT discovery. Keep the native camera configuration path separate, and verify which controls and sensors the plugin actually publishes.
What is the difference between the native integration and MQTT discovery?
Both approaches can connect OctoPrint data to Home Assistant, but they have different dependencies and update models. Neither source establishes a universal speed or reliability winner, so choose based on your existing OctoPrint environment and the components you are willing to maintain.
| Consideration | Home Assistant native OctoPrint integration | OctoPrint HomeAssistant Discovery plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Connection model | Local polling, as described by Home Assistant | MQTT local push, as described by the plugin |
| Extra infrastructure | OctoPrint configuration and Home Assistant integration credentials | MQTT broker, OctoPrint-MQTT and discovery plugin |
| Typical data | Printing and error sensors, job progress, estimated finish, file name, temperatures and documented controls | Printer status plus printing and progress sensors described by the plugin |
| Camera | Available when a camera is configured in OctoPrint | Not automatically exposed by MQTT discovery |
| Maintenance concern | Follow the current Home Assistant integration documentation | Verify plugin release activity and version compatibility before deployment |
If you already operate an MQTT broker and want push-based entities, the plugin may fit your architecture. If you want the documented controls and camera support with fewer moving parts, start with the native integration and add MQTT only for a specific requirement.

- No entities appear: Confirm OctoPrint is reachable, credentials are valid and the printer is configured in OctoPrint. Reload the integration after correcting the connection.
- The notification never fires: Inspect the entity’s history and Developer Tools to see its actual states. A trigger written for a guessed state label will not run if your installation uses a different label.
- Temperature values are missing: Check whether OctoPrint receives nozzle and bed telemetry from the printer. Home Assistant cannot display values OctoPrint does not provide.
- The camera card is blank: Test the stream in OctoPrint, verify the URL and stream type, then reload Home Assistant. MQTT discovery alone will not create the camera entity.
- Reconnect does nothing: Confirm that the OctoPrint server is fully running, the printing sensor has returned from unavailable, and the automation targets the correct OctoPrint device.
- MQTT devices are absent: Test broker connectivity, verify OctoPrint-MQTT credentials, ensure discovery is enabled and check broker logs for rejected connections.
Keep native integration and MQTT experiments separate while troubleshooting. Running both can create similarly named sensors, making it harder to identify which path supplied a value or trigger.
Is a smart plug part of a safe printer automation?
A power-monitoring smart plug can be an optional way to observe energy use, but it is not established here as a printer-control or safety device. Do not cut power to a printer during a job through an automation, and do not treat a plug’s energy reading as evidence that a print has completed or that the machine is safe.
For unattended printing, retain the printer manufacturer’s protections, keep the printer in a suitable location and use the dashboard, camera and alerts to support supervision rather than replace it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Home Assistant need a cloud service for these OctoPrint automations?
The two documented connection paths are local: the native integration polls OctoPrint locally, while the discovery plugin publishes through a local MQTT broker. Remote viewing or notifications can introduce separate network and account requirements, but the printer-to-Home-Assistant data path itself is described as local.
Why can the estimated finish time change during a print?
The estimate is a value reported by OctoPrint, not a guarantee from Home Assistant. Changes in measured job progress, printer behavior or the underlying file estimate can therefore alter what the dashboard displays.
Should I install both the native integration and the MQTT discovery plugin?
Only do so for a deliberate reason, such as needing a sensor available through one path. Running both can produce duplicate entities and ambiguous automation triggers, so document which integration owns each dashboard card and rule.
Can I safely leave a printer running because Home Assistant reports no error?
No. A clear error sensor means only that no reported error is currently present. It does not replace physical inspection, fire precautions, ventilation decisions or the printer maker’s operating guidance.
