Oversized purge towers usually come from conservative, one-size-fits-all transition settings rather than a hardware fault. The practical fix is to measure the purge from a representative sliced file, then tune the transitions that actually consume material. In PrusaSlicer, use Purging volumes; in OrcaSlicer, adjust Prime volume, tower width and multimaterial purge destinations. You can often move safe purge into infill or a sacrificial wipe object, reducing tower waste without sacrificing color changes.
There is no documented universal saving of “hundreds of dollars” per year. Your result depends on purge grams per print, print frequency and filament price. Measure those three values and use the calculation in this guide instead of relying on a general claim.
What does a purge or wipe tower do?
A purge tower gives a multi-material printer a place to extrude during a filament or tool change. The extrusion pushes out remnants of the previous color, fills the nozzle with the new material and helps stabilize flow before the nozzle returns to the model. Without enough purge, the first lines after a change can be streaky, muddy or mechanically weak.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Purge demand changes with the two materials involved and with the order of color changes. A dark-to-light transition generally needs more clearing than a light-to-dark transition because traces of the dark filament are easier to see in the light one.

When a tower looks dramatically larger than the model, the slicer is usually applying cautious values across many transitions. Those values protect against contamination, but they may be excessive for your particular filament pair, nozzle, temperatures and appearance standard.
Why is my 3D printer making such a huge purge tower?
The tower grows when the slicer’s purge matrix asks for a large volume at each unload/load transition, when a print contains many color changes, or when the tower is made wider to keep it stable. A model with frequent alternation between colors can consume more purge than a larger model with only two transitions.
Transition-specific volumes matter
Prusa Research gives example values of 80 mm³ unloaded and 70 mm³ loaded for black-to-white, or 150 mm³ total. Its example for white-to-black is 20 mm³ unloaded plus 30 mm³ loaded, or 50 mm³ total. These are illustrative values, not universal defaults; your filament and printer may need different amounts.
| Example transition | Unload volume | Load volume | Total purge | Why it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black to white | 80 mm³ | 70 mm³ | 150 mm³ | More clearing is useful when dark residue would show in a light color |
| White to black | 20 mm³ | 30 mm³ | 50 mm³ | Small traces of white are usually less visible in black |
OrcaSlicer also exposes tower geometry. In the applicable Type 2 tower mode, its documented default prime volume is 45 mm³. Increasing tower width uses more filament per layer but can reduce tower height; reducing width does the opposite and can make a tall tower less stable.
Hidden purge can make the tower look smaller without eliminating waste
Wiping into infill or into another object moves some purge material away from the visible tower. It does not make the material disappear: it is still part of the print’s filament use. In OrcaSlicer’s multimaterial workflow, a minimum purge is still sent to the tower before additional purge is directed into infill or a sacrificial object.
How much filament does a purge tower waste?
Use your own sliced file or the finished waste to establish a baseline. Cubic millimetres in a purge matrix are a volume estimate; grams are easier to price because filament is sold by mass.

- Slice a representative multicolor model that has the usual number and order of color changes.
- Record the slicer’s filament estimate for the purge tower, or collect and weigh the tower and purge strands after printing.
- Repeat with more than one representative model if your jobs vary substantially. A logo with many alternating layers will not have the same purge profile as a model with long single-color sections.
- Record the filament price per gram for the material you actually buy. If you use several materials, calculate each material separately or use a weighted average.
For a quick conversion from volume to mass, keep the slicer’s mass estimate as the primary value when available. Density, filament diameter and the slicer’s extrusion assumptions can make a simple volume-to-gram conversion less accurate than weighing the waste.

PrusaSlicer provides global, per-filament and per-transition controls. Open the Purging volumes… control in the right panel, then make small changes to the transitions that dominate your matrix instead of lowering every value at once.
- Establish a baseline. Slice and save the original purge estimate, or weigh the original tower and purge lines.
- Open the matrix. In the right panel, click Purging volumes…, the control identified in Prusa Research’s documentation.
- Find the expensive pairs. Look for dark-to-light and other transitions that occur repeatedly in your model. The total for a pair includes the unload and load portions, so consider both.
- Lower values gradually. Reduce one or a small group of dominant transitions in modest increments. Keep a note of each change so you can return to the last reliable setting.
- Choose a purge destination. Enable Wipe into this object’s infill only when the model has enough infill and dark contamination will not be visible through its walls. Otherwise assign a sacrificial wipe object.
- Re-slice and inspect. Compare the new purge estimate with the baseline before printing.
- Print a validation sample. Examine the first lines after each change, the color boundaries, and the tower’s physical stability. If contamination or weak extrusion appears, restore some volume for that specific transition rather than undoing every optimization.
Wipe-to-infill can greatly reduce the amount of wasted material, according to Prusa Research. The trade-off is cosmetic: dark purge trapped in light infill can remain visible through thin outer walls. Increasing the number of perimeters can hide that material, but it changes the model’s print time and shell thickness.
What does Prime volume do in OrcaSlicer?
Prime volume is the amount OrcaSlicer uses to re-establish a reliable extrusion state at a tool or filament change in the relevant tower mode. A larger value gives more clearing and priming margin but increases waste; a smaller value saves material only if the new color reaches the nozzle cleanly.
- Slice the same representative model with your existing OrcaSlicer profile and note the tower or filament estimate.
- Open the multimaterial purge settings and identify Prime volume, tower width and the purge-destination controls.
- Use the documented 45 mm³ Type 2 default as a reference point, not as a guaranteed setting for your printer.
- Reduce prime volume in small steps while keeping an eye on the transitions that show the most contamination.
- Adjust tower width separately. A wider tower consumes more filament per layer but can be shorter; a narrower tower may save material yet become unstable.
- Enable purge into infill or a sacrificial object where the geometry can hide it. Keep in mind that OrcaSlicer still sends a minimum purge to the tower before the redirected purge.
- Re-slice and print a short validation model before applying the profile to a long production job.
Should I purge into infill or use a wipe object?
Use infill when the purge will be completely hidden and the model has enough internal volume. Use a sacrificial wipe object when appearance, sparse infill or thin walls make hidden contamination risky.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | Color contamination risk | Visible tower waste | Print-time and stability considerations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated purge tower | Lowest risk when tuned correctly | Highest if every transition is sent to the tower | Provides a predictable, stable priming surface; tower adds layers and time | Visible parts, thin walls, demanding color boundaries |
| Wipe into model infill | Can show through light or thin shells | Lower tower waste, but purge remains in the print | No extra object; may require more perimeters or adequate infill | Opaque parts with substantial infill and hidden interiors |
| Sacrificial wipe object | Low risk to the main model | Redirects waste to a separate object rather than eliminating it | Consumes bed area and adds a second object to print | Models where any internal color bleed is unacceptable |
Judge the choice by five variables: contamination and surface quality, purge grams, number and order of color changes, print time and tower stability, and whether the model offers safe hidden infill or a sacrificial object.

How do I prove that a slicer change is saving money?
Calculate savings from measured mass, not from the tower’s apparent size. Use this formula:
(old purge grams − new purge grams) × prints per year × filament price per gram = annual savings
For example, if your own measurements show a 12 g reduction per print, you run 80 comparable prints per year and your filament costs $0.025 per gram, the result is 12 × 80 × 0.025 = $24. The arithmetic is only an illustration; substitute your measured values and current price.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Separate one-time profile tuning from recurring savings. A larger purge reduction on a rare, highly multicolored model may save less annually than a modest reduction on a job you print every week. Keep the old and new settings, purge mass, print count and price in a small log so you can update the estimate when filament prices or your print mix changes.
What should I inspect after lowering purge values?
Do not approve a lower setting solely because the tower weighs less. Validate the first extrusion after every relevant transition and check the finished part under the lighting in which it will be used.
- Color carryover: Look for dark streaks in light regions, especially after repeated dark-to-light changes.
- Under-extrusion: Watch the first line or perimeter after a change for gaps, rough texture or poor layer bonding.
- Tower stability: A narrow or tall tower can wobble, detach or be struck by the nozzle.
- Surface bleed: Inspect thin walls and light shells when purge is hidden in infill.
- Change-order effects: Test the actual sequence used by the model; reversing a pair can require a different volume.
- Long-run consistency: A setting that works once may fail after many changes, so include a model with the normal number of transitions.
If a failure appears, increase the value only for the offending transition, widen the tower if it is unstable, or move purge back to a sacrificial object. This preserves savings on transitions that were already clean.

Which purge strategy should I choose?
Choose the lowest-waste method that still meets your appearance and reliability requirements.
- Prioritize appearance. Keep a dedicated tower and conservative values for light colors, transparent parts and thin shells.
- Prioritize material efficiency. Tune the largest transition values first and redirect safe purge into dense, opaque infill.
- Prioritize repeatability. Use a sacrificial wipe object when different models share a profile but have unpredictable infill.
- Prioritize tower stability. If a tower is toppling, increase its width or retain more purge in the tower instead of forcing all savings through smaller geometry.
There is no single correct purge number. The right setting is the smallest one that survives your transition order, filament combinations, nozzle conditions and visual quality test.

Colors remain mixed after a change
Restore volume for that specific transition, starting with the unload or load portion that was reduced most. Dark-to-light pairs often need more clearing than the reverse direction.
The model has dark marks inside light walls
Stop wiping that purge into infill for the affected model, add a sacrificial wipe object, or increase perimeters so the hidden material cannot be seen through the shell.
The tower becomes tall and fragile
Increase tower width so each layer has a larger footprint, or route more purge to a stable wipe object. A wider tower uses more filament per layer but can reduce total height.

The tower is still large after tuning
Check how many transitions the model actually makes. A modest purge per change can still produce a large total when colors alternate frequently. Measure a second model before changing the profile globally.

The slicer estimate and waste weight disagree
Confirm that you are comparing the same items: tower, purge lines, skirt-like priming and any discarded filament may be counted differently. Use repeated weighing of the complete waste stream to establish a consistent baseline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will reducing purge volume damage my nozzle or extruder?
Purge volume controls how much material is exchanged, not the mechanical force applied to the nozzle. The risk is incomplete color or material change, so validate extrusion and bonding after each transition and restore volume if those symptoms appear.
Do I need a separate purge value for every color pair?
Not necessarily. Start with the pairs that occur most often or show the strongest contamination, then leave reliable pairs unchanged. A per-transition adjustment is useful when one direction, such as dark to light, needs more clearing than its reverse.
Can a purge tower be eliminated completely?
Usually not for dependable multimaterial changes. OrcaSlicer documents that a minimum purge still goes to the tower before redirected purge, and a dedicated tower remains the safest option when surface contamination cannot be tolerated.
Is purge material safe to use in a functional part?
Only when its location and material combination are acceptable for that part. Mixed colors or materials can have unknown appearance and properties, so keep redirected purge inside noncritical infill unless you have verified the result for the intended use.
