Yes. A 2026 study reports a freestanding natural-rubber latex glove made by spraying pre-vulcanised latex onto a heated ceramic hand former, drying the film and removing it from the temporary support. The result is a laboratory proof of concept, not evidence that conventional glove factories can already be replaced.

The immediate manufacturing problem was material delivery: commercial latex with a high total-solids content clogged the spray nozzle. Diluting the latex enabled continuous spraying, but excessive dilution caused dripping, uneven films and more water to evaporate. The prototype’s mechanical results were within the range of the commercial gloves tested, while industrial throughput, barrier performance, regulatory approval and commercial availability remain unestablished.

What did the 2026 study actually print?

The team built an in-house system called the 3D Printer for Elastomeric Products, or 3D-PEP. It deposited natural-rubber latex as a thin film on a ceramic hand former that was heated during spraying. After the film dried, the glove was stripped from the former and became a freestanding object.

That temporary support is the key distinction from ordinary spray coating. A coating normally remains attached to the object underneath it; in 3D-PEP, the former supplies the shape only during manufacture. The deposited elastomer must therefore become continuous and strong enough to handle removal as a glove.

“The in-house developed 3D Printer for Elastomeric Products (or 3D-PEP) resulted in the manufacturing of the first ever high-performance 3D printed latex glove which is visually almost indistinguishable to one produced on mass scale.”

This is the study authors’ description of their prototype, not an independent certification of mass-production equivalence. Their conclusion also says that commercial, off-the-shelf pre-vulcanised latex produced “adequate mechanical properties and superior thickness control” in the tested glove.

The reported apparatus used a gravity-fed spray gun with a 1.5-millimetre nozzle, compressed air at 3.5 bar, a former preheated to 50 °C and a 60-millimetre spray distance. These values describe the proof-of-concept setup; they are not established production specifications for every latex formulation or factory.

Because the latex was already pre-vulcanised, the reported process did not include an additional post-vulcanisation stage. Cornstarch was applied to reduce the natural material’s stickiness and help handling after the glove was formed.

How does spray deposition make a glove?

The process follows a sequence that combines the geometry of a dipped former with the material placement of an additive-manufacturing system.

  1. Prepare the former. A ceramic hand former is heated before deposition. It provides the temporary hand and finger geometry but is not part of the finished glove.
  2. Condition the latex. The team adjusted commercial pre-vulcanised latex with deionised water and ammonium hydroxide during development so it could pass through the spray equipment continuously.
  3. Atomise and deposit. Compressed air carries the latex through the spray gun. Successive passes build a film over the heated former.
  4. Dry the deposited film. Water leaves the latex layer while it is supported on the former. Film continuity and thickness depend on how much material is deposited and how quickly it dries.
  5. Strip the glove. Once sufficiently dry, the elastomeric shell is removed from the former. The result is a freestanding latex glove rather than a coated ceramic hand.
  6. Apply handling aid. Cornstarch reduces tackiness so the finished glove can be handled without surfaces sticking together.

The study presents this as an alternative route to making thin freestanding elastomer films. Earlier inkjet, drop-on-demand, direct-ink-write and vat-photopolymerisation approaches had limitations for producing the continuous, flexible films required for gloves.

What is the production challenge?

The central bottleneck is keeping high-solids latex moving through a small spray nozzle without sacrificing film quality. In the initial trials, the commercial pre-vulcanised latex contained enough solids to clog the nozzle. A blocked nozzle interrupts deposition and can produce defects before an operator can recover the process.

Why dilution helped

Adding deionised water and ammonium hydroxide reduced the mixture’s resistance to spraying. At the development stage described in the paper, that adjustment was more suitable for continuous deposition than using the original high-solids formulation.

Why more dilution created new problems

There is no simple rule that “thinner is better.” Excess water made the deposited latex drip from the former, which produced non-uniform areas and increased material waste. The additional water also had to be evaporated, increasing drying time and the energy demand of a future process.

The trade-off is therefore three-sided: too little dilution risks nozzle blockage; too much can undermine dimensional control and waste more water; an intermediate formulation must be matched to nozzle geometry, air pressure, spray distance, former temperature and drying capacity. The study identifies this as a process-development issue, not as a solved scale-up recipe.

How strong were the printed gloves?

The investigators cut six specimens from each of three groups and measured tensile strength and maximum strain. The groups were the 3D-printed gloves, commercial examination gloves and commercial surgical gloves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Specimen group Mean tensile strength Mean maximum strain What the result means
3D-printed latex glove 19.2 MPa 767.0% Mechanical performance measured on six specimens
Commercial examination glove 22.7 MPa 707.6% Commercial benchmark measured on six specimens
Commercial surgical glove 25.9 MPa 782.7% Commercial benchmark measured on six specimens

In these tests, the printed glove’s tensile strength was lower than either commercial comparison, while its mean maximum strain was higher than the examination-glove result and close to the surgical-glove result. The values place the prototype in the range of the selected mechanical benchmarks, but they do not prove that it performs the same way in use.

Tensile testing does not establish resistance to pinholes, viruses, chemicals, puncture, tearing, ageing, donning damage or storage conditions. It also says nothing by itself about sterility, biocompatibility or the consistency of every glove made on a production line.

Does matching mechanical benchmarks make the glove medically usable?

No. The reported experiments establish mechanical properties only. They do not show that the printed glove passed a medical-glove barrier test, received regulatory authorization or is suitable for clinical use.

A separate 2025 publication describes a method for measuring medical-glove barrier performance while gloves are stretched and references ASTM F1671-22 conditions. That method indicates the type of additional evaluation a medical product might need, but it is not evidence that the 3D-PEP glove was tested with it or passed it.

Natural-rubber latex also contains proteins associated with latex-allergy concerns. A manufacturer would need to control residual proteins, chemical additives, powder or cornstarch treatment, and user exposure in accordance with the requirements of its target market. The prototype study does not provide those clinical or regulatory data.

What does the industrial scale-up estimate assume?

The paper includes a simplified manufacturing model rather than measurements from an operating 3D-PEP factory. The authors used conventional-line data supplied by Meditech Gloves and then inserted assumptions for a possible future 3D-PEP configuration.

Model input Assumed value Status
Material efficiency 90% Model assumption, not measured industrial yield
Latex concentration 55% total solids Model input
Spray hardware Two nozzles operating simultaneously Proposed configuration
Natural-rubber deposition Estimated 250 g/h Estimated throughput, not factory output
Former handling Continuous movement through deposition, drying and/or vulcanisation, then stripping Conceptual line arrangement
Average surgical-glove mass 10.5 g Model input
Average examination-glove mass 6.1 g Model input

Those assumptions let the authors explore how a modular line might be organised, but they cannot establish actual gloves-per-hour, labour requirements, scrap rates, maintenance intervals or cost per glove. In particular, the two-nozzle and 250-gram-per-hour figures should not be read as demonstrated production capacity.

What advantages do the authors propose?

The proposed line is modular: separate modules could make different products at the same time, and a change in one module might affect a smaller share of total output than maintenance on a large dipping line. The authors also suggest that product changes could be faster. These are potential design advantages; the study does not measure them in a commercial factory.

What does the 2% energy figure mean?

The paper calculates that changing to concentrated latex could reduce total energy consumption at a rubber-glove factory by 2%. This is a calculation based on the paper’s assumptions, not a measured saving from operating 3D-PEP at factory scale.

The reason concentration matters is straightforward: every unit of water added for sprayability must later be removed. A formulation that carries more rubber solids can reduce evaporation work, but only if it still atomises reliably and forms a uniform film. The nozzle-clogging result shows why concentration, spray reliability and drying energy must be optimised together rather than separately.

How does spray deposition compare with conventional dipping?

Conventional dipping is the mass-scale reference used for the commercial gloves in the study. The paper does not provide a complete, measured head-to-head factory comparison, so several important cells remain unknown.

Comparison axis 3D-PEP evidence What is established for conventional dipping in this study
Shape support Temporary heated ceramic former; glove is stripped after drying Commercial gloves supplied as benchmarks; detailed line settings not stated
Material delivery Spray deposition through nozzles; high-solids latex clogged during trials Not quantified in the paper
Concentration and drying Dilution improved deposition but increased dripping and evaporation demand when excessive Not quantified in the paper
Thickness control Authors report superior thickness control for their tested prototype Exact comparative thickness data not stated
Throughput Industrial value estimated with two nozzles and 250 g/h input Conventional production data informed the model, but no complete apples-to-apples result is reported
Product flexibility Modular production is proposed as a way to change products faster Not compared experimentally
Barrier performance Not tested in the reported prototype work Not evaluated as part of this comparison

The practical takeaway is that 3D-PEP offers a different way to place latex, not a proven replacement for dipping. A factory decision would require validated line speed, nozzle life, drying capacity, repeatability, cleaning procedures and quality-control data.

Are 3D-printed latex gloves ready for mass production?

Not on the evidence currently reported. The study demonstrates that a glove can be made and that its tested mechanical properties are credible compared with selected commercial samples. It does not demonstrate a scaled factory replacing conventional dipping.

Before adoption, manufacturers would need evidence in at least these areas:

  • Continuous operation: stable spraying over long runs without clogging, pressure drift or frequent manual intervention.
  • Uniformity: repeatable thickness across fingers, palm, cuff and glove-to-glove batches.
  • Drying economics: sufficient evaporation capacity without turning dilution into a major energy or cycle-time penalty.
  • Yield and waste: measured scrap, dripping losses, overspray and recovery rates.
  • Mechanical consistency: statistical results from production lots rather than six specimens from a prototype group.
  • Barrier and safety testing: validated pinhole, microbial-barrier, chemical, biocompatibility and allergy-related evaluations appropriate to the intended market.
  • Regulatory documentation: quality-system records, process validation and authorization for any medical or protective claim.

Until those data exist, the most accurate description is “laboratory proof of concept with a modeled industrial configuration.” Calling it a commercial product, a certified medical glove or a demonstrated low-energy replacement would go beyond the evidence.

What should manufacturers and buyers take from the result?

For manufacturers, the study identifies a tractable engineering problem rather than a dead end. Nozzle selection, latex rheology, solids concentration, atomisation settings, former temperature and drying must be developed as one process window. A formulation that sprays well but drips, wastes material or needs excessive evaporation is not yet production-ready.

For buyers, the appearance of a printed glove and a favorable tensile test are insufficient purchasing criteria. Ask for lot-level barrier results, intended-use certification, allergen controls, shelf-life data, packaging information and a description of how the supplier controls nozzle and thickness variation. The cited work does not show that 3D-printed gloves are currently offered for sale.

What is the most accurate bottom line?

3D-PEP shows that spray deposition can produce a freestanding natural-rubber latex glove with mechanical results broadly comparable to the commercial samples tested. Its major production challenge is controlling latex concentration: high-solids material clogged the nozzle, while excessive dilution caused dripping, unevenness, waste and extra drying demand. The next milestone is not another visual prototype but independently measured, continuous, regulated production performance.

Frequently asked questions

Can 3D printing make custom-sized latex gloves?

The process uses a shaped former, so changing the former could change the glove geometry. The study does not report digitally generated size ranges, automated fit grading or evidence that custom sizing is economically practical.

Was the diluted latex formula the final production recipe?

No universal recipe is established. Dilution with deionised water and ammonium hydroxide was reported as a development adjustment that supported continuous deposition, and the acceptable balance depends on equipment and drying conditions.

Can the same printer make nitrile or other synthetic gloves?

That has not been demonstrated by this study. Its material evidence concerns natural-rubber latex, so other elastomers would require separate formulation, sprayability, curing and safety validation.

What would a hospital need to see before evaluating these gloves?

Beyond tensile data, a hospital would normally need documented barrier testing, biocompatibility and allergen controls, regulatory status, lot-to-lot consistency, shelf-life evidence and packaging or sterilisation information relevant to the intended use. None of those requirements is established by the prototype’s mechanical tests alone.

Does the prototype prove that 3D printing uses less energy than dipping?

No. The 2% figure is a calculation for changing to concentrated latex under the paper’s assumptions. Actual energy use would depend on nozzle operation, drying equipment, line speed, cleaning and factory layout, none of which was measured on an industrial 3D-PEP line.
