To change your Microsoft 365 organization name, first decide what you mean by “name”: the name users see, the SharePoint and OneDrive URL prefix, or a billing-account label. Each is changed separately. Changing the tenant display name does not rename SharePoint URLs, and changing the SharePoint URL domain does not change email addresses.

1. Change the Microsoft 365 tenant display name
If you want to change the organization name users see, the Microsoft 365 Community Content instructions give this route: Microsoft 365 admin center > Settings > Org settings > Organization profile > Organization information. Update the organization information, including the “Name” field, and save. The article identifies this as the organization name, also called the tenant display name. Because this navigation comes from community-maintained content, check the labels in your tenant in case Microsoft has changed them.
The display name may appear in Entra sign-in and multifactor-authentication prompts, OneDrive sync surfaces, the Teams tenant switcher, Office save/open screens, and other Microsoft apps. Changes do not necessarily appear everywhere automatically or at once: the community article notes Teams tenant-switcher behavior as an exception, and says configured OneDrive sync clients may need to be unlinked and linked again. 2. Change the SharePoint and OneDrive URL domain
If your goal is to change a URL such as contoso.sharepoint.com to fabrikam.sharepoint.com, use Microsoft’s SharePoint tenant-rename process. This changes the SharePoint and OneDrive URL domain, not email addresses. Microsoft’s current documentation retrieved in 2026 says to use the current SharePoint Online Management Shell and connect with at least the SharePoint Administrator role.

Schedule the rename
- Choose a low-usage time. Microsoft recommends scheduling the change at least 24 hours in the future and no more than 30 days out.
- Connect to SharePoint Online using the current SharePoint Online Management Shell and an account with at least the SharePoint Administrator role.
- Run the tenant-rename command, replacing the placeholders with your new domain name and scheduled date and time:
Start-SPOTenantRename -DomainName <DomainName> -ScheduledDateTime <YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS>. - Check Microsoft’s current limitations and eligibility guidance before scheduling. The full limitations can affect whether your tenant can use the feature.

Plan for temporary service impact and limits
- The rename can take hours to days, depending on the number of sites and OneDrive users. Microsoft states this in its cmdlet documentation.
- Sites on the old domain are temporarily inaccessible while they are being renamed.
- Creating new sites or OneDrives is temporarily blocked during the process. That includes actions such as creating a new team or private channel.
- Microsoft’s current documentation retrieved in 2026 limits standard tenant rename to 10,000 combined SharePoint sites and OneDrive accounts. Advanced Tenant Rename supports any number of sites with SharePoint Advanced Management.
- Multi-Geo tenants and certain government or special clouds are among the excluded cases. Review Microsoft’s full, current limitations list before making a plan.
3. Change the billing account name
If you mean the label on your billing account, an account owner or contributor can go to Billing > Billing accounts, select the billing account, open Billing account details, edit the billing account name, and save. This changes the billing record; it does not change the tenant display name or SharePoint URLs. Microsoft also says changing the organization’s name may require support assistance. Names that are easy to confuse with the organization name
Primary domain in Microsoft Entra
Changing the primary domain is not the same as changing the tenant display name or SharePoint URL domain. An administrator with the Domain Name Administrator role or higher can set a verified custom domain as primary if it is not federated. This changes the default domain used for newly created users; it does not rename existing usernames. See Microsoft Entra’s custom-domain guidance.
The onmicrosoft.com domain
Adding an onmicrosoft.com domain does not, by itself, rename the tenant everywhere or change the SharePoint URL. Microsoft’s current documentation retrieved in 2026 allows up to five such domains and says a created domain currently cannot be deleted. Check Microsoft’s onmicrosoft.com domain guidance before adding one.

Multitenant organization name
If your organization uses Microsoft’s multitenant organization (MTO) feature, the MTO name is a separate setting. An owner tenant can edit it under Settings > Org settings > Organization profile > Multitenant collaboration. See Microsoft’s multitenant organization setup guidance.
