What are the three AI-chip stocks?
The three companies represent different ways to invest in expanding artificial-intelligence infrastructure. Nvidia sells general-purpose AI GPUs and the software ecosystem around them. Valuation and risks
The article places Nvidia at about 14 times next year’s expected earnings and says management expects another 70% revenue increase in fiscal 2028. Both numbers are forward-looking snapshots from the article’s publication period. The main risks are a slowdown in AI infrastructure spending, customers developing alternatives, pressure on pricing and Nvidia losing some of the software, hardware and developer-network advantages that reinforce its ecosystem.
Why is Broadcom a custom-chip and networking play?

Forecasts, valuation and risks
Management’s cited outlook is $115 billion of AI revenue in 2027, compared with $58 billion expected for fiscal 2026. The article values Broadcom at about 11 times fiscal 2028 expected earnings per share of $30. Those estimates depend on hyperscalers and AI laboratories continuing to order custom silicon and networking equipment. Customer concentration, delivery execution and a slower AI build-out could make the targets difficult to reach.

What makes Cerebras different—and riskier?
Cerebras is the high-growth, high-risk option. Its Wafer-Scale Engine is described as a dinner-plate-sized processor designed to increase speed and data throughput by placing an unusually large amount of compute on one wafer.
Growth and commercial commitments
- Core cloud revenue grew 287% year over year in Q2 2026, helped by a major OpenAI deal, according to the article.
- Cerebras reported 75% revenue growth in 2025 and 74% growth in Q2 2026.
- The company has $25 billion in future revenue commitments and expects core revenue to more than triple in 2027, as reported by the Motley Fool article.
- Cerebras says its new CS-4 system is “up to 30 times faster than GPU systems.” That is a company claim reported by the article, not an independent benchmark and not a result that applies to every workload.
Why the risk is higher
Cerebras is still losing money and trades at about 32 times this year’s revenue estimates, according to the article. A revenue multiple is not directly comparable with Nvidia’s or Broadcom’s forward price-to-earnings figures: revenue does not show operating costs, financing needs or eventual profit. Cerebras also faces execution risk, customer-concentration risk and the possibility that larger competitors or customers’ internal projects reduce demand for its architecture.

Nvidia is the clearest choice for investors who prioritize an established platform, broad customer adoption and current profitability. Its premium position can still be vulnerable if AI buyers reduce orders or competing accelerators become good enough.
For custom silicon and infrastructure breadth: Broadcom
Broadcom suits investors who want exposure to customer-designed chips and the networking layer that connects them. The thesis relies on large customers continuing to outsource difficult design and packaging work and on management converting its revenue targets into profitable sales.

For asymmetric but speculative growth: Cerebras
Cerebras may appeal to investors willing to accept losses and a much richer sales multiple in exchange for the possibility that wafer-scale systems win important workloads. Position sizing, liquidity and the risk of missing its commitments matter more here than headline growth alone.
What should you check before buying?
- Update the numbers. Recheck each company’s latest filings, earnings guidance, share price and valuation; the figures above are not live quotations.
- Separate evidence from targets. Distinguish reported historical growth from management forecasts and company performance claims.
- Compare like with like. Use earnings, cash flow and balance-sheet measures for profitable companies; do not treat Cerebras’s revenue multiple as equivalent to a price-to-earnings ratio.
- Assess concentration. Review dependence on a few hyperscalers or AI laboratories and whether commitments are cancellable, staged or conditional.
- Plan for a cycle. Semiconductor demand can fall even while long-term industry sales rise, so avoid relying on one stock or one spending forecast.
- Set a review rule. Revisit the thesis when product road maps, customer commitments, margins or capital-spending plans materially change, rather than reacting only to daily price moves.

Are these three stocks suitable for a retirement account?
Suitability depends on your time horizon, diversification, tax rules and tolerance for drawdowns, not simply on an AI theme. A concentrated position in any one semiconductor company can behave very differently from a broad-market fund during an industry downturn.

How can I tell whether Cerebras’s $25 billion commitments will become revenue?
Read the company’s filings for the identity of counterparties, delivery schedules, cancellation terms and the portion recognized as backlog versus nonbinding expectations. Commitments are not the same as cash received or guaranteed profit.
Why might a profitable chip company still fall sharply?
Investors price future growth, so a stock can decline when orders, margins or guidance merely disappoint high expectations. Semiconductor shares can also react to inventory corrections, export controls, interest-rate changes and customers delaying data-center projects.
Can custom AI chips replace Nvidia GPUs entirely?
Custom accelerators can be economical for specific, repeatable workloads, while general-purpose GPUs remain useful for varied models and software environments. The likely outcome is workload- and customer-specific competition rather than one architecture eliminating every other option.
