T-Mobile is the best major U.S. mobile network overall in PCMag’s 2026 Mobile Network Index, scoring 6.84 nationally, ahead of AT&T at 4.81 and Verizon at 4.75. That is a national ranking, not a guarantee about service at your home or on your commute: T-Mobile leads in 45 states and 17 of 19 major metros, while AT&T and Verizon win some local markets.
If you’re choosing a carrier, use the national result to narrow the field, then check coverage and performance in the places you actually use your phone. The ranking combines speed, coverage, price, and customer satisfaction, so it answers a broader question than which network is fastest in one test.
How did the major U.S. mobile networks rank in 2026?
PCMag’s 2026 Mobile Network Index puts T-Mobile first among the major carriers, with a national score well ahead of AT&T and Verizon. The scores are index results, not percentages or a promise of a particular download speed.

|---|---|---|
| T-Mobile | 6.84 | Highest-scoring major carrier nationally |
| AT&T | 4.81 | Second among major carriers nationally |
| Verizon | 4.75 | Third among major carriers nationally |
In this index, T-Mobile’s lead reflects its results across speed, 5G footprint, pricing, and customer satisfaction. The score is useful for comparing the carriers within this particular study; it should not be read as a universal measure of service quality or as a prediction for every address.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How did PCMag calculate its 2026 ranking?
PCMag analyzed 2,014,940 tests collected from January 1 through June 30, 2026. Its index combines four factors, with speed receiving the largest individual weight.
| Index component | Weight |
|---|---|
| Speed Index | 40% |
| Coverage Index | 20% |
| Price Index | 20% |
| Reader Satisfaction Index | 20% |
CoverageMap.com and BestPhonePlans contributed mapped speed and coverage tests and pricing data; PCMag added Readers’ Choice satisfaction results. PCMag also recorded the device used for each test. That matters because the carrier network is only part of the connection: a phone’s supported bands and capabilities affect what it can use.
The formula makes the ranking a combined assessment rather than a pure speed contest. A different study can favor a carrier because it measures a different set of outcomes, samples a different group of users or locations, or gives different weight to reliability and experience.

Does the best nationwide network also win where I live?
Not necessarily. PCMag names T-Mobile the national winner, but its state and metro results show why a national position cannot settle a local buying decision.
State results
T-Mobile is PCMag’s top network in 45 states. AT&T wins Arkansas and Oregon; Verizon wins Vermont and Mississippi. Alaska is excluded because it did not meet the test threshold, so the ranking does not establish a winner there.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Metro results
T-Mobile leads in 17 of the 19 major metros PCMag measured. Verizon leads in Detroit and the San Francisco Bay Area. Chicago has the highest major-carrier index score in the metro results: T-Mobile scored 8.32 there.
These results identify winners within PCMag’s test data, not every neighborhood, building, road, or indoor location in a state or metro. Before switching, check coverage at your home, workplace, and the routes you travel. If you depend on service in a particular place, a national ranking should be a starting point rather than the deciding evidence.

PCMag’s 2026 results favor T-Mobile overall, and its index gives speed the largest weight. But an overall index score does not establish that T-Mobile will be faster than the other carriers at every location or for every phone.
Speed and latency also answer different questions. Download and upload performance matter for transferring files, streaming, and sending media; latency affects how quickly a connection responds, which can be noticeable in gaming and video calls. The supplied PCMag summary does not give carrier-by-carrier speed or latency figures, so it cannot support a precise numerical speed comparison among the three.
For your own decision, look for local test results and check that the phone you plan to use is compatible with the carrier’s network. PCMag’s test results include the devices used, underscoring that a network ranking is not independent of handset capability.

Why do other 2026 reports name different winners?
There is no single ranking method shared by every testing organization. A July 2026 comparison of current studies found that RootMetrics tied AT&T and Verizon for first in its first-half-2026 report, while Opensignal and Ookla gave top overall honors to T-Mobile.
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Wireless Network Quality Performance Study surveyed 20,050 customers and reported nine or fewer problems per 100 uses. Its regional results were mixed: T-Mobile and Verizon tied in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and West; Verizon led in North Central; and T-Mobile led in the Southeast and Southwest. J.D. Power senior director Carl Lepper said, “Despite generational differences in the types of problems experienced, one thing is clear: wireless network quality is strong.”
Those findings do not cancel one another out. PCMag’s index blends mapped network data, price, and reader satisfaction; J.D. Power reports customer-perceived problems by region; other services use their own measurements and scoring. If your priority is one particular region or outcome, give greater weight to evidence that measures that region or outcome instead of treating any national award as a universal verdict.
Which carrier should I choose for my needs?
Start with the place you need service, then compare the outcomes and plan conditions that matter to you. A practical shortlist should account for coverage, performance, price, reliability, satisfaction, and your phone—not just the national winner.
- Check local availability first. Compare the carriers’ coverage where you live, work, and travel. Pay particular attention to locations where losing service would be a problem.
- Match performance to your use. Consider download and upload needs for streaming or file transfers, and latency if you make video calls or play online games. A speed result from another location may not predict your experience.
- Compare the plan, not only the carrier. Review the price and the terms that can affect use, including deprioritization and hotspot limits. The PCMag summary does not provide the detailed terms of individual plans, so verify those directly before enrolling.
- Consider reliability and customer experience. Read results with their measurement method in mind: mapped tests, customer surveys, and other network studies do not measure exactly the same thing.
- Confirm phone compatibility. Check that your handset supports the relevant 5G bands and that the carrier accepts your device, especially if you intend to bring an unlocked phone.
If you can’t determine which network performs best in a specific place from available coverage information, prioritize a way to verify that location before making a long-term decision. A state-level win does not answer whether service reaches a particular room or route.

What is the best cheap phone carrier?
There is no single cheapest option established by the PCMag results. Among the MVNOs in its 2026 index, Mint Mobile scored 7.70 nationally, Google Fi scored 7.56, and Visible ranked sixth overall. Cricket had the best average price per line, at just over $30.
Those figures describe different things: index scores compare overall performance in PCMag’s framework, while Cricket’s figure is an average price per line. It does not establish that Cricket has the lowest price for every household or plan. The summary does not state the detailed plan terms or the methodology behind that average, so compare the current price and conditions for the number of lines and features you need.
An MVNO is a mobile virtual network operator: it sells wireless service under its own plans while relying on another carrier’s network. The available data’s figures identify MVNO results but do not specify every underlying network assignment or plan condition. Check the provider’s current network and terms directly, particularly for hotspot use, priority during congestion, and device compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I interpret the ranking before switching?
PCMag’s ranking is a useful, dated snapshot: it covers tests from the first half of 2026, rather than continuously measuring current service. Prices, coverage, plan terms, and device compatibility can change, so confirm them for the offer and location you are considering.
- Use national scores for context. They show how carriers performed across the study’s combined factors, not what will happen at your address.
- Use state and metro results to narrow choices. They provide more local context, but still do not establish performance at every street or indoor location.
- Separate test findings from plan details. A carrier’s network result does not by itself tell you a plan’s hotspot allowance, price for your household, or how it handles congestion.
- Check the phone alongside the network. The same carrier may not deliver the same experience on every handset.
For a reader choosing among the three major networks, PCMag’s evidence points to T-Mobile overall. For a reader choosing service at one specific address, the local coverage and device checks are more decisive than the national order.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does deprioritization mean on a cell phone plan?
It refers to a plan’s data being given lower priority than other traffic when a network is busy. The effect depends on congestion and the plan’s terms, so check the provider’s wording rather than assuming every customer will notice it in the same way.
Can I keep my unlocked phone if I switch carriers?
Possibly, but being unlocked alone does not guarantee compatibility. Confirm that the phone supports the network bands the new carrier uses and that the carrier accepts that specific model.
Are MVNOs slower than the big carriers?
The label alone does not establish a particular speed. Performance depends on the underlying network, location, device, and plan conditions; compare the provider’s current terms and local evidence.
How often do mobile network rankings change?
Rankings can differ as test windows, coverage, pricing, and methods change. PCMag’s scores discussed here cover January through June 2026, so they describe that period rather than guaranteeing performance later.
