Funny WiFi names are custom SSIDs—the labels nearby devices see when they scan for networks. The 150 ideas below range from clever LAN puns and family jokes to nerdy, food, guest, and gamer names; choose a short one that reveals no personal information, and keep your real Wi-Fi password separate.
An SSID personalizes a network, but it does not make the network secure. Use a strong password and WPA2 or WPA3 security, and consider putting the joke on a guest network when visitors need access.
Key takeaways
- An SSID is the name that identifies a wireless network to nearby devices, so a funny Wi-Fi name changes the label, not the network’s security.
- Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi names must contain 1–31 characters, while router limits vary; some NETGEAR equipment allows up to 32 characters.
- Use a guest network for public-facing jokes and QR signs, and never publish the password for your primary network.
- Do not use an SSID that reveals your name, address, location, router brand, or router model.
- Changing the SSID or password can require devices to reconnect, although reusing the old name and password can preserve connections during some Nest Wifi setups.

How do you choose the best funny WiFi name?
The best funny WiFi name is short, recognizable, easy to type, and harmless when displayed in a nearby-network list. A name that works for a private home network may be less appropriate for an office, apartment building, vacation rental, or guest room.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Use case | Good naming approach | Names to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Primary home network | A readable joke that does not identify you or your equipment | Your full name, address, apartment number, router model, or a password |
| Guest network | A welcoming name such as “Scan Me Maybe” or “The Hospitality Network” | A name that suggests guests should use the primary network |
| Family network | A light, understandable name such as “The Family Bandwidth” | Private information about children, routines, or the home’s location |
| Office or rental property | A professional joke that guests can identify quickly | Threats, offensive language, misleading surveillance claims, or confidential business details |
What should you avoid putting in a Wi-Fi name?
A Wi-Fi name should not reveal your identity, physical location, router manufacturer, or router model. CISA’s home router security guidance recommends avoiding SSIDs that identify the owner or location. Avoid putting a Wi-Fi password in the SSID as well, because nearby people can see network names even when they cannot join the network.
A funny SSID is not a security control. Use a unique, strong Wi-Fi password and WPA2 or WPA3 security; CISA also recommends changing default credentials and disabling obsolete protocols such as WEP where the router supports that option. A humorous name can make a network memorable, but the password and encryption protect access.
How long can a Wi-Fi name be?
There is no single character limit for every router. Google says Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi network names must be 1–31 characters long, while NETGEAR documents a 31-character limit for some controller-managed networks and up to 32 characters for certain standalone access points.

- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Check the documentation or administration app for the exact router model. Spaces, punctuation, and symbols also vary by router, firmware, controller, and client device. Google’s Wi-Fi network-name instructions warn users to avoid accidental leading or trailing spaces, while some NETGEAR controller configurations do not allow spaces. For maximum compatibility, choose a short name using ordinary letters and numbers.
How do you change a Wi-Fi name?
Open the router’s administration app or web interface, find the wireless, Wi-Fi, or network settings, edit the SSID or network-name field, and save the change. The exact labels and menu path depend on the manufacturer. TP-Link documents editable wireless network-name and password fields in its wireless-settings instructions.
- Choose the name from the list above and check its length and characters.
- Sign in to the router app or administration page.
- Open Wi-Fi, Wireless, Network, or a similarly named settings page.
- Replace the current SSID with the new name.
- Save or apply the setting, then reconnect devices to the renamed network.
Changing the SSID, changing the password, or changing both can disconnect phones, televisions, smart-home devices, and computers until each device joins the new network. Google documents reusing an old network name and password during some Nest Wifi setups to reduce the need to reconnect devices, but retaining an old password is not a good trade if the password may have been exposed or compromised. Google’s Nest Wifi setup documentation explains the reconnection convenience and its setup context.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
How should you share funny guest Wi-Fi safely?
Use a separate guest network when visitors need internet access, rather than putting the primary-network password on a public sign. Guest isolation varies by router, so enable the router’s guest-device isolation or local-network access controls when available and review what those settings permit.

A Wi-Fi QR code can encode the network name, security type, and password so guests can scan instead of typing credentials. A Wi-Fi QR-code generator for guest access signs describes this use, and Wi-Fi QR-code software such as the Wi-Fi QR Code Maker app can create a scannable code. A physical Wi-Fi QR code sign is useful in a guest room, office, party space, or vacation rental, but a sign does not improve encryption or signal strength.
Before printing a QR code, verify that the code contains the guest SSID and guest-network password rather than the primary credentials. Replace the guest password after a large event or whenever too many unknown devices remain connected.

Changing the SSID or password can disconnect devices and require them to reconnect. Reusing an old SSID and password can reduce reconnection work during some Google Nest Wifi setups, but do not reuse a password that may be compromised.
Is a funny Wi-Fi name secure?
No. A funny Wi-Fi name is only a label and does not encrypt traffic or prevent unauthorized access. Use a strong unique password with WPA2 or WPA3, change default credentials, and avoid obsolete security protocols such as WEP where supported.
The Bottom Line
Pick a short, readable joke for the SSID, keep personal and router details out of the name, and use a separate guest network when visitors need access. The funny name is decoration; a strong password and WPA2 or WPA3 security do the real protective work.
