Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best GST billing software depends on what you sell and how you operate. For a freelancer, a fast invoice-and-payment tool such as Zoho Invoice may be enough. A retailer usually needs barcode billing, stock control, and printer support. A wholesaler or distributor may need godown management, batch and expiry tracking, credit control, purchase workflows, and multi-rate GST billing. A growing SME may need full accounting, bank reconciliation, multiple users, multiple GSTINs, e-invoicing, and e-way bills.
For most small businesses, Zoho Books is the strongest cloud accounting choice, TallyPrime is the safer established accounting and offline-workflow choice, BUSY or Marg ERP suit inventory-heavy businesses, and Vyapar or myBillBook are easier mobile-first billing options. Service businesses should also consider Zoho Invoice, Refrens, or ProfitBooks instead of paying for a full ERP.
Quick picks

How this list was made: This is a researched shortlist based on documented feature fit for Indian retailers, wholesalers, distributors, service businesses and growing SMEs. It is not a hands-on test, uptime ranking, tax-filing test or customer-support review. Vendor claims such as free access, user limits and certifications should be independently verified before purchase.
First, understand the difference between GST billing and e-invoicing
A software package can create a GST invoice without being suitable for mandatory e-invoicing. These are related but different tasks.

- GST invoice creation: The software calculates and displays applicable GST components such as CGST, SGST or IGST, and helps you include details such as GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes, invoice numbers, customer information and place-of-supply data.
- E-invoicing: For covered taxpayers and transactions, invoice data must be reported to an Invoice Registration Portal. The portal returns an Invoice Registration Number, commonly called an IRN, and a QR code. The data is also shared with GST and e-way-bill systems.
- E-way bills: These support the applicable movement-of-goods documentation workflow. They are especially important for traders, wholesalers, distributors and manufacturers, but the exact obligation depends on the transaction and current rules.
The official IRP material states that the e-invoicing mandate applies to taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover of ₹5 crore or more from August 1, 2023, subject to applicable rules and exemptions. Thresholds, exemptions, implementation rules and covered document types can change. Do not choose software solely because its homepage says GST compliant; confirm your current position with official GST or IRP guidance and a qualified tax professional.
Even when software automates tax calculations, the business remains responsible for the correctness of its GSTIN, tax rates, HSN/SAC classification, exemption treatment, place of supply, invoice series, returns and reported data.
Detailed reviews: the 15 best options
1. Zoho Books — best overall cloud accounting choice
Zoho Books is the strongest all-round choice for a small business that wants more than invoice generation. Its India edition supports GSTINs, HSN/SAC codes, CGST/SGST/IGST calculations, expense tracking, bank feeds, accounting reports and GST return workflows. Its documented GST workflow covers reports and processes associated with GSTR-1, GSTR-2, GSTR-2B, GSTR-3B and GSTR-9.
Zoho Books also supports e-invoicing and e-way-bill workflows, with the vendor describing Zoho as a registered GST Suvidha Provider connected to the IRP. That does not mean every plan includes every feature, so confirm e-invoicing eligibility, the number of GSTINs, users, automation limits and accountant access before subscribing.

It is particularly attractive for a growing company or one operating with multiple GSTINs.
Skip it if: You only need rapid counter billing for a tiny shop and do not need ledgers, banking or broader financial reporting.
2. TallyPrime — best for established accounting and offline workflows
TallyPrime remains a practical fit for businesses and accountants that already work in a mature ledger-and-inventory environment. Its GST setup covers registration details, rates, e-invoice configuration and e-way-bill details. Its documented e-invoicing workflow can generate IRNs and QR codes for sales invoices, POS invoices, debit notes, credit notes and certain related sales documents.
The advantage is depth and familiarity: established offices can retain structured ledgers, inventory, reporting and accounting processes rather than bolting billing onto a separate app. The trade-off is implementation. Licensing, backups, multi-user configuration, data migration and staff training deserve as much attention as the invoice screen.
Choose it if: Your accountant already uses Tally, you prefer an offline-first office workflow, or you need mature accounting and inventory controls.
Skip it if: Your business is a solo consultancy looking mainly for recurring invoices and payment reminders.
3. BUSY — best for GST accounting plus inventory control
BUSY sits between straightforward billing and a more complete business-management system. Its documented feature set includes GST accounting, invoicing, inventory, bank reconciliation, reporting, POS, barcode or QR scanning, payment tracking, WhatsApp sharing and multiple GST rates on one invoice. The vendor’s Standard edition is described as including complete GST functionality, direct GSTR-1/IFF upload, automatic e-invoice and e-way-bill generation and reconciliation features.
That combination makes BUSY especially relevant to retailers, wholesalers and distributors that cannot separate stock accuracy from accounting accuracy. A business should still compare the exact edition and deployment model: mobile, online, SQL, e-invoice and related functions may not be included in every package.

Vyapar is designed around the speed and simplicity that shopkeepers, traders and small operators often want. Its documented workflows cover GST-compliant invoices, e-invoices, e-way bills, POS billing, barcode scanning, inventory, payment tracking and migration from other software. Its e-invoice workflow can use customer, item, price, GST-rate and tax information already entered in the application.
This makes it a good starting point when the immediate problem is replacing handwritten bills, spreadsheets or a basic cash register. It can also provide a bridge to inventory and payment tracking without requiring a full ERP implementation on day one.

6. Marg ERP — best for inventory-heavy retail, distribution and trade
Marg ERP is aimed at businesses where stock is the hard part of the job. Its feature set covers GST billing and filing, inventory, batch and expiry management, barcode management, auto e-invoicing, WhatsApp invoicing, multi-location operations and industry-oriented workflows. That is particularly relevant to pharmacies, distributors, manufacturers and retailers handling a large catalogue or regulated stock.
Its editions include Nano, Basic, Silver and Gold levels with different company, user, bill and multi-location limits. Confirm what your chosen edition includes, and ask about implementation assistance and annual renewal charges before migrating a live business.
Choose it if: You need detailed stock, batch, expiry, barcode or multi-location controls.
Skip it if: You are a freelancer or service-only firm with no meaningful inventory operation.
7. ClearOne — best for focused GST invoicing and compliance
ClearOne is a focused alternative for businesses that want structured GST billing without necessarily adopting a broad ERP. Its documented tools include customizable invoices, HSN/SAC lookup, GST access, e-way bills, e-invoices, delivery challans, estimates and bills of supply. The product also highlights updates based on GST notifications.
That focus can be an advantage when invoice compliance is the main requirement. Before selecting it over Zoho Books, TallyPrime or BUSY, verify the depth of general accounting, inventory, reconciliation, multiple users and multiple GSTIN support in the plan you are considering.
Choose it if: You want a compliance-oriented invoicing workflow and do not need a large ERP.
Skip it if: Inventory, bank reconciliation or full accounting is central to daily operations.
8. Refrens — best for cloud invoicing and filing-ready reports
Refrens is particularly well matched to agencies, consultants, freelancers, exporters and small service teams. Its documented GST capabilities include automatic CGST/SGST/IGST calculation, HSN/SAC support, e-invoices with IRNs and QR codes, e-way bills, bulk e-invoice generation, GSTR-1 and GSTR-2B reports, reconciliation, payment tracking and accounting functions.
Cloud invoicing, payment follow-up and professional documents are the main attraction. A product-led retailer or distributor should not assume that those strengths translate into the same stock, batch, godown or purchase depth offered by BUSY or Marg ERP.
Choose it if: You bill clients regularly and value online access, payment tracking and compliance reports.
Skip it if: Your operation depends on detailed warehouse, batch, expiry or counter-POS workflows.
9. Zoho Invoice — best free option for basic GST invoicing
Zoho Invoice is a strong fit for freelancers, consultants and small service businesses that need professional invoices rather than a full accounting suite. Zoho’s India pricing information describes it as free for Indian businesses and lists GST-compliant invoices, email and WhatsApp sharing, UPI/card/net-banking payment collection, reminders, quotations, recurring invoices, expense and time tracking, customer portals, and mobile and desktop access.
The important boundary is scope. Zoho Invoice should not be presented as a substitute for Zoho Books when you need inventory, full accounting, bank reconciliation or broader GST-return workflows.
Choose it if: You send recurring or one-off service invoices and want payment collection and reminders at minimal cost.
Skip it if: You sell physical goods and need stock, purchase, warehouse or complete ledger management.

Choose by operational requirement
- Need only invoices and payment reminders? Do not buy an ERP. Start with Zoho Invoice, ProfitBooks, Swipe or Refrens.
- Need fast counter sales? Prioritize POS speed, barcode input, invoice reprints, offline behavior, thermal-printer compatibility and stock updates.
- Need godowns or warehouses? Look closely at BUSY, Marg ERP, TallyPrime and the higher tiers of myBillBook. Confirm transfers, stock adjustments, purchase orders and location-wise reporting.
- Sell medicines, food or other dated goods? Batch and expiry tracking is more important than a polished invoice template. Marg ERP and inventory-focused alternatives deserve closer comparison.
- Have multiple GST registrations? Confirm whether the software supports multiple GSTINs under the plan, and whether reports and invoice series remain separated correctly.
- Need bank reconciliation? Favor Zoho Books, TallyPrime or BUSY over a basic billing-only product.
- Need e-invoicing? Confirm that your taxpayer profile and document type are covered, that the chosen plan can connect to the IRP, and that the software returns and prints the IRN and QR code correctly.
Buying checklist before you subscribe
- Map your transactions. List sales invoices, bills of supply, quotations, pro forma documents, credit notes, debit notes, purchases, returns, payments and delivery challans.
- Check your GST configuration. Confirm the business GSTIN, state, tax registrations, invoice series, HSN/SAC master, product tax rates, exemptions and place-of-supply rules.
- Test real tax scenarios. Create an intra-state sale using CGST and SGST, an interstate sale using IGST, an exempt or nil-rated transaction if relevant, a discount, a credit note and a return. Have an accountant review the output.
- Check inventory depth. Ask whether the software supports units, opening stock, purchase orders, stock transfers, low-stock alerts, batch numbers, expiry dates, godowns and negative-stock controls.
- Check compliance boundaries. Ask specifically whether e-invoice, IRN, QR code, e-way bill, GSTR-1, GSTR-2B, GSTR-3B, reconciliation and direct upload are included in your plan. Do not treat an ordinary GST PDF as an e-invoice.
- Check access and control. Confirm the number of users, roles, approvals, audit history, branch permissions, accountant access, mobile/desktop support and offline behavior.
- Check hardware. If you use a counter printer, barcode reader, cash drawer or weighing device, confirm operating-system, mobile, connection and driver compatibility before buying the software.
- Check migration and exit. Ask for sample exports of customers, suppliers, items, invoices, ledgers, payments and tax reports. A cheap system is risky if you cannot retrieve your records.
- Calculate the total cost. Include GST on the subscription, annual versus monthly billing, extra users, extra companies, additional GSTINs, desktop access, godowns, e-invoicing, implementation, training, support and renewal pricing.
- Run a parallel period. Keep the old records available while you process a controlled set of transactions in the new system. Reconcile invoice totals, tax summaries, receivables and closing stock before making it the only source of truth.
Useful billing hardware for retailers
A billing application may support POS and barcode workflows, but you may still need physical equipment. A thermal receipt printer for billing can speed up counter receipts when the selected software supports the printer’s connection method and print language. Confirm whether you need USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or a network printer; whether it works with Android, Windows or both; the supported paper width; and whether the application can print the required invoice format.
A printer is an output device, not a GST-compliance tool. It does not create an IRN, validate a tax rate or make an invoice an e-invoice. Also consider a barcode scanner if your catalogue is large, but verify that scanned item codes map reliably to the software’s item master and stock units.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsImplementation mistakes that cause billing problems
Wrong tax master
Importing a catalogue with incorrect GST rates or HSN/SAC codes can create consistently wrong invoices. Start with a small verified master and have the person responsible for tax review the setup.
Duplicate or incorrectly reported e-invoices
Do not assume that pressing Generate twice is harmless. Check whether an IRN was already returned, retain the response and follow the software’s documented correction or cancellation process. The correct response depends on the document and current IRP rules.
Stock and accounting are disconnected
A billing app may reduce inventory without recording purchases, returns, damages or transfers correctly. Reconcile physical stock and ledger balances after migration, not only after a year-end surprise.
Choosing on the basis of a free tier alone
Free invoice creation may exclude inventory, desktop access, godowns, e-invoice, e-way bills, exports, extra users or support. Price the workflow you actually need, including renewal and add-on costs.
Assuming automation replaces review
Software can calculate and report from the data it receives. It cannot reliably decide every exemption, classification, place-of-supply issue or business-specific tax treatment. A GST accountant for small business or qualified tax professional should review the initial configuration and unusual transactions.
How to compare plans without getting misled
Feature lists are often written at the product-family level, while your required function may be limited to a specific edition or paid tier. For every finalist, ask the vendor to confirm these points in writing:
- Is the feature available in the exact plan, or only in a higher edition?
- Does e-invoicing mean direct IRP connectivity, or only a document prepared for manual reporting?
- Are e-way bills generated automatically, imported, or created in a separate workflow?
- How many companies, GSTINs, branches, godowns, users and devices are included?
- Can you export complete records in a usable format if you leave?
- What happens when the internet is unavailable?
- Are support, onboarding, training, implementation and renewal charges separate?
- Can the software handle your invoice series, credit notes, returns, payments and reports without workarounds?
Prices, plan names, free limits, supported devices and integrations change frequently. Treat any displayed starting price as a snapshot, and check the current official plan page for taxes, billing frequency, promotional pricing and renewal terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best GST billing software for a small business in India?
For most growing small businesses that want cloud accounting, Zoho Books is the strongest overall choice. TallyPrime is better suited to established accounting and offline-first workflows, BUSY and Marg ERP to inventory-heavy businesses, Vyapar and myBillBook to mobile-first retail billing, and Zoho Invoice or Refrens to freelancers and service firms.
Is GST billing software the same as e-invoicing software?
No. GST billing software can create an invoice showing GST calculations, while e-invoicing involves reporting covered invoices to the Invoice Registration Portal and receiving an IRN and QR code. Which GST billing software is free?
Zoho Invoice is described by Zoho as free for Indian businesses for its invoicing-focused workflow. GoGSTBill advertises lifetime-free GST billing. myBillBook advertises free invoice creation with additional capabilities in paid tiers. Verify current limits, data export, support, backups and whether e-invoice or e-way-bill functions are included before relying on a free plan.
Do freelancers need full GST accounting software?
Usually not. A freelancer may need GST invoices, quotations, recurring billing, payment links, reminders, expense tracking and basic reports. Zoho Invoice, Refrens and ProfitBooks can be more proportionate choices. Upgrade to a full accounting product when you need inventory, bank reconciliation, multiple GSTINs, detailed ledgers or broader return workflows.
What should retailers check besides GST features?
Check counter speed, barcode scanning, stock updates, purchase and return handling, offline behavior, thermal-printer compatibility, invoice reprints, payment QR support, user permissions and data backup. A tax feature list does not tell you whether the software will work smoothly at a busy counter.
The Bottom Line
Choose the simplest system that correctly handles your real transactions today and has a credible upgrade path. Zoho Books, TallyPrime, BUSY and Marg ERP are the leading directions for accounting and inventory depth; Vyapar, myBillBook and SaralBill are practical for fast small-shop billing; Zoho Invoice, Refrens and ProfitBooks make more sense for service businesses. Before paying, test your actual GST scenarios, confirm e-invoice and e-way-bill eligibility, check exports and backups, and have a qualified accountant review the configuration.
