There is no single best network diagnostics tool for every organization. PRTG, OpManager, SolarWinds, Datadog, and similar platforms provide continuous monitoring, while Wireshark, PingPlotter, Nmap, iPerf3, and MTR investigate specific faults. The right choice depends on whether you need alerting, packet analysis, path testing, discovery, throughput measurement, or cloud visibility.

Network diagnostics is a broad category. A monitoring platform can tell you that a switch, WAN link, server, or application has degraded; a diagnostic utility helps explain why. Treating a packet analyzer and an enterprise observability suite as interchangeable usually leads to the wrong purchase.

The recommendations below use pricing and product information supplied for August 16, 2026. Prices, editions, free-tier limits, and packaging can change, so verify the vendor’s current terms before purchasing.

Key takeaways

  • PRTG is a strong all-in-one self-hosted choice for small and medium organizations, but its free edition is limited to 100 sensors rather than 100 devices.
  • Wireshark and tcpdump analyze packets, while PRTG, OpManager, SolarWinds, Zabbix, and LibreNMS provide continuous infrastructure monitoring; these categories complement rather than replace one another.
  • Datadog is strongest when network telemetry must be correlated with cloud infrastructure, applications, logs, and user-facing services.
  • PingPlotter and MTR are suited to intermittent latency, routing, and packet-loss investigations, while iPerf3 measures active TCP or UDP throughput between two endpoints.
  • Free or open-source software has no license fee in many cases, but hosting, storage, upgrades, security controls, support, and staff time remain part of the total cost.

What counts as a network diagnostics tool?

A network diagnostics tool may monitor availability, discover assets, analyze paths, capture packets, inspect protocols, measure throughput, collect traffic flows, validate configurations, or correlate network behavior with cloud and application telemetry. Those functions answer different operational questions.

What should an organization monitor?

A useful monitoring design covers more than whether an address responds to ping. Depending on the environment, monitor device availability, interface utilization, errors, discards, CPU and memory, round-trip latency, packet loss, jitter, DNS resolution, DHCP availability, WAN and VPN health, routing or BGP state, wireless access points and clients, flow data, application reachability, TLS certificate expiry, historical trends, and capacity thresholds.

SNMP can expose interface counters, hardware health, CPU, memory, and environmental data, but SNMP alone does not show user experience, packet-level protocol faults, every cloud-network relationship, or the behavior of an encrypted application. SNMP monitoring, flow collection, synthetic tests, logs, and packet analysis are complementary sources of evidence.

What are the best network diagnostics tools?

The best network diagnostics tool depends on the operational problem. The table provides a use-case-based shortlist rather than pretending that a packet analyzer, a path tester, and a monitoring platform can be ranked on one scale.

1. PRTG Network Monitor: best all-in-one paid or free monitor

PRTG Network Monitor is best for small and medium organizations that want broad self-hosted monitoring from one platform. PRTG monitors devices, traffic, bandwidth, servers, applications, and hardware health. Its collection methods include SNMP, WMI, ICMP/Ping, NetFlow, sFlow, jFlow, IPFIX, syslog, and SNMP traps. Automatic discovery, dashboards, maps, alerts, and reports are included in the platform.

According to Paessler’s PRTG product information, the freeware edition supports up to 100 sensors for commercial or personal use. A trial provides unrestricted sensor use for 30 days before reverting to the freeware edition. A sensor is a monitored measurement, not a device: a switch may consume separate sensors for interfaces, CPU, memory, services, and other metrics.

Paessler says a device commonly requires approximately five to ten sensors in its PRTG FAQ. An illustrative environment of 20 devices using six sensors per device would require approximately 120 sensors, exceeding the freeware limit even though the environment contains only 20 devices.

Pricing supplied for August 16, 2026 lists PRTG 500 at $200 per month, PRTG 1,000 at $358 per month, PRTG 2,500 at $742 per month, PRTG 5,000 at $1,300 per month, and PRTG 10,000 at $1,642 per month when paid annually. The listed business prices exclude VAT; verify current pricing on Paessler’s pricing page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose PRTG when: you want transparent sensor-based licensing, broad protocol support, and a Windows self-hosted platform.
  • Do not choose PRTG when: you require a purely cloud-native service, lack Windows administration capability, or need deep distributed application tracing.

2. ManageEngine OpManager: best accessible infrastructure monitor

ManageEngine OpManager is best for organizations that want network-device and infrastructure monitoring with discovery, dashboards, alerting, and reporting. OpManager monitors physical and virtual infrastructure and offers Standard, Professional, and Enterprise editions.

The current free edition supports up to three devices for life, while a 30-day full-featured trial is available for larger evaluations, according to ManageEngine’s free OpManager page. The three-device limit is materially different from PRTG’s sensor limit: OpManager’s stated free limit is based on devices.

Paid pricing is generally quote-based. Higher editions or add-ons may be relevant for distributed monitoring, longer retention, role-based access, integrations, and advanced functions. Review the edition boundaries on OpManager’s editions page before comparing it with a per-device or per-sensor product.

  • Choose OpManager when: you want broad infrastructure visibility and a commercial platform with a relatively accessible entry point.
  • Do not choose OpManager when: you need packet capture, a completely open-source stack, or a purely SaaS-first workflow.

3. SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor and Observability Self-Hosted

SolarWinds is best for mid-sized and large organizations that need mature SNMP monitoring, path analysis, and modular network-operations features. SolarWinds products cover network monitoring, bandwidth analysis, configuration management, IP address management, switch-port management, VoIP monitoring, and troubleshooting. Network Performance Monitor includes NetPath network-path visualization and performance-analysis workflows.

SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted is positioned for on-premises and hybrid environments. The supplied pricing information lists Observability pricing starting at $8 per node per month, while the Network Performance Monitor product page shows a starting price of $2,829. Those figures refer to different products or packages and must not be treated as directly comparable.

Consult SolarWinds’ network-management page, SolarWinds Observability pricing, and SolarWinds pricing information for current packaging. Flow analysis, configuration management, log analysis, and IP address management may add cost and implementation work.

  • Choose SolarWinds when: you need mature enterprise modules, distributed operations, and detailed network-management workflows.
  • Do not choose SolarWinds when: a small team needs only basic uptime and latency alerts or cannot support a sales-led enterprise deployment.

4. Datadog Network Monitoring: best for cloud and application correlation

Datadog Network Monitoring is best for cloud-first and hybrid organizations that already need one observability platform for network, infrastructure, applications, and logs. Datadog provides Cloud Network Monitoring, Network Device Monitoring, and Network Path Monitoring. Network Device Monitoring covers switches, routers, firewalls, interface bandwidth, utilization, and hardware-health metrics.

According to Datadog’s pricing page, the supplied August 16, 2026 pricing signals list Cloud Network Monitoring from $5 per host per month and Network Device Monitoring from $7 per device per month when billed annually; on-demand prices are higher. Datadog pricing can also involve hosts, devices, traffic, metrics, logs, and retention, so a headline rate is not a complete estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Datadog is less attractive when the requirement is only traditional SNMP monitoring and the organization does not need application or cloud correlation. Review the product’s network capabilities at Datadog Network Monitoring.

  • Choose Datadog when: network symptoms must be correlated with cloud services, hosts, applications, logs, and user-facing behavior.
  • Do not choose Datadog when: you want a low-cost standalone network monitor or an on-premises platform without SaaS dependency.

5. PingPlotter: best for intermittent path and latency faults

PingPlotter is best for diagnosing intermittent latency, packet loss, routing problems, and ISP or WAN complaints. PingPlotter continuously charts latency and apparent packet loss at each hop, creating historical evidence for problems that disappear before a support engineer investigates.

PingPlotter helps separate a local-network issue from an ISP, transit, or destination-path issue, but intermediate-hop loss requires careful interpretation. Routers may deprioritize or rate-limit ICMP responses while continuing to forward ordinary traffic. Loss is more convincing when it continues through later hops and the final destination.

The vendor’s PingPlotter products page lists plans starting at $6.99 per month. PingPlotter is a path-analysis tool, not a replacement for inventory, SNMP fleet monitoring, configuration backup, or packet-level analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Wireshark: best packet analyzer

Wireshark is best for deep packet capture and protocol analysis when a monitoring alert has to be explained at packet level. Wireshark is free and open source and supports Windows, macOS, and Linux workflows. Engineers commonly use it to investigate DNS, TCP retransmissions, TLS negotiation, DHCP, ARP, authentication, VoIP, and application-protocol faults.

Useful display filters include:

dns
tcp.analysis.retransmission
tcp.analysis.duplicate_ack
icmp
arp
dhcp
tls
http
ip.addr == 192.0.2.10

Wireshark is not continuous availability monitoring. Captures may contain credentials, session tokens, personal data, internal hostnames, and business communications. Obtain approval, restrict access, encrypt stored captures, and define retention before collecting production traffic. Capture location also matters: a capture taken on a server, switch mirror port, firewall, or endpoint sees a different part of the conversation.

Use the Wireshark documentation and the Wireshark manual for capture and analysis details.

Example commands include:

nmap -sn 192.0.2.0/24
nmap -sV 192.0.2.10

Host discovery and service detection depend on scan type, privileges, firewalls, rate limits, and topology. Scanning can trigger intrusion-prevention systems, alarms, or account lockouts. Scan only systems you are authorized to test, document the scope, coordinate with security teams, and use appropriate rate limits. Nmap is not a historical latency, bandwidth, or availability-monitoring system. The Nmap reference guide explains its scan options.

8. Zabbix: best flexible open-source monitoring platform

Zabbix is best for technical teams that want an extensible open-source platform for networks, servers, applications, and cloud resources. Zabbix supports agent-based and agentless monitoring, including SNMP, discovery, templates, dashboards, alerting, automation, and historical data.

Zabbix can scale substantially when the architecture, polling, database, retention, and alert design are engineered correctly. The software may have no license fee, but administration, storage, backups, upgrades, security hardening, and support still cost money. Poorly tuned triggers can also create alert fatigue.

Review the current Zabbix manual and Zabbix support and pricing information. Choose Zabbix when the team can own the monitoring server and database; choose a managed service when immediate turnkey deployment matters more than control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. LibreNMS: best free SNMP-focused monitor

LibreNMS is best for smaller and medium-sized technical teams that want free, open-source, multi-vendor SNMP monitoring. LibreNMS provides autodiscovery, graphs, alerts, dashboards, and device-health visibility for routers, switches, firewalls, wireless equipment, and other supported devices.

LibreNMS is self-hosted and community-supported. Results depend on correct SNMP configuration, device support, polling design, alert tuning, and ongoing Linux and database maintenance. LibreNMS is less suited than Datadog or a full enterprise observability suite to unified application tracing and cloud-service correlation.

Consult the LibreNMS documentation and the LibreNMS project site before deployment. “Free” describes the software license, not the total operating cost.

10. iPerf3: best throughput-testing utility

iPerf3 is best for measuring achievable TCP or UDP throughput between two controlled endpoints. iPerf3 helps validate LAN, WAN, VPN, wireless, and data-center links and can distinguish a service-path problem from a local application or endpoint problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start an iPerf3 server:

iperf3 -s

Run a client test:

iperf3 -c SERVER_IP

Useful variations include reverse direction, parallel streams, and UDP:

iperf3 -c SERVER_IP -R
iperf3 -c SERVER_IP -P 4
iperf3 -c SERVER_IP -u -b 100M

iPerf3 measures a test path under test conditions; application performance may differ. UDP tests require careful interpretation of loss, jitter, and target rate. Both endpoints need suitable access, and active tests can consume production bandwidth. Begin conservatively and obtain authorization before testing a live WAN.

See the official iPerf3 documentation for supported options.

11. MTR: best repeated route and loss testing

MTR is best for combining repeated route tracing with ongoing latency and apparent packet-loss measurements. MTR is often more informative than a single traceroute when a fault is intermittent because it observes the path repeatedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Linux and macOS, a report-style command is:

mtr -rw example.com

Interpret MTR results using the final destination and subsequent hops. An intermediate router may rate-limit diagnostic responses without dropping the traffic that follows. MTR should therefore support, not replace, application tests and monitoring data. The MTR manual page documents its options.

Related command-line tool: tcpdump provides lightweight remote packet capture when Wireshark cannot be installed. For example:

sudo tcpdump -i any -nn port 53
sudo tcpdump -i any -nn host 192.0.2.10
sudo tcpdump -i any -nn -s 0 -w capture.pcap host 192.0.2.10
sudo tcpdump -i any -nn 'tcp port 443'

Use capture filters to reduce volume at collection time, and open saved .pcap files in Wireshark when deeper analysis is needed. The tcpdump manual describes the command syntax.

How do monitoring and troubleshooting differ?

Monitoring detects and records a condition over time, while troubleshooting gathers evidence to explain the condition. A monitoring platform can alert that a WAN interface is saturated, a server is unreachable, or DNS latency has increased. PingPlotter, MTR, Wireshark, tcpdump, Nmap, and iPerf3 can then test the path, inspect packets, enumerate services, or measure capacity.

  1. Alert: confirm that the alert is actionable and not a maintenance-window artifact.
  2. Scope: determine whether one user, VLAN, site, service, device, or many destinations are affected.
  3. DNS: test resolution with nslookup on Windows or dig on Linux and macOS.
  4. Reachability: test the endpoint with ping or an application-specific request.
  5. Path: use tracert, traceroute, PingPlotter, or MTR.
  6. Infrastructure: inspect interface errors, discards, utilization, CPU, memory, routing state, and device logs.
  7. Traffic: examine NetFlow, sFlow, IPFIX, or equivalent data for congestion and unexpected talkers.
  8. Packets: capture with Wireshark or tcpdump when protocol-level evidence is required.
  9. Capacity: use iPerf3 carefully to test throughput, loss, and jitter under controlled conditions.
  10. Confirmation: verify that remediation resolves the symptom and update the alert or baseline if necessary.

Which tool combinations work best?

Small organization

Use PRTG Freeware or a paid PRTG plan for continuous monitoring, PingPlotter for intermittent WAN complaints, Wireshark for packet-level faults, and iPerf3 for controlled throughput validation. A small organization should verify sensor consumption before assuming the freeware edition covers its device count.

Open-source environment

Use LibreNMS for focused multi-vendor SNMP monitoring or Zabbix for broader extensibility. Add Nmap for authorized discovery validation, MTR for recurring path tests, and tcpdump or Wireshark for packet evidence. Budget for the Linux, database, backup, upgrade, and alert-tuning work.

Hybrid-cloud organization

Use Datadog or another cloud-oriented observability platform when application and cloud correlation is central. Retain SNMP monitoring for traditional hardware, cloud-provider telemetry for VPC or VNet visibility, and MTR, PingPlotter, or synthetic path monitoring for Internet and WAN behavior.

Enterprise network operations team

Evaluate SolarWinds, OpManager Enterprise, PRTG Enterprise Monitor, Datadog, LogicMonitor, or ThousandEyes according to the required deployment model and scope. Include distributed collectors, high availability, flow monitoring, packet-capture capability, IT service-management integrations, role-based access, retention, and on-call escalation in the design.

If the primary question is… Start with… Add when needed
Is a device, service, or link available? PRTG, OpManager, SolarWinds, Zabbix, or LibreNMS PingPlotter or synthetic tests for user-facing paths
Where does intermittent latency or apparent loss begin? PingPlotter or MTR Interface metrics, flow data, and application tests
What exactly happened in the protocol exchange? Wireshark or tcpdump Monitoring history to identify the incident window
Which hosts and services are reachable? Nmap Asset inventory and configuration validation
How much throughput can the path deliver? iPerf3 Capacity trends and interface counters
How do cloud, network, infrastructure, and applications interact? Datadog or comparable observability platform Cloud-provider telemetry and specialized path monitoring
How can we avoid license fees? LibreNMS, Zabbix, Wireshark, Nmap, iPerf3, or MTR A staffing and hosting budget

What does “free” really mean?

Free products use different limits and obligations. A free-forever edition may impose a hard sensor or device cap; a trial may provide full features only temporarily; open-source software may have no license fee but require substantial engineering; and a free tier may become usage-priced after a threshold.

Model Example from this list What to budget for
Free edition with a hard limit PRTG up to 100 sensors; OpManager up to three devices Additional licenses when coverage grows
Time-limited trial PRTG’s 30-day unrestricted-sensor trial; OpManager’s 30-day full-featured trial Decision and migration work before the trial ends
Open-source software Wireshark, Nmap, Zabbix, LibreNMS, iPerf3 Hosting, storage, administration, security, backups, and support
SaaS usage pricing Datadog network monitoring Hosts, devices, traffic, metrics, logs, retention, and contract growth
Paid focused utility PingPlotter Subscription or plan cost, while still using another monitor for fleet visibility

Total cost of ownership includes licensing, hosting, database and capture storage, retention, support, implementation, integrations, alert-noise reduction, training, security review, and upgrade responsibility. A product with no license fee is not automatically cheaper than a managed service if the organization lacks the staff to operate it.

What should a purchase evaluation test?

  1. Collection: confirm SNMPv3, ICMP, agents, flow protocols, syslog, APIs, synthetic probes, and packet capture requirements.
  2. Coverage: test routers, switches, firewalls, servers, cloud networks, VPNs, wireless equipment, and representative applications.
  3. Alert quality: test thresholds, baselines, dependencies, suppression, maintenance windows, deduplication, escalation, and notification delivery.
  4. Scale: model devices, interfaces, sensors, polling intervals, sites, collectors, retention, and high-availability requirements.
  5. Security: verify SNMPv3, encryption, RBAC, SSO, audit logs, data residency, secrets handling, and least-privilege agents.
  6. Operations: measure installation, upgrades, backups, database maintenance, collector management, and troubleshooting effort.
  7. Commercials: normalize monthly versus annual billing, device versus node versus sensor pricing, add-ons, support, taxes, contract minimums, and trial limitations.

Important limitations and edge cases

Why can packet loss be misleading?

Intermediate routers may deprioritize ICMP replies while forwarding ordinary traffic normally. A loss percentage at one hop is not sufficient evidence of a network fault unless the loss continues to the destination or correlates with application symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is collector placement important?

A monitoring server or probe needs suitable reachability to management VLANs, branch networks, cloud networks, VPN endpoints, firewalls, and out-of-band systems. ACLs, routing, NAT, and firewall policy can make a tool appear incapable when the real issue is that the collector cannot reach the monitored target.

Why is traditional SNMP not enough for every cloud network?

Cloud environments may require visibility into VPC or VNet routes, security groups, transit gateways, Kubernetes networking, service meshes, cross-region paths, and cloud-provider APIs. A conventional polling platform may need to be supplemented with cloud-native telemetry or an observability and path-monitoring service.

Why does more monitoring sometimes make operations worse?

More metrics can create more noise without improving decisions. Establish baselines, monitor dependencies, alert only on conditions that require action, suppress downstream alerts during known upstream failures, assign ownership, and test notifications regularly.

What are the privacy risks of packet capture?

Packet captures can contain credentials, personal data, session tokens, internal hostnames, customer information, and business communications. Obtain legal and security approval, restrict access, encrypt captures, and define retention and deletion controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free network diagnostics tool?

The best free network diagnostics tool depends on the task. Wireshark is the strongest general packet analyzer, Nmap is useful for authorized discovery, iPerf3 measures throughput, MTR investigates repeated path behavior, LibreNMS provides SNMP-focused monitoring, and Zabbix offers broader open-source monitoring. No free tool performs all of those jobs equally well.

Is Wireshark a network-monitoring tool?

Wireshark is primarily a packet-capture and protocol-analysis tool, not a continuous network-monitoring platform. Wireshark explains packet behavior during an incident, while a platform such as PRTG, OpManager, SolarWinds, Zabbix, or LibreNMS records availability, health, trends, and alerts over time.

Is PRTG really free?

PRTG has a freeware edition supporting up to 100 sensors, and Paessler supplies a 30-day trial with unrestricted sensor use before the installation reverts to the freeware edition. The limit is sensors rather than devices, and a device commonly requires approximately five to ten sensors depending on the desired coverage.

What is the difference between sensors and devices in PRTG?

A device is a monitored asset such as a switch or server, while a sensor is an individual measurement or monitored service. One device can require multiple sensors for interfaces, CPU, memory, services, and other metrics, so 100 sensors does not mean 100 devices.

Is Nmap legal to use at work?

Nmap is appropriate for authorized discovery and security diagnostics, but scanning systems without permission can violate organizational policy or law. Define the scope, obtain authorization, coordinate with security teams, document the scan, and use rate limits where necessary.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: choose a continuous monitoring platform and pair it with focused diagnostic utilities. PRTG is a practical all-in-one self-hosted starting point; OpManager and SolarWinds suit broader commercial network operations; Datadog fits cloud and application correlation; LibreNMS and Zabbix reduce license fees when a technical team can operate them; and Wireshark, PingPlotter, Nmap, iPerf3, tcpdump, and MTR answer specialized incident questions.
