The best PC benchmark software for Windows depends on what you need to measure: 3DMark is the strongest choice for gaming and GPUs, PCMark 10 suits office PCs, Cinebench 2026 measures rendering, CrystalDiskMark tests storage, and OCCT checks stability. No single score accurately represents every computer or workload.
A benchmark is useful only when its workload matches the question you are asking. A gaming benchmark cannot replace an SSD test, a short CPU test cannot prove long-term cooling performance, and a stress test is not the same thing as a performance ranking.
Key takeaways
- 3DMark is the best overall choice for gaming performance, GPU upgrades, ray tracing, and graphics-focused testing.
- PCMark 10 models office and everyday workloads, but UL now positions Procyon as its successor for new customers.
- Cinebench 2026 is free and tests CPU and GPU rendering with Maxon’s Redshift engine, including Windows-on-Arm support.
- OCCT is the best choice for finding instability, overheating, memory errors, and problems caused by overclocks or undervolts.
- CrystalDiskMark measures SSD and hard-drive speed; it is not a complete PC benchmark.

Which 3DMark test should you run?
- Steel Nomad: A demanding, non-ray-traced DirectX 12 graphics workload for Windows.
- Speed Way: A DirectX 12 Ultimate ray-tracing benchmark.
- Time Spy: A DirectX 12 gaming benchmark using a 2560×1440 workload.
- Port Royal: A dedicated real-time ray-tracing test.
- Fire Strike: A DirectX 11 gaming benchmark.
- CPU Profile: Measures performance at 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and maximum threads.
- Storage Benchmark: A separate paid DLC test based on gaming storage activity.
3DMark requires 64-bit Windows 10 at minimum; UL recommends Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 21H2. Speed Way requires Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 21H2, DirectX 12 Ultimate, and at least 6 GB of graphics memory. Windows-on-Arm compatibility is limited to selected tests, so x64 compatibility should not be assumed for every 3DMark workload.
Free or paid: Some tests or editions may be available at no cost, but the complete suite, Advanced Edition features, Storage Benchmark DLC, professional licensing, automation, offline results, and XML export are paid or edition-dependent.
Verdict: Choose 3DMark when the question is “How capable is this gaming GPU?” Do not use it as your only test for office responsiveness, SSD speed, or system stability.

2. PCMark 10: best for office and everyday performance
PCMark 10 is the strongest choice for measuring a complete Windows PC in office, web, communication, and general productivity workloads. PCMark 10 covers Essentials, Productivity, and Digital Content Creation, including web browsing, video conferencing, application startup, spreadsheets, writing, photo editing, video editing, rendering, and visualization.
The official PCMark 10 documentation also lists gaming, battery-life, and storage tests. Its Applications benchmark runs practical tests in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Edge; that profile requires Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Office 2013 or later, and UL states that PCMark 10 is compatible with Windows 11 and Microsoft Office 2021.
PCMark 10 battery profiles cover Modern Office, Applications, Video, Gaming, and Idle scenarios. Storage profiles include Full System Drive, Quick System Drive, Data Drive, and Drive Performance Consistency tests. These workloads are more informative for a work laptop than a standalone CPU score, although laptop battery results depend heavily on brightness, power mode, software, and hardware configuration.
PCMark 10 is not the newest direction for UL’s productivity testing. UL describes PCMark 10 as the latest version of the older PCMark series but identifies Procyon as its successor and encourages new customers to choose Procyon. The PCMark 10 page lists version 2.3.2912, dated February 3, 2026.
Recommended Free Tools
Free or paid: Availability depends on the edition and test. Professional features include automation, PDF/XML export, offline results, and Testdriver remote automation.
Verdict: Use PCMark 10 for office-PC comparisons and battery testing, but mention Procyon when recommending a forward-looking professional solution.
3. Cinebench 2026: best for CPU and GPU rendering
Cinebench 2026 is the best free choice for comparing CPU and GPU rendering performance on creator and workstation PCs. Cinebench 2026 uses Maxon’s Redshift rendering engine and renders a consistent scene to evaluate CPU and GPU capabilities.
Maxon states that Cinebench 2026 is free and supports Intel and AMD x86-64 systems on Windows as well as Arm64 CPUs on Windows. Cinebench reports separate CPU and GPU results, which is more useful than forcing different types of rendering performance into one misleading overall score.
Run the CPU test when comparing processors for rendering, encoding-related workloads, or other heavily threaded creator tasks. Run the GPU test when the application or renderer can use the graphics processor. Repeat or loop the test when cooling is part of the question: a short result can show burst performance without revealing sustained thermal throttling.
Limitation: A Cinebench score does not predict gaming performance, SSD speed, office responsiveness, or general system reliability. GPU results also depend on supported hardware, driver behavior, and rendering features.
Verdict: Choose Cinebench 2026 when your real question involves CPU or GPU rendering rather than general PC speed.
4. Geekbench 7: best for quick cross-platform comparisons
Geekbench 7 is the most convenient choice for a fast CPU or GPU Compute comparison across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. The software includes CPU and GPU Compute benchmarks and can upload results to the Geekbench Browser.
The Geekbench editions page lists CPU benchmarking, GPU Compute, and online results management in the free edition. Geekbench 7 Pro adds automation, standalone mode, and online/offline result management, and the page listed Pro at $99 per user when checked for this article.
Primate Labs announced Geekbench 7 on July 23, 2026, describing new and improved CPU and GPU workloads and media workloads involving AV1, Opus, and Whisper-related processing in the Geekbench 7 announcement.

Geekbench is especially useful when comparing different operating systems or processor architectures. Short runs can emphasize burst behavior, however, so Geekbench should not replace a long rendering loop, gaming benchmark, or stability test when sustained performance matters.
Verdict: Use Geekbench 7 for speed and cross-platform convenience; use a workload-specific benchmark for purchasing or thermal decisions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. PassMark PerformanceTest: best broad component suite
PassMark PerformanceTest is the best all-rounder for users who want CPU, graphics, memory, and storage tests in one Windows application. Its suites cover CPU, 2D graphics, 3D graphics, memory, and disk performance, with separate sub-scores that help reveal which component is responsible for a weak overall result.
PassMark’s official PerformanceTest page describes online comparisons against a large baseline database and tools for measuring the effect of hardware or configuration changes. The standard tests are available for free, while advanced tests require a paid license. PassMark’s edition comparison lists a $39 Windows x86/ARM license signal and a free trial when checked for this dossier.
PerformanceTest is useful before and after a RAM upgrade, GPU replacement, storage migration, or system reconfiguration. Compare the individual component scores rather than relying only on the aggregate score: a fast GPU can conceal weak storage, memory, or CPU performance in a composite result.
Limitation: Results are only comparable when the benchmark version, test selection, settings, and hardware configuration match. A broad score is not a substitute for a game benchmark, rendering test, or stability test.

Verdict: Pick PerformanceTest when you want one broad diagnostic snapshot instead of several highly specialized applications.
6. OCCT: best for stability and fault finding
OCCT is the best choice for testing whether a CPU, GPU, memory subsystem, VRAM, power delivery system, or cooling setup remains stable under sustained load. OCCT describes itself as an all-in-one stability, stress-test, benchmark, and monitoring tool.
OCCT’s official feature list includes CPU, GPU, memory, VRAM, and power-supply tests, as well as per-core CPU testing, varying GPU loads, CPU and memory benchmarks, online comparison, and a memory latency-and-bandwidth test.
OCCT is particularly useful after building a PC or changing an overclock, undervolt, memory profile, cooling system, or power supply. Run CPU, GPU, and memory tests separately when diagnosing a failure; a combined power test can reproduce a crash but may not identify which component caused it.

Safety: Watch temperatures, clock speeds, power, and error counters. Stop the test if temperatures become unsafe or the computer behaves abnormally. Return unstable overclocks and undervolts to stock settings. A successful short OCCT run is evidence of stability under that particular workload and duration, not proof of indefinite reliability.
Verdict: Choose OCCT when the question is “Is my PC stable?” rather than simply “How fast is my PC?”
7. CrystalDiskMark: best for SSD and hard-drive speed
CrystalDiskMark is the best simple Windows tool for measuring sequential and random read/write performance on SSDs, NVMe drives, hard disks, USB drives, and external storage. CrystalDiskMark offers Peak, Real World, and Demo modes and separates sequential performance from random and mixed read/write behavior.
The official CrystalDiskMark requirements and download page lists support from Windows XP through Windows 11, Windows Server editions through 2025, and x86, x64, and ARM64 architectures. The same page listed CrystalDiskMark 9.0.3, released May 24, 2026, when checked for this article.
CrystalDiskMark results depend on test size, queue depth, data pattern, drive temperature, free capacity, and background activity. The vendor warns that some SSDs behave differently depending on whether the test uses random or zero-fill data. Do not compare a CrystalDiskMark sequential result directly with a PCMark Storage result: the two tools measure different workloads.
Repeated write testing can add unnecessary wear, especially on SSDs. Do not interrupt a storage benchmark casually, and avoid running large write tests when important data is not backed up.

AIDA64 Extreme is best understood as a paid diagnostic suite with benchmarking features, not as a single general-purpose score generator. AIDA64 combines hardware and software inventory, sensor monitoring, system diagnostics, memory tests, cache benchmarks, and other enthusiast-oriented tools.
The AIDA64 Extreme product page is most useful when a reader needs to inspect exactly which hardware, firmware, memory configuration, and sensors are present while testing system behavior. That makes AIDA64 valuable for memory tuning, compatibility investigations, and troubleshooting configuration problems.
AIDA64 is more complex than beginner-focused tools, and its results are less directly comparable unless the exact test, version, settings, and system state are recorded. Current edition names, trial length, pricing, and Windows support should be verified directly before publication or purchase because those commercial details can change.
Verdict: Choose AIDA64 Extreme when detailed diagnostics and memory/cache testing matter more than a simple public ranking.
9. Blender Benchmark: best for Blender rendering
Blender Benchmark is the best benchmark for users whose real work takes place in Blender. An application-specific benchmark can be more useful than a generic score when it reproduces the software, rendering engine, and type of scene used in production.
Blender Benchmark helps compare CPU and GPU rendering hardware for 3D artists, animators, and rendering professionals. Results should be recorded with the Blender version, benchmark scene, rendering engine, device, and driver because those variables affect comparability.
Start with the Blender Open Data benchmark portal or the official Blender benchmark download page. Current download instructions, supported Windows hardware, distribution details, and licensing should be checked before publication because the benchmark ecosystem can change.
Limitation: Blender Benchmark says little about office work, gaming, storage, or general system responsiveness. Its value comes from matching a Blender workflow.
Verdict: Use Blender Benchmark instead of a generic PC score when Blender rendering is the workload that determines whether an upgrade is worthwhile.
10. NovaBench: best for a simple beginner snapshot
NovaBench is a reasonable beginner-friendly option for a quick general PC snapshot, provided its current Windows support, version, pricing, and result database are checked first. NovaBench is simpler and faster than a professional or enthusiast suite, making it approachable for a basic before-and-after comparison.
A simple aggregate score can hide an individual bottleneck, so NovaBench should not outrank specialist tools when the reader needs accurate gaming, rendering, storage, or stability information. Do not describe NovaBench as the most accurate benchmark without current independent evidence.
Use the official NovaBench site for the current download and result information. Verify the present free and paid tiers, supported architectures, active online database, and current Windows version before publishing or recommending a specific edition.
Verdict: NovaBench is suitable for beginners who want a quick orientation, but PassMark is the better-documented broad-suite choice for more serious diagnosis.
What does PC benchmark software measure?
PC benchmark software runs a defined workload and produces a score or set of measurements that can be compared with other runs using the same test conditions. Different benchmark categories answer different questions:
- Synthetic benchmarks use repeatable, designed workloads to produce comparable scores.
- Application benchmarks model real programs or tasks, such as Microsoft Office, Cinema 4D, or Blender.
- Gaming benchmarks render graphics workloads intended to approximate game performance.
- Component benchmarks isolate storage, memory, CPU, or GPU behavior.
- Stress tests sustain a heavy load to expose instability, overheating, throttling, or hardware errors.
- Monitoring tools record temperatures, clocks, power, fan speed, and throttling but may not produce a meaningful performance score.
The distinction matters. HWiNFO, for example, is an excellent companion for observing a benchmark, but it is not one of the ten primary performance benchmark suites in this list.
How should you prepare a Windows PC for benchmarking?
- Download the benchmark from the official vendor site or a trusted official store.
- Update Windows, chipset drivers, graphics drivers, and relevant firmware when appropriate.
- Reboot before testing.
- Close games, browsers, launchers, cloud-sync tools, update utilities, and other heavy background applications.
- Connect a laptop to AC power unless battery-life testing is the specific goal.
- Select the intended Windows power mode and record it.
- Allow the system to reach a normal idle temperature before starting.
- Record the CPU, GPU, RAM capacity and speed, storage drive, Windows version, graphics-driver version, resolution, BIOS settings, and power limits.
- Run the same test at least twice.
- Investigate large score differences instead of averaging them away.
- Monitor temperature, clock speed, power, fan speed, and throttling during long tests.
- Do not interrupt a storage benchmark or stress test casually; storage tests may write substantial data and stress tests create sustained heat and power demand.
For monitoring, HWiNFO’s current Windows download page lists installer and portable packages for x86, x64, and ARM64. The page lists stable HWiNFO version 8.50 for the portable package and states that HWiNFO 64/ARM64 freeware is limited to non-commercial use.

How should you interpret a benchmark score?
A higher score is generally better, but a score is comparable only within the same benchmark, version, preset, resolution, and test mode. A Cinebench result cannot be directly compared with a 3DMark result because the workloads measure different kinds of performance.
- A benchmark result is not a guarantee of game frame rate, application responsiveness, battery life, or system reliability.
- Short tests can reward burst performance; long tests reveal sustained performance and thermal throttling.
- Laptop results depend on AC or battery operation, cooling, fan profile, ambient temperature, and power limits.
- Background processes, driver updates, BIOS settings, memory profiles, and Windows power plans can materially change results.
- Online rankings can identify unusual results, but they do not automatically prove that a system is healthy or defective.
- A low score shows that something differs from the comparison group; it does not necessarily identify the cause.
For a meaningful comparison, save the result, record the conditions, and compare like-for-like runs. A two-percent difference may be normal run-to-run variation, while a large unexplained change deserves investigation rather than a conclusion based on one score.

What should you do when benchmark results look wrong?
Scores vary substantially between runs
Large variation can result from thermal throttling, laptop battery mode, background applications, Windows updates, antivirus scans, dynamic boost behavior, inadequate cooling, different presets or resolutions, graphics-driver changes, or BIOS and memory-profile changes. Reboot, document the conditions, repeat the test, and compare only identical settings.
A new PC scores below online averages
Do not immediately conclude that hardware is defective. Check the exact CPU and GPU model, power limit, RAM capacity and channel configuration, memory speed, Resizable BAR or equivalent platform settings, GPU driver, BIOS settings, temperatures, clock behavior, and whether the online comparison includes overclocked systems. Also verify that the benchmark version and preset match.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Storage results are lower than expected
Check the PCIe generation and motherboard slot, NVMe driver and firmware, drive temperature, free capacity, background writes, power-management state, test size, data pattern, and whether the drive is connected through a slower adapter or enclosure. A CrystalDiskMark result can be lower than a manufacturer’s sequential specification without indicating a failed drive if the conditions differ.
A stress test crashes the PC
A crash is evidence of instability under that workload, not automatic proof that a particular component has failed. Return overclocks and undervolts to stock, check temperatures, test the CPU, GPU, memory, and power behavior separately, update firmware and drivers, and inspect cooling and power delivery.
A laptop scores much lower on battery
That can be expected because many laptops reduce power limits and clock speeds away from the charger. Run and report separate plugged-in and battery results instead of presenting one mode as the universal laptop score.
Windows-on-Arm support is unclear
Do not generalize x64 support to ARM64 support. 3DMark limits Windows-on-Arm compatibility to selected tests, Cinebench 2026 states that it supports Arm64 CPUs on Windows, and CrystalDiskMark lists x86, x64, and ARM64 support. Check each product’s current requirements rather than assuming every test is native or fully supported.
Recommended Free Tools
Benchmarking versus stress testing versus monitoring
Benchmarking measures performance; stress testing searches for instability; monitoring explains what the hardware did during either activity. 3DMark, PCMark 10, Cinebench, Geekbench, PassMark, CrystalDiskMark, and Blender Benchmark are primarily performance tools, although some include limited stress or monitoring features. OCCT is primarily a stability and fault-finding tool. HWiNFO records temperatures, clocks, power, fan speed, and throttling while another program runs.
Use the category that matches the decision. A high 3DMark score does not prove stable memory, a successful CrystalDiskMark run does not prove a healthy operating system, and a HWiNFO sensor log does not itself establish how fast the PC completed a workload.
Other tools worth considering
- MemTest86: A strong choice for dedicated bootable memory-error testing, rather than a conventional Windows benchmark.
- FurMark: Useful for extreme GPU stress testing, but its unusually demanding workload is less representative of normal gaming than 3DMark.
- Heaven and Valley: Still usable for legacy GPU comparisons, but older graphics workloads should not outrank current 3DMark tests for modern systems.
- UserBenchmark: Can provide a quick comparison, but its aggregate rankings should not be treated as a neutral replacement for workload-specific testing without discussing its methodology and weighting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free PC benchmark software for Windows?
The best free Windows benchmark depends on the component: Cinebench 2026 is the strongest free choice for CPU and GPU rendering, CrystalDiskMark is best for SSD speed, and OCCT’s free edition is highly useful for many stability tests. Geekbench also provides free CPU and GPU Compute testing, while broad-suite features in other products may be edition-limited.
What is the best benchmark for gaming PCs?
3DMark is the best benchmark for gaming PCs because it provides DirectX 11, DirectX 12, ray-tracing, CPU, feature, and gaming-oriented stress tests. Actual game benchmarks remain the best final check for a particular title, resolution, and graphics setting.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How many times should I run a PC benchmark?
Run the same benchmark at least twice under the same conditions and investigate large differences instead of averaging them away. Repeat or loop the test for sustained-performance questions because short runs can miss thermal throttling.
Can benchmark software damage a PC?
Normal benchmark software should not damage a correctly functioning PC, but stress tests can create very high temperatures, power draw, and instability. Monitor temperatures and power, stop abnormal tests, and return unstable overclocks or undervolts to stock settings.
Should I benchmark a laptop on battery power?
Benchmark a laptop on battery only when battery-mode performance or battery life is the question. For comparable performance results, connect the laptop to AC power, record the power mode, and report plugged-in and battery results separately.
The Bottom Line
Choose the benchmark that matches the decision: 3DMark for gaming, PCMark 10 for office work, Cinebench 2026 for rendering, CrystalDiskMark for storage, PassMark for a broad snapshot, and OCCT for stability. Use HWiNFO beside any of them when temperatures, clocks, power, or throttling may explain the result. The most useful benchmark is not the one with the biggest score; it is the one whose workload resembles your real use.
