The 10 Best Free Audio Converter Tools (Online & Offline) are CloudConvert, Convertio, FreeConvert, Zamzar, fre:ac, Audacity, FFmpeg, MediaHuman Audio Converter, Switch, and VLC. Choose a browser service for an occasional non-sensitive file, fre:ac or MediaHuman for local batches, Audacity for editing, and FFmpeg for automation; none can restore lossy audio quality.
The list includes both true converters and tools that are useful at adjacent stages, such as CD ripping, audio extraction, editing, and scripted transcoding. Those differences matter: the fastest browser converter is not automatically the best choice for a private recording or a large music collection.
Key takeaways
- CloudConvert’s free plan documents 10 conversion credits per day, a 1 GB maximum file size, up to five concurrent tasks, and a five-minute maximum processing time.
- Zamzar supports more than 1,100 formats, but its current free workflow warns of a 50 MB limit and stores free converted files for a maximum of 24 hours.
- fre:ac is the strongest local choice for music libraries and CD ripping because it supports batch conversion, folder preservation, metadata, and CDDB/GNUdb lookup.
- Audacity is the best choice when trimming, normalization, effects, recording, or other editing must happen before export; FFmpeg is better for scripts and automation.
- Converting MP3 to WAV, or MP3 to another lossy format, cannot restore audio information discarded during the original MP3 encoding.
What is the best free audio converter for your situation?
CloudConvert, Convertio, or FreeConvert are the easiest choices for a quick browser conversion. Choose fre:ac or MediaHuman Audio Converter for private batch work, Audacity when editing is part of the job, FFmpeg for repeatable automation, and VLC only when VLC is already installed and the conversion is occasional.

What does an audio converter actually do?
An audio converter takes an existing audio file and changes its codec, container, or both. For example, a converter can encode WAV as FLAC, export audio as MP3, or place compatible audio data in a different container.
#1 Best Overall
- 【PLUG & PLAY – EASY CONNECTION】 Simply connect the Amicool External DVD Drive to your computer’s USB or Type-C port, and it will usually be detected right away without the need for extra drivers. For stable operation and sufficient power, we recommend connecting it directly to a USB port on your computer (for desktops, use a rear motherboard port) and avoiding USB hubs or extension cables. This user-friendly design ensures quick setup for both beginners and professionals.
- 【FAST & STABLE DATA TRANSMISSION】 Featuring dual interfaces (USB 3.0 and Type-C), this optical drive supports data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. To ensure a reliable connection, please connect it directly to your computer. The drive supports multiple disc formats such as DVD+R, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW. Please note: It does NOT support DVD-RAM, Blu-ray (BD) discs, or certain proprietary formats. Maximum DVD read speed is 8x, and maximum CD read/write speed is 24x.
- 【UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY】 Compatible with Windows 11 / 10 / 8.1 / 7, Linux, and all macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon) for MacBook Air/Pro, iMac, Mac mini; NOT for iPad/iPhone/Apple TV/ChromeOS; for Mac, insert disc FIRST, connect directly to USB port (use a POWERED USB‑C hub for M1/M2/M3 to avoid insufficient power), and open media with VLC Player (Apple DVD Player not supported). Works with most computers from brands like Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and Samsung. 👉 Important: Designed specifically for computers. It is NOT compatible with TVs, tablets, game consoles (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox), car stereos, or standalone Blu-ray players.
- 【SLIM & PORTABLE DESIGN – BUILT-IN CABLE, READY TO GO】With an integrated cable design, slim body, and stylish matte finish, this lightweight CD/DVD drive is both durable and portable. Easily slip it into your laptop bag or backpack and use it anytime, anywhere—perfect for business, travel, or home use
- 【MULTIFUNCTIONAL & RELIABLE OPERATION】 Equipped with intelligent error correction and anti-shock technology, this drive supports reading, writing, and burning discs. If the drive is not recognized or a disc cannot be read, try restarting your computer or testing with a different, standard CD-R or DVD-R disc. The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.
Conversion is not the same as editing, ripping, extraction, or digitization:
- Conversion or transcoding: changes how an existing digital audio file is encoded or packaged.
- Editing: changes the content by trimming, normalizing, applying effects, recording, or removing vocals.
- CD ripping: reads tracks from an audio CD and creates digital files.
- Audio extraction: separates an audio stream from a video or other media file.
- Analog digitization: captures cassette, vinyl, or another analog source through suitable input hardware before software conversion begins.
The distinction matters because a simple browser converter cannot clean up a recording, repair clipping, or recover information that was already removed by a lossy codec. Audacity is the most suitable tool on this list when editing must happen before conversion; fre:ac is the clearest fit for CD ripping; and a USB audio capture adapter is relevant only when the source is analog rather than an existing audio file.
Which online audio converter should you use?
Online converters are fastest for an occasional, non-sensitive file because they require no installation. The trade-off is that the source file must leave the computer, and free limits, retention windows, supported formats, and account requirements can change.
| Service | Documented capability or limit | Input sources | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| CloudConvert | 10 free conversion credits per day, 1 GB maximum file size, five concurrent tasks, and five minutes maximum processing time on the documented free plan | Browser upload | Compact, occasional jobs |
| Convertio | Free tier has separate file-conversion limits; check the current help page before processing a large file | Computer, Google Drive, Dropbox, or URL | Cross-device convenience |
| FreeConvert | More than 1,500 listed file conversions and a 1 GB maximum file size on its online converter page | Device storage, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or URL | Larger uploads and advanced options |
| Zamzar | More than 1,100 supported formats; free workflow currently warns of a 50 MB limit, with paid downloading required for larger files | Local storage, URL, Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive | Broad format coverage |
1. CloudConvert — best for a quick browser conversion
CloudConvert’s official audio converter page lists common formats including MP3, M4A, WAV, WMA, FLAC, OGG, Opus, AIFF, and AAC. The browser workflow is straightforward: upload a file, select an output format, convert it, and download the result.
CloudConvert is the best compact recommendation for a one-off conversion when installing software would be unnecessary. According to CloudConvert’s pricing page, the free plan documents 10 conversion credits per day, a maximum file size of 1 GB, up to five concurrent tasks, and a maximum processing time of five minutes.
The convenience comes with a privacy trade-off. CloudConvert processes the file through an online service, so private interviews, unreleased recordings, legal material, and large archives are better handled by an offline application. The free limits also make CloudConvert less attractive for recurring library conversions.
2. Convertio — best for simple cross-device use
Convertio’s official audio converter page supports popular formats such as MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG, M4A, AIFF, WMA, and Opus. Convertio accepts files from a computer, Google Drive, Dropbox, or a URL, and the service says the workflow works in modern browsers on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.

Convertio’s free tier has separate file-conversion limits rather than one simple universal allowance, so check the current Convertio free-tier documentation before uploading a large file.
Convertio says input files are deleted after processing and output files are deleted after 24 hours. That retention statement is useful, but an online deletion policy is not the same as keeping a confidential recording on a local computer.

Supported formats include CD-ROM/R/RW, DVD-ROM/R±RW/R±DL, and VCD. IMPORTANT: Not compatible with ChromeOS, smartphones, tablets, TVs, projectors, vehicles, or Blu-ray/4K discs. Please verify your device type before purchasing
3. FreeConvert — best for larger browser uploads
FreeConvert’s official converter page advertises more than 1,500 file conversions, a 1 GB maximum file size, advanced options, and input from device storage, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or a URL.
FreeConvert is a good browser choice when a minimal upload-and-download page does not provide enough control. The service says transfers use 256-bit SSL encryption and files are automatically deleted after a few hours. FreeConvert remains an online workflow, however, so the stated encryption and deletion window should not be treated as equivalent to local-only processing for highly confidential files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Zamzar — best for broad format coverage
Zamzar’s official service page supports more than 1,100 formats and accepts files from local storage, URLs, Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive. Format breadth makes Zamzar useful when a less common source or destination format is the main problem.
Zamzar’s current page warns that the free workflow has a 50 MB limit and that larger files require a paid account for downloading. Zamzar states that free converted files are stored for a maximum of 24 hours and can be deleted sooner by the user; the Zamzar FAQ provides the service’s current policy details.
Zamzar is therefore a strong format-coverage option, not the best choice for a large music library, repeated batch work, or recordings that should never be uploaded.
Which offline audio converter is best?
Offline tools are the better default for private files, recurring work, and large collections because conversion can take place on the local computer. Local processing is a workflow distinction, not a guarantee that every installation, operating-system setting, or surrounding application has identical privacy properties.
Recommended Free Tools
5. fre:ac — best dedicated offline converter and CD ripper
fre:ac is free and open source, and works on Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. The application converts among MP3, M4A/AAC, FLAC, WMA, Opus, Ogg Vorbis, Speex, APE, WavPack, WAV, and other formats.
fre:ac is the best overall local recommendation for a music collection. Its official feature list includes whole-library conversion while retaining folder and filename structure, plus an integrated CD ripper that can query the CDDB/GNUdb database and write metadata such as ID3 tags. Those features make fre:ac more suitable than a basic web converter for organizing and converting many albums.

CD-ripping accessory note: A computer without a usable optical drive may need an external USB CD/DVD drive to read an audio CD. The drive supplies access to the disc; it does not convert files by itself, and the accessory is unnecessary when the computer already has a working optical drive.
6. Audacity — best when editing comes before conversion
Audacity is a free, open-source desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Audacity can import, export, and convert common formats including MP3, M4A, AIFF, FLAC, and WAV.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Audacity is the right choice when the audio needs trimming, normalization, effects, vocal removal, recording, or another content change before export. Audacity is not the fastest dedicated batch converter, but it combines editing and export in one local application.
Audacity’s export documentation lists MP3, WAV, OGG, Opus, M4A/AAC, FLAC, and WavPack options. Some formats may require FFmpeg, so consult Audacity’s saving and exporting documentation and its FFmpeg installation documentation when the required format is not available in the default installation.
7. FFmpeg — best for advanced users and automation
FFmpeg’s official documentation describes command-line tools and components for codecs, encoders and decoders, muxers and demuxers, filters, resampling, and related media operations. FFmpeg is the most flexible option for scripted, repeatable, server-side, or highly customized conversion.
FFmpeg is a toolkit rather than a beginner-oriented converter window. The correct command depends on the source codec, target codec, desired quality or bitrate, sample rate, channel layout, metadata needs, and whether the operation is a re-encode or a container change. A command copied without understanding those choices can produce a technically valid file that is unnecessarily large or lower quality than intended.
FFmpeg is particularly valuable when the same conversion must run across many files or as part of a larger workflow. Beginners who need a graphical interface should start with fre:ac or MediaHuman instead.
8. MediaHuman Audio Converter — best GUI batch converter
MediaHuman Audio Converter is a free application for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Its official feature list includes batch conversion, MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG, FLAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV support, CUE-sheet splitting, folder-structure retention, metadata-based filenames, Music/iTunes integration, and audio extraction from video.
MediaHuman is the strongest graphical alternative to FFmpeg for users with many files who do not want to work at a command line. The application is built around adding files or folders and applying a consistent output choice, making it more appropriate for recurring batch work than Audacity or VLC.

9. Switch Audio Converter — best for a conventional desktop workflow
NCH describes Switch Audio Converter as free for personal, non-commercial home use and says it converts between more than 40 formats. The workflow supports dragging files and folders into the application, batch conversion, normalization, and playback before conversion.
Switch is a familiar choice for users who want a conventional Windows or macOS desktop interface. Its documentation lists common input and output formats, but Ogg, AAC, M4A, and FLAC output are Plus-only according to the Switch product documentation.
Switch should not be described as unrestricted freeware. NCH says the free version does not expire for common formats, while advanced features become restricted after a 14-day trial; the Switch licensing explanation also specifies the personal, non-commercial limitation.
10. VLC Media Player — useful when VLC is already installed
VLC is primarily a media player, but VLC can also convert media through Media > Convert/Save. VideoLAN’s documentation shows an Audio-MP3 profile in that workflow; see the VideoLAN conversion documentation.
VLC is convenient for an occasional conversion or for extracting audio from media that VLC already plays. VLC is not the best tool for a large music library, detailed codec management, or a carefully repeatable batch pipeline because dedicated converters and FFmpeg expose more conversion-specific controls.
How should you choose an audio converter?
Choose the tool according to the source, privacy requirement, and amount of work rather than assuming that one converter is universally best.
| Situation | Recommended tool | Reason | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| One ordinary file and no installation | CloudConvert | Compact browser workflow with common audio formats | Free plan documents daily, size, concurrency, and processing limits |
| File stored in Drive, Dropbox, or a URL | Convertio | Accepts those input locations and works across modern device browsers | Confirm the current free-tier file limits |
| Larger browser upload | FreeConvert | Advertises a 1 GB maximum and advanced options | Files still leave the local computer |
| Unusual format | Zamzar | Lists more than 1,100 supported formats | Free workflow currently warns of a 50 MB limit |
| Private interview or unreleased recording | fre:ac, MediaHuman, Audacity, FFmpeg, or VLC | Conversion can be performed locally | Choose fre:ac or MediaHuman for batch work and Audacity for editing |
| Large music library | fre:ac or MediaHuman | Both document batch or library-oriented workflows | Use FFmpeg when the process must be scripted |
| Audio CD to digital files | fre:ac | Includes CD ripping, database lookup, and tagging | A working optical drive is required |
| Trim, normalize, record, or apply effects | Audacity | Editing and export are in the same application | Some export formats may require FFmpeg |
| Repeatable server or command-line job | FFmpeg | Supports scripting and detailed media controls | Codec and quality settings must be chosen deliberately |
| Occasional conversion from media already playable in VLC | VLC | Conversion is available without installing a dedicated converter | VLC is primarily a media player, not a library converter |
Does converting audio improve sound quality?
Converting audio does not improve the quality of the source, and converting a lossy file such as MP3 into another lossy format cannot restore information that the first encoding discarded.

Suitable for multiple scenarios including home entertainment, office file processing, campus study and outdoor business travel.
Keep a lossless source such as WAV or FLAC whenever possible. Exporting that source to MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus, or another lossy codec can reduce file size, but the new file may contain encoding artifacts. Converting an MP3 to WAV only creates a larger WAV file containing the already-lossy audio; it does not recreate the original recording.
Lossless-to-lossless conversion is the safest route when the goal is to preserve the available audio data. Lossy output is reasonable when smaller files are more important, but select it from the original lossless source instead of repeatedly converting an already-compressed copy.
Sample-rate and channel choices also matter. FFmpeg’s official libswresample documentation, dated July 27, 2026 in the supplied source, explains that sample-rate conversion and sample-format conversion are handled by the resampling component and that reducing the sample rate is lossy; channel rematrixing can also be lossy. Do not upsample a low-rate file expecting detail to return.
| Source | Output | What happens | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAV or FLAC | FLAC or WAV | Lossless source remains lossless when the conversion path is lossless | Use for archiving or quality-sensitive work |
| WAV or FLAC | MP3, AAC, OGG, or Opus | Smaller lossy file may introduce encoding artifacts | Use when file size or device compatibility matters |
| MP3 or another lossy file | Another lossy codec | Previously discarded information remains missing and another encode may add artifacts | Avoid when the original lossless source is available |
| MP3 or another lossy file | WAV or FLAC | The container or encoding becomes lossless, but the missing source information is not restored | Use only when a workflow requires the destination format |
| Any source | Lower sample rate or changed channel layout | Resampling or channel rematrixing can be lossy | Keep the source rate and channel layout unless the target requires a change |
Are online audio converters private?
Online audio converters are convenient, but uploading a file creates a privacy and retention decision. Use a local tool for private interviews, unreleased music, legal recordings, client material, or a large archive. For ordinary, non-sensitive files, a browser converter may be appropriate after checking its current limits and deletion policy.
CloudConvert, Convertio, FreeConvert, and Zamzar each publish service-specific processing or deletion information, but those statements do not eliminate every concern associated with uploading a file. A local application such as fre:ac, MediaHuman, Audacity, FFmpeg, or VLC avoids the upload step during conversion.
What should you check before downloading the converted file?
- Keep the original: conversion is not a substitute for a backup, particularly when the source is already lossy.
- Confirm the extension and codec: a filename extension alone does not tell you every encoding setting inside the file.
- Play the output from beginning to end: check for missing audio, clipping, unexpected silence, or a wrong channel layout.
- Check metadata: tags and artwork may not survive every conversion path, although fre:ac and MediaHuman provide specific metadata-oriented features.
- Check the free limit first: online limits, supported formats, retention windows, and account requirements are volatile and should be verified on the service’s current page.
If your source is analog: software conversion begins only after the cassette, vinyl, or other analog source has been digitized. A USB audio capture adapter or USB audio interface may be needed for that capture step; the hardware is not an audio file converter and should not be treated as one.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use CloudConvert, Convertio, or FreeConvert for a quick non-sensitive browser job; choose fre:ac for CD ripping and music-library batches; choose MediaHuman for a GUI batch workflow; use Audacity for editing and FFmpeg for automation. Preserve WAV or FLAC when possible, and never expect a converter to restore lossy audio quality.
