The 10 best data recovery apps for Android are not equally capable: check Google Photos or Files by Google Trash first, use DiskDigger for a free photo or SD-card attempt, and consider paid desktop tools only after confirming device support and previewing recoverable data. Permanently deleted, overwritten, encrypted, or factory-reset data may be impossible to restore.
Android recovery depends mainly on where the data was stored, whether a backup still exists, and whether new data has overwritten the old storage blocks. A cloud Trash restore is fundamentally different from searching an SD card or attempting to reconstruct an app database from encrypted internal storage.
Key takeaways
- Google Photos keeps backed-up deleted photos and videos in Trash for 60 days and unbacked-up items deleted from Android 11 or later for 30 days.
- Files by Google keeps items in its Trash for 30 days, but files removed through the Junk files cleanup card are permanently deleted instead of being moved to Trash.
- DiskDigger is the strongest genuine free on-device option for a basic photo-recovery attempt, especially on a removable SD card, but unrooted scans are limited.
- Paid tools such as EaseUS MobiSaver, Dr.Fone, UltData, D-Back, FoneLab, and FonePaw are situational utilities, not guarantees of recovery from encrypted or overwritten storage.
- Root can provide broader access, but unlocking a bootloader may wipe the phone and rooting after deletion can reduce recovery chances.
What are the 10 best data recovery apps for Android?
The best choice depends on the recovery scenario rather than the product’s position in a generic ranking. Google Photos and Files by Google are the safest first choices because they restore items from their own Trash systems; DiskDigger is the best low-cost local attempt; and desktop utilities are more appropriate when the target is an SD card, a supported phone database, or several categories of personal data.
| Tool | Best for | Platform | Root or special access | Free option | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Photos | Deleted backed-up photos and videos | Android app and cloud service | None | Yes | Only items still in Trash or available in the library can be restored |
| Files by Google | Files deleted through Files by Google | Android app | None | Yes | Trash lasts 30 days; Junk files cleanup can permanently delete items |
| DiskDigger | Photos and removable SD cards | Android app | Limited without root; deeper scans benefit from root | Basic photo recovery | Unrooted scans may find thumbnails rather than original files |
| EaseUS MobiSaver for Android | Computer-assisted recovery and SD cards | Desktop utility | Varies by device, Android version, and scan type | Usually scan or preview dependent | Current compatibility and export limits require verification |
| Wondershare Dr.Fone | Several data categories in a guided workflow | Desktop utility | Varies by workflow | Typically trial or preview based | Vendor recovery claims need careful qualification |
| Tenorshare UltData | Vendor-claimed no-root, Google Drive, and WhatsApp workflows | Desktop utility and related tools | Marketed as no-root for some workflows | Trial or preview dependent | “Without root” does not mean unrestricted internal-storage recovery |
| iMyFone D-Back | Supported databases, backups, and cloud-oriented recovery | Desktop utility | Varies by method | Trial or preview dependent | Recovery depends on an intact database and data not being overwritten |
| FoneLab Android Data Recovery | Contacts, messages, media, call logs, WhatsApp, and documents | Desktop utility | Varies by device and data type | Trial or preview dependent | Its claimed device coverage is not proof of successful recovery |
| FonePaw Android Data Recovery | A commercial comparison alternative | Desktop utility | Must be checked for the particular device | Must be checked | Current support, update status, and pricing need verification |
| Undeleter Recover Files & Data | Advanced or rooted local recovery | Android app | Root may be required for advertised capabilities | Must be checked | Current compatibility and availability need verification |
What should you do immediately after deleting Android data?
Stop using the affected storage before installing recovery software. New photos, videos, downloads, app updates, caches, and recovery-app files can overwrite storage blocks that still contain remnants of the deleted data.

- Do not factory-reset the phone or unlock its bootloader.
- If the file was on a removable SD card, eject the card and stop writing to it.
- Check Google Photos, Files by Google, the manufacturer’s Gallery recycle bin, cloud drives, and app-specific backups.
- Save recovered files to a computer, cloud account, separate SD card, or external drive—not the storage being scanned.
1. Google Photos: the best first stop for deleted photos
Google Photos is the best recovery method when the missing item was backed up or is still in Google Photos Trash. Google Photos provides a native restore rather than attempting to carve fragments from phone storage.
Open Google Photos → Collections → Trash, select the photo or video, and tap Restore. Google’s restore instructions for Android document this path and explain that restored items return to the Google Photos library, albums, and the phone’s gallery when applicable.
According to Google Photos support, backed-up deleted items generally remain in Trash for 60 days, while items deleted from Android 11 or later without backup generally remain for 30 days. Permanently deleted items cannot be restored through Google Photos.
Best for: photos and videos removed recently from Google Photos or covered by Google Photos backup.
Not for: arbitrary documents, SMS databases, contacts, or files permanently deleted from Google Photos Trash.
2. Files by Google: the safest option for files deleted in its app
Files by Google is the correct first recovery tool when the file was deleted through Files by Google and remains in that app’s Trash.
Open Files by Google → Menu → Trash, select the file, and tap Restore. Google’s Files by Google help page states that items remain in Trash for 30 days.

Best for: downloaded files, documents, and other items deleted from the Files by Google interface.
Not for: files deleted by another file manager after the relevant recycle bin was emptied.
3. DiskDigger: the best free on-device recovery attempt
DiskDigger is the strongest genuine Android recovery-app candidate for a low-cost attempt, particularly when the target is a photo or a removable SD card. DiskDigger runs on the phone and can search internal or external storage, but Android permissions and root status determine how much storage it can inspect.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Video recovery and broader file recovery generally require root, and unrooted devices receive a more limited scan. The Pro version supports additional file types and cloud or FTP export according to the product documentation.
On an unrooted phone, DiskDigger may find thumbnail remnants or cached copies instead of the original full-resolution photo. A recovered image may have a generic filename, missing album information, a lower resolution, or corruption. Finding a preview does not prove that the original file is recoverable.
Best for: recently deleted photos, quick on-device searches, and removable SD cards.
Not for: guaranteed recovery of encrypted internal storage, app databases, or permanently overwritten files.

4. EaseUS MobiSaver for Android: a desktop alternative for common data types
EaseUS MobiSaver for Android is a computer-assisted option for readers who want a desktop interface, file filtering, and a workflow that may include phone storage or an SD card.
The EaseUS MobiSaver manual lists common manufacturers including Samsung, HTC, Google, LG, Sony, and Motorola. Compatibility should still be checked against the current program, phone model, Android version, root status, and requested file type because older reviews can describe obsolete interfaces or support.
Use the trial or preview stage to determine whether the program detects the phone and displays the actual missing files. A scan that completes successfully is not the same as an export that produces usable files. Verify whether the current license covers Windows, Mac, one device, multiple devices, or a particular recovery module before paying.
Best for: users who want a recognized desktop workflow or SD-card recovery process.

Main caution: do not assume a broad manufacturer list means that a deleted file on a modern encrypted phone can be recovered.
5. Wondershare Dr.Fone: a broad commercial suite
Wondershare Dr.Fone – Data Recovery (Android) is a commercial utility aimed at users recovering several categories, including photos, videos, contacts, messages, call logs, documents, and some app-related data.
Dr.Fone may be useful when a supported phone is detected and a guided computer workflow is preferable to a manual investigation. The recovery method matters: a product may restore a backup, read an accessible database, or search limited storage rather than recover permanently deleted internal files.
Treat recovery-rate figures and “no root” language as vendor marketing unless an independent, reproducible test supports the claim. Before purchasing through the official Wondershare Dr.Fone domain, check current Android-version support, the exact data category, trial export limits, privacy terms, and whether a subscription renews automatically.

Best for: a supported phone with multiple types of personal data and a need for a guided desktop suite.
Not for: a simple Google Photos or Files by Google Trash restore, where the native service is safer and free.
6. Tenorshare UltData for Android: a commercial no-root-focused option
Tenorshare UltData for Android is marketed as a commercial option for recovery without root and for workflows involving Google Drive, WhatsApp, and newer Android versions.
Tenorshare’s official UltData product page advertises no-root recovery, Google Drive downloads, WhatsApp recovery, and support claims that include Android 16. Those are vendor-documented claims, not independent proof that every deleted file can be recovered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“Without root” should be read narrowly. A no-root workflow may use an accessible backup, logical data, a readable database, or limited permissions; it does not provide unrestricted access to deleted data inside encrypted internal storage.
The official purchase page indicates that monthly or annual plans may auto-renew by default. Check the checkout wording, regional price, refund terms, and cancellation process before buying.
Best for: users whose case specifically involves a supported Google Drive or WhatsApp backup, or who want to test a vendor-claimed no-root workflow.

7. iMyFone D-Back for Android: useful when a database or backup survives
iMyFone D-Back for Android is most relevant when the phone, database, or cloud backup remains accessible and supported by the current product build.
According to the vendor’s D-Back Android FAQ, recovery depends on the relevant database file still existing and being complete, and deleted data may be recoverable only if it has not been overwritten. That limitation is technically important: D-Back is not a way to recreate data for which no database, backup, or unoverwritten storage remains.
The vendor’s broader D-Back product information claims support for many manufacturers and Android versions through Android 16. Confirm the exact phone model and current build before purchase rather than relying on a general compatibility statement.
Best for: supported devices, intact databases, and backup- or cloud-oriented recovery.
Poor fit: a factory-reset phone, an emptied cloud Trash, or data overwritten after deletion.
8. FoneLab Android Data Recovery: broad personal-data coverage
FoneLab Android Data Recovery is a paid desktop alternative that lists contacts, messages, photos, videos, audio, call logs, WhatsApp, and documents among its supported categories.
FoneLab’s official Android Data Recovery page claims compatibility with more than 6,000 Android phones and tablets and displayed a $44.76 lifetime price during the research pass. The price is a dated vendor-page observation, not a permanent price; promotions, currencies, and regional checkout terms can change.
The claimed device count indicates the vendor’s stated compatibility breadth, not a measured recovery success rate. Test detection and preview first, and confirm whether the current version needs USB debugging, root, a particular backup, or a specific Android edition.
Best for: users comparing a lifetime-license-style desktop option across several common data categories.

9. FonePaw Android Data Recovery: verify before treating it as a recommendation
FonePaw Android Data Recovery is a possible commercial alternative, but current compatibility, maintenance, pricing, supported data categories, root requirements, trial limits, and refund terms should be verified before publication or purchase.
FonePaw should not be ranked above tools with clearer current documentation merely because it appears in older “best Android recovery” lists. Check whether the official build supports the phone’s manufacturer and Android version, whether the phone can be detected without unlocking its bootloader, and whether the trial can preview the specific missing files.
Best for: a user who has confirmed current device support and wants another desktop comparison.
Do not buy when: the product cannot identify the device before payment or the recovery claim is based only on an old review.
10. Undeleter Recover Files & Data: an advanced rooted-user candidate
Undeleter Recover Files & Data is aimed at technically confident users, especially those with rooted phones or removable storage, but its current Android compatibility and availability must be checked before relying on it.

How do you choose the right Android recovery tool?
Choose by storage location and data type first. A photo in Google Photos Trash needs a cloud restore; a deleted JPG on a portable SD card may be suitable for file carving; an SMS database needs a backup-aware tool; and a locked or physically damaged phone may need a specialist.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What data is missing? | Photos, documents, contacts, SMS, call logs, WhatsApp, and app data use different recovery methods. |
| Where was it stored? | Google Photos, Google Drive, an app backup, internal storage, portable SD storage, and adopted storage have different access and encryption conditions. |
| Is the tool an Android app or desktop program? | Many products called Android apps actually require Windows or Mac and a USB connection. |
| Is root required? | Root may enable deeper access, but the rooting process can wipe data and create security or boot problems. |
| Can the tool preview the actual files? | A preview helps avoid paying for a scan that finds only thumbnails, fragments, or unrelated files. |
| Where can recovered files be exported? | Exporting to another disk or cloud destination reduces the risk of overwriting the affected storage. |
| What does the license include? | Check whether the license is monthly, annual, lifetime, per device, Windows-only, Mac-only, or subject to auto-renewal. |
| What happens to private data? | Review permissions, upload behavior, privacy policies, and data-retention terms before scanning sensitive files. |
How do you recover deleted Android files safely?
Start with native Trash and backups
Check Google Photos, Files by Google, the manufacturer Gallery recycle bin, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, email attachments, and the app’s own backup system before installing recovery software. Native restore is less invasive and normally preserves original names, folders, albums, and metadata better than file carving.
Recover a Google Photos item
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap Collections, then Trash.
- Select the item and tap Restore.
- If Trash is empty, check the correct Google account and other backup locations, but do not assume a third-party undelete app can restore a permanently deleted cloud item.
Recover a Files by Google item
- Open Files by Google.
- Open the menu and choose Trash.
- Select the file and tap Restore.
- Remember that Junk files cleanup can permanently delete items without placing them in Trash.
Try DiskDigger for a photo or SD card
- Stop writing to the phone or card.
- Install only the recovery tool you have selected.
- Run the least invasive available scan.
- Review results carefully, distinguishing thumbnails from original files.
- Export recovered files to a computer, cloud account, or separate storage.
Use a desktop utility cautiously
- Use a data-capable USB cable and unlock the phone.
- Enable USB debugging only if the software requires it and you understand the authorization prompt.
- Use the trial or preview mode to confirm that the program detects the correct device and finds useful files.
- Check the exact license, renewal, refund, and export terms.
- Pay only if the preview justifies the cost, and save results somewhere other than the affected storage.
Can Android recovery apps recover permanently deleted files?
Android recovery apps can sometimes find remnants, but no Android app can reliably recover every permanently deleted file. Recovery may succeed when a directory entry was removed but the contents remain, when thumbnails or caches survive, or when a removable SD card has unoverwritten blocks.
Recovery becomes unlikely or impossible when new data has overwritten the old blocks, a cloud service has permanently deleted the item, encryption keys are unavailable, a secure erase or factory reset has occurred, or storage garbage collection has discarded the relevant blocks.
Modern Android internal storage is substantially harder to recover than a portable SD card because Android uses encryption and scoped-storage restrictions. Android’s compatibility documentation describes file-based encryption and the difficulty of recovering protected user data without the required credentials or keys.
| Situation | Likely result | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Item remains in an app’s Trash | Usually the best recovery chance | Use the app’s native Restore command |
| Deleted file on a portable SD card | Potentially recoverable if not overwritten | Eject the card and scan it separately or with a computer |
| Deleted file in modern internal storage | Restricted and device-dependent | Avoid further writes and test a supported tool carefully |
| Thumbnail remains but original is gone | Partial, low-resolution recovery | Save the thumbnail only if it is useful; do not mistake it for the original |
| Factory reset or lost encryption keys | Often impossible for ordinary software | Seek professional assessment for high-value data |
| Data overwritten | Generally unrecoverable | Restore from a backup if one exists |
Does rooting improve Android data recovery?
Root can give a recovery app broader access to internal storage, and DiskDigger says rooted devices are more likely to produce deeper results. Root may be required for video, documents, app databases, or full internal-memory scans in some tools.
Root does not recreate deleted data or defeat encryption by itself. Unlocking the bootloader may wipe the device, rooting can write to the same storage after deletion, and a failed procedure can leave the phone unbootable. Root can also affect security-sensitive banking and DRM-protected apps.
Recommendation: do not root a phone containing valuable deleted data unless you understand the exact device-specific risks and have professional guidance. A risky rooting attempt can be worse than using a limited unrooted scan.
What is the difference between an Android recovery app and a desktop utility?
An Android recovery app runs on the affected phone and is convenient for photos, thumbnails, caches, and some SD-card searches. A desktop utility runs on Windows or Mac, usually connects by USB, and may provide better filtering, separate-disk export, SD-card imaging, or backup/database workflows.
| Approach | Advantages | Disadvantages | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Trash or cloud restore | Free, safe, preserves original organization | Only works within the retention and backup system | Recently deleted photos, videos, and files |
| On-device recovery app | No computer required; convenient for photos and SD cards | Installing and running the app can overwrite data; Android permissions limit access | Low-cost photo attempt or removable storage |
| Windows or Mac utility | Better interface, filtering, separate export, and possible database support | Often paid; results depend on model, Android version, USB access, and root | Supported phones, SD cards, and multiple data categories |
| Professional recovery service | Appropriate for physical damage or irreplaceable data | Potentially expensive and not guaranteed | Broken, locked, reset, or high-value devices |
How does recovery differ by file type?
Photos and videos
Photos and videos are the most realistic targets for Trash restore, backup restore, thumbnail recovery, or file carving. Google Photos should come first, followed by the manufacturer Gallery recycle bin, then DiskDigger or a supported SD-card workflow.
Documents and downloads
Check Files by Google Trash, the original download service, cloud drives, email attachments, and computer backups first. Generic on-device scans may find document fragments, but internal-storage encryption and overwritten blocks limit results.
Contacts, SMS, and call logs
Contacts, SMS, and call logs are database-oriented data, so a photo-recovery app is not automatically suitable. Check Google or manufacturer backups first, then use a desktop tool only if the vendor explicitly supports the exact data type and device.

WhatsApp data should be approached through WhatsApp’s own backup and restore process or a tool with explicit WhatsApp support. Check the backup date before reinstalling WhatsApp; reinstalling or creating a new backup can complicate the recovery decision.
Broken or locked phones
A broken, water-damaged, locked, or inaccessible phone may require repair or a professional recovery laboratory rather than an ordinary Android app. A screen-unlock or FRP-bypass product is not automatically a data-recovery tool.
Portable and adopted SD cards
A portable SD card can generally be removed and scanned separately, making it a better conventional recovery target than modern internal storage. Adopted or internalized SD storage is encrypted and tied to the phone, so recovery can be substantially harder. Do not format the card or accept an operating-system “repair” prompt before making an image or backup when the data matters.

What should you do when a recovery tool fails?
The tool finds meaningless filenames or thousands of files
The result may be file carving rather than intact filesystem recovery. Generic names, duplicates, missing folders, wrong extensions, broken images, and absent timestamps are common signs that the tool found fragments or cached copies.
The tool finds thumbnails instead of originals
A thumbnail is a smaller cached preview and may be the only surviving copy. An image that looks recognizable but has low resolution or missing metadata should not be treated as recovery of the original full-resolution file.
The computer does not detect the phone
- Unlock the phone.
- Try a data-capable USB cable and another USB port.
- Select File Transfer or MTP if Android displays a USB prompt.
- Enable USB debugging only when required by the software, then accept the computer authorization prompt.
- Install current manufacturer USB drivers if necessary.
- Try another computer, but do not unlock the bootloader just to make a recovery program detect the device.
The app containing the data was deleted
Reinstalling an app can restore data only when a compatible backup exists and the app supports its restore process. Inspect backup dates before reinstalling, and avoid creating a new backup that could replace the older one.
The phone was factory-reset
A factory reset on a modern encrypted Android phone may make ordinary recovery impossible. Do not pay for a guaranteed-recovery promise; seek a reputable specialist for irreplaceable data.

Turn on Google Photos backup for important photos, keep Android or Google backups current, use WhatsApp’s own backup settings, and maintain a second copy of irreplaceable files on a computer, external drive, or separate cloud service. A single phone or SD card should not be the only copy of valuable data.
Review backup dates periodically rather than assuming that a backup exists. Cloud backup also has retention, account, storage, and deletion rules, so a backup is protection only while the correct account and intact backup remain available.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free Android data recovery app?
DiskDigger is the best free genuine on-device recovery attempt for many photo cases and removable SD cards, although its unrooted scan is limited. Google Photos Trash and Files by Google Trash should be checked first because native restore is safer and free when the item is still retained.
Can I recover permanently deleted photos from Android without root?
Sometimes, but success is limited and depends on whether a backup, thumbnail, cache, or unoverwritten storage block remains. Without root, Android apps generally cannot perform a deep unrestricted scan of modern encrypted internal storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould I root my Android phone to recover deleted files?
Usually not as a first step. Root may provide broader access, but bootloader unlocking can wipe the phone, rooting can write over deleted data, and a failed procedure can make the phone unbootable.
Is an Android recovery app useful after a factory reset?
A normal Android recovery app cannot guarantee recovery after a factory reset, and modern encryption may make the original data inaccessible. High-value cases should receive a professional assessment before further use of the phone.
How much does Android data recovery software cost?
Pricing varies by vendor, region, platform, device count, and license type. Many desktop tools offer a free scan or preview but charge for export, while plans may be monthly, annual, or lifetime; verify the current checkout and auto-renewal terms before payment.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: check Google Photos, Files by Google, manufacturer recycle bins, and backups before installing anything. Use DiskDigger for a cautious free photo or portable-SD-card attempt. Use a paid desktop utility only when the software detects the right device and previews useful files.
